Greyhound racing is one of the most dangerous, exploitative industries still operating in the shadows of U.S. entertainment. Dogs are forced to sprint at breakneck speeds, risking broken legs, crushed skulls, and fatal collisions, all while being confined for up to 23 hours a day in small, stacked cages with little or no socialization.

And yet, this cruelty persists for one reason: money. While most U.S. tracks have shuttered, Americans are still legally allowed to place bets on races both here and abroad. This steady stream of gambling revenue props up the industry, sustaining cruelty in countries like Mexico and Australia where oversight is even weaker.

Now, lawmakers are finally taking action. The newly introduced Greyhound Protection Act (H.R. 5017) would ban betting on all greyhound races—domestic and international. Advocates say this could deliver the final blow to an outdated, abusive practice that has no place in modern society.

👉 SIGN THE PETITION to urge Congress to pass the Greyhound Protection Act and shut down greyhound racing for good.

The Hidden Toll on Dogs

Behind the flashing lights of betting screens and the thrill of the race is a grim reality. Thousands of greyhounds endure lives of suffering, marked by neglect, injury, and even death. Once their racing careers are over, many dogs are discarded or killed because they’re no longer profitable.

Veterinarians and investigators have documented the shocking toll: spinal injuries, crushed skulls, untreated wounds, and malnourishment. With so many dogs confined for nearly an entire day in barren cages, behavioral and psychological scars run deep. This is not sport—it’s systemic cruelty disguised as entertainment.

A Crucial Step Forward

The Greyhound Protection Act aims to cut off the industry at its source—betting revenue. By banning wagers nationwide, the bill would remove the financial incentive keeping tracks and breeders in business. Supporters stress that without gambling, greyhound racing cannot survive.

Animal advocates have been sounding the alarm for years. Public pressure has already led to steep declines in U.S. racing, but loopholes continue to allow American dollars to fuel races overseas. Closing this loophole is the only way to ensure the suffering ends once and for all.

👉 SIGN THE PETITION today to demand lawmakers pass the Greyhound Protection Act and finally end this abusive industry.

Why This Matters Now

This is not just about dogs on racetracks—it’s about our values as a society. Allowing animals to be injured, discarded, and killed for profit is a stain on our moral fabric. With overwhelming public opposition to greyhound racing, the momentum for change has never been stronger.

Passing the Greyhound Protection Act would align the U.S. with growing global recognition that animals are not disposable objects for gambling. It would send a powerful message: that compassion, not cruelty, should guide our laws.

For every dog languishing in a cage, for every greyhound forced to race until their body breaks, this legislation could be the difference between suffering and safety.

👉 SIGN THE PETITION now to support the Greyhound Protection Act. Together, we can put an end to greyhound racing and give these dogs the love and dignity they deserve.

To continue speaking up, sign these other petitions as well:

In a recent TikTok video, Sandy Dog Rescue shared a heartfelt moment showcasing the remarkable progress of a dog who used to be extremely scared of humans. Viewers see Montana playing in a large yard and when she hears her foster dad calling her, she runs straight to him at full speed. This moment is a testament to the special bond the dog now shares with her foster family.

@sandy.dog.rescue Montana is making slow but steady progress every single day. I am so proud of her and so so grateful for her foster parents. She is looking for a home with another dog because she loves them!! and other dogs really help her come out of her shell. She is a sweet, gentle 7 month old and about 15 lbs Italian greyhound mix. Please share her to help her find a family for Christmas!! 🥹💜 #doglover #adoptdontshop #fosterdog #rescuedog ♬ everything works out in the end – Luke Willies

Blossoming In Foster Home

Montana has had a miserable puppyhood—she spent the first five months of her life living in a shed with her sister. But now, thanks to Sandy Dog Rescue, this sweet pup has been given a second chance at love and a happy life.

The Southern California rescue not only got Montana out of her pitiful situation but also placed her in a loving foster home. This new abode has been so good for the puppy that in just a few weeks, her temperament has improved drastically.

Being a puppy who had never interacted with humans, Montana was fearful and anxious around people. Whenever anyone approached, she would flinch and become agitated.

Thanks to the love, patience, and structure she’s received in her foster home, the Iggie mix is slowly emerging from her shell and beginning to trust people. This transformation in just a few weeks at her foster home offers hope for a bright future as a beloved member of a forever family.

Can You Give Montana The Love She Deserves?

Montana’s behavioral challenges stem from her loveless, isolated past, but she is naturally a gentle and sweet soul, according to the rescue. Weighing just 15 lbs, this “Iggy” thrives on love and care and is on her way to becoming the perfect canine companion anyone could wish for.

Rocky Kanaka, a pet rescue advocate says, “Montana is proof that no matter how rough a start a dog has, with the right support, they can overcome anything and become the loving pet we all dream of.”

With more than a thousand likes on Instagram, Montana’s story is winning the hearts of netizens. A user commented, “Montana❤️ Thank you for taking care of her until a great TLC home with a dog or two comes along. 🐾🏡🙏❤️”

Montana would do well in a home with another dog as she loves their company and would benefit from their guidance while adjusting to her new environment. Also, training her wouldn’t be much of a hassle because the pup is smart, a quick learner, and she is potty and crate trained

If you think you can be the one to offer love and structure to Montana, you are welcome to send an adoption application.

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic? Are Italian Greyhounds Hypoallergenic? https://rockykanaka.com/are-greyhounds-hypoallergenic-are-italian-greyhounds-hypoallergenic/ Fri, 14 Jul 2023 15:20:04 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=32066 In the realm of canine companions, the question of hypoallergenic dog breeds often arises, and Greyhounds are no exception. These elegant and gentle dogs are known for their impressive speed and graceful nature. But for allergy sufferers, the pressing question remains: Are Greyhounds hypoallergenic? In this article, we delve into the hypoallergenic qualities of Greyhounds, explore the factors that contribute to allergies, and provide insights to help you make an informed decision.

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic

Understanding Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds

Before diving into the specifics of Greyhounds, it’s important to understand what hypoallergenic dog breeds are. Hypoallergenic breeds are believed to produce fewer allergenic substances or shed less dander, reducing the risk of triggering allergic responses. While no dog breed can be completely hypoallergenic, some breeds are considered more compatible with individuals who have allergies.

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic?

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic

Unfortunately, Greyhounds are not typically considered hypoallergenic dogs. Their short, smooth coats do shed, releasing dander and potentially allergenic proteins into the environment. Additionally, Greyhounds have a higher tendency to produce saliva, which can also contain allergenic proteins. These factors make them less suitable for individuals with allergies seeking a hypoallergenic companion.

“I have terrible allergies and I have a greyhound. I take an allergy pill every day and I don’t have any problems. I think greyhounds are a great breed for people with allergies because they shed so little”

Chloe, Greyhound owner

While Greyhounds are not hypoallergenic, but they do shed less than some other breeds. They have a single coat of hair that is very fine and smooth. This means that their dander (dead skin cells) is not as easily airborne as the dander from dogs with double coats. However, some people with allergies may still be sensitive to greyhounds.

Factors that Contribute to Allergies

To understand why certain breeds may trigger allergies, it’s important to recognize the sources of allergens. Allergies are immune responses triggered by proteins present in pet dander, saliva, urine, and feces. When exposed to these proteins, individuals with allergies may experience symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and respiratory issues.

Managing Allergies with Greyhounds

If you are an allergy sufferer who still wishes to have a Greyhound as a companion, there are steps you can take to minimize allergic reactions:

Regular Grooming:

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic - grooming

Regular brushing of your Greyhound’s coat can help reduce loose hair and dander, minimizing the presence of allergens in your home. Additionally, bathing your Greyhound with hypoallergenic shampoos can further reduce the allergen load on their skin and coat.

Clean Living Environment:

Cleaning - Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic

Maintaining a clean living environment is crucial for allergy management. Regular vacuuming, using air purifiers with HEPA filters, and keeping bedding and furniture clean can help reduce the accumulation of allergens. Creating designated pet-free areas in your home, such as bedrooms, can provide allergy-free zones.

Consider an Air Filter

Air or HVAC filters are also great for reducing the amount of loose dander and fur floating around in your home. The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology recommends using HEPA filters for smaller living spaces and single rooms and HVAC filters with a MERV between 11 and 13 for larger homes.

Consult with an Allergist:

Are Greyhounds Hypoallergenic - consult with allergist

If you have severe allergies, it is advisable to consult with an allergist before bringing a Greyhound into your home. They can provide personalized advice and recommend appropriate allergy management strategies, including medications or immunotherapy.

Consider Fostering or Pet Allergen Testing:

If you are unsure about your compatibility with Greyhounds or any other dog breed, consider fostering a Greyhound temporarily to assess your allergic reactions. Another option is pet allergen testing, where a healthcare professional can perform skin tests or blood tests to determine your specific allergens and their severity.

Should I consult with an allergist before getting an Italian Greyhound?

If you have known allergies or sensitivities, it is advisable to consult with an allergist before bringing an Italian Greyhound into your home. They can provide personalized advice and help determine if the breed is suitable for you.

Conclusion

While Greyhounds may not be hypoallergenic dogs, some individuals with allergies may find that they can live comfortably with these gentle companions. However, it’s important to recognize that individual sensitivities and allergies can vary greatly. If you have allergies and are considering adopting a Greyhound, taking precautions such as regular grooming and maintaining a clean living environment can help minimize allergen exposure. Consulting with an allergist is also highly recommended to ensure the best possible outcome for both you and your potential Greyhound companion.
