So they threw her a “Bark Mitzvah,” a joyful, treat-filled celebration of their little guy’s big milestone. The love-filled party, complete with wagging tails and bagels, quickly went viral after Nicolette shared it on TikTok, with over 360K views and more than 88,000 likes. (Watch Video Below)

How Frankie’s “Bark Mitzvah” Came to Life

In an interview with People, Nicolette shared how the grand birthday party for Frankie came to be. They picked a date close to Frankie’s birthday, September 1, 2025, and invited friends to a backyard brunch celebration.

Nicolette and Nina even planned a loose “program,” complete with a dog-themed interpretation of the week’s Torah portion. To tie it all together, they chose a theme inspired by New York’s iconic Jewish delis: Frankie’s Delicatessen & Appetizing, paying tribute to local favorites like Russ & Daughters.

A deli-style logo and an adorable portrait of Frankie, designed by Nicolette, adorned the decorations and party favors. Meanwhile, the guests enjoyed fresh bagels, schmear, pastries, and fruit, all while celebrating the little pug of honor.

Their friend Joanna led a short ceremony with Frankie front and center, ending in a joyful hora dance. In the words of Nicolette, “It ended up being the perfect balance of heartfelt cultural nods and lighthearted fun, and equal parts reverence and ridiculousness.”

A Celebration Fit for a Pug Queen

Frankie’s big day didn’t end there. She was lifted in her chair like the true queen she is, surrounded by laughter, cheers, and shouts of “mazel tov” that echoed through the backyard. The love and joy were infectious, and it was clear that Frankie adored every moment of being the star of the show.

Nicolette and Nina had been talking with their friends about how important it is to create little moments of joy, so they decided to lean all the way in. From the “Frankie’s Delicatessen & Appetizing” theme to the custom gift bags filled with pug-themed merch and black-and-white cookies, every detail reflected their love and humor.

Why Not a Bark Mitzvah For Your Dog?

Frankie’s mom, Nicolette, encourages other dog owners like you to consider hosting their own “Bark Mitzvahs” or similar celebrations, because according to her, any gathering that brings joy and honors the pets we love is something everyone could use more of.

So, are you now convinced of throwing a Bark Mitzvah for your own furry friend? If yes, then here’s how you can do it:

  • To start, pick a venue that fits your guest list. Backyards, dog-friendly parks, daycare centers, or pet-friendly hotels all work well. If outdoors, make sure there are plenty of poop bags for potty breaks.
  • Decorations can include banners, bandanas, and even tiny Yarmulkes for the pups, and Etsy is a treasure trove for these.
  • Invitations should go out to close friends, family, and other beloved pets.
  • Food is a highlight for both humans and dogs: dog-friendly cakes and treats from bakeries like The Dog Bakery, and snacks for people.
  • Activities like tug ropes, frisbees, and games for human guests keep everyone entertained.
  • A small ceremony or blessing, followed by brunch and dessert, rounds out the celebration.
  • Most importantly, capture photos and savor the memories — it’s a day your dog will never forget!

Abandoned Pug Found Wrapped in a Dirty T-Shirt, Then A Hero Found Her & Everything Changed https://rockykanaka.com/abandoned-pug-found-wrapped-in-a-dirty-t-shirt-then-a-hero-found-her-everything-changed/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=119499 Not many dogs go on to live happy lives after being abandoned by their owners. But a Pug called Charlene gets to defy that norm as her life turned around for the better after she was dumped by the people she once considered family. (Watch Video Above)

Charlene was not only heartlessly abandoned but was also found tied up and mistreated. Her previous owner apparently used a dirty T-shirt to tie up around her body to cover hot spots to prevent infection. She was undoubtedly in rough shape, but now she has a hope for a much better future after the intervention of Wags and Walks Rescue

Rescue That Changed Life

When Wags & Walks found the 1-year-old Pug, they didn’t hesitate to take her in and quickly fell in love, naming her Charlene. As they gently removed the dirty T-shirt wrapped around her, they uncovered painful wounds that needed immediate medical care.

Charlene was made a top priority. The team gave her a much-needed bath, treated her injuries, and made sure she felt safe and comforted.

Once she was feeling a little better, they found her a loving foster home where she could finally rest, decompress, and begin the healing process—both inside and out.

”It’s hard to imagine how anyone could abandon a dog like Charlene, but it’s even more powerful to see how quickly love can change a life. Her story is a beautiful reminder that every dog deserves a second chance,” states Rocky Kanaka, a pet rescue advocate.

Dog Wound Care

Seeing Charlene’s wounds might have you wondering how to care for your own dog’s injuries. Here are some expert tips from Dr. Rhiannon Koehler on how to safely clean and treat your dog’s wounds at home.

Assessing the Injury

First, assess the severity of the injury. If it’s a minor cut or scrape, you can proceed with the steps below. However, if the wound is more serious, it’s best to seek veterinary attention right away.

Preparing for Dog Wound Care

  • Put on disposable gloves to keep your hands clean and protect your pet from any contaminants on your hands.
  • Use clippers or scissors to carefully clip the fur away from the area around the wound. Make sure to wipe away any loose hair that gets in the wound while cleaning.

Cleaning the Wound

  • Start by washing the wound with water to clear away dirt and debris.
  • Use wound spray and wound wipes to finish cleaning the wound.

Controlling Bleeding and Promoting Healing

  • If your dog has a minor cut or torn nail, apply styptic powder to help stop the bleeding.
  • Apply a small amount of wound ointment, such as medical-grade honey ointment with antibacterial properties or inflammation relief creams with hydrocortisone, to help promote healing.

Dressing the Wound

  • For wounds on the neck, chest, or abdomen, use an adhesive wound dressing. You can use medical tape to secure the dressing if it doesn’t stick well.
  • For wounds on the leg or tail that require bandaging, consider seeking veterinary attention to avoid wrapping too tightly.

Preventing Licking and Biting

If the wound is in an area your dog can lick or bite, use a recovery cone to prevent further irritation.

Aftercare

  • For bandaged wounds, change the bandage and clean the wound daily for the first three days, then every two to three days. Monitor for signs of infection.
  • For unbandaged wounds, follow the same cleaning schedule. If you notice signs of infection or poor healing, seek veterinary attention.

Monitoring Bandaged Leg Wounds

If your dog has a bandage on their leg, watch for signs that the bandage is too tight, such as:

  • Swelling beneath the bandage
  • Increased space between the toes due to swelling
  • Discoloration or purplish tint to the skin
  • Dog chewing or licking at the bandage or lower limb
  • Limping or lameness

If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian.

Shelter Pug Refused to Move—Until He Saw a Familiar Face! https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-83-cupid/ Tue, 25 Feb 2025 01:33:34 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=104758 Cupid’s story begins on Valentine’s Day when he was found wandering as a stray and brought to the shelter. The family that found him had kept him for a week, likely debating whether to keep him, before realizing they couldn’t. He had a collar but no tags, no microchip—so close to being identified, yet still lost.

At the shelter, Cupid shut down. He wasn’t the typical goofy, food-motivated pug. Instead, he curled up, visibly trembling, his big, expressive eyes filled with fear. It’s not uncommon for dogs to become overwhelmed in the shelter environment, but seeing a small dog like Cupid completely withdraw was heartbreaking.

Respecting the Small But Mighty

When I met Cupid, I knew we had to go slow. Many people instinctively scoop up small dogs in distress, thinking comfort will calm them, but that doesn’t always work. “No matter the size of the dog, I try to give them the same respect,” I told Kelly, who was with me that day. “If you’ve ever felt pushed around or ignored, you know how small dogs in shelters feel.”

Sitting with dogs 83: Cupid

Kelly nodded, watching Cupid closely. “You know, we don’t really know much about pugs, but when you see a whole bunch of them together, they’re like tiny comedians. It’s sad to see one so unsure of himself.”

The Power of a Treat (and a Little Patience)

The first step in breaking through to Cupid? Treats. Food can help fearful dogs shift focus away from their anxiety.

I started by placing a treat near him, not forcing interaction. At first, he hesitated, but eventually, he sniffed at it and took a tentative bite. That tiny movement forward was a victory.

One training technique I use in shelters is the push-pull method—encouraging small movements forward while giving the dog a chance to retreat. If a dog like Cupid hesitates to take a treat, I offer it, pull it slightly away, then let him come forward on his terms. “Bravery isn’t something that just happens,” I explained to Kelly. “It’s a choice, and dogs have to take those steps themselves. We just have to create an environment where they feel safe enough to try.”

Sitting with dogs 83: Cupid

One of my favorite shelter training techniques is the open-hand approach. Instead of offering a treat between fingers, which can feel intimidating, I place it in my open palm. Nervous dogs like Cupid, who are wary of human hands, find this less threatening. “It’s all about making them feel in control of their choices,” I told Kelly. “It’s amazing how a simple change in body language can change their trust levels.”

Pug Problems: Why So Many End Up in Shelters

Pugs are one of the most recognizable and adored dog breeds, but they come with a long list of health concerns. Breathing issues, hip dysplasia, spinal problems—these are just some of the challenges pugs face due to breeding practices. Backyard breeders make this worse by prioritizing appearance over health.

Many people adopt pugs without fully understanding their needs, leading to a high number of pugs in shelters and breed-specific rescues. Cupid’s situation wasn’t unique, but it was still heartbreaking. Despite being a purebred pug, he was just another scared shelter dog needing a second chance.

The Scoop Moment

Sitting with dogs 83: Cupid

After spending time earning Cupid’s trust, I knew it was time for the real test—the scoop. Holding a fearful dog can be tricky. If they’ve had bad experiences, being picked up can trigger panic. But Cupid? He melted into me like a squishy little marshmallow. It was the kind of scoop that makes all the tough days in rescue worth it.

A Surprise Ending—The Adoption That Almost Never Happens

Cupid’s journey took an incredible turn that day. A family arrived at the shelter to meet him—something that almost never happens in real-time. And here’s the twist: Cupid already knew them!

The family had previously adopted another dog, Benny, who had been kenneled right next to Cupid. The moment Cupid saw Benny, his entire demeanor changed. His tail wagged, his body relaxed—he knew he was safe.

Cupid’s new dad, B, had been looking for a companion after losing his previous dog. Seeing Cupid recognize Benny was all the confirmation he needed. “It’s like he knew this was his moment,” Kelly said. “He wasn’t just getting adopted—he was going home.”

Lessons from Cupid’s Story

Sitting with dogs 83: Cupid

Cupid’s journey is a reminder that every dog, no matter how small, deserves patience and respect. It’s also proof that even when a dog seems shut down, the right approach—gentle encouragement, food motivation, and time—can make all the difference.

If you take one thing away from Cupid’s story, let it be this: microchip your pets, put a tag on their collar, and don’t assume that just because a dog is small or purebred, they’ll have an easy road to adoption. And if you’re ever thinking about adopting, maybe—just maybe—a little pug with big eyes will be waiting for you.

Cupid’s transformation reminds me why I do this work. A dog can go from trembling in the back of a kennel to cuddling in a warm home in just a matter of time—if given the chance. And if you ever meet a scared little dog like Cupid, remember: treats, patience, and a little scoop can change their world. Cupid’s arrow found its mark, and now he’s home. Here’s to hoping every shelter dog gets their own happy ending.

Next Steps

If Cupid’s story touched your heart, consider checking out your local shelters. Pugs, just like every other breed, end up in need of homes all the time. And if you can’t adopt, there are plenty of ways to help—donations, volunteering, or even just sharing these stories to help dogs find their families.

Pugs Are Getting a Major Upgrade—Could the Retro Pug Be the Future of the Breed? https://rockykanaka.com/could-the-retro-pug-replace-the-flat-faced-pug/ Tue, 04 Feb 2025 18:57:16 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=29461 You’ve probably heard that Pugs have a litany of health issues related to their physiology. Short snouts cause breathing problems, thick stocky bodies are hard on joints, and tightly curled tails can cause back problems. Despite being adorable and loved worldwide, Pugs have slowly started to go out of style due to health and welfare concerns for the breed.

Enter the Retro Pug. Created as an answer and solution to the problem of poor Pug health, the Retro Pug is technically a mixed-breed dog whose genetics have been specifically selected to “breed out” Pug-specific issues. For example, the Retro Pug has deeper-set eyes than the Pug, which helps to reduce potential vision problems and risk of injury.

If you’ve ever wanted a Pug, but have hesitated because of the breed’s health problems, the Retro Pug could be your perfect pup! In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about this “new” breed and get to know a few Retro Pugs in the process.

Meet 5 Retro Pugs

If you were walking down the street and saw a Retro Pug, you might not realize you aren’t looking at a standard traditional Pug. The “old fashioned” Retro Pug is just different enough from the Pug to eliminate extreme physical traits, like the super-squashed nose, the short stocky legs, and the tightly curled tail.

Let’s take a peek at five examples of Retro Pugs to give you an idea of what this new breed variety looks like.

1. Bruno

Zula is a black Retro Pug with an expressive pair of ears that Zula’s parents call “bat wings.” Zula is an energetic dog and likes to spend plenty of time doing things like agility to get the zoomies out!

What’s the Difference Between a Pug and a Retro Pug?

Retro Pugs look almost exactly like traditional Pugs—so much so that it can be hard to tell the difference! Let’s take a quick look at a side-by-side comparison of the Retro Pug vs. Pug. The Retro Pug is on the left and the traditional Pug is on the right.

retro pug
retro pug

Sources: @Ahri_The_Pug_x3 and @Ange_Plus_4

Retro Pugs have longer legs, leaner bodies, longer faces, larger ears, deeper-set eyes, and more loosely curled tails than traditional Pugs. In fact, Retro Pugs look more similar to what Pugs once looked like before selective breeding produced the extreme Pug look we’re used to today. But breeders didn’t exactly go back in time to create the Retro Pug.

Retro Pugs are technically a mixed breed whose genetics combine traditional Pug with a “donor breed,” Most commonly, Retro Pugs are a combination of Pug and either Jack Russel Terrier or Parson Russell Terrier. Other acceptable donor breeds include Miniature Pinscher and Danish/Swedish Farm Dogs. Generally, Retro Pugs are approximately 75% Pug and 25% donor breed.

Why Were Retro Pugs Created?

But, why cross purebred dogs in the first place? In the case of the Retro Pug, it all boils down to health.

“[Donor breeds] are generally very healthy and have a low inbreeding coefficient,” says the International Retro Pug Club (IRPC) on its website. “[Donor breeds] can give the Pug anatomical characteristics that it lacks, such as more slenderness, a firmer connective tissue, embedded eyes, longer nose and good nostrils and a longer back and neck as well as greatly improved genetics.”

By introducing new genetics into Pug bloodlines, Retro Pug breeders are working towards creating a healthier, happier, longer-lived Pug. Modern Pugs are known to experience a host of health risks, and the breed as a whole has become less healthy in the past few decades. Despite breeders following strict genetic and health testing guidelines for their breeding pairs, the breed standard for Pugs is such that these dogs have health issues almost by necessity.

Retro Pugs were developed in an effort to “return” the Pug breed to its original look, and reduce the vast number of health issues associated with the breed. By introducing Jack Russell Terrier to Pug genetics, breeders have managed to breed out the “extreme” traits of the Pug that are to blame for their health problems.

Retro Pug Basic Info

Source: Animals Around The Globe

First developed in Europe, the Retro Pug is especially popular in places like Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland. The International Retro Pug Club is the first organization to formally support breeding Retro Pugs and has helped to put this new breed on the map. Because Retro Pugs are a mix of Pug and a “donor breed”—most commonly Jack Russel or Parson Russell Terrier—they are a little different from regular Pugs.

Retro Pug Temperament

Retro Pugs are social, outgoing, and goofy like their Pug parents. The addition of terrier to their bloodlines makes these pups energetic, playful, and strong-willed

Retro Pug Size

Retro Pugs are slightly taller than regular Pugs, standing at around 12–16 inches tall. They may also be slightly heavier than regular Pugs, weighing between 15–25 pounds, though their weight distribution is often more even than the standard Pug.

Retro Pug Health

Retro Pugs are fairly healthy compared to regular Pugs, but they do still have a few health concerns to be aware of:

  • Dental problems
  • Skin allergies
  • Food and environmental allergies
  • Epilepsy
  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Cancer

Where To Find Retro Pug Breeders

The most well-established Retro Pug breeders are in Europe and there is a distinct lack of breeders in the U.S. If you live outside of Europe and want a Retro Pug of your own, we recommend searching for other Retro Pug owners to ask for their recommendations.

You also have the option to adopt a Pug or Pug mix! Try visiting a local shelter or searching for breed-specific rescues in your area.

Retro Pug FAQ

Don’t click away just yet! We’ve got more Retro Pug facts for you to take a look at.

Are Retro Pugs healthy compared to Pugs?

Yes. For the most part, Retro Pugs have fewer health issues than Pugs thanks to their less extreme physical appearance. Retro Pugs are less likely to develop the following problems as compared to standard Pugs.

-Eye and vision problems
-Breathing and respiratory issues
-Back problems
-Skin infections
-Joint issues

What is a Retro Pug mixed with?

Retro Pugs are usually a mix of Pug and either Jack Russell or Parson Russell Terrier.

What is a Retro Pug, and how is it different from a regular Pug?

A Retro Pug is a crossbreed between a Pug and a Jack Russell Terrier (or sometimes a Beagle) designed to resemble old-fashioned Pugs with a longer snout. Unlike flat-faced traditional Pugs, Retro Pugs tend to have fewer respiratory problems and improved overall health while still maintaining the playful personality of the Pug breed.

Why were Retro Pugs created?

The Retro Pug breed was developed to address the common health issues seen in flat-faced purebred Pugs, particularly breathing difficulties. By introducing genes from Jack Russell Terriers or Beagles, breeders aimed to create a healthier, more energetic dog with the appearance of an old-fashioned Pug.

What is the difference between a Retro Pug vs. Pug?

A Retro Pug has a longer snout, making it less prone to breathing issues than a traditional Pug. It also tends to be more energetic due to the influence of the Jack Russell Terrier. In contrast, a regular Pug is a purebred dog recognized by major kennel clubs, while Retro Pugs are a hybrid breed.

Are Retro Pugs healthier than regular Pugs?

Yes, Retro Pugs generally have fewer health problems than traditional Pugs, especially regarding breathing difficulties and heat sensitivity. However, they can still inherit potential health concerns from either parent breed, such as separation anxiety or joint issues.

How long do Retro Pugs live?

Due to their improved overall health, Retro Pugs often have a longer lifespan than regular Pugs, typically living up to 16 years with proper care.

Where can I find Retro Pugs for sale?

Since Retro Pugs are not a recognized purebred dog breed, they are not commonly available from kennel club-registered breeders. Instead, Retro Pug breeders specialize in retro pug breeding, and you can often find Retro Pug puppies through reputable hybrid dog breeders. Always research to ensure ethical breeding practices.

What is a German Retro Pug?

A German Retro Pug is a variation of the Retro Pug that originated in Germany, focusing on creating a healthier alternative to the traditional Pug. These dogs are carefully bred to have a long snout while still maintaining the small dog size and affectionate temperament of a Pug.

Do Retro Pugs come in different colors?

Yes! Retro Pugs can inherit coat colors from both parents, meaning they come in classic Pug colors like fawn and black. Some breeders specifically breed black Retro Pugs, which have a sleek black coat instead of the more common fawn coloration.

What is a Retro Mops, and how is it different from a Retro Pug?

“Mops” is the German word for Pug, so a Retro Mops is essentially a Retro Pug from Germany. The term Retro Mops vs. Pug usually refers to the distinction between these long snout Retro Pugs and the flat-faced traditional Pug.

Do Retro Pugs make good pets?

Yes! Retro Pugs are affectionate, social, and playful dogs. They combine the friendly, loving nature of a Pug with the energetic, intelligent traits of a Jack Russell Terrier. However, they can experience separation anxiety, so they do best in homes where they get plenty of attention.

Anemia in Dogs

Understanding Anemia in Dogs: A Hidden Threat

Anemia in dogs isn’t a disease in itself; it’s a silent warning signal that something more serious could be happening within your pet’s body. When Dr. Lauren James encountered a lethargic Golden Retriever named Max in her practice, she quickly identified telltale signs: pale gums and a sluggish pulse. These symptoms led her to suspect anemia, a condition that reduces red blood cell (RBC) count and hampers oxygen flow to tissues, leaving dogs weak and vulnerable.

Veterinarians at VCA Animal Hospitals define anemia as a reduced number of circulating red blood cells or hemoglobin, crucial for oxygen transport. In dogs, RBCs originate in the bone marrow, then circulate in the bloodstream for about three months. As they age, they’re replaced with fresh cells. But when this delicate cycle is disrupted, anemia can emerge. Anemia can stem from three main issues: the decreased production of RBCs, excessive destruction of cells, or chronic blood loss.

Dr. James explains that anemia manifests in two types, each with unique challenges. Regenerative anemia is when the bone marrow detects the deficiency and ramps up RBC production in response. However, with nonregenerative anemia, the bone marrow falters, unable to produce the necessary RBCs. This failure often points to serious health issues such as kidney disease or bone marrow disorders.

Symptoms of Anemia in Dogs

When anemia strikes suddenly, it’s considered acute—and it can be life-threatening. Dr. Steven Marks recalls a case where a German Shepherd came in after a run-in with a sharp object. The dog was in shock, having lost a substantial amount of blood internally. This kind of acute anemia can cause rapid heart rate, pale gums, and dangerously low blood pressure, sometimes signaling life-threatening conditions like internal bleeding from ruptured tumors or severe injuries.

Chronic anemia, in contrast, is a slow burn. Dogs with chronic anemia may show subtle symptoms that owners might overlook: gradual lethargy, loss of appetite, and sometimes jaundice, a yellowish tint in the eyes and gums. Over time, their bodies try to adapt, but signs like an enlarged spleen, heart murmurs, and persistent weakness often alert vets to the underlying struggle. For pets with chronic anemia, managing the root cause is essential to prevent further RBC loss.

Anemia can mask itself as mild fatigue or occasional paleness, making regular vet check-ups vital. “It’s one of those conditions where early detection makes all the difference,” Dr. James emphasizes. With timely diagnosis and treatment, dogs can often return to their playful selves, but when overlooked, anemia can silently take a toll on their quality of life.

Causes of Anemia in Dogs

Anemia in dogs can result from various underlying diseases. For instance, a dog parent on Reddit, u/jengricas, shared that his dog was diagnosed with “severe anemia due to kidney failure.” Let’s take a look at various diseases that can lead to anemia:

Cheeky
Credit: Central Texas Dachshund Rescue

1. Diseases Causing Blood Loss Anemia

These conditions lead to excessive bleeding, reducing number of red blood cells:

  • Trauma or injury to blood vessels or internal organs
  • Heavy infestations of blood-sucking parasites (fleas, ticks, hookworms)
  • Bleeding tumors (benign or malignant) in the intestinal tract, kidneys, urinary bladder, and spleen
  • Coagulopathies (bleeding disorders)

2. Diseases Causing Hemolysis Anemia (Destruction of Red Blood Cells)

The given conditions lead to the premature breakdown of red blood cells:

  • Autoimmune diseases, especially immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in dogs (IMHA or AIHA)
  • Blood parasites (Babesia)
  • Toxins and chemicals like zinc, rat poisons, onions, and garlic
  • Cancer
  • Mechanical fragmentation like heartworm disease, splenic torsion, and heart disease

3. Diseases Causing Bone Marrow Suppression Anemia

The following conditions impair the production of red blood cells:

  • Severe or chronic diseases like Ehrlichia, chronic kidney disease, and chronic liver disease
  • Poor nutrition or nutritional imbalances
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Toxins and chemicals:
  • Estrogen-based drugs
  • Lead
  • Certain chemotherapy drugs
  • Rarely, antibiotics (chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfadiazine)
  • Cancer

Identifying the underlying cause of anemia is crucial for effective treatment and management. Consult your veterinarian if you suspect your dog is showing signs of anemia.

Diagnosing Anemia in Dogs

Veterinarians use a combination of physical examination, medical history, and diagnostic tests to confirm anemia in dogs.

The diagnostic process for anemia in dogs starts with a physical examination and review of medical history. Veterinarians look for signs like pale gums, bruising, and abdominal tumors, and consider chronic illnesses or recent traumas that may have contributed to anemia’s development. This initial assessment provides valuable insights into potential underlying causes.

Once the initial assessment is complete, veterinarians utilize various diagnostic tests to confirm anemia and determine its underlying cause. These tests include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): Blood test evaluating multiple RBC factors, guiding treatment planning.
  • PCV/TS (Packed Cell Volume/Total Solids): Quickly assesses RBC levels.
  • Reticulocyte Count: Identifies regenerative response through increased young RBCs.
  • Biochemistry and Urinalysis: Assesses organ function and underlying causes.
  • Slide Agglutination Test: Detects abnormal RBC clumping in Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA).
  • Cytology/Blood Smear: Microscopic evaluation of RBCs for cause and bone marrow response.
  • Bone Marrow Biopsy: Examines bone marrow for cancer, regeneration, or infections.
 Anemia in Dogs

To determine the underlying cause of anemia, additional testing may be required. This includes imaging studies (radiographs/ultrasound) to detect bleeding tumors, serology tests for infectious agents, fecal tests for gastrointestinal parasites, coagulation profiles for bleeding disorders, and endocrine testing for hormonal imbalances.

Organ function tests monitor kidney and liver function, while biopsies examine tissue samples for cancer diagnosis. These supplementary tests help veterinarians identify the root cause of anemia, enabling targeted treatment and effective management.

Treatment of Canine Anemia

The primary objective in managing canine anemia is to address the underlying cause. Treatment strategies vary depending on the disease’s chronicity, severity, and underlying cause.

Surgical interventions are necessary in cases where bleeding masses or traumatic wounds are present. Surgery helps remove the source of bleeding, stabilizing the dog’s condition. Certain procedures may include removing bleeding masses or repairing traumatic wounds.

In addition, pharmacological therapies target specific underlying causes. The vet can prescribe Vitamin K to counteract rodenticide poisoning, antiparasitics to eliminate internal parasites, and antibiotics to combat tick-borne or infectious agents. Additionally, steroids and immunosuppressants are utilized to manage autoimmune diseases that contribute to anemia, helping to regulate the immune system’s response and alleviate symptoms.

For severe cases of anemia, transfusion therapy is necessary. Blood products such as whole blood packed red blood cells, and plasma help replenish vital components.

A Reddit user, u/MangoRiviera, describes the treatment given to their senior black Lab having nonregenerative anemia, “My vet is giving him an emergency blood transfusion tomorrow, he has given him some medication: antibiotics in case it is an infection/parasite and steroid ‘Prednisolone’ in case it is his immune system attacking itself.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How to treat anemia in dogs at home?

If you want to treat anemia in dogs naturally, you should know that anemia cannot be fully treated without treating the underlying causes. But you can add iron-rich foods to your dog’s diet to support the treatment and boost the recovery. According to Friendly Animal Clinic, consider adding canned sardines, raw organic egg yolks, green vegetables, and beef liver to their regular meals. Additionally, Vitamin C enhances iron absorption; consult with your veterinarian for the optimal dosage (500-2000mg/day, depending on size).

What kind of cancer causes anemia in dogs?

As per BetterVet, anemia in dogs can be triggered by various types of cancer, including leukemia, as well as cancers affecting the spleen, liver, and kidneys.

What is autoimmune hemolytic anemia in dogs?

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in dogs occurs when their immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys red blood cells. This can be triggered by tumors, infections, medications, or vaccinations. Symptoms include jaundice, fever, and an enlarged spleen, with varying severity from mild to sudden crisis.

Is anemia life-threatening for dogs?

Rapid loss of more than a third of blood volume can lead to sudden anemia, causing severe shock and potentially fatal consequences if prompt replacement of blood or fluids is not administered.

Fastest Pug Alive? Sprinter Gabby Thomas Claims Her Rescue Dog Rico Outran the Competition at the Olympics https://rockykanaka.com/fastest-pug-alive-sprinter-gabby-thomas-claims-her-rescue-dog-rico-outran-the-competition-at-the-olympics/ Thu, 08 Aug 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=76702 The 2024 Paris Olympics provided a stage for American track and field star Gabby Thomas to shine, and she did not disappoint. The 27-year-old sprinter won the gold medal in the 200-meter event, cementing her status as one of the fastest athletes in the world.

Thomas’ stunning performance was made even more remarkable by the fact that she shares her life with a very special canine companion – her rescue Pug, Rico. While Pugs are not typically known for their speed, Thomas claims Rico is the exception to the rule.

“Rico is probably the fastest Pug in the country. I’m gonna go ahead and claim it,” Thomas said with a laugh. “Pugs don’t run, but my Pug does.”

During Thomas’ rigorous training for the Olympics, Rico would often join her on the track, sprinting alongside his athletic owner. “He genuinely enjoys running with me,” Thomas explained. “Rico is not like other Pugs – he’s a real athlete in his own right.”

Thomas’ remarkable achievement in Paris, combined with the support and enthusiasm of her four-legged friend, is sure to make both her and Rico the pride of the United States. The remarkable duo have proven that with enough heart and determination, even a Pug can chase Olympic dreams.

Rico Runs Faster Than Gold-Medalist Dog Mom

Rico is not only a Pug who sprints, but Gabby has admitted that he runs faster than she does. After winning the Gold Medal, it is safe to say that Gabby Thomas is currently one of the fastest women in the country. Not many people can claim to outrun her, but surprisingly, her Pug, a breed known for its laziness, can.

This makes one wonder, how fast do Pugs run? The Pug owner says that Rico has longer legs, which might be a factor in making Rico such an excellent runner despite being a Pug.

Rico and his Gold-Medalist mom share a special bond, which Nulo Pet Food highlighted in their “Fuel Incredible” campaign. This campaign showcased the “symbiotic relationship between the wellness of athletes and their pets,” as Pet Age reports. Additionally, it aimed to make pet parents understand the importance of the health and nutrition of their pets and how it allows their furry animals to be a proactive part of their lives.

This Pug’s story has certainly raised a big question, are Pugs very active? Let’s explore this.

Are Pugs Active Dogs?

When people think of Pugs, they generally think of them as “couch potatoes.” No one really wonders, “Are Pugs lazy or active?” because it has become a universally known fact that they are one of the laziest breeds.

However, Rico’s story urges me to dive deeper into the activity levels of the Pug breed. A Reddit owner, @Hot_Wolverine8301, also owns an active pug. They say, “My pug is very fit, according to his trainer and vet. They’ve mentioned that he’s the healthiest pug they’ve seen. He’s 3 years old, 18 lbs, and extremely active.”

Sprinter Gabby Thomas Claims Her Rescue Dog Rico Outran the Competition at the Olympics

In response to this, other Pug owners shared their own experiences. A pet parent of two Pugs, @MutedBrilliant1593, wrote, “My Brutus is large, lean, and toned naturally. He’s pretty much indestructible. His brother Nibbler, however, is a fat potato with short toothpick legs that gets winded on normal walks if it’s even slightly warm out. Pugs vary.”

How Active Are Pugs?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), “Given the opportunity, a Pug will happily spend much of the day snuggling on the sofa, which, combined with the breed’s fondness for eating, makes obesity a real possibility. But the Pug is playful, sturdy, and lively, too.” So, the AKC doesn’t describe Pugs as a lethargic dog and instead has medium energy levels.

From the accounts of Pug parents and the AKC, it is evident that the stereotype that Pugs are lazy dogs is not accurate. They are, in fact, playful and lively dogs. Why do then some Pugs are so lazy?

As AKC has described, Pugs like to eat a lot, which can make them obese. Thus, obesity seems to be a major cause of making Pugs inactive. Moreover, Pugs are renowned for their love of sleep, often clocking in around 14 hours a day.

However, they adore human companionship and will happily accompany you on walks, regardless of the weather. Beneath their calm exterior lies a curious and playful spirit. When not snoozing, Pugs are often exploring their surroundings, seeking out new adventures and mischief.

Therefore, although most Pugs are not highly energetic dogs, they are not inherently lazy too. Dogs, like humans, have individual differences due to genetics or lifestyle. So, while some Pugs are muscly and pretty active, others are chubby and prefer sleeping all day.

How Did Pugs Get Their Name?

The name “pug” is believed to have derived from the Latin word “pugnus,” which means fist. This etymology suggests that the name was chosen because the pug’s face resembles a clenched fist. Another theory is that the breed’s name comes from the marmoset monkeys, which were also called “pug monkeys” and were popular pets during the time pugs became popular in Europe. These monkeys, like the dogs, had similarly expressive faces, which might have contributed to the shared name.

Senior Pug Was So Medically Complex, The Shelter Couldn’t Tell If It Was a Boy or Girl https://rockykanaka.com/this-senior-pug-was-so-medically-complex-the-shelter-couldnt-determine-if-it-was-a-boy-or-girl/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 17:46:35 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=61901 Christy Solko of Surprise, Arizona was scrolling through Nextdoor when she saw a post from a dog rescue advocate with an urgent plea for help. The county animal shelter had a 72-hour hold on an 8-year-old stray Pug who had been found wandering the streets of Phoenix, and if no one came forward to foster, they would be euthanized, possibly before the 72-hour mark.

According to the post, the Pug was male and had complex medical needs. A willing foster would need to have some medical experience and be prepared to care for a dog with ingrown nails, an eye problem, and a large mass on its abdomen.

This Senior Pug Was So Medically Complex, The Shelter Couldn’t Determine If It Was a Boy or Girl

Christy had never fostered a dog before, but she did have experience with medically complex dogs and currently owned a senior Pug with diabetes. It seemed like an instantly good fit, so Christy applied.

“I had always wanted to help in the past but didn’t have the time or availability to help. The timing was perfect for me this time,” says Christy Solko.

She wouldn’t have to wait long—the rescue reached out almost immediately, and they wanted to warn Christy that this Pug’s health was so poor it could become a hospice situation. Luckily, Christy wasn’t deterred, and she headed to the shelter to pick up what she thought was a critically ill male Pug. What she found when she arrived was not what she expected.

Gender Reveal: This Pug Is a Girl!

Almost immediately after picking up her new foster dog, Christy realized that this Pug was female, not male. Mabel had a large mammary gland tumor, and it hung so low that it nearly touched the ground, and would swing from side to side when she walked. It’s likely that in the chaos of animal rescue work, the shelter had misidentified part of the tumor as testicles, labeling Mabel male instead of female.

Beyond the enormous mass on her stomach, Mabel was also suffering from nails that were so overgrown that they couldn’t be trimmed normally—they were wrapped around her paw pads. Mabel was dirty, missing patches of fur, and covered in open sores and scabbed-over wounds. Everywhere Christy touched her, she felt rough, inflamed, and sore skin.

Mabel was in bad condition—the drive home was uncomfortable for her, and she began howling, crying, coughing, and dry heaving/gagging as they drove to her new home.

Spa Day For Senior Pug Mabel

When they got home, Christy got right to work making Mabel comfortable. She gave Mabel a nice gentle bath, washing her multiple times with medicated shampoo and conditioner to give her some relief from the itch and pain. To help her stop coughing and soothe her throat, Christy gave her slippery elm syrup, which helps to repair and soothe mucus membranes and is known to be beneficial for dogs with irritated throats

Of course, Christy also started to love on Mabel immediately—she was hard to resist, even though she looked a little scruffy from her tough life on the street.

“She has the sweetest face,” says Christy, gushing over Mabel. “I can’t imagine how anyone could not give this little lady everything she deserves.”

The Long Road To Recovery: Vet Visits, Surgery & Medication

To address the more serious issues with Mabel’s help, Christy immediately got her veterinarian involved. Mabel was given allergy shots to relieve her skin of itching and scabbing, and was put on medication for a bacterial infection—both treatments worked quickly, and Mabel’s skin started to clear up.

Her long, ingrown toenails broke on their own before they could be removed, but they are now easy to take care of, even though Mabel’s feet are a little deformed. According to Christy, Mabel’s feet don’t stop her at all, they just make her a little less graceful.

Mabel’s eyes needed to be addressed by a specialist, and they discovered that one of her lenses had become detached. Luckily, the solution to this is pretty simple, and Mabel now is on an eye drop routine to prevent the problem from progressing or irritating her from day to day.

Finally, Mabel’s tumor needed to be removed. During surgery, they also discovered that Mabel had never been spayed and that she had advanced endometriosis. Thankfully, the vets were able to successfully remove the mammary tumor, spay her, and relieve Mabel of what was undoubtedly a lifetime of abdominal discomfort.

A New Leash On Life for Mabel the Pug

“I honestly feel like her life has been saved,” says Christy, who still has lovely Miss Mabel in her care. “She looks and feels like a new dog—you can tell she feels better. She plays, she eats, she is happy and lets us know about it!”

A typical Pug in many ways, Christy and her family were in for one more surprise with Mabel.

“We thought she was just a typical stubborn Pug who didn’t like to listen,” says Christy. “She is definitely food driven. She loves meal time, snacks, trash, her siblings’ snacks…it took us a few weeks to realize that she was deaf!”

Despite her poor hearing, her disfigured feet, and what appears to have been a lifetime of hardship, this now 12-year-old Pug is thriving. Mabel has chosen Christy as her person, and while she loves the whole family, she follows Christy everywhere.

“If she is napping, wakes up, and doesn’t see me, she rushes around the house feverishly looking for me,” says Christy. “As soon as she finds me she gets so excited—she does this every day!”

Mabel is also learning to open up to other people and has become an official part of nightly snuggle time on the couch with Christy, her husband, and all the dogs. Occasionally, Mabel will lie on Christy’s husband’s chest and gaze into his eyes, almost as if she is trying to communicate telepathically. The message is definitely “I love you.”
“I know she has been through a lot,” says Christy of her new best friend Mabel the Pug. “On the street, where she came from, in pain from multiple issues—yet her spirit is not broken. She trusts and loves—she is the sweetest dog I have ever met!”

Unwanted Due to Disabilities & Age, These Pugs Finally Found Someone To Love Them❣️ https://rockykanaka.com/unwanted-due-to-disabilities-age-these-pugs-finally-found-someone-to-love-them/ Tue, 06 Feb 2024 19:55:30 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=59778 Pug Rescue of Austin has been saving pugs and pug mixes for 15 years. Their mission is to rescue and find homes for abused, neglected and unwanted pugs, and they never discriminate on the basis of health or age.The non-profit depends solely on volunteers and donations to care for the hundreds of pugs they’ve rescued for over the years.  (see video of the pugs in action below)

Pug rescue

Pug Rescue finds dogs in need mostly through owner surrenders, those found as strays, or ones that are rescued from shelters. Some of these dogs are disabled or have medical issues that make finding homes for them a challenge, but Pug Rescue never gives up on helping these dogs find their forever homes.

Daily Activities for the Rescued Pugs

From meal time to play time, grooming, and exercise, these pups stay busy all day! Pug Rescue’s President and Board Chair Dave Norris pointed out, “We are entirely, and I mean entirely volunteer run. We have no paid staff.” This means that each day Pug Rescue relies on foster moms and dads to come in and help care for the more than 80 dos who call it home.

Norris shares that many of these pugs have extreme needs, often hourly needs. The amount of work that goes into caring for dogs with special needs, much like the dogs with wheelchairs in the video, is staggering.

Each and every dog that is seen in the video looks happy, healthy, and eager to find a family to call their own.

Challenges That Rescue Organizations Face

As with all non-profit organizations, the biggest need that they face is funding. It is expensive to care for 80+ dogs, many of them with special needs. Norris says, “If we want to keep saving these dogs, we need to ensure we are in the financial health to do so.”

Pug rescue

Norris explains that there are many rescues out there, and new ones are always popping up, making it even more challenging to obtain donations and funding. And because funding is so critical to a rescue’s success, he advises against starting a brand new rescue. Instead, “Research, research, research” and see if there are local established rescues you can join forces with.

Also critical, making sure that you – and others – have the “energy, time, and focus” to fundraise. He goes on to point out, “A lot of people think rescue work is jumping in your car and saving a dog on the side of a road, and it is that. But as important or more important is having the money to do that.”

Rescues Must Have Community Support

Norris also says that shelters have to prove to the communities that they are in that they are a legitimate rescue and one worthy of donating to. Without their support, the rescue would not be able to sustain the needs of so many dogs.

Norris highlights the need for shelters to establish their credibility and value within their communities to secure essential support.  “Gaining community support is crucial,” he said,  “it directly impacts the shelter’s ability to meet the extensive needs of the dogs they care for.” Of course without this vital backing, sustaining the rescue’s operations becomes a significant challenge.

Pug rescue

Luckily, Pug Rescue seems to already be established and well respected in its community. Many people left comments after watching the video about the work and positivity that Pug Rescue spreads throughout Austin’s neighborhoods. It’s proof that rescues and communities can work together to help dogs in need live happy lives.
