10. Buttercup: 10-year-old Shi-Poo Lapdog

Buttercup
Credit: Saving Grace and Her Furry Friends

Buttercup is a 10-year-old 10 lbs. Shih Tzu poodle mix (Shi-Poo). She is partially blind, but otherwise very healthy. She was found tied to a fence at a dog park one morning in September. She has adjusted very well to life with her foster family. Buttercup is a complete and total lap dog. If you’re looking for a dog that will stay on your lap and enjoy spending time with you, this is the dog for you. She absolutely loves sitting next to you on the couch or sitting on your lap while you’re looking at your phone or working on your computer or paying bills. She is also the perfect nap buddy…. she loves to take naps with her person. She loves to go on walks, and is great on a leash, and she’s completely housebroken.

She gets along well with other dogs, and I have not seen her with cats, but I would imagine that she would be fine she stays by herself and doesn’t bother anyone. She’s a great eater, and loves mealtime. She is a little bit on the needy side. That comes from being abandoned by her family. However, in the month that she has been with her foster family, she has begun to relax and trust that when we leave in the morning, we always come back and later on in the day. She will need some adjustment time to trust her new forever family. Because of her neediness and her past trauma I would recommend a home where someone works from home, or a retired couple who are home most of the time, as she is the happiest when she is with her people. This Shih Tzu Was Nearly Put Down—Until a 3-Pound Tumor Changed Everything https://rockykanaka.com/shih-tzu-with-3-pound-tumor/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=112600 Rafta, a senior Shih Tzu, endured heartbreaking neglect and abandonment at a time when he needed compassion the most. Dumped at the shelter, filthy, matted, and covered in his own waste, Rafta’s condition was already devastating—but nothing prepared the staff for the sight of an enormous mass near his back end, which made it difficult for him to even walk. (Watch Video Below)

@trueandfaithful They left him suffering, but we refused to walk away🥺💔.. Rafta was dumped at the shelter with a 2.9-pound mass and barely able to walk. His owners didn’t care. But we did. We rushed him into surgery, spent over $6,000, and gave him the chance they never did. Now, he’s recovering at our sanctuary safe, pain free, and surrounded by love. We still need to raise $2,604.88 to cover his life saving care. Will you help us finish what we started🙏🥺 🔗Link in Bio to Donate❤️ #rescuedog #shelter #senior #dog #shihtzu ♬ Rivers and Roads – The Head And The Heart

When questioned, his former owners coldly suggested euthanasia, as if his life held no worth. But just when Rafta’s story seemed destined for a tragic end, True & Faithful Pet Rescue Mission (TFPRM) stepped in and gave him a second chance.

Lifesaving Surgery

Once Rafta was in their care, the South Florida-based TFRPM discovered the shocking extent of his condition—a massive 15 cm perineal hernia that would require a complex, 3+ hour surgery to repair. He also suffered from severe grade 4 dental disease, making his situation even more dire.

But the rescue didn’t hesitate. Despite the steep cost of over $6,000, they moved quickly to get Rafta the life-saving medical care he desperately needed. The surgery was a success, and for the first time in a long time, this brave senior dog was finally free from pain.

Rafta is now recovering at the rescue’s sanctuary, surrounded by comfort, kindness, and the love he was once cruelly denied.

Be Part of Rafta’s Healing Journey

The rescue turned to their incredible community of supporters on social media to help cover the cost of Rafta’s lifesaving care—and thankfully, many stepped up. But Rafta still needs around $2,600 to fully fund his treatment and aftercare.

If you can, make a contribution here. Every dollar makes a difference, and any donation—big or small—helps not just Rafta, but other senior dogs counting on this rescue for a second chance.

Rafta may have been discarded by those who should’ve protected him, but he’s now surrounded by people who see his worth and are committed to giving him the gentle, love-filled life he’s always deserved. That love is echoed by countless TikTok users following his journey, with one commenter writing: “Look at Rafta!!! 🥰 Thank you, TFPRM, for everything you do for these little guys!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻”

Meanwhile, pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka also expresses his support for Rafta, saying, “Rafta’s story breaks your heart—but it also shows the incredible power of rescue. Dogs like Rafta aren’t broken—they’re just waiting for someone to believe in them.”

She Lost Her Soul Dog—Then Spent $50,000 Hoping to Bring a Piece of Him Back https://rockykanaka.com/she-lost-her-soul-dog-then-spent-50000-hoping-to-bring-a-piece-of-him-back/ Sun, 14 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=132466 When Venessa Johnson first heard that a family in California needed to rehome their 6-year-old Shih Tzu more than a decade ago, she didn’t hesitate. She opened her heart and her home to Oliver. He became her constant companion until his death from cancer in December 2024, a loss she describes as utterly devastating.

Grief pushed Johnson into a choice she now calls “not proud of”: spending $50,000 to clone her deceased dog. This November, she brought home the tiny puppy created from Oliver’s DNA to fill the void left by her beloved furry friend. (Watch Video Below)

@venessamj The puppy comes home in 2 days! I decided to clone Oliver one month after he passed through Viagen pets. I was grieving deeply and this felt like a lifeline. I highly encourage people to foster and adopt and I plan to again in the future. #fyp #cloneddog #petgrief #puppy ♬ original sound – Venessa Johnson

Why Venessa Now Questions Her Decision to Clone Oliver

While searching online for ways to cope with losing Oliver to cancer, she stumbled into the world of pet cloning, as per People. This was something she had never considered until grief pushed her toward anything that felt like hope. As a result, she contacted the cloning company Viagen. The process involved a vet collecting Oliver’s skin cells, which were then multiplied in a lab.

Source: TikTok

Scientists removed the DNA from a donor egg, inserted Oliver’s DNA, and placed the embryo into a surrogate dog. After two failed attempts, the third transfer succeeded, resulting in three cloned puppies. Venessa brought one home, spending around $50,000 for the chance to recreate part of the bond she had lost.

With time, however, she sees her choice more clearly. She admits the cost was extreme and recognizes that the clone is not Oliver, just a genetic copy. Looking back, Venessa believes grief clouded her judgment, and she now wishes she had waited, healed, and adopted a senior dog in need instead.

“I know it’s not Oliver coming back to me. It’s a piece of him, but it’s not him,” she says. “Had I waited and grieved properly, I absolutely would not have made this decision.”

Dog Cloning: What is It?

Most people have heard of cloning only in the context of science experiments, but the idea entered the mainstream in 2017 when Barbra Streisand revealed she had her beloved dog, Samantha, cloned after losing her.

Instead of saying goodbye forever, she chose a path that allowed a part of Samantha to live on through two new puppies. Cloning doesn’t recreate the same animal, but it does create a genetic copy, much like identical twins who share the same DNA but grow into their own distinct personalities.

Since then, other celebrities, including Tom Brady and Paris Hilton, have embraced the trend of cloning their dogs.

Source: Instagram

How does it work?

Cloning a dog isn’t as simple as creating a single genetic copy. According to National Geographic, it actually requires the help of several other dogs along the way. To begin, scientists need a small tissue sample from the original pet. They then collect multiple egg cells from donor dogs and carefully remove each egg’s nucleus, the part that contains its DNA. Into this empty space, they insert the genetic material from the dog being cloned.

Once the new cell is created, it’s given a tiny burst of electricity to encourage it to start dividing, almost like jump-starting life. That developing embryo is then placed into a surrogate mother who will carry the pregnancy.

About 60 days later, the cloned puppies are born, sometimes through surgery if complications arise. It’s a complex process involving multiple animals, advanced technology, and careful coordination, all to bring a genetically identical puppy into the world.

Yorkie Meets Shih Tzu: Why Shorkies Are Stealing Hearts Everywhere https://rockykanaka.com/yorkie-meets-shih-tzu-why-shorkies-are-stealing-hearts-everywhere/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 17:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=97345 Shorkies are small dogs with teddy bear-like features, beautiful silky fur, and social personalities, but what is a Shorkie exactly, and why have you never heard of this dog breed?

Shorkies

Shorkies are mixed-breed dogs with two main parent breeds: Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier. Considered a “designer dog” because they are a deliberate mix and not an accidental mix, Shorkies emerged from the same world as other more common mixes like the Cavachon and the mini Aussiedoodle. Diminutive in size but big in personality, the Shorkie is a lesser-known but still much-beloved mix. Social, affectionate, and deeply loyal to their humans, Shorkies are lovely little dogs that can also give their owners a run for their money.

@bradieboyyy So lucky to be this little guys Mom 💙😭 #shorkie #puppylove #dogsoftiktok #doglover ♬ original sound – Bradie

Mixing two dog breeds doesn’t always yield predictable—or expected—results. Some Shorkies will inherit more traits from their Shih Tzu parent, while others will be more similar to their Yorkshire Terrier side. Some Shorkies might be the perfect mix of Shih Tzu and Yorkie, while others might display few or almost none of the traits of their parent breeds.

This TikTok user was expecting one thing but got quite the other!

@nodaddyash 🐶 #TalkToAnimals #shorkie #xyzbca ♬ unexpected me – Spencer Aitken

“I found with [my Shorkie] that she has a lot of Yorkie Tendencies, more than Shih Tzu,” says a Reddit comment from a Shorkie owner describing his dog’s personality. “She was very high-energy [as a puppy] and still has a lot of energy a year later…very loving but she has a temper as well. She loves people but not other critters. That might just be mine—she has a strong personality.”

Put simply, every Shorkie is an individual, but learning from the experiences of other Shorkie owners, browsing breed guides like this one, and meeting Shorkies in real life can give you a general idea of what life with one of these pups would look like.

Meet 5 Shorkie Dogs

We can’t continue without looking at some Shorkie pictures so you can have a better picture of the dogs we’re discussing. Each of these pups is a mix of Shih Tzu and Yorkshire Terrier and one is on the hunt for a family to call his own. If you’re searching for an adoptable Shorkie, he might be the one!

1. Poochie (Available for Adoption!)

3. Honey

Adorable Honey lives in the Welsh countryside where she gets to spend lots of time outside exploring and finding the best sticks.

4. Brooklyn

Four-year-old Shorkie Brooklyn has excellent taste in jewelry, but her best accessory is that adorable underbite!

5. Larry

Larry is an adorable adopted Shorkie with a big, playful personality. Living in Ontario, Canada, Larry doesn’t let cold weather or snow stop him—he needs to get his daily romps in regardless of the temperature!

Shorkie Basic Info

Shorkies are mixed-breed dogs with no official breed standards—this means it can be a little hard to nail down their specific traits like temperament, health, and size. Luckily, there are plenty of people who have owned this mix to share their experiences with us, and some educated guesses to be made based on what we know about the Shorkie’s parent breeds.

From how to structure training sessions and what kinds of households Shorkies do best in to full-grown Shorkie size and health details, here’s what you need to know about owning a Shorkie.

Shorkie Temperament

Shorkies are social and loyal little dogs who bond closely with their family members and prefer being with them over almost all else. Some Shorkies are so attached to their humans that they become prone to separation anxiety, so they aren’t a good choice for people who need to be away from their dogs most of the day. Shorkies that take after their Yorkshire Terrier parents may have higher energy than those that take after their Shih Tzu parents, but most Shorkies enjoy light exercise, going for walks, and playing.

“[My Shorkies] are both lovely little dogs, 8 and 8 years old now, and just sleep most of the day. Easy going, low maintenance. Mine don’t need much exercise and are just happy to be on the couch with us,” says a Reddit commenter who owns two Shorkies. “I’ve also had a full Shih Tzu and there’s not much difference, they are just smaller and coats are easier to maintain. They are both barkers but the standard Shih Tzu was too.”

@belle.carmack convinced shorkies are the best dogs 🩷 we love our millie girl 🐶 #shorkie #shihtzu #yorkie #dog #dogsoftiktok #puppy #puppylove #milliemae ♬ Get Ready – Steve Aoki Vocal Radio Edit – 2 Unlimited

Brave and sometimes territorial, Shorkies can be wary of strangers at first and may act a bit like tiny guard dogs. Shorkies may bark to alert and can be vocal to get their points across, and may not enjoy living in apartments or shared spaces with lots of activity. Sometimes stubborn and strong-willed, Shorkies are intelligent and thankfully easy to train with the right combination of positive reinforcement consistency.

Shorkies can be amazing family dogs, but because of their small size and assertive personalities, they are not recommended for families with small children. Early socialization and consistently working on training your Shorkie can make them more adaptable and comfortable in all situations, but keep in mind that these small dogs may be quick to react if they are fearful or not being respected.

Shorkie Size

Shorkies are small dogs that stand 7–11 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 7–16 pounds.

Shorkie Health

Shorkies can inherit genetic health issues from either parent breed but may have a higher rate of health problems than their purebred parents as a consequence of unregulated cross-breeding. Some health problems to consider and keep an eye out for if you own a Shorkie include:

  • Joint problems (e.g. patellar luxation)
  • Dental issues
  • Eye and vision problems (e.g. cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy)
  • Ear infections
  • Allergies
  • Breathing issues (e.g. brachycephalic syndrome)
  • Cushing’s disease

Where To Find Shorkie Dogs For Sale

Shorkies breeders are unregulated and typically operate as backyard breeders and puppy mills in the United States. Because of this, it’s best to avoid buying Shorkie puppies from “breeders” and opt for adoption instead. Mixed-breed dogs are endlessly available at shelters and animal rescues, and it’s quite easy to find a mix you’re interested in. Shih Tzu mixes are particularly common thanks to the popularity of the breed, and you can also search breed-specific rescues if your heart is set on a mix of a certain breed.

Shorkie Dogs FAQ

Don’t end your quest for Shorkie knowledge here—there’s a lot more to know about this designer dog. Just look at what others are asking about the Shorkie mix.

How long do Shorkies live?

The average Shorkie lifespan—as determined by looking at the lifespan of the two parent breeds—is 10–18 years.

Are Shorkies recognized by any kennel clubs?

Shorkies are not purebred dogs and are not recognized by any official kennel clubs like the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club. Newer, less broadly recognized organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club recognize designer breeds and mixes like the Shorkie but do not list any breed details or standards.

Do Shorkies shed a lot?

No, Shorkies are low to moderate-shedding dogs. Both Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzus are low-shedding breeds with mid-length to long coats.

How often do Shorkie dogs need to be groomed?

Shorkies should be groomed every 4–8 weeks to manage coat length, prevent matting, and maintain your chosen Shorkie haircut styles. You can learn to groom your Shorkie at home, but having your dog professionally groomed is often safer and yields better results. Whether or not you get your Shorkie professionally groomed, you should perform regular coat maintenance at home. Daily brushing and regular baths can help keep your Shorkie haircuts looking good between fully grooms.

Remember that Shorkie coats need to be groomed for their entire lives—this is an expense you must be prepared for before you choose this or any other breed with similar grooming needs. Neglecting to groom your Shorkie doesn’t just look bad, it can lead to health issues, discomfort, and pain for your pup.

Groomers often also offer basic dental care which can help keep your Shorkie from developing dental disease, which is common in this small breed.

What is a teacup Shorkie?

A teacup Shorkie is a Shih Tzu and teacup Yorkshire Terrier mix. “Teacup” Yorkshire Terriers are Yorkies that have been deliberately bred to be even smaller than the breed standard but are not an official size. While very cute, “teacup” dogs often suffer from genetic and congenital health issues not associated with their standard-sized counterparts.

What is a Shorkie Poo?

A Shorkie Poo is a mix of Shih Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, and Poodle. This can be achieved by crossing a Shorkie with a purebred Poodle, crossing a Yorkipoo with a purebred Shih Tzu, or crossing a Shih-Poo with a Yorkshire Terrier.

When Sophie, a senior Shih Tzu, became sick and lethargic, her vet initially suspected a simple stomach ache. But after three days with no improvement, a visit to a larger veterinary hospital uncovered the real issue: Ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne illness. (Watch TikTok below!)

Sophie’s Symptoms

The 13-year-old Shih Tzu, Sophie, was weak, lethargic, wheezing, and had no appetite. The dog mom shared in a TikTok video that Sophie’s health had suddenly deteriorated within just a few days. After the first vet visit, her condition worsened further, as the vet had misdiagnosed her with a tummy ache and prescribed medication that didn’t help her at all.

@ninspilao Please get well soon anak 🥺… #ehrlichiapositive #seniordogsoftiktok #shihtzu #fyp #getwellsoon #prayersneeded ♬ Somewhere Only We Know – Gustixa & Rhianne

As a result, Sophie’s mom decided to take her to a different veterinary hospital. There, the vet checked her weight and temperature and ran bloodwork, revealing a low platelet count. This prompted the vet to recommend a Snap test, which came back positive for Ehrlichiosis or Ehrlichia.

A Long Road To Recovery

After Sophie’s Ehrlichia diagnosis, the little dog was prescribed several medications, including Doxycycline Hyclate and Haemomaxx syrup. Sophie’s mom shared that it would be a “long and tedious treatment” and admitted she is especially worried about losing Sophie, having already lost her Beagle, Bagel, just four months ago.

With over 146K views, hundreds of TikTok users have prayed for Sophie’s recovery in the comments section. Meanwhile, Pet Rescue Advocate Rocky Kanaka, says, “Sophie’s journey is a reminder of how vital it is to trust our instincts and seek a second opinion when our pets aren’t feeling well. With the right care and determination, even the toughest battles can be overcome.”

What is Ehrlichiosis or Ehrlichia in Dogs?

It’s natural to worry about Sophie’s condition and wonder if your canine companion could contract Ehrlichiosis. Here’s what veterinarians have to say about the disease.

Dr. Veronica Higgs explains, “Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne (transmitted by tick bites) disease caused by infectious bacteria from the Ehrlichia genus.”

Species of ehrlichia are numerous, but Ehrlichia canis and Ehrlichia ewingii are the two most prevalent species causing ehrlichiosis in dogs in the United States.

Veterinarians at VCA Animal Hospitals describe Ehrlichia for dogs as, “a disease that develops in dogs after being bitten by an infected tick. In the United States, Ehrlichia canis is considered endemic in the southeastern and southwestern states, though the brown dog tick is found all throughout the United States and Canada.”

A pet parent, u/GoodLuckBart, shares their experience with the disease on Reddit, saying, “Our dog had this [ehrlichia] years ago, maybe 12 or so years ago. It’s been so long I can’t remember the exact treatment, but she went on to live a long life and died of old age at 15 years!”

Ehrlichia Symptoms in Dogs

The canine Ehrlichia symptoms can be divided into three phases: acute, subclinical, and chronic.

What One Vet Missed Nearly Ended This Shih Tzu's Life — Until Her Mom’s Instinct Saved the Day!
Source: TikTok

Acute Stage (Early Disease)

In the acute stage of the disease, dogs may exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Respiratory distress
  • Weight loss
  • Bleeding disorders (spontaneous hemorrhage or bleeding)
  • Neurological disturbances (unsteadiness or meningitis)

This stage typically lasts 2-4 weeks, and some dogs may eliminate the infection or progress to the subclinical phase.

Sub-Clinical Stage (No Outward Signs)

The sub-clinical stage is characterized by the absence of visible symptoms, making it challenging to detect. During this phase, the organism is present but not causing apparent disease. Dogs may exhibit laboratory changes, such as prolonged bleeding from puncture sites, and can either clear the infection or progress to clinical ehrlichiosis.

Chronic Stage (Clinical Ehrlichiosis)

If the immune system fails to eliminate the organism, dogs may develop clinical ehrlichiosis, characterized by:

  • Anemia
  • Bleeding episodes
  • Lameness
  • Eye problems (hemorrhage or blindness)
  • Neurological problems
  • Swollen limbs
  • Bone marrow failure leads to an inability to manufacture blood cells necessary for life.

To diagnose ehrlichiosis in dogs, veterinarians start by obtaining a detailed history of travel and recent tick exposure. A thorough physical examination is also conducted to check for symptoms including fever, joint swelling, and enlarged lymph nodes.

“A complete blood count, serum blood chemistry, and urinalysis will all likely be recommended for a baseline evaluation,” states Dr. Higgs. If ehrlichiosis is suspected, additional specialized laboratory testing may be ordered.

Veterinarians often use a Snap 4Dx test to check for heartworms, Lyme disease, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia. This test detects antibodies for E. canis or E. ewingii. However, a positive result in a healthy pet with no clinical signs can be confusing and may require additional testing to confirm the diagnosis.

If a dog tests positive for ehrlichiosis, the veterinarian may choose one of three options based on the presence or absence of symptoms. These options include monitoring the dog without additional therapy, treating for ehrlichiosis, or recommending additional testing, such as a PCR test.

Treatment of Ehrlichiosis in Dogs

Ehrlichiosis is typically treated with a 28- to 30-day course of antibiotics, with Doxycycline being the most commonly prescribed medication. As shared on Reddit, u/GrumpyOldDog, writes, “My dog tested positive for this a few months ago. He had no symptoms whatsoever. Vet found it at his annual heartworm screening. He did the 3 weeks of Doxy as a precaution though.”

Outpatient Care

Most dogs in the acute or subclinical phases can be managed as outpatients at home with minimal supportive care, which may include pain medications and appetite stimulants. These dogs usually do not require hospitalization.

Hospitalization for Chronic Cases

Dogs with chronic ehrlichiosis, however, may require hospitalization for aggressive supportive care. This may include blood transfusions, steroids, IV fluids, and nutritional support.

Customized Treatment Plans

It’s not uncommon for dogs with ehrlichiosis to also be infected with other tick-borne diseases, which can complicate diagnosis and treatment. Your veterinarian will work with you to customize a treatment plan that meets your dog’s specific needs.

According to Burlington Veterinary Center, the overall prognosis for dogs with acute ehrlichiosis is excellent, with most showing significant improvement within 24-48 hours of starting treatment. In fact, studies have reported a 95% ehrlichiosis in dogs survival rate. Some dogs may even recover spontaneously without treatment. However, dogs with chronic ehrlichiosis have a poorer prognosis.

What the veterinary community call tear stains or epiphora? (Watch TikTok below)

It’s an issue that frustrates far too many dog owners, given how unattractive these stains look on our beautiful canine friends. If your dog has tear stains, it’s natural to wonder what may be causing the rusty marks and what you can do to get rid of them.

Shih Tzu Owner Shares Little-Known Tip That Helped Clear Dog's Tear Stains for Good

Well, one dog owner recently revealed what helped them clear the tear stains from her Shih Tzu named Junie for good: a change of diet. In a now-viral TikTok video posted on account @junietheshihtzu, the owner presents the before and after of their Junie’s struggle with tear stains, which had discolored almost her entire face.

According to the owner, Junie’s tear stains resulted from food allergies. Thankfully, after switching Junie to a hypoallergenic diet as per the veterinarian’s advice, these stains became a thing of the past.

“Junie is a unique case [because] the most common food allergy is chicken, but she was actually allergic to turkey. So now she has lean chicken, rice, veggies, probiotics, and supplements in her food,” replied Junie’s owner in the comment section.

Tear Stains 101: What Causes Tear Stains in Dogs?

We can all agree that tear stains make our furry friends — especially light-colored dogs, whose stains are more noticeable — look somewhat sad and sorry.

The truth, though, is that these stains have nothing to do with your dog’s emotional state. Instead, they’re caused by a variety of factors. But before we dive right into these factors, let’s explore why tear stains in dogs have that hard-to-ignore rusty coloration.

You see, just like in humans, the red blood cells in your dog’s body break down naturally after a certain period to make way for new ones. The breakdown of these old red blood cells leads to the release of different waste products. Among these by-products are porphyrins.

Porphyrins are naturally occurring compounds loaded with iron. In dogs, these iron-carrying waste compounds are expelled through the tears, saliva, urine, and bile.

Now, the most common reason behind tear stains in dogs is excessive tear production (scientifically referred to as epiphora). Like us, our canine friends have tear ducts — also called nasolacrimal ducts — that empty the teary fluids from the eyes to the nasal cavity.

In other words, every time your dog’s eyes get watery, the tear ducts transport these tears, including the porphyrin-loaded tears, away from the eyes, draining them into the nose.

So, if your dog experiences increased tear production, some of the porphyrin-pigmented tears will overflow from the tear duct and down to the corners of their eyes. This rusty discoloration is often a result of the iron content in the porphyrin.

“When you look in the corner of a dog’s eyes, you may notice a red/brown discoloration in their tears. This comes from porphyrin, iron-containing molecules produced by the body when it breaks down iron. Porphyrins are excreted through the gastrointestinal tract, urine, saliva, and tears, explained expert dog groomer Gabriel Feitosa in an Instagram post.

The longer these porphyrin-loaded tear stains sit on your dog’s fur, the more discoloration they’ll cause.

5 Common Factors that Trigger Epiphora in Dogs

If you notice your dog gets tear stains too often, this could mean they’re experiencing excessive tear production (epiphora). This may be due to a number of factors, including:

1. Tear Duct Blockage

If your dog’s tear ducts get blocked, their eyes will often become watery due to the build-up of tears in the ducts. And as this happens, the porphyrin-pigmented tears will drain out of their eyes more than usual, causing persistent tear stains.

According to Veterinary Formula, flat-faced dog breeds — better known as brachycephalic breeds — are prone to blocked tear ducts and other related abnormalities. Due to their pushed-in faces, these breeds are likely to have narrower-than-average tear ducts and, ultimately, frequent tear stains. Breeds susceptible to tear staining include the Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, Boxer, Maltese, Boston Terrier, and Bulldog.

“I have two Malteses, 4 and 3 y/o. Their eyes produce a lot of tears, it’s more so with the younger one. And that creates dark tear marks around the eyes,” shared user @kakamba in a Reddit discussion on tear stains in Maltese dogs

In most cases, dogs with blocked tear ducts will need to have their ducts unblocked by a veterinarian. Below is a video of vets flushing out the excess tear fluid trapped in a dog’s tear duct:

Source: @thevetyard

2. Food or Environmental Allergies

Dogs with food intolerances are at a higher risk of excessive tear production as their immune systems respond to the food allergen. This will, in turn, lead to constant tear stains.

“The only time my Shih Tzu ever had ear stains was when eating Merrick Kibble. I don’t know what it was about that brand, but after switching, his eyes barely water and the tear stains went away almost immediately,” commented user @sparklegirl407 in a Reddit discussion on tear stain issues in dogs

Among the common food allergens in dogs’ diet include:

  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Lamb
  • Grains
  • Dairy products
  • Wheat
  • Soy

In addition, dogs constantly exposed to environmental irritants such as pollen and dust are more likely to have teary eyes and, consequently, persistent tear stains.

3. Eye Issues (or Eye Infections)

In other cases, epiphora in dogs may be due to an underlying eye issue. According to pet health experts at VCA Hospitals, eye conditions such as corneal ulcers, glaucoma, conjunctivitis, and ectopic cilia can make your furry friend experience excessive tear production and staining.

Frequent eye infections may also make your dog’s eyes more irritated, leading to excessive tearing and staining.

4. Long Hair Around the Eyes

If your dog’s eyes are surrounded by so much hair, it means they’re exposed to a constant source of irritation. The excess hair will prick their eyes most of the time, making your dog tear up (and stain) more than usual.

5. Tap Water Impurities

Ever wondered, “Does tap water cause tear stains in dogs?” The short answer is yes. Tap water is high in minerals and, therefore, can contribute to tear stains in dogs. Some dogs may be extra sensitive to these minerals present, making them experience excessive tearing and staining.

“I’m a professional dog groomer, and a vet I work with says that the impurities in the tap water can actually come out through the eyes,” commented user @Foxynbynature in a Reddit discussion on dog tear stains.

How to Clear Tear Stains in Dogs

When it comes to removing tear stains in dogs, getting to the root cause of the staining can go a long way in resolving the issue for good. Since every dog is different, it’s not advisable to hop onto every “home remedy for tear stains in dogs” that you come across online.

What we’re trying to say is, before using any over-the-counter or homemade solution to remove your dog’s tear stains, speak to your first. They will be able to rule out any underlying issue that may be causing the tear staining and recommend an appropriate solution.

That said, here are some of the common ways to get rid of tear stains and keep your dog looking their best:

  • Trim Hair Around the Eyes

Regularly trimming the overgrown hair around your dog’s eyes will protect them from constant irritation. If you’re uncomfortable doing the trimming by yourself, consider the services of a professional dog groomer.

  • Review their Diet

If you suspect your dog’s tear stains may be due to food allergies, consult your vet before making any drastic dietary changes.

  • Wipe their Eye Area Regularly

Create time each day to wipe off your dog’s face, especially the stained areas. Doing this often can help remove any trapped environmental allergens and prevent the build-up of tear stains (which can cause secondary infections).

You can clean their eyes using a clean cloth dampened with distilled water or doggy eye-cleaning wipes recommended by your vet. You can also consider adding a vet-approved tear stain removal solution to this cleaning routine.

  • Consider Filtered Water

Switching from tap water to filtered or distilled water may help reduce your dog’s recurring tear stains.

“Filtered, distilled, bottled water worked for my little guy. Might take a month for the tear-stained hair to grow out,” commented user @Lb147 in a Reddit discussion on clearing tear stains in dogs.

Tear Stains in Dogs FAQs

What foods cause tear stains in dogs?

Best dog food to prevent tear staining in Maltese

It’s advisable to speak with your vet about which food to switch to if your Maltese constantly has tear stains.

What ingredient in dog food causes tear stains?

Any ingredient in dog food, from chicken to beef, turkey, grain, and lamb, can cause tear stains if your dog is allergic to it.

Does chicken cause tear stains in dogs?

As noted earlier, your dog may develop tear stains if they are allergic to chicken.

Does turkey cause tear stains in dogs?

Not all dogs that consume turkey get tear stains. Instead, those allergic to turkey are more prone to tear stains.

Does filtered water prevent tear stains in dogs?

Switching your dog from tap water to filtered water can help reduce repeated tear staining.

Best product to prevent tear stains in dogs?

It’s best to consult your vet about what product to use to clear your dog’s tear stains.

Does beef cause tear stains in dogs?

Yes, beef can cause tear stains if your dog is allergic to it.

Does distilled water prevent tear stains in dogs?

Distilled or filtered water can help tackle your dog’s tear-staining problem.

How do probiotics help with tear staining in dogs?

Probiotics can help with tear staining in dogs by promoting a healthier gut microbiome, which can reduce the chance of tear stains caused by imbalances in the digestive system. Tear staining, often linked to a buildup of the dye molecule called porphyrin, can sometimes be exacerbated by poor digestion or diet. Adding probiotics to your dog’s regimen may help reduce the appearance of stains by improving their overall health from the inside out.

What’s the best way to get rid of tear stains in white dogs?

Probiotics can help with tear staining in dogs by promoting a healthier gut microbiome, which can reduce the chance of tear stains caused by imbalances in the digestive system. Tear staining, often linked to a buildup of the dye molecule called porphyrin, can sometimes be exacerbated by poor digestion or diet. Adding probiotics to your dog’s regimen may help reduce the appearance of stains by improving their overall health from the inside out.

How does baking soda help with tear stains in dogs?

Baking soda can help clean and lighten tear stains in dogs due to its mild abrasive and bleaching properties. To use it, mix a small amount of baking soda with water to form a paste, apply it gently to the stained area, and rinse thoroughly after a few minutes. Be careful not to get any into the dog’s eyes. Additionally, addressing underlying health conditions that contribute to tear staining, such as excessive tear production or skin irritation, is important.

Can apple cider vinegar reduce tear stains in dogs?

Yes, apple cider vinegar may help reduce tear stains in dogs by balancing the pH levels in their body. You can add a small amount (usually a teaspoon) of apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water to help reduce the appearance of tear stains. However, it’s essential to ensure that any underlying health condition causing the excessive tearing, such as infections or allergies, is addressed as well.

Is Desitin safe for treating tear stains in dogs?

Desitin, a zinc oxide-based diaper rash cream, has been suggested by some pet owners for treating tear stains in dogs. However, it’s essential to use it cautiously and ensure that it doesn’t come into contact with the dog’s eyes, as it can cause irritation. Applying a thin layer around the stained area may help protect the skin, but always consult with a vet before using products not specifically designed for dogs.

Can colloidal silver help with tear stains in dogs?

Colloidal silver may help reduce tear stains in dogs due to its antimicrobial properties, which can help prevent infections that may lead to excessive tearing. Some owners use colloidal silver as a topical solution to clean the stained area gently. However, it’s crucial to address the root cause of tear stains, whether it’s due to a health condition, diet, or environmental factors.

Can apple cider vinegar cause tear stains in dogs?

While apple cider vinegar is often used to help reduce tear stains by balancing the dog’s pH levels, excessive or improper use of it might lead to tear stains in some cases. For example, if the vinegar irritates the dog’s digestive or urinary systems, it could result in excessive tearing. Always introduce apple cider vinegar to your dog’s diet in small amounts and monitor for any adverse effects.

What health conditions can cause dogs to get tear stains?

Tear staining, also known as epiphora, can be caused by several health conditions in dogs, including eye infections, allergies, clogged tear ducts, or even dental problems. In some cases, tear staining may result from a buildup of porphyrin, a dye molecule in tears. If your dog suddenly develops tear stains, it’s important to have them checked by a vet to rule out any underlying health conditions.

How Long Do Shih Tzus Live? Everything You Should Know About the Shih Tzu’s Lifespan https://rockykanaka.com/how-long-do-shih-tzus-live-everything-you-should-know-about-the-shih-tzus-lifespan/ Fri, 07 Jun 2024 21:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=71790 Admired for their silky, flowing coats, adorable pushed-in faces, and glamorous appearance, it’s not hard to see why Shih Tzus turn heads wherever they go.

This playful, stubborn-at-times toy breed — whose name loosely translates to “Little Lion” in the Mandarin language — traces its origin to Tibet, Asia, where they were kept as companion dogs for Tibetan Monks and Chinese royalty. Shih Tzus were then imported to Europe and later found themselves in the United States when American soldiers stationed in European countries came back with them to the country.

Shih Tzu’s Lifespan

Shih Tzus are among the most popular toy breeds in America, thanks to their winning personalities. Their outgoing, friendly, gentle, and affectionate disposition makes them incredible family dogs who get along wonderfully with kids and other household pets.

On average, this fun-loving breed — nicknamed the Chrysanthemum dog because the way the hair on their face grows out with the nose at the center makes them resemble the Chrysanthemum flower — weighs anywhere between 9–16 pounds and reaches heights of up to 10.5 inches tall.

The ever-devoted Shih Tzu — believed to be a crossbreed between the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso — loves nothing more than being the center of attention and following their favorite human from room to room.

If you’re thinking of adding a Shih Tzu to your family, chances are, you also have thoughts about their average life expectancy. Well, read on as we explore all you need to know about the lifespan of a Shih Tzu, health factors that affect this breed’s longevity, and more.

Average Lifespan of a Shih Tzu

According to the American Kennel Club, the Shih Tzu’s lifespan, on average, ranges between 10–18 years. This is a pretty long lifespan, considering the fact that dogs, in general, are estimated to have an average life expectancy of 10–13 years.

The Shih Tzu’s small size has everything to do with their impressive longevity. Unlike medium and large dog breeds, small breeds like Shih Tzu’s do not age at a rapid rate, meaning their bodies don’t experience wear and tear at an earlier point in their lifetime.

Findings by WebMD show that 10 years for a small dog is equivalent to 56 human years, whereas 16 years equals 80 human years. So, if the question, “What is the Shih Tzu’s lifespan in human years?” has ever crossed your mind, we’re guessing you now have a rough idea of how long Shih Tzus live in human years. You’re so welcome!

It’s worth noting that a healthy Shih Tzu with a good quality of life can live longer than the average 10–18 years. You’d be surprised to learn that the oldest Shih Tzu on record was a pup from Florida named Smokey, who died at the age of 23.

Common Health Issues That Affect the Shih Tzu’s Lifespan

Like other breeds, Shih Tzus are susceptible to various health conditions that can negatively impact their lifespan. These health problems include:

1. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Classified as a brachycephalic breed, Shih Tzus are prone to developing Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). BOAS arises due to airway abnormalities in flat-faced dogs such as the Shih Tzu breed. This potentially deadly condition leads to frequent breathing difficulties. Shih Tzus with a severe case of BOAS may need surgery to live a healthier life.

2. Eye Abnormalities

One of the Shih Tzu’s distinct features is their big protruding eyes, which unfortunately puts them at risk of eye infections and various eye problems, including ocular proptosis, cataracts, corneal ulcers, dry eye, and progressive renal atrophy.

Shih Tzu’s Lifespan

3. Patellar Luxation

Shih Tzus are prone to Patellar Luxation, a hereditary condition characterized by the dislocation of the kneecap. Patellar Luxation — which causes serious orthopedic issues if left untreated — is associated with symptoms such as difficulty walking or jumping and limping.

4. Hip Dysplasia

While more prevalent among large dog breeds, hip dysplasia is also common in Shih Tzu dogs. It is characterized by defects in the hip joints and worsens in severity if not medically addressed.

5. Ear Infections

The floppy, long-haired nature of the Shih Tzu’s ears puts them at risk of severe fungal and bacterial ear infections. Recurrent ear infections can significantly lower your Shih Tzu’s quality of life and, ultimately, their lifespan.

Shih Tzu’s Lifespan

6. Dental Diseases

Due to their small mouths, Shih Tzus tend to have overcrowded teeth that make them highly prone to dental diseases. Without timely treatment, these diseases can become life-threatening.

7 Ways to Prolong Your Shih Tzu’s Lifespan

Like other Shih Tzu owners, you have great influence over how long your cherished pup lives. It’s possible for your Shih Tzu to stick around longer than you expect them to, particularly if you take the following tips into consideration:

  • Make regular vet visits a priority, not an option.
  • Be sure your Tzu feeds on healthy, well-balanced dog food.
  • Prioritize regular physical activity and mental stimulation to ensure your Shih Tzu maintains a healthy weight and happy life.
  • Prioritize your Shih Tzu’s dental hygiene and consult your vet on further actions to take to improve their oral health.
  • Talk to your vet about joint supplements that will help protect your Shih Tzu’s overall joint health.
  • Inspect and clean your Shih Tzu’s ears regularly, and consult your vet in case of any concerns.

The Shaved Shih Tzu: A Guide to Grooming, Maintenance, and Styling https://rockykanaka.com/the-shaved-shih-tzu-a-guide-to-grooming-maintenance-and-styling/ Wed, 28 Jun 2023 21:02:05 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=30890 Grooming plays a vital role in keeping our beloved Shih Tzus healthy, comfortable, and stylish. While the Shih Tzu breed is known for its luxurious, flowing coat, there are instances where a shaved look becomes necessary or preferred. Whether it’s to manage mats, provide relief from hot weather, or create a unique style, understanding the process of shaving a Shih Tzu is essential for every owner. In this article, we will delve into the world of the shaved Shih Tzu, providing insights into grooming techniques, maintenance tips, and the considerations involved in achieving the perfect look.

The Shaved Shih Tzu

Here are the step-by-step instructions for shaving down a matted Shih Tzu dog:

Determine the level of matting and identify areas that need to be shaved.

2. Prepare the tools

Use your hands to guide and support the dog throughout the process. Hold the head still when necessary and move ears out of the way for better access.

10. Switch to a 10 blade for finer grooming

Use a 10 blade for more delicate areas like the face, making precise cuts to thin out mats and blend the hair.

11. Brush and separate mats

Remember to prioritize the dog’s well-being and comfort throughout the entire process. Take breaks when necessary and handle the dog with care to ensure a positive grooming experience.

Shaved Shih Tzu Face

When it comes to grooming a Shih Tzu, certain areas require special attention, including the face, tail, and ears. These areas can be groomed to enhance the overall appearance of a shaved Shih Tzu. The shaved Shih Tzu face, for example, can be carefully scissored and shaped to create a clean, refined look. Trimming the hair around the eyes and muzzle can help improve visibility and maintain a neat appearance. It’s important to be cautious and gentle when working around sensitive areas, ensuring the dog’s comfort throughout the process.

Shaved Shih Tzu Tail

The tail is another area where grooming can make a significant difference in a shaved Shih Tzu’s appearance. Trimming the tail hair to a suitable length can help achieve a balanced look while maintaining the breed’s distinctive silhouette. A well-groomed tail can be shaped to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the dog. Care should be taken to avoid cutting the tail too short or causing any discomfort to the Shih Tzu.

Shaved Shih Tzu Ears

Shih Tzu ears require special attention during grooming, especially when the dog is shaved. Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial to prevent ear infections and ensure the dog’s comfort. When grooming a shaved Shih Tzu’s ears, it’s essential to remove excess hair from the ear canal carefully. This helps improve airflow and reduces the risk of moisture buildup and bacterial growth. Consulting with a professional groomer or veterinarian can provide valuable guidance on proper ear care techniques and products to use.

Should a Shih Tzu be shaved?

Shaving a Shih Tzu is not generally recommended. Shih Tzus have a double coat, which means they have a soft, fluffy undercoat and a coarser topcoat. The undercoat helps to insulate them from both heat and cold, while the topcoat helps to protect them from the sun and dirt. If you shave a Shih Tzu, you will be removing both of these layers of protection, which can leave them vulnerable to the elements.

How long does it take for a Shih Tzu hair to grow back after shaving?

The amount of time it takes for a Shih Tzu’s hair to grow back after shaving can vary depending on the individual dog. However, it typically takes about 6-8 months for the hair to fully grow back.

How short can you shave a Shih Tzu?

It is not recommended to shave a Shih Tzu’s hair too short. The minimum length that you should shave a Shih Tzu’s hair is around 1 inch. Shaving the hair too short can damage the undercoat and make it difficult for the hair to grow back properly.

Should I cut my Shih Tzu hair?

Whether or not you should cut your Shih Tzu’s hair depends on a few factors, including your dog’s lifestyle, activity level, and coat type. If your dog is active and spends a lot of time outdoors, you may want to keep their hair short to help them stay cool. If your dog is more laid-back and spends most of their time indoors, you may want to keep their hair long to help protect them from the cold. Ultimately, the best way to decide is to talk to your veterinarian or a professional groomer.

Grooming a Shih Tzu involves careful consideration of the breed’s coat, individual needs, and personal preferences. While a shaved Shih Tzu may differ from the traditional long-haired appearance, it can provide practicality, comfort, and even a touch of unique style. By following proper grooming techniques, consulting with professionals, and staying informed about the specific needs of your Shih Tzu, you can maintain a well-groomed and happy companion. Embrace the versatility of the shaved Shih Tzu and create a grooming routine that suits both you and your furry friend, ensuring a lifetime of good health and fabulous style.
