Shorkies

Shorkies are mixed-breed dogs with two main parent breeds: Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier. Considered a “designer dog” because they are a deliberate mix and not an accidental mix, Shorkies emerged from the same world as other more common mixes like the Cavachon and the mini Aussiedoodle. Diminutive in size but big in personality, the Shorkie is a lesser-known but still much-beloved mix. Social, affectionate, and deeply loyal to their humans, Shorkies are lovely little dogs that can also give their owners a run for their money.

Mixing two dog breeds doesn’t always yield predictable—or expected—results. Some Shorkies will inherit more traits from their Shih Tzu parent, while others will be more similar to their Yorkshire Terrier side. Some Shorkies might be the perfect mix of Shih Tzu and Yorkie, while others might display few or almost none of the traits of their parent breeds.

This TikTok user was expecting one thing but got quite the other!

“I found with [my Shorkie] that she has a lot of Yorkie Tendencies, more than Shih Tzu,” says a Reddit comment from a Shorkie owner describing his dog’s personality. “She was very high-energy [as a puppy] and still has a lot of energy a year later…very loving but she has a temper as well. She loves people but not other critters. That might just be mine—she has a strong personality.”

Put simply, every Shorkie is an individual, but learning from the experiences of other Shorkie owners, browsing breed guides like this one, and meeting Shorkies in real life can give you a general idea of what life with one of these pups would look like.

Meet 5 Shorkie Dogs

We can’t continue without looking at some Shorkie pictures so you can have a better picture of the dogs we’re discussing. Each of these pups is a mix of Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier and one is on the hunt for a family to call his own. If you’re searching for an adoptable Shorkie, he might be the one!

Shorkie Basic Info

Shorkies are mixed-breed dogs with no official breed standards—this means it can be a little hard to nail down their specific traits like temperament, health, and size. Luckily, there are plenty of people who have owned this mix to share their experiences with us, and some educated guesses to be made based on what we know about the Shorkie’s parent breeds.

From how to structure training sessions and what kinds of households Shorkies do best in to full-grown Shorkie size and health details, here’s what you need to know about owning a Shorkie.

Shorkie Temperament

Shorkies are social and loyal little dogs who bond closely with their family members and prefer being with them over almost all else. Some Shorkies are so attached to their humans that they become prone to separation anxiety, so they aren’t a good choice for people who need to be away from their dogs most of the day. Shorkies that take after their Yorkshire Terrier parents may have higher energy than those that take after their Shih Tzu parents, but most Shorkies enjoy light exercise, going for walks, and playing.

“[My Shorkies] are both lovely little dogs, 8 and 8 years old now, and just sleep most of the day. Easy going, low maintenance. Mine don’t need much exercise and are just happy to be on the couch with us,” says a Reddit commenter who owns two Shorkies. “I’ve also had a full Shih Tzu and there’s not much difference, they are just smaller and coats are easier to maintain. They are both barkers but the standard Shih Tzu was too.”

Brave and sometimes territorial, Shorkies can be wary of strangers at first and may act a bit like tiny guard dogs. Shorkies may bark to alert and can be vocal to get their points across, and may not enjoy living in apartments or shared spaces with lots of activity. Sometimes stubborn and strong-willed, Shorkies are intelligent and thankfully easy to train with the right combination of positive reinforcement consistency.

Shorkies can be amazing family dogs, but because of their small size and assertive personalities, they are not recommended for families with small children. Early socialization and consistently working on training your Shorkie can make them more adaptable and comfortable in all situations, but keep in mind that these small dogs may be quick to react if they are fearful or not being respected.

Shorkie Size

Shorkies are small dogs that stand 7–11 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 7–16 pounds.

Shorkie Health

Shorkies can inherit genetic health issues from either parent breed but may have a higher rate of health problems than their purebred parents as a consequence of unregulated cross-breeding. Some health problems to consider and keep an eye out for if you own a Shorkie include:

  • Joint problems (e.g. patellar luxation)
  • Dental issues
  • Eye and vision problems (e.g. cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy)
  • Ear infections
  • Allergies
  • Breathing issues (e.g. brachycephalic syndrome)
  • Cushing’s disease

Where To Find Shorkie Dogs For Sale

Shorkies breeders are unregulated and typically operate as backyard breeders and puppy mills in the United States. Because of this, it’s best to avoid buying Shorkie puppies from “breeders” and opt for adoption instead. Mixed-breed dogs are endlessly available at shelters and animal rescues, and it’s quite easy to find a mix you’re interested in. Shih Tzu mixes are particularly common thanks to the popularity of the breed, and you can also search breed-specific rescues if your heart is set on a mix of a certain breed.

Shorkie Dogs FAQ

Don’t end your quest for Shorkie knowledge here—there’s a lot more to know about this designer dog. Just look at what others are asking about the Shorkie mix.

How long do Shorkies live?

The average Shorkie lifespan—as determined by looking at the lifespan of the two parent breeds—is 10–18 years.

Are Shorkies recognized by any kennel clubs?

Shorkies are not purebred dogs and are not recognized by any official kennel clubs like the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club. Newer, less broadly recognized organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club recognize designer breeds and mixes like the Shorkie but do not list any breed details or standards.

Do Shorkies shed a lot?

No, Shorkies are low to moderate-shedding dogs. Both Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzus are low-shedding breeds with mid-length to long coats.

How often do Shorkie dogs need to be groomed?

Shorkies should be groomed every 4–8 weeks to manage coat length, prevent matting, and maintain your chosen Shorkie haircut styles. You can learn to groom your Shorkie at home, but having your dog professionally groomed is often safer and yields better results. Whether or not you get your Shorkie professionally groomed, you should perform regular coat maintenance at home. Daily brushing and regular baths can help keep your Shorkie haircuts looking good between fully grooms.

Remember that Shorkie coats need to be groomed for their entire lives—this is an expense you must be prepared for before you choose this or any other breed with similar grooming needs. Neglecting to groom your Shorkie doesn’t just look bad, it can lead to health issues, discomfort, and pain for your pup.

Groomers often also offer basic dental care which can help keep your Shorkie from developing dental disease, which is common in this small breed.

What is a teacup Shorkie?

A teacup Shorkie is a Shih Tzu and teacup Yorkshire Terrier mix. “Teacup” Yorkshire Terriers are Yorkies that have been deliberately bred to be even smaller than the breed standard but are not an official size. While very cute, “teacup” dogs often suffer from genetic and congenital health issues not associated with their standard-sized counterparts.

What is a Shorkie Poo?

A Shorkie Poo is a mix of Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, and Poodle. This can be achieved by crossing a Shorkie with a purebred Poodle, crossing a Yorkipoo with a purebred Shih Tzu, or crossing a Shih-Poo with a Yorkshire Terrier.

The comments section of Max’s birthday post was flooded with love and well-wishes. Marisella said, “Happy Birthday Max, thank you for inviting us. Hope you enjoyed your day. P.S. Cousin Chilindrina and Popis loved the Birthday 🎂 Great choice on the cake.”

Is Max’s party making you want to host a quinceañera for your dog’s 15th birthday too? Then, read on to explore how you can do that.

What is a Dog Quinceañera?

The Quinceañera festival is a significant cultural celebration in Latin American communities, including Mexico, Argentina, and Ecuador. This joyous occasion marks a girl’s transition from childhood to womanhood on her 15th birthday.

Inspired by the Latin American tradition of Quinceañera, a Dog Quinceañera celebrates a dog’s 15th birthday. But you can celebrate a Quinceañera for dogs even at 2-4 years because it’s equivalent to 15 human years and it’s not common for dogs to live up to 15 years.

This celebration honors your dog’s growth into a mature, smart, and responsible companion. Mark this special moment with a festive party, bringing people together to cherish your dog’s newfound adulthood.

How To Host a Dog Quinceañera?

  1. Choose A Dog Quinceañera Dress
Source: The Dog Bakery

A Quinceañera celebration for dogs is incomplete without adorable costumes. Traditionally, the birthday girl wears a stunning gown. For a canine Quinceañera, you can find adorable dog Quinceañera dresses in various colors. These Quince dresses for dogs ensure your pup looks stylish and festive for the occasion.

Tiara is a perfect addition to a Quinceañera dress for a dog, as it makes your dog look like the princess she is. Your pup will surely stand out on her special day. You can explore various online stores or websites to find the perfect Quinceañera dresses for dogs and accessories for your furry friend’s unforgettable celebration.

  1. Invite Guests

Once you’ve planned the perfect Quinceañera celebration for your furry friend, it’s time to invite the guests, who should be dog-friendly. When inviting human guests, create invitations that match the theme and colors of the party, and include essential details such as date, time, location, and dress code. Send out invitations 2-3 weeks in advance to give guests ample time to RSVP.

Don’t forget to invite your pet’s doggy pals to join in the celebration! Ensure the guest list includes only well-behaved and vaccinated dogs. Provide a safe and comfortable environment for all canine guests, and consider a “pup-friendly” venue or a securely fenced outdoor area.

  1. The Cake

The cake-cutting ceremony is a pivotal moment in any Quinceañera celebration, and it’s no exception for a canine Quinceañera. To make this moment even more unforgettable, you can order a customized dog-friendly cake from The Dog Bakery or make your cake using ingredients like peanut butter, pumpkin, and carrots.

  1. Activities

A Quinceañera celebration for your furry friend is not complete without fun and engaging activities. One exciting activity is a Doggy Fashion Show. Dress up your pup and their doggy friends in adorable outfits and have them strut their stuff on a mini catwalk.

Another fun activity is a Pup Playdate. Set up a secure and comfortable play area where dogs can socialize and play with each other. You can also provide doggy games and toys to keep them entertained.

Ultimately, a Dog Quinceañera isn’t just about the party—it’s about celebrating the bond you share with your dog and the happiness they bring to your life. It’s a day to cherish their love, loyalty, and unique personality while creating moments to treasure forever.

Neglected By Previous Owners, This Senior Yorkie is Ready to Love Again https://rockykanaka.com/neglected-left-to-die-by-previous-owners-this-senior-yorkie-is-ready-to-love-again/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 15:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=75333 Reaching old age is a blessing for our canine friends, given their rather short lifespans. Dogs in their senior years want nothing more than to feel loved and cared for, and this is exactly what 14-year-old Mickey, a Yorkie mix, desired from his previous owners. (watch video below)

Neglected & Left to Die By Previous Owners, This Senior Yorkie is Ready to Love Again

Except, they didn’t care about his well-being and, in fact, they wanted nothing to do with him.

Left to spend all his days and nights in the backyard of his home without food, water, or proper shelter, Mickey was a few steps away from the end. Each day presented a fresh survival challenge for this sweet senior, and he’d often be spotted wandering the neighborhood in a severely neglected state.

AMA Animal Rescue — a Brooklyn-based rescue that saved Mickey — said that whenever concerned neighbors questioned Mickey’s owners about the ongoing neglect, they’d neither deny nor express remorse, heartlessly stating that Mickey was “too old” and that they were “just waiting for him to die.”

The Turning Point

The prolonged neglect took a toll on Mickey’s physical health. His fur became heavily matted, and he developed serious dental issues. Watching the humans he trusted the most treat him like garbage also did a number on his emotional well-being, as he became quite terrified of people.

Once AMA Animal Rescue was alerted to Mickey’s suffering, their first course of action was to convince his owners to surrender him. Eventually, the owners agreed to surrender Mickey, giving the rescuers an opportunity to start him on life-saving treatment.

Journey to Healing

Mickey needed urgent medical care, including a major surgery. His rescuers tirelessly fundraised for his treatment, and thankfully, Mickey received the medical aid he needed. Because of his deep-seated fear of people, Mickey found it hard to immediately trust his rescuers.

Over time, though, the rescue team’s everyday kindness assured him that he was in a safe, loving environment, prompting him to lower his guard around them. They’ve gotten to see his jovial side, and even though Mickey is still wary of new faces and other dogs, he has so much potential to blossom into a fully confident dog.

@eric.and.joey Meet Mickey, the senior pup in need of a second chance. Mickey is quite the resilient pup, as he was neglected and left alone in his previous owner’s care, oftentimes without any food or water. He was found with pounds of matted hair, terrified of humans, and in need of urgent medical care. Slowly but surely, Mickey has warmed up and shown AMA Animal Rescue his creative side. Mickey would thrive in a home without small children, with someone patient who can give him the time to trust and let his guard down, as he has never known love and care before. Located in Brooklyn, New York, Mickey is 14 years and 6 months old. He weighs about 16 lbs and is a Yorkie mix. Mickey’s Searching for a Forever Home

Despite all the suffering he endured with his previous owners, Mickey is ready to love again. He just wants to be part of a family that will treasure him throughout his golden years, and he’s willing to open his heart fully to the right person.

Neglected & Left to Die By Previous Owners, This Senior Yorkie is Ready to Love Again

“The reason you adopt a senior dog isn’t for you, it’s for them,” said Rocky Kanaka, pet rescue advocate. “The unconditional love that they give to you, you give back to them. They’ll leave this world knowing what it was like to be part of a family.”

Mickey’s ideal forever home is preferably one without kids for the sake of his peace of mind. He’d appreciate a family that’s patient with him, knowing that he’s on the path toward becoming a confident, trustful pup (which can’t happen overnight).

Mickey wants someone who won’t tire of reassuring him; someone who’ll help him work through his fears with gentleness and patience. If you’d like to give Mickey the best seniorhood experiences he could ever ask for, please visit AMA Animal Rescue for details on his adoption process.

The Ultimate Fluff Overload: Nine Parti Yorkies on Instagram You Need To Follow Now! https://rockykanaka.com/parti-yorkies/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 01:12:24 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=50511 Parti Yorkies—pronounced “party Yorkies”—are purebred Yorkshire Terriers with unique coloration caused by a recessive gene. Traditional Yorkies come in four two-toned color combinations, but Parti Yorkies are tri-colored with patches of white fur. Although Parti Yorkies don’t meet breed standards, they are still 100% Yorkshire Terriers, and can even be registered with the American Kennel Club. The only thing Parti-colored Yorkies can’t do is enter official breed dog shows.

Parti Yorkies

So, if you’re an everyday dog owner looking for a uniquely colored, small-sized canine companion, the Parti Yorkie might be your perfect pup!

Traditional Yorkie Coat Colors vs. Parti Yorkies: What’s the Difference?

To fully appreciate how special Parti Yorkies are, you need to see some traditionally colored Yorkies, first. All traditional color Yorkies are born black and tan, but their markings can fade and shift as they age, and eventually fall into one of four standard and kennel club-accepted colors:

  • Blue and Gold
  • Blue and Tan
  • Black and Gold
  • Black and Tan

Papuru (left) is a blue and gold Yorkshire Terrier, and Kiki (right) is a blue and tan Yorkie. “Blue” refers to a cool-toned steely gray in the dog world, so don’t expect to see bright blue or teal Yorkies anytime soon!

Meet 9 Adorable Parti Yorkies

Now that you know what the breed standard Yorkie colors look like, let’s dive into Parti-color Yorkies! Partis usually have a combination of white coloring plus standard Yorkie colors like blue, black, tan, and gold. There are also some extra-special Parti Yorkies whose coloring is so unique you might question whether you’re still looking at a purebred Yorkshire Terrier!

Without further ado, enjoy a selection of nine Parti Yorkies pictures generously shared by their humans on Instagram.

1. Tito

Tito the Parti Yorkie

Tiny Tito is a five-year-old mostly white Parti Yorkie from California who—despite his small size—loves to hike and go on outdoor adventures with his brother and human companions. Tito’s brother is a traditional blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier, and they almost look like different breeds!

2. Dolly

Dolly the Parti Yorkie
Source: @RickP83

Sweet little Dolly is a chocolate Parti Yorkie, which is a rare and highly sought-after color! Chocolate is not a breed-standard color for Yorkshire Terriers and is rare on its own. When combined with the recessive Parti gene, chocolate becomes even rarer. Dolly is still just a pup, but she’s already living a pampered life with trips to the doggy spa, lots of naps, and plenty of time to play.

3. Milo

Milo the Parti Yorkie
Source: @Milo_The_Teacup_Parti_Yorkie

In this photo, Milo is just a puppy, but he won’t grow much more than this! Teacup Parti Yorkies like Milo are purebred Yorkshire Terriers whose parents, grandparents, etc., were selectively bred for their petite stature. “Teacup” isn’t an official size variation of the standard Yorkie, but rather an unofficial name for the purposeful breeding of extra-small dogs. Teacup dogs often have more health issues than standard-sized small dogs, but they sure are cute!

4. Rocket Roux

Rocket the Parti Yorkie

Rocket Roux’s white coloring is so unique, and looks almost like platinum blonde! This little Parti Yorkie might not immediately look tri-colored, but she has a white base/chest, blue fur on her back, and a golden head and mane—what a gorgeous pup.

5. Ramenius

Ramenius is a super sweet little Parti Yorkie from Seattle, Washington who is mostly white with a blue saddle tan and a gold mask and ears. A cheerful pup who loves to go everywhere with his humans, Ramenius is just a little ball of sunshine!

6. Lucky

7. Boba

Boba is a “beefy” 3.5-pound Parti Yorkie with typical Terrier confidence that struts his stuff on the streets of the Big Apple! Three years old and quite the handsome little man, Boba would look like a traditional blue and gold Yorkshire Terrier if it weren’t for his white chest and legs.

8. Tinsley

Tinsley the Parti Yorkie

Tinsley is a senior Parti Yorkie and looks super happy and healthy at twelve years old! Tinsley lives a super fun life with sister Stella and their humans in Las Vegas and is mostly white with just a few patches of black and golden face.

9. Louie

Louie the Parti Yorkie
Source: @LouieThePartiYorkie

Louie is a five-year-old Parti Yorkie from Colorado who might, at first glance, look like a traditional blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier. Once you take a closer look at little Louie, you’ll notice that he has a white base coat with a tan face and a blue saddle tan. What a little teddy bear!

Parti Yorkie Basic Info

What is a Parti Yorkie? Is it a true Yorkshire Terrier, or is it a mix of two different breeds? Parti Yorkies are purebred, 100% Yorkshire Terriers and can be kennel club registered despite their non-standard colors. While you won’t be able to show a Parti Yorkie in breed conformation shows, there’s no other difference between owning a standard-colored Yorkie and a Parti Yorkie.

To produce these uniquely colored pups, Parti Yorkie breeders perform genetic testing on their breeding pairs, searching for a recessive gene that produces the white fur and tri-coloration of Parti Yorkies. Breeders who are invested in the breed standard of Yorkshire Terriers may also perform DNA testing to eliminate this recessive gene from their bloodlines, but it is not harmful to the dog’s health and is purely an aesthetic choice.

Dogs like Parti Yorkies are easy to fall in love with—they’re just so darn cute! Before you decide to bring any dog into your home, it’s important to find out whether that breed will be right for your lifestyle. Yorkshire Terriers are terrific pets, but don’t expect these adorable little dogs to act like stuffed animals—they have the courageous heart of a ratting dog!

Parti Yorkie Temperament

parti yorkie
Source: SpritDog

Yorkshire Terriers—regardless of color—are affectionate, friendly, curious little dogs who bond closely with their humans, love children, and greet guests and strangers like part of the family. Even very friendly and well-socialized Yorkies can still be human-selective, and may choose one member of the family as their “person.” Not as good with dogs, some Yorkies suffer from “small dog syndrome” and may behave as though they can take on dogs 50 times their size in a fight. Sometimes reactive and vocal, Yorkies won’t hesitate to make their feelings known whether it be love and happiness or stress and annoyance.

“Yorkies have no idea they are little. They have the attitude and bravery of a dog ten times their size, trapped in a tiny fluffy body,” says a comment on a Reddit thread asking what to expect when you own a Yorkshire Terrier. “They were originally bred as ratters to hunt small vermin, and the instinct is still quite strong in some, so they aren’t typically going to be an off-leash dog, and don’t be surprised or alarmed if your Yorkie successfully catches something.”

Playful and energetic, Yorkies love physical exercise as much as mental stimulation and enjoy games, puzzles, and adventuring with their pack. Though they are often happy-go-lucky, Yorkies are also very watchful and can be territorial of their homes and families. Some can be stubborn, and their high intelligence can make them very capable of picking up on training, though they may not always be willing to take on the task of learning.

An experienced Yorkie owner, the Reddit comment continues with specific advice. “Yorkies are very smart and equally stubborn, and will rule your house! They are exceptionally loyal and every one of the 8 I’ve personally had throughout my life love nothing more than to snuggle with their person. Mine have all tended to bond very strongly with one person, and I have had some issues with separation anxiety to deal with. They can [also] be a little tricky to house train, [and] they can be yappy—be careful you don’t encourage excessive barking as a pup.”

Parti Yorkie Size

Parti Yorki
Source: Pinterest

The Parti Yorkie full-grown is a small dog and classified as a Toy Breed along with Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and Maltese. Full-grown Parti Yorkies stand around 7–8 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 3–8 pounds, or around 7 pounds on average.

Teacup Yorkies are under 5 pounds but are not an official size variant of the breed.

Parti Yorkie Health

Yorkshire Terriers are prone to several health problems that can threaten their quality of life and longevity. Like many small breeds, Yorkies are typically long-lived but can develop serious issues throughout their lifetime. If you own a Parti Yorkie, keep an eye out for signs of these health issues, and be sure to bring your dog to regular checkups with their veterinarian.

  • Cushing’s Syndrome
  • Clotting disorders (e.g. coagulopathy)

Where To Find Parti Yorkie Puppies

Parti Yorkie
Source: Pinterest

It is extremely important—especially when buying a popular breed like the Yorkshire Terrier—to do your research before you commit to a Parti Yorkie for sale. Breeding dogs is an enormous commitment and isn’t something you should do for profit. The vast majority of ethical breeders produce maybe one litter per year and place enormous emphasis on performing the proper health and genetic testing and enriching the lives of their dogs. These breeders would never sell their puppies to a pet store, so under no circumstances should you purchase a Yorkie from a pet store or similar establishment.

The best place to start looking for Parti Yorkies for sale is by contacting reputable breeders affiliated with official kennel clubs. The American Kennel Club marketplace can help you find puppies from ethical breeders near you, and you can search by breed. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America also has a comprehensive breeder referral list organized by state.

Another good way to find reputable Parti Yorkie breeders is by connecting with Parti Yorkie owners! Ask the people you meet where they found their Parti Yorkie puppy, and consider joining forums or breed enthusiast groups to start reading reviews and experiences from other dog lovers.

You can also consider adopting a Parti Yorkie! While you probably won’t find one in your local shelter, it’s always worth a visit to see if you meet your new best friend. If your heart is set on a Parti Yorkie, take a look at breed-specific rescues that specialize in Yorkshire Terriers and Yorkie mixes.

Parti Yorkie FAQ

There’s so much more to say about the Parti-colored Yorkie, but we only have time for a few more fun facts about the breed. To round things up, we’re answering some of the most frequently asked questions about the Parti Yorkie.

What is the life expectancy of a Parti Yorkie?

The average lifespan of a Parti Yorkie is 11–15 years

How much does a Parti Yorkie cost?

Prices for Parti Yorkies can vary, but on average, most breeders will ask around $1,500–$3,000 for a Parti Yorkie puppy. If you choose to adopt a Yorkie, you’ll probably pay around $150–$500 depending on the rescue/shelter you work with.

Are Parti Yorkies more expensive than traditional Yorkies?

Often, yes, Parti Yorkies are more expensive than Yorkshire Terriers in traditional colors because producing Parti Yorkies involves a recessive gene which can be harder to isolate and fewer puppies in each litter will show the physical traits of the Parti gene.

Do Parti Yorkies need regular grooming?

Yes! Yorkshire Terriers have fur that grows continuously, so you will need to give your Parti Yorkie haircuts regularly both for their comfort and for the health of their coat. Professional grooms in addition to regular brushing and home coat care are necessary parts of owning a Yorkie.

This popular and adorable style is not only visually appealing but also functional for your Yorkshire Terrier’s coat maintenance. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the various aspects of the teddy bear cut to help you achieve that perfect look for your beloved pet.

We’ll explore different variations of the teddy bear yorkie haircut, such as the messy look and “The Karen” variation. Additionally, we’ll provide tips on preparing your Yorkie for their new hairstyle by showering them properly and using pet-specific clippers to trim their coat.

Furthermore, our discussion will cover length and style options like squared facial trims and medium-to-long hair choices to suit your dog’s unique personality. To ensure lasting results, we’ll share recommendations on maintaining your Yorkie’s coat post-haircut through proper bathing frequency and combing routines.

Lastly, we’ll discuss alternative haircut options like Schnauzer-style cuts or full-length silky styles if you wish to experiment with other looks. We’ll also touch upon how adaptable the Teddy Bear Cut is in terms of weather conditions by examining its compatibility with different hair textures and coverage benefits during various seasons.

Preparing Your Yorkie for a Teddy Bear Haircut

Before giving your Yorkie the teddy bear cut, make sure they’re well-groomed. Start by giving them a bath and trimming their coat with pet-specific clippers. Then, use a pet comb to brush out any knots or tangles for a smooth finish.

Brushing Out Knots and Tangles with a Pet Comb

Keep your beloved furball’s coat free of knots and tangles with a high-quality Yorkie comb or brush. Regular grooming with a pet comb can help keep your furry companion’s skin in good condition as well as make them look nice. Remember, a well-groomed pup is a happy pup.

Choosing the Right Length for Your Yorkie’s Teddy Bear Cut

Prepping your pup’s coat is crucial before deciding on the perfect length for their teddy bear cut. Opt for a squared facial trim for a polished appearance or leave your Yorkshire Terrier’s body hair medium-to-long for a distinctive look.

Squared Facial Trims for a Polished Appearance

A classic yorkie haircut involves cutting the face coat close to create a neat and tidy appearance. However, with a teddy bear cut, you can opt for slightly fluffy cheeks that frame your yorkie’s face beautifully while still maintaining cleanliness around their eyes and mouth. This cuddly style is perfect for pet parents who want their furry pal to have a charming look without compromising hygiene.

Medium-to-Long Hair Lengths Tumbling Over Ears

If you’re tired of seeing the same old puppy cut at every dog park, consider leaving your Yorkshire Terrier’s body hair longer, especially around its ears, to achieve that sought-after teddy bear style. A mid-length cut frames your beloved furball’s natural body shape nicely while allowing tan hair longer strands to cascade elegantly down either side of its head like tiny waterfalls. Just remember: breeds like Yorkies require frequent grooming appointments when sporting such lengthy locks; otherwise, they risk becoming tangled or matted quickly (source).

Maintaining Your Yorkie’s Coat Post-Haircut

After giving your beloved furball a teddy bear yorkie haircut, it is essential to keep their coat in top condition. Regular bathing and combing will ensure that your Yorkie’s hair remains shiny, silky, and tangle-free. In addition, frequent grooming appointments help maintain the softness of their coat while preventing matting.

Frequent Baths to Maintain Shine in the Coat

To preserve the lustrous appearance of your Yorkshire Terrier’s coat after a teddy bear cut, make sure you bathe them regularly using pet-friendly shampoos and conditioners. Bathing regularly with pet-appropriate shampoos and conditioners will help keep your Yorkie’s skin healthy while avoiding the accumulation of dirt or other particles on their fur.

Combing Regularly to Prevent Matting

One crucial aspect of maintaining your Yorkie’s post-haircut look is regular combing sessions with a high-quality pet comb. By doing so, you can easily detangle knots and remove loose hairs from their silky coat before they become matted or unmanageable.

Breeds Require Regular Grooming

Like many other breeds in the terrier group, Yorkshire Terriers need consistent care for their coats due to rapid growth rates, making at-home grooming an absolute must.

Slight Maintenance Cut

Teddy Bear Haircut

Opt for a low-maintenance hairstyle like the puppy forever cut if you want minimal upkeep between professional grooming visits. This no-fuss style keeps your furry pal looking adorable without much effort required on behalf of busy dog parents everywhere.

Grooming Tools

Teddy Bear Haircut

Adapting Hairstyles for Your Yorkie According to Weather Conditions

In colder weather, give your Yorkie a stylish and practical Teddy Bear cut. This cut follows the natural curves of your Yorkshire Terrier’s face, making it perfect for both long-haired and cottony-haired variations. Plus, it offers excellent coat coverage while still being relatively easy to maintain.

The Versatility of Teddy Bear Cuts During Cold Seasons

One of the main reasons why many Yorkie parents choose the teddy bear cut is because it provides warmth and protection from harsh winter elements without compromising on style. The slightly fluffy body hair helps insulate your furry pal against cold temperatures while maintaining a cuddly appearance that’s sure to turn heads at the dog park. Additionally, this low-maintenance hairstyle requires less frequent grooming appointments compared to longer styles like show dog cuts or Schnauzer trims.

Suitability of This Cut for Both Long-Haired and Cottony-Haired Yorkies

No matter what type of coat your beloved furball has, they can rock a teddy bear yorkie haircut. For long-haired Yorkies with silky coats, keeping their body fluffy yet trimmed ensures their tan hair remains longer than their blue-gray undercoat. On the other hand, if you have a cottony-coated Yorkshire Terrier with more wavy locks, opt for trimming their face coat close in order to achieve that buzz-cut style making them look like an adorable puppy forever.

Besides offering warmth and comfort during chilly months, adapting hairstyles according to weather conditions also promotes overall health by preventing matting issues commonly associated with wet or snowy environments. So go ahead and give your precious pup a stylish makeover that suits their unique personality and coat type while keeping them cozy all winter long.

Key Takeaway:

The Teddy Bear cut is a practical and stylish haircut for Yorkies during colder weather. Adapting hairstyles according to weather conditions promotes overall health by preventing matting issues commonly associated with wet or snowy environments.

Exploring Other Haircut Options for Your Yorkshire Terrier

There are numerous fantastic haircut options available for Yorkshire Terriers. However, it’s crucial to analyze several aspects beforehand to determine which one best suits your furry friend’s needs. Some popular alternatives to the teddy bear yorkie haircut include Schnauzer-style cuts and full-length silky styles inspired by show dogs.

Schnauzer-Style Cuts with Longer Whiskers, Eyebrows, and Ears

Yorkie Teddy Bear Haircut

Schnauzer trim hairstyle is an excellent option for a low-maintenance hairstyle that still showcases your Yorkie’s unique personality. This style involves cutting the body hair short while leaving whiskers, eyebrows, and ears slightly longer. It gives your beloved furball a distinguished appearance without requiring frequent grooming appointments.

Full-Length Silky Styles Inspired by Show Dogs

Yorkie Teddy Bear Haircut

If you want to flaunt your Yorkie’s natural beauty with a long-length cut, consider opting for a show dog cut. This luxurious style allows pet parents to showcase their Yorkie’s silky coat in all its glory while also maintaining proper hygiene through regular brushing sessions. Keep in mind that this look requires more commitment than other hairstyles due to its need for daily maintenance.

There are plenty of other adorable yorkie haircuts tailored specifically towards accommodating various weather conditions or personal preferences, such as the summer cut or puppy forever style. Ultimately, it comes down to what works best for both you and your furry pal. For a contented and vigorous Yorkie, consistent grooming is essential; thus, don’t be afraid to try out different looks until you locate the ideal one for your pup.

Do Yorkshire Terriers Shed? A Guide to Yorkshire Terrier Coat Management https://rockykanaka.com/do-yorkshire-terriers-shed/ https://rockykanaka.com/do-yorkshire-terriers-shed/#comments Tue, 21 Mar 2023 20:00:33 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=23811 Do Yorkshire Terriers Shed?

Known for their elegant looks and somewhat spicy demeanor. As fierce terriers, they embody powerful hunters, yet their long, luscious coats make them excellent show dogs. That brings us to our next question: how much do Yorkshire Terriers shed? With the sheer length of their coats, it must be a lot… right?

Do Yorkies have Hair or Fur?

Before getting into the question of “how much do Yorkies shed?” we first need to address a surprising elephant in the room. Yorkies don’t have fur– they have hair. As one of the few dogs with hair instead of fur, they make a great hypoallergenic breed, regardless of how much they shed.

How Much Do Yorkshire Terriers Shed?

So, how much do these little guys shed anyway? Well, like a lot of dogs with only one coat layer, Yorkshire terriers shed year-round. Since their hair is a lot like ours, though, Yorkie shedding isn’t as allergy-inducing as shed fur from other dogs. Yorkies don’t shed much, either: only expect a few hairs on your couch each day.

Are Yorkies High Maintenance?

Although Yorkies are considered hypoallergenic, they’re a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to maintenance. On the one hand, Yorkies are so small that they don’t need nearly as much space to exercise as a big dog. However, they need frequent grooming to ensure their coat stays healthy and reduce body odor. The grooming isn’t too big of a deal for some people, but for others, it makes Yorkies a high-maintenance breed.

All Yorkies need a weekly bath to remove excess oils and sweat from their bodies, which leads to a pungent odor. If your Yorkie has longer hair, they will also need daily brushing to free up any loose hairs.

Is Shedding Healthy for a Yorkie?

a yorkie

It’s completely normal and healthy for a Yorkie to lose some hair throughout the day– everything with hair or fur sheds, after all. However, excess shedding is often a sign that something is wrong with your dog. Hair loss is a common sign of stress, a poor diet, or allergies. On the more serious side of things, excessive hair loss may also indicate that your puppy is sick or may have parasites.

As you live with your Yorkie, you’ll establish a baseline for how much shedding is considered “healthy.” If you start to notice an increase in shedding, red, itchy skin, or if you spot bald patches and thinning hair on your Yorkie, see a veterinarian immediately.

Yorkie Mixes and Shedding

Yorkie mixes may shed more than purebred Yorkies, depending on what breed they’re mixed with.

Do Yorkie-Poos Shed?

As a trendy mix, Yorkie-poos combine the curly poodle with the hairy Yorkie. Since both dog breeds are hypoallergenic, Yorkie-poos are too! They do still shed, though.

Do Maltese Yorkies Shed?

Maltese Yorkies are another popular breed that many dog lovers fawn over. Since both breeds are hypoallergenic (they have hair instead of fur) and tend to be low-shedders, expect a few stray hairs here and there.

How to Manage Yorkie Shedding

So, how do you manage Yorkie hair? Generally speaking, there are a few things you can do to ensure that your Yorkie’s coat is luscious and healthy:

Grooming at Home

Yorkies need frequent grooming to ensure that they don’t get stinky! Over time, oils from their skin and sweat from their paws will build up to create some nasty body odor. To keep your Yorkie smelling fresh and their hair strong and fine, it’s best to maintain a regular grooming schedule.

Do I need to Brush a Yorkie?

Yorkies with long hair need daily brushing to detangle the hair, remove loose hairs, and distribute oils evenly throughout their coat. Short-hair Yorkies can benefit from a good brushing too, but you won’t need to brush them nearly as often. When brushing your Yorkie, I recommend using a slicker brush or a small hairbrush to gently work out tangles. Since Yorkie hair is so similar to human hair, kids’ brushes and smaller combs are okay to use.

The Slicker Brush

Buy the Hertzko Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush ($15.99)

Remember to be gentle when dealing with matted hair– work through your Yorkie’s hair like you would your own. A wide-toothed comb works wonders for removing mats. To start, detangle the as much of the matted hair with your fingers as possible. Then, working from the ends of the hair upward, gently comb out the matted area.

The Matting Brush

At-Home Baths

Yorkies need a bath at least once a week, lest they get some nasty B.O. When washing your Yorkie’s coat, use a moisturizing dog shampoo to keep their hair from drying out and becoming brittle. Even though Yorkies have hair similar to ours, DO NOT use human shampoo on your Yorkie. Human shampoos contain scents and chemicals that can harm your dog.

yorkie getting a bath

If your Yorkie has sensitive skin, try to find dog shampoos that are paraben-free and unscented. Shampoos made with oats is a great place to start!

Other Grooming Tips

In addition to regular baths and brushing, keep an eye on your dog’s nails, too. Jagged, sharp nails may scrape and scratch the skin when your dog tries to itch itself, and nobody likes accidental cuts! If your dog’s nails start to look jagged, trim them or take them to a groomer.

For Yorkies, regular paw cleaning during bathtime is a good way to help eliminate odor from around the paws.

Visiting the Groomer’s

Yorkie grooming

When combined with regular baths, the groomer is essentially a trip to the salon for a Yorkshire terrier. Groomers are best equipped to handle trimming dog hair, and can help keep your Yorkie safe from the dreaded poopy butt syndrome

Food Matters

Your food choices also play a role in your Yorkie’s coat health. Food allergies or lack of nutrients can lead to hair loss or dry, itchy skin, so making sure that your dog’s nutritional needs are completely covered is the best way to ensure their coat stays healthy. For Yorkies, you’ll need to give them a balanced diet with mainly meat, supplemented by smaller amounts of fruits and vegetables.

Keeping up with the Doctor

All good pet parents take their furry friends to the vet regularly. Annual vet visits are essential to keep your Yorkie up-to-date on their vaccines and necessary medications and discuss their general health. Physical exams also establish a health baseline for your vet so that if anything goes wrong, they’ll know what to look for first.

Yorkshire Terrier Nutritional Needs

Don’t let the small stature of the Yorkie fool you—these little dogs need the same basic nutrition as Great Danes, Pitbulls, and Golden Retrievers.

But, like any other dog breed, the Yorkshire Terrier needs to have protein, fat, and fiber to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Facultative carnivores like all other dog breeds, Yorkie’s do best when their diet contains animal protein and fat mixed with small amounts of fruits and vegetables.

Yorkshire Terrier Health

Known to live to incredible ages of more than 18–20, Yorkies are generally healthy little dogs when properly cared for. In later life, Yorkies are prone to a number of health conditions, but these can typically be managed with food, lifestyle, and veterinary intervention.

Some common health issues Yorkies may be prone to include:

  • Dental disease
  • Spinal injuries
  • Patellar luxation & hip dysplasia
  • Heart disease
  • Tracheal collapse
  • Hypoglycemia

Dental disease is particularly prevalent in Yorkies, who may need veterinary tooth cleanings and extractions later in life. Dental disease isn’t just uncomfortable—it can fuel heart disease, cause systemic infections and inflammation, and shorten your Yorkies’s lifespan.

Preventing dental disease isn’t so much about what you feed your dog and more about what you don’t feed your dog. There are a number of opinions on what foods fuel dental disease, with some vets adamantly recommending high-carb kibbles despite their higher glycemic index.

Carbs—sugars—can both inflame your Yorkshire Terrier’s body, and are more likely to stick in the crevices of your dog’s mouth than low-carb diets. Protein-rich diets are less likely to inflame or enhance dental disease.

To address possible hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in Yorkies, it’s important to feed them a balanced, biologically appropriate diet. Each option on this list fits that bill.

Key Nutrients for Yorkshire Terriers

It’s not possible to prevent or cure illness or disease in your Yorkie with diet alone, but you can give your pup the best chance of a healthy life. Part of ensuring your dog’s diet is balanced is making sure they are getting the right micronutrients for their needs. To address some of the common health problems Yorkies have, we recommend finding the best dog food for yorkies that are high in the following vitamins and minerals.

NutrientUsesSources
B Vitamins– Anti-inflammatory- Supports muscle and joint health– Eggs- Fish- Goat milk- Liver- Red meat
Chondroitin– Supports tracheal health- Supports joint health– Fish- Poultry and bird cartilage – Pork cartilage

In some cases, your vet might suggest adding extra meal toppers or nutrients to your Yorkies food. For example, many people like to add green-lipped mussels or extra omega-3 oils. These can be purchased at most pet stores, online, and at some veterinary offices.

Best Food for Yorkies FAQ

Do you have more questions about the best Yorkie foods on the market? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from Yorkie owners like you.

What should I feed a picky Yorkie?

If your Yorkie is picky, they’re probably sick of eating dry, carb-heavy food. Brands like We Feed Raw, Primal, and Blue Buffalo are great for meat-obsessed dogs. NomNom basically tastes like human food, so it’s great for Yorkie’s who have a taste for sandwiches. For Yorkie’s who enjoy the crunch of kibble but not the taste, Spot & Tango’s UnKibble is packed with flavor.

What should I not feed my Yorkie?

Human food! The human diet is too high in saturated fat, salt, and seasonings, and it’s just not appropriate for a dog. Yorkies are especially at risk for poor diets and are notoriously fed human food since they’re so small.

You should also avoid toxic foods for dogs like chocolate, garlic, onions, etc.

Do Yorkies need a special diet?

No, Yorkies don’t need a breed-specific diet, but they do need the right balance of nutrients. Small-breed dog food is sometimes recommended by vets, but most small breeds can eat regular dog food without an issue.

What is the best homemade food for Yorkies?

While you can make your own dog food at home, creating a completely balanced diet is quite time intensive and can be expensive. You should also consult with a vet or canine nutritionist before trying to make dog food at home. Nutrient deficiencies can be detrimental to your dog’s health, so never try to formulate dog food at home without professional help.

What is the best food for Yorkie with no teeth?

Soft dog foods that require little chewing are the best options for Yorkies with no teeth. Raw foods like We Feed Raw and Primal are nice options, since they’re basically just mush. Blue Buffalos canned foods have a pate texture and are also easy to eat without teeth.

Should I put my Yorkie on a diet plan?

Unless your Yorkie is overweight, suffering from a specific health condition, or has allergies, they should not be put on a diet. Your vet will be able to tell you if your dog requires a new diet, less or more food, or prescription dog food.

Be sure you are taking your dog to the vet at least once a year to consult with them about your dog’s nutritional needs.

What is the best wet food for a Yorkie puppy?

Blue Buffalo’s small breed dog food will work for a Yorkie puppy, but it’s not specifically formulated for growing dogs. Sticking with Blue Buffalo, we think that their canned puppy food is a contender for the best dog food for Yorkie puppies.

What is the best dog food for Yorkie Terrier mixes?

Yorkie Terrier mixes will have many of the same needs as a purebred Yorkie and would do well on any of the dog food brands listed above.
