Great Dane Found Starving at LA Shelter—Her Fight for Survival is Just Beginning
Residing in a shelter in Los Angeles in a heartbreakingly emaciated state, a Great Dane named Sweet Pea struggled to survive. Reduced to skin and bones with almost no muscle mass, she desperately needed a rescue to give her a second chance. (Watch the TikTok below.)
The shelter sent a desperate plea to Wags and Walks Rescue, who decided to help the frail dog. They got her out of the shelter’s confines and drove her to their rescue, hoping to transform her health. This should have been the start of better days for Sweet Pea, but instead, her health took a sudden turn for the worse leading to a trip to the ER.

After hearing about this girl, we knew we had to help so our team visited the shelter to get her to safety. Sweet Pea’s condition was critical, and very shortly after joining the program she started to decline. Her gums were pale and was having difficulty breathing so she was rushed to the ER for further testing and overnight care. SweetPea is now stable after 24/7 medical attention, but has a long road to recovery given the severity of her emaciation. While we don’t know about her past, we do know it’s only better days ahead. Further Challenges for Sweet Pea
With pale gums and breathing difficulties, Sweet Pea was in critical condition. She underwent urgent tests, received fluids, and was placed under intensive overnight care.
After her night at the ER, Sweet Pea became stable and was discharged. However, she showed no signs of improvement as she still faced difficulty in breathing and bowel issues. This resulted in another trip to the ER where further testing revealed grave news – she was diagnosed with pneumonia.
The illness has made it even more difficult for the dog to bounce back and the road to her recovery will likely be even longer. She is currently resting, recovering, and regularly monitored.
