From shy seniors to playful pups, these Danes have one thing in common: they’re all hoping someone will finally see them, choose them, and never let them go. They’ve waited long enough, maybe it’s time they found the forever family they’ve always deserved.

4. Harley: Harlequin Stunner

Mabel, great dane for adoption

This Harlequin coated Great Dane female was brought into the shelter’s night drop nearly a week before Rocky comes across her. This girl unfortunately came in not only emaciated, but infested with ticks. The person who brought her into the night drop also brought in two other dogs, however those other two dogs have thankfully been adopted. She’s the only one left at the shelter back in isolation because she hasn’t been able to get a health check yet due to her growling and nervous behavior. When the person brought the dogs in, they apparently stated the 3 were running together near a school, but it seemed suspicious because it was an odd trio – a Great Dane, Basset Hound and Bulldog. The person took the time to put them in separate kennels, and the situation generally seemed odd to where it’s possible that this person was the owner. Learn More

5. Alice: Affectionate 8-year-old Great Dane

Alice - Great Dane
Credit: Pet Haven Inc. of MN

Alice is a sweet, affectionate 8-year-old Great Dane mix with the heart of a puppy and the soul of a best friend. She adjusted quickly to her foster home and has proven to be house-trained, crate-trained, and incredibly loyal. True to her breed, she’s a leaner—happiest when she’s snuggling against you or half-lounging in your lap (yes, all 104 pounds of her!). She prefers not to be crated for long hours and can be vocal when left alone, so she’s looking for a home without shared walls.

Alice might be 8, but don’t let that fool you—she still has so much love to give. Her soft eyes, slow tail wags, and constant cuddles are a reminder that some of the best companions come with a few gray hairs. If you think you’re the one to make Alice’s golden years her best yet, apply today at https://pethavenmn.org/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application. Learn More

Currently at a shelter and dreaming of a soft couch (or maybe the whole couch), Hootie is looking for either a foster or a forever home in the DC area. She’s sweet, sensitive, and searching for someone who sees beyond her size to the soft soul underneath.

Hootie has so much love to give and is ready to start her new life—whether that begins with a foster or forever home. She just needs someone to open their heart (and maybe upgrade their dog bed size). Could that be you? Apply to meet Hootie and help her find the love and comfort she’s been waiting for. Learn More

7. Beefcake: 1-year-old Goofball

Beefcake is a fun-loving, affectionate Great Dane with a big personality to match his big size! At just one year old, he’s still figuring out how to navigate the world (and his giant paws). He adores his humans and will lean into you for love, but he’s still working on his manners.

Because Beefcake is deaf, he relies on visual cues for training and communication. He’s currently working with a professional dog trainer to build confidence, improve leash manners, and address some territorial behaviors. Learn More

8. Marley: Young & Energetic Snuggler

Telling a Giant Dog she’s a GOOD GIRL 🥹 https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-103-mabel/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 15:37:03 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=123505 Here to vote on her name? Scroll down

When I first walked into the back kennel area—the one closed off to the public—I didn’t know what I’d find. But I definitely wasn’t expecting a Great Dane, skin draped over bone, ears like angel wings, and eyes filled with fear. She was growling, and with her size, that’s not something you take lightly.

But here’s the thing: when a dog growls, she’s not being bad. She’s communicating. And Harley (or Mabel—we’re letting the community decide her name) had a lot to say.

Night Drop Mystery

This girl was left at night drop—a place where people can surrender dogs after hours. But here’s where things get fishy. She didn’t come alone. A Basset Hound and a Bulldog were dropped off at the same time, each in separate kennels. All full-breed dogs. All suspiciously in poor condition. The kind of trio that screams “backyard breeding.”

Harley, likely used for breeding, showed every sign of neglect and overuse. Covered in ticks. No collar. Spine protruding. Teats suggesting recent puppies. Five days in, she still hadn’t been health-checked because her fear-based behavior made it unsafe for the staff.

But this wasn’t aggression—it was pain and trauma talking.

A Harlequin Coat & a Heavy Past

Now, let’s talk breed. She’s almost certainly a Harlequin Great Dane, known for their patchy black-and-white coats and gentle nature. These dogs are nicknamed “gentle giants” for a reason—but gentle doesn’t mean unbreakable. And Harley had clearly been broken.

Some people think these dogs are majestic status symbols. But they’re still dogs. They need love, shelter, and care. Judging by her condition, she wasn’t getting any of that. She was likely bred for profit, left outdoors, untreated for parasites, and fed just enough to survive.

Training Tip: Read the Tail

Even though Harley moved around the kennel, her tail was tucked tight under her belly. A wagging tail doesn’t always mean a happy dog, and a tucked tail doesn’t mean aggression—it means uncertainty. One of the biggest learning opportunities in this sit was recognizing that even big dogs can be just as scared as the smallest Chihuahua.

Training isn’t always about commands. Sometimes it’s about body language. About giving space. About using treats as a trust-builder, not just a reward.

Treats, Ticks & Tiny Victories

Let’s talk about “The Scoop”—my signature moment of getting a dog to relax enough to settle into my lap. It might sound like a small thing, but for dogs like Harley, it’s huge. It’s proof of safety.

At first, she wouldn’t come near. So I did what I often do: hunkered down, avoided eye contact, and offered treats with an open palm. Slowly, her growl faded. Then came the sniff. Then the nudge. Then the moment her giant head gently rested next to my hand.

Her body was literally crawling with ticks—some the size of my thumbnail. She had a raw spot on her neck, possibly from a too-tight collar or excessive scratching. Whatever it was, it hurt. And she didn’t let anyone touch her until she knew she was safe.

She Needed a Tick Bath—Stat

With Mel (our go-to groomer) out of town, Charyl from the shelter staff stepped in. She didn’t hesitate to get up close and remove the worst of the ticks. Then came the bath—a spa moment Harley may have never experienced before.

And let me tell you—this big girl in that tub? She melted. Regal, calm, trusting. Watching her receive love and care after everything she’d endured… it just hit me.

Flip’s Farm: A Place for Healing

I’m already thinking about bringing Harley to Flip’s Farm. Our Southern California coffee farm, named after my late dog Flip, is more than just a place to grow beans—it’s where dogs heal. Harley could have her own space, air conditioning, and freedom to roam without fear.

Our coffee doesn’t just taste great—it supports dogs like Harley. Every bag you buy helps fund the work we do to rehabilitate forgotten dogs and give them a second chance.

Naming a Survivor

We still haven’t decided between Harley and Mabel, and we’re letting the community vote. Harley comes from her Harlequin coat. Mabel just feels gentle and grandmotherly in the best way. Either way, this dog is already showing her true colors.

She’s resilient. She’s brave. And with some time, love, and a full belly, she’s going to make someone an incredible companion.

Next Steps

Here’s what happens now:

  • Tick treatment is underway and working.
  • She’s receiving small, frequent meals to safely gain weight.
  • A microchip scan showed no chip, and no one has come forward.
  • We’re waiting on her full health check once she’s comfortable enough to tolerate it.

But most importantly: she needs a home. One that understands big dogs. One with patience. One with a soft bed and a big heart.

If you can’t adopt her, please share her story. Because this girl isn’t just a dog in need—she’s a symbol of survival. And someone out there is meant to be her family.

Great Dane Found Starving at LA Shelter—Her Fight for Survival is Just Beginning https://rockykanaka.com/great-dane-found-starving-at-la-shelter-her-fight-for-survival-is-just-beginning/ Mon, 24 Feb 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=104161 Residing in a shelter in Los Angeles in a heartbreakingly emaciated state, a Great Dane named Sweet Pea struggled to survive. Reduced to skin and bones with almost no muscle mass, she desperately needed a rescue to give her a second chance. (Watch the TikTok below.)

The shelter sent a desperate plea to Wags and Walks Rescue, who decided to help the frail dog. They got her out of the shelter’s confines and drove her to their rescue, hoping to transform her health. This should have been the start of better days for Sweet Pea, but instead, her health took a sudden turn for the worse leading to a trip to the ER.

@wagsandwalksla

Meet our newest rescue, SweetPea🤍 Over the weekend, we received a plea about a Great Dane in a local shelter who was severely emaciated and needed immediate rescue. After hearing about this girl, we knew we had to help so our team visited the shelter to get her to safety. Sweet Pea’s condition was critical, and very shortly after joining the program she started to decline. Her gums were pale and was having difficulty breathing so she was rushed to the ER for further testing and overnight care. SweetPea is now stable after 24/7 medical attention, but has a long road to recovery given the severity of her emaciation. While we don’t know about her past, we do know it’s only better days ahead. With her hospitalization and long-term medical care needed, she needs your support. To donate to SweetPea’s care, click the link in our bio or visit wagsandwalks.org 🐾

Further Challenges for Sweet Pea

With pale gums and breathing difficulties, Sweet Pea was in critical condition. She underwent urgent tests, received fluids, and was placed under intensive overnight care.

After her night at the ER, Sweet Pea became stable and was discharged. However, she showed no signs of improvement as she still faced difficulty in breathing and bowel issues. This resulted in another trip to the ER where further testing revealed grave news – she was diagnosed with pneumonia.

The illness has made it even more difficult for the dog to bounce back and the road to her recovery will likely be even longer. She is currently resting, recovering, and regularly monitored.

“Dogs like Sweet Pea don’t just need rescue—they need a second chance, patience, and unwavering love. No dog should have to fight this hard just to survive, but with the right care, their resilience is nothing short of amazing.” — Rocky Kanaka, Pet Rescue Advocate.

This Great Dane Thinks He’s Tiny and the Results Are Hilarious! https://rockykanaka.com/do-dogs-like-to-cuddle/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=79881 A hilarious TikTok video of a Great Dane has everyone in stitches, but it also conveys the sweetness of this gentle giant. The video, posted by TikTok user, @cypressanddewey, shows a Great Dane trying his best to awkwardly maneuver his huge body in between his pet parents on the couch for a cuddle session.

Due to his big size, the dog called Cypress tries to find many ways to sit on the couch and snuggle with his parents at the same time. While his humans are trying to relax and binge-watch the TV show, Survivor, the dog keeps on interrupting them to get what he wants: snuggles.

Gentle Giant Goes Viral For His Cuddle Routine

Cypress can be seen making space for himself beside his dog mom and hilariously putting his behind in front of her face. But the sweet dog doesn’t bother to care that he might obstruct her view of the TV, or cause his parents some pain while lounging his large body on top of them, or shoving his private parts on their faces.

No one can blame this Great Dane for unintentionally inconveniencing his humans because clearly he just wants some love from his parents.

The entertaining video has reached about 60k views on TikTok. In addition, many users have expressed their adoration for the video in the comments section. Jonathan Hansen writes, “Doggy cuddles are the best,” while another TikTok user, Richard Brent comments, “Wouldn’t have it any other way! 🥰”

Do Dogs Like To Cuddle?

This is a controversial topic. Some dog parents like in Cypress’ instance can say that their dog loves to cuddle with them on the couch. While there are other pet parents like a Reddit user, u/Gotmash, who claims their dog doesn’t like to cuddle and gets super awkward. So, the question you may have in mind is “Do dogs like to be cuddled?”

Every dog is an individual – they all have their preferences, and find comfort and security in different ways.

According to Best Behaviour Dog Training School in the UK, “every dog is an individual – they all have their preferences, and find comfort and security in different ways. Some dogs love nothing more than to be as close to us as possible and to be showered with cuddles, while others prefer to simply be in our presence while having their own space.”

So, the answer to the question, “Do dogs like to snuggle” is not straightforward. Essentially, you have to find what your dog is comfortable with and go along with that. You don’t want to force anything on them and be patient in understanding what they want.

Why Do Some Dogs Like To Cuddle?

As per Zac Pilossoph, a veterinarian, dogs often enjoy cuddling because they view their owners as pack members, prompting them to display affection and loyalty, which are natural instincts within canine social dynamics.

But there can be other answers to the question, “Why do dogs like to snuggle” besides showing love. According to a certified animal behaviorist, Kristyn Echterling-Savage, fear is another cause of your dog cuddling with you.

In her words “Dogs afraid of thunderstorms, fireworks, or other loud or scary environmental events might try to cuddle.” Kristyn warns that it is important to understand whether your dog is trying to cuddle due to love or fear, “because providing too much attention when dogs engage in a fear-related response can make the behavior worse long-term.”

Why Some Dogs Don’t Like To Cuddle

Now you may want to know why some dogs don’t like snuggling with their humans. For this, Kristyn, explains that dogs show affection in unique ways, influenced by factors such as breed, genetics, and early life experiences. Additionally, some dogs’ affection may be temperature-dependent, varying significantly when they’re too hot or cold.

Do Dogs Like To Cuddle When Sleeping?

Sandra C. Mitchell, a veterinarian, believes that there are multiple sleeping positions that a dog can take. One of those sleeping positions is “The Cuddle Bug,” which means that some dogs like to cuddle while sleeping. So, during bedtime, they can cuddle up with you or with another pet.

A dog owner describes their dog’s usual sleeping position on Reddit, saying, “My dog likes to be the little spoon when it’s time to sleep. He’ll have his head on a pillow, body under the blankets like a person, and fall asleep almost instantly when cuddled.”

The question arises, why do some dogs like to cuddle in bed? Dog experts at Purina clarify, “This sleeping position is a sign of affection and bonding. It suggests that your dog wants to get closer to a person or another dog and is comfortable around them.”

Do Dogs Like To Be Hugged And Kissed?

A Reddit user, loratliff, asks the question in the subreddit, r/dogs, about do dogs like to be hugged or kissed. Like cuddles with dogs, the answers about dog hugs are not simple as well. Some users, like ataraxia, say, “My dog loves hugs and kisses. He asks for them. The important factor here is that he loves them from people he knows well, people with whom he has bonded.”

Meanwhile, the post author states, “Personally, my dogs are on the opposite end of the spectrum: my Griffon would rather walk over hot pokers than be kissed/hugged (but he’ll lay next to me on the couch and cuddle close in bed on his terms), whereas my Pointer will accept kisses/hugs/head pats with a soft, low tail wag and the sweetest doe eyes.”

So, what do experts have to say about this? When it comes to hugs, “experts in dog behavior believe that, in general, dogs do not like being embraced. However, every dog has a unique personality. Some may dislike hugs more strongly than others, and some may actually adore them,” as per ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

On the topic of kisses, Reader’s Digest cites animal behavior specialist, Rachel Salant who argues, “Whether or not a dog tolerates or even enjoys kisses from a human depends on the individual dog, his or her upbringing, and what he or she has learned from the experiences with people being very close to the face.”

For many furry friends, kisses become a delight when paired with favorite activities like belly rubs and scratches behind the ears. This association helps them view kissing as a pleasant experience. That said, every dog is different, and some just aren’t fans of kissing. Just like people some dogs like to snuggle and some dogs don’t. Some dogs like to cuddle, and some dogs don’t.

Mom dumps Great Dane because kids wont feed him 😔 https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-34/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 18:39:31 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=65330 When I first laid eyes on Scoobie, it was impossible not to notice his size. “Wow, you are a big dog,” I thought, admiringly. But size wasn’t the only thing that stood out about Scoobie; his immediate interest in the treats in my pocket signaled a quick way to his heart. Starting with a treat, I could see we were going to make progress in no time.

Scoobie’s Appetite for Life (and Treats)

Right off the bat, Scoobie’s hunger was apparent, not just for the treats but for a little affection and recognition. Licking his lips in anticipation, he seemed ready to trust, to give us a chance to make things right for him. And his name? Scoobie couldn’t have been more perfect for him. Testing out his response to his name with a few treats, it was clear he was all ears, ready to listen, and eager for whatever came next.

A Sad Backstory with a Touch of Humor

As I spent more time with Scoobie, the gravity of his situation became more apparent. Despite the heavy heart it brought me, I tried to keep the mood light, joking about his eagerness for treats. But humor couldn’t fully mask the sadness in his situation, visible in every rib, every part of his emaciated frame that spoke volumes of his past struggles.

Gentle Approaches and the Power of Curiosity

sitting with dogs: Scoobie

With Scoobie, like many rescue dogs, the approach was everything. Avoiding direct eye contact and petting initially, I focused on letting him lead the interaction, fostering his curiosity. It was essential for Scoobie to feel no pressure, to explore this new relationship at his own pace, driven by his own growing trust and interest.

Unraveling Scoobie’s Past

Calling in Alexis to dive into Scoobie’s background, we discovered he was a repeat guest at the shelter, with a history dating back to 2022. Each piece of his story added another layer to his complex situation: from being turned in by his family, to their various reasons for surrender, to the challenges they faced with his care. It painted a picture of a dog deeply loved at times but ultimately failed by his circumstances.

sitting with dogs: Scoobie

Initially surrendered in 2022 by his family due to what were described as manageable issues, it seemed there was a chance for a turnaround when they decided to take him back, suggesting a momentary resolution to their problems. However, this reunion was fleeting. The family, facing a move to Mexico, made the difficult decision to surrender Scoobie once again. There were also some health concerns that contributed to his noticeable weight loss. These insights into Scoobie’s past reveal not just the struggles of one dog, but also the broader challenges some pet owners face in providing care, underscoring the complexity of Scoobie’s situation and the path that led him back to the shelter, searching for a new beginning.

The Breed Debate: Great Dane or Mystery Mix?

Scoobie’s towering presence had us all guessing: purebred Great Dane or a mix with something else? Given his size, you’d lean towards Great Dane without a second thought, but his slender frame threw us a curveball. It sparked a bit of a breed guessing game among us. Some thought maybe there’s a bit of Black Mouth Cur in him because of his lean build, which, let’s be honest, was more pronounced due to his lack of groceries than genetics.

sitting with dogs: Scoobie

Then there was the wild card guess – a hint of Rhodesian Ridgeback, probably inspired more by his regal stance than actual lineage. But really, his emaciated state was playing tricks on our eyes, making us see lines and curves that suggested other breeds. The truth is, Great Danes like Scoobie come with their own set of challenges – they’re not just any large breed. They need a carefully balanced diet, not just a heap of kibble, to support their rapid growth and size. This whole breed guessing game, while a bit of fun, really highlighted the special attention dogs like Scoobie require, especially when they’ve had a rough start. It’s a reminder that, whatever his genetic makeup, Scoobie’s needs are as large as his heart – and just as important to fill.

A Plan for Recovery

As we navigated Scoobie’s needs, it became clear that his road to recovery would be through careful diet and medical attention. Our sponsor, Sunday’s dog food, generously committed to supporting Scoobie’s nutritional needs for a full year. It was a testament to the community and companies willing to step up and make a difference in the lives of dogs like Scoobie.

What’s in a Name? Scoobie’s Tale

When you hear the name Scoobie, you can’t help but think of a certain cartoon Great Dane, known for his appetite and adventures. It’s almost too fitting, considering our Scoobie’s own journey and his striking presence. Naming him Scoobie wasn’t just about sticking to a theme; it was about capturing his spirit. Despite his daunting size and the hardships he’s faced, there’s a friendly, almost goofy side to him that immediately endears him to anyone he meets. It’s as if the name itself carries a bit of hope and a promise of better, brighter days ahead. So, every time we call out “Scoobie,” we’re not just summoning a dog; we’re invoking the resilience and joy we see in him, despite everything. Plus, let’s be honest, it’s just fun to say. Scoobie, like his namesake, is becoming a bit of an icon around here, proving that even in tough times, a little bit of levity goes a long way.

The Scoop: A Gesture of Trust and Comfort

In an effort to deepen our connection, I decided to try “the scoop” with Scoobie, a move I’ve found to be a powerful way to show trust and offer comfort. Given Scoobie’s considerable size, this was no small feat. The idea was to gently coax him into my lap, to envelop him in a reassuring embrace that communicated safety and affection. This moment was about more than just physical closeness; it was an attempt to convey to Scoobie that he was valued and protected. While Scoobie’s towering stature made the scoop a bit of an adventure, it underscored a vital point in our interaction – showing him, through actions, that he could trust and lean on the humans around him, perhaps for the first time in a while.

Books and Barks: The Coolest Reading Club

Let’s talk about the coolest thing happening at the shelter – the reading program. It’s exactly what it sounds like: folks dropping by to read to dogs like Scoobie, turning their kennels into front-row seats at story time. It’s a win-win; the dogs get company and a break from the usual shelter noise, and volunteers get to test out their storytelling skills on a very forgiving audience. This isn’t just about killing time; it’s about comfort, companionship, and maybe practicing those public speaking skills in the most chill environment possible. Who knew that the path to a dog’s heart could be through the pages of a good book?

A Call to Action for Scoobie

sitting with dogs: Scoobie

Scoobie’s journey is far from over, and he’s ready for a forever home that can provide the love, care, and stability he deserves. Sharing his story could be the key to finding that perfect match, proving once again the power of community in transforming the lives of rescue dogs. Whether through adoption or spreading the word, every little bit helps in ensuring a brighter future for Scoobie.

Supporting Scoobie and Others Like Him

As we wrapped up our time together, it was clear Scoobie had made an impression not just on me but on everyone who would hear his story. From his playful demeanor to his gentle acceptance of affection, Scoobie showed the resilience and love that make dogs like him so special. Now, it’s up to us to support Scoobie and many others like him, offering them the second chance they so rightly deserve.

Discover the Daniff: The Gentle Giant of the Designer Dog World https://rockykanaka.com/daniff-dog/ Thu, 09 Nov 2023 20:40:50 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=40542 Giant dog breeds are undeniably intriguing—what could life be like with a dog the size of a small horse? Many people fantasize about owning a giant breed, but few people enjoy living this dream. If you have considered owning an extra-large dog, you’ve probably looked into Great Danes, and some variety of Mastiffs—but did you know there’s a designer mixed breed combo of these two popular giants?

The Daniff is a Mastiff Great Dane mix with massive features and a gentle, loyal, loving personality. While mixed-breed dogs have become more popular in the past few decades, there are legitimate reasons to be suspicious of “designer” breeds like the Daniff. Does combining these giant breeds enhance health or well-being, or is it simply a marketing tactic to sell puppies?

Let’s explore the world of the Great Dane mix with Mastiff and learn a little about what it might take for you to make one of these beautiful dogs a member of your family.

Meet 9 Daniffs from Instagram

Daniffs are a mix of Great Dane and any variety of Mastiff. The American Kennel Club recognizes at least a dozen varieties of Mastiffs:

  • Boerboel (South African Mastiff)
  • Broholmer (Danish Mastiff)
  • Bullmastiff
  • Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff)
  • Dogo Argentino (Argentine Mastiff)
  • Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff)
  • English Mastiff
  • Neapolitan Mastiff (Italian Mastiff)
  • Perro de Presa Canario (Canary Mastiff)
  • Tibetan Mastiff
  • Tosa (Japanese Mastiff)

Great Danes are also a variety of Mastiff from Germany, so a Daniff is a mix of two different types of Mastiff, but one must be a Great Dane. There are also several other Mastiff breeds not recognized by the AKC that are recognized by international kennel clubs. These breeds are not common in the United States, but would still create a Daniff dog when mixed with a Great Dane.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at a handful of giant, adorable, and diverse Daniffs from around the world!

1. Moose

Kreed is a French Daniff—a Great Dane Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff) mix! Kreed has the classic French Mastiff fur color and some of the face wrinkles the breed is also known for, but he’s much leaner than the average Dogue de Bordeaux thanks to his Great Dane parentage.

7. Bear

Bear is a beautiful English Mastiff mix with Great Dane with a ton of personality. A little weird but so entertaining, Bear has the funny and expressive face many Mastiffs have. Don’t worry, she’s not judging you…probably.

When you own a giant breed, they can do things other dogs can’t—like drink from the human water fountain! Lando is a Great Dane mix Bullmastiff from Chicago who spends as much time as possible playing at the park and going outside with his humans.

Great Dane Mastiff Mix Basic Info

The term “designer dog breed” is something of a misnomer. The term was created as a marketing tactic to sell mixed-breed dogs, and it has worked pretty well. Nevertheless, it’s important to understand that breeds like the Daniff aren’t purebred dogs or recognized by the American Kennel Club or other reputable breeder organizations.

Daniffs are unique even among designer mixed breeds since a Daniff can be a combination of Great Dane and more than one dozen other breeds. In the United States, Daniffs will most commonly be Great Dane mix with Bullmastiff or an English Mastiff Great Dane mix, but this isn’t the rule. Any Mastiff x Great Dane mix qualifies as a Daniff.

Because there is even less standardization amongst Daniffs than other mixed breed dogs, it can be quite difficult to predict things like temperament, size, and health. This said, we’ve done our best to compile general information about living with a Great Dane Mastiff mix—just remember, every dog is an individual and these pieces of information may not apply to every Daniff dog.

Daniff Temperament

Gentle, affectionate, and patient, Daniffs are known to be fabulous family dogs who often love children, other dogs, and even small animals. Courageous and protective, Daniffs develop deep bonds with their families and may be slightly nervous of strangers or suspicious of new situations until they see that everything is safe. Generally cheerful and goofy, many Daniffs act like giant puppies and enjoy gentle tussling, playing with toys, and opportunities to make a little mischief.

My “Daniff” 7yo is one of the best damned dogs I’ve ever known. I feel the mix lets the Dane side help mellow the otherwise nervous tendencies that Cane [Corsos] can have. He’s not wily but is very smart and really just wants everyone to be happy,” says a Reddit user sharing their experience with a Great Dane Mastiff mix in a comment. “He has a slightly less “jowly” look than a full mastiff but you can still see the droop. Longer nose, giant floppy ears. His tail is a weapon … any man around 6′ tall may well want a cup because we’re the perfect height to get the tip of the tail whopping us right below the belt. It’s like getting smacked by a pit bull tail that is 18″ higher reach.”

Intelligent and energetic though still easy going and sometimes tentative, Daniffs do especially well with positive reinforcement training and early socialization to weed out any nervousness or shyness. Quick learners, Daniffs are very receptive to training and enjoy routine to help them feel secure in their home lives. Because of their enormous size, Daniffs need training and socialization to be safely handleable and to safely interact with other people and dogs.

Daniff Size

Daniffs are big dogs—the term “giant breed” isn’t an exaggeration, and most Daniffs pass 100 pounds before age one. On average, Daniffs range from 27–33 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 115–190 pounds when fully grown. Of course, the adult size of your Daniff will depend on what type of Mastiff they are mixed with, the most common being English Mastiffs and Bullmastiffs.

To give you an idea of Daniff size range, take a look at the height and weight of 12 of the Mastiff breeds recognized by the AKC. Remember, Great Danes are typically 28–32 inches tall and weigh between 110–175 pounds.

Daniff Health

Giant dog breeds are unfortunately plagued by a number of health conditions that can significantly shorten their lives, and the number one cause of death amongst Great Danes is bloat. A serious and life-threatening condition, bloat is especially common in large, deep chested dogs like the Daniff. Other health issues to be aware of if you own a Daniff include:

  • Joint problems (e.g. hip and elbow dysplasia)
  • Eye and vision problems
  • Heart issues
  • Thyroid issues

Where To Find Daniff Puppies for Sale

We do not recommend buying a Daniff puppy—or any mixed breed dog—from a breeder. If you have your heart set on Great Dane or Mastiff mix, we recommend visiting your local shelter or working with breed-specific rescues that specialize in giant breeds. Mixed breed dogs are bred purely for profit and not for health or temperament, and it is best not to support backyard breeding programs that produce designer breeds like the Daniff.

Daniff Dog FAQ

Don’t scroll away just yet! We have answers to your pressing questions about Great Dane Mastiff mixes.

What is the life expectancy of a Daniff?

Unfortunately, giant breeds are relatively short-lived, and the average lifespan for a Daniff dog is only 8–12 years

How much does a Daniff cost?

Backyard breeders charge $1,000–$2,000 on average for Daniff puppies, but you should not buy a Daniff from a breeder. The only ethical way to acquire a Daniff is by adopting.

Do Great Dane Mastiff mixes shed?

Yes, but because most have very short fur it is not very noticeable.

Is a Daniff dog the same thing as a Mastidane?

Yes—two other common names for the Daniff are Mastidane and Great Daniff.

Meet Zeus, The Tallest Dog In The World https://rockykanaka.com/meet-zeus-the-tallest-dog-in-the-world/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 20:19:51 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=34684 World’s Tallest Living Dog Crowned by Guinness World Records

In a grand accolade from Guinness World Records, a Great Dane named Zeus has achieved the esteemed title of the world’s tallest living dog. Hailing from Bedford, Texas, this majestic two-year-old stands at an astonishing height of 1.046 meters (3 feet, 5.18 inches), solidifying his place as the reigning giant among canines.

Tallest Dog In The World

The official recognition was bestowed upon Zeus on March 22, following a meticulous measurement process conducted by his veterinarian to confirm his record-breaking stature.

???? Best Dog Food for Great Danes

Owner Brittany Davis, brimming with excitement, shared her lifelong dream of having a Great Dane named Zeus. Her dream came true when her brother gifted her the remarkable pup at the tender age of eight weeks. Initially apprehensive about Zeus’s immense size, Davis quickly found herself captivated by his presence, leading to an unbreakable bond.

Davis expressed to Guinness World Records:

“He’s been a big dog since we got him, even for a puppy. He had huge paws.”

Six Pounds Of Food Per Day!

Fueling Zeus’s colossal growth is a hearty diet consisting of 12 cups of “Gentle Giants” dog food daily, complemented by occasional treats like fried eggs and bully sticks. Yet, the true star of his culinary preferences is the humble ice cube.

Zeus’s larger-than-life persona has elevated him to local celebrity status, showered with admiration and treats whenever he graces the Dallas Farmer’s Market with his presence. Passersby are often struck by his enormity, prompting playful queries like “Can I ride him?” and “Does he have a saddle?” Davis delightfully responds, denying such equine notions.

Great Danes trace their lineage to hunting dogs from the Middle Ages, as noted by the American Kennel Club. While their towering stature sets them apart from other breeds, their susceptibility to various health conditions and comparatively shorter lifespans underscores their uniqueness.

Tragically, the previous titleholder of tallest living dog, Freddy, an English Great Dane passed away at the age of eight last year. With measurements of 3 feet, 4 inches (103.5 centimeters) from foot to withers and an impressive 7 feet, 5.5 inches (226 centimeters) when standing on his hind legs, Freddy made an indelible mark on the world of extraordinary canines.

Tallest Living Dog vs. World’s Tallest Dog

Zeus holds the record for World’s Tallest LIVING dog. The record for World’s Tallest Dog (alive or not) goes to another remarkable Great Dane also named Zeus, hailing from Otsego, Michigan, United States.

This canine legend etched his name into the annals of history by securing the title of the “world’s tallest dog” in both the 2012 and 2013 editions of the Guinness Book of World Records. He stood at 3 feet, 10 inches (111.8 centimeters).

Zeus was not only a giant, but also a gentle and loving companion to his owners, Kevin and Denise Doorlag. He enjoyed playing with his canine siblings, going for walks, and snuggling on the couch. He also visited schools and hospitals as a therapy dog, spreading joy and smiles to everyone he met.

Sadly, Zeus passed away in 2014 at the age of five, but his legacy lives on as an example of how extraordinary dogs can be. He will always be remembered as the world’s tallest dog ever!

2. Bonnie

3. Archie

Meet Archie Padfoot Corrigan or just Archie for short. Archie is exactly 50% Great Dane and 50% Poodle who grew up to look a little bit like an Irish Wolfhound! 4. Captain Marvel

Marvel is a Great Danoodle from Chicago whose parents were a purebred Great Dane and a purebred Poodle. A big, beautiful girl, Marvel grew up fast and was 90 lbs at just 11 months old! Marvel’s unique merle pattern comes from her Great Dane parentage and gives her those beautiful speckles and areas of tri-coloring with gray, white, and black fur.

5. Duke

a Great Danoodle Dog
Source: @DukeTheGreatDanoodle

Duke lives in Gateshead, UK near lots of places to explore outside. Whether it’s trotting through the woods or romping on the beach, Duke is always up for some fun! A lover of humans and dogs, the photo above is of Duke with one of his Staffordshire Bull Terrier friends. To give you an idea of Duke’s size, Staffordshire Bull Terriers typically stand at about 16 inches high, max.

Great Danoodle Basic Info

The Great Danoodle is a relatively new “designer” mixed breed dog that falls into the Doodle category—dogs whose parentage includes Poodle mixed with one or more additional breeds. Great Danoodles are mixes of Great Danes (one of the world’s largest dog breeds) and Standard Poodles. Rare, and usually the result of backyard breeders or accidental litters of puppies, Great Danoodles aren’t a breed you’ll see often.

Great Danoodle Temperament

Breed can be a decent indicator of a dog’s personality and temperament. However, with an unregulated and non-standardized mixed-breed like the Great Danoodle, it can be tough to use breed to predict temperament. This said, there are some common traits shared by both Great Danes and Poodles that also apply to Great Danoodles.

  • Loving and affection to family members
  • Good with children
  • Very playful
  • Extreme vigilance and protectiveness
  • Moderately high energy
  • Require lots of mental stimulation

Great Danoodle Size

When you combine a Standard Poodle (large) with a Great Dane (extra large), you get—you guessed it—a really big dog! Because Great Danoodles are a mix and not a standardized breed, there is some pretty significant variety in the sizes of these dogs.

Most Great Danoodles grow to weigh between 80—120 lbs, and reach heights of around 23—29 inches.

Remember that full grown Great Danes can reach 175+ lbs, and stand as tall as 32 inches, so don’t be surprised if your Danoodle takes up a lot of space.

Great Danoodle Health

Great Danes are known for having a variety of health issues, and are one of the shortest lived breeds. With a life expectancy of just 7—10 years, size is in part to blame for the poor health of Great Danes and Dane mixes.

“It is essential to keep in mind that Great Danes alone are very susceptible to having some health issues. This can cost you a lot of money to treat and can shorten their short life span,” says Lisa from Lover Doodles. A long-time Doodle dog owner, Lisa loves to talk about all things Poodle mix, including the pros and cons of owning Danoodles. “They are more likely to suffer from heart problems because of their size. Also, they often suffer from bone and joint issues.”

Where to Find a Great Danoodle

Because most Danoodles are the result of backyard breeding programs, it’s best not to try to buy one from a breeder. Instead, if you’ve fallen in love with this giant mixed breed, consider searching for rescue groups near you that specialize in Poodles, Great Danes, or Doodles. You might get lucky and find a Great Danoodle, or meet a different mix you fall in love with.

Here’s a quick list of rescues, but we recommend doing your own research to find more resources in your region.

Great Danoodle FAQ

How big do Great Danoodles get?

Adult Great Danoodles are typically between 23—29 inches tall, and weigh between 80—120 lbs.

Do Great Dane Doodles shed?

Yes! In fact, despite their Poodle ancestry, some Great Danoodles are heavy shedders that drop more fur and dander than the average dog.

What is a Goldendoodle Great Dane mix called?

There is no official name for a dog whose parentage includes both a Goldendoodle (a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle) and Great Dane. However, if we follow ordinary naming conventions for Doodle type dogs, these pups would be called Golden Danoodles, Great Golden Doodles, or something similar.

What is a Danoodle dog?

A Danoodle dog is a mix of Great Dane and Poodle, though they some have additional breeds in their ancestral background.

Where can I find Great Danoodle puppies for sale near me?

Unfortunately, it’s basically impossible to find a reputable or ethical Great Danoodle breeder. Great Danoodles are not an actual breed, and are usually produced by backyard and home breeders with little experience or knowledge. Because of this, it’s not good practice to purchase Great Danoodles or similar “designer” mixed breed puppies from breeders. Instead, adopt don’t shop!

Is the Great Danoodle hypoallergenic?

No! No dogs are hypoallergenic, even Poodles and Doodles that are sometimes marketed as being allergen-free.

What is a Mini Great Danoodle?

A Mini Great Danoodle is a mix of Great Dane and Miniature Poodle, however this is not an official breed.

What is Great Danoodle life expectancy?

Great Danoodles can be expected to live between 7—12 years.

Great Dane Nutritional Needs

Great Danes have specific nutritional needs due to their large size and high activity level. Some key considerations for feeding a Great Dane include:

  • Protein: Look for a diet that is made with high-quality animal protein sources, such as chicken, beef, or fish.
  • Calories: Great Danes are large dogs and they need a lot of calories to support their size and activity level.
  • Fat: Look for a diet that is made with healthy fats, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil.
  • Vitamins and minerals: Choose a diet that is fortified with vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium, phosphorus, Iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, and B-complex vitamins.
  • Avoiding certain ingredients: Great Danes may be sensitive to certain ingredients, such as corn, wheat, and soy, which can cause allergies and other health problems.

Great Dane Health Concerns

As a giant breed, Great Danes have several health concerns. Fortunately, pup parents can get ahead of many of these with good nutrition and proper care. Some common health concerns for Great Danes include:

  • Hip and elbow dysplasia
  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV or “bloat”)
  • Heart conditions
  • Hypothyroidism

6 Best Dog Foods for Great Danes

Now that we know a little more about what Great Danes need to stay happy and healthy, let’s take a look at our top dog food brand picks.

1. Best Raw: We Feed Raw Venison Formula

We Feed Raw is one of our favorite raw dog food brands thanks to their limited, high-quality ingredients. Each recipe is made primarily from animal proteins and includes an essential mix of vitamins and minerals.

Since Danes are sometimes prone to allergies, we recommend choosing a novel protein like venison, which is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. This formula also includes added Omega-3s to help enrich your Danes skin and coat while supporting healthy joints.

Best Dog Food for Great Danes FAQ

You’ve got more questions and we’ve got more answers! Here are some of the common questions asked by Great Dane lovers like you.

Do Great Danes need special food?

Great Danes may benefit from a diet that is specially formulated for large breeds, as these diets are typically designed to meet the unique nutritional and calorie needs of large dogs. Remember though, that the best dog food is the one that you can afford to feed your dog– at the end of the day, fed is best!

Is Purina a good dog food for Great Danes?

No. Purina might be a well-known dog brand, but it’s not one of our recommended options. Purina uses lots of filler ingredients including chicken and beef meal, corn, wheat, and soy.

Is Pedigree good for Great Danes?

Like Purina, Pedigree is a well-known brand that we don’t recommend for Great Danes. Made from low-quality ingredients and formulated with lots of filler, Pedigree is only recommended for people with extreme cost restrictions.

What is the best dog food for Great Dane to gain weight?

Before you decide that your Great Dane needs to gain weight, talk to your vet. When a giant breed carries too much weight, it can have significant joint problems that make it difficult and painful for them to move. Their bodies already have to do a lot of work just because of their natural size, and your vet’s expert opinion is very important for your Great Dane’s health.

If your Great Dane really does need to gain weight, you can try adding toppers to their regular food for additional calories. Freeze-dried nuggets are a great way to add more calories to their regular diet. You can also go for a raw diet; the raw diet I recommended has more than 700 calories per pound, which will help your underweight Great Dane pack on the pounds.

What is the best dog food for Great Danes with skin allergies?

In dogs, one of the most common causes of skin allergies is certain ingredients in their food, such as corn, wheat, or soy. Based on your vet’s recommendation, grain-free food might be the best option for your Great Dane with skin allergies.

What is the best dog food for Great Dane with diarrhea?

The best food for Great Dane with loose stools is usually homemade dog food. Offer small amounts of a bland, easily digestible diet., like boiled white rice mixed with boiled chicken or lean ground beef.

If your Great Dane continues to have diarrhea after a few days or you start seeing other signs of illness, you need to talk to your vet. It could be a sign of something more serious going on. This type of food is also the best food for Great Dane puppy with sensitive stomach.

What is the best dog food for Great Dane puppies?

Great Dane puppies need food with a lot of calories and nutrients so that they can grow. A Great Dane puppy grows a LOT in the first few years and needs food that can support their growing body. The best dog food for Great Dane puppy varies based on your particular pup’s needs and what you feel comfortable with feeding.

Want to know our recommendations for German Shepherd puppies; they are both big breeds that grow a lot and have similar nutritional needs.

Great Dane Is Escape Artist With Severe Separation Anxiety https://rockykanaka.com/great-dane-separation-anxiety/ Thu, 23 Jun 2022 22:28:53 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=11708 Tofu the great dane sepration anxiety

Jordann Alyse (Tofu’s foster):
He was like on organizers and cabinets. He was trying to get out of the window, like there’s no way we could keep him crated because he would hurt himself, because he was definitely a practice escape artist. Eventually he learned how to open the sliding door, like really quickly and then would just jump over.

I’ll Right back. Nope. Don’t don’t don’t don’t

Rocky:
This Great Dane’s separation anxiety stems from an ordeal he dealt with at his former home.

Jordann Alyse (Tofu’s foster):
Tofu was brought into the rescue as the sort of pet of a backyard breeder. Tofu just kept getting out like he would get out like every day break outta the mobile home. He would just be roaming the city and it was just getting really dangerous. And she finally agreed to surrender him and we took him in to the rescue and that’s when they reach out to me to foster him and he started off really skinny. His elbows all had those really bad scabs and just, he had wounds on his body like puncture wounds as if he had gotten into like a fight with another dog or something. But he was just so sweet and just really just wanted comfort. Super clung to my side was like not super confident, really kind of just a good dog.

Rocky:
Little by little Tofu got the help he needed from his foster family including his sister Zoot who watched over him constantly.

Tofu the great dane with his sister Zoot

Jordann Alyse (Tofu’s foster):
Anytime we get a less confident Great Dane as a foster, we just kind of stick her with them and she kind of shows them the ropes. She would just watch it like we would watch them both in the camera. She would just watch him like getting into trouble and like trying to like break out of things. But he really developed a bond with Zoot and love watching them in the camera, like he would rest his head on her or she would like nuzzle him while they were, you know, separated and sad, but really sweet. Definitely like a sister figure. Yeah.

Rocky:
After about a month of care and love Tofu was ready for his new home.

Jordann Alyse (Tofu’s foster):
I actually met Jack on Facebook. I started a Great Danes of Pensacola page and Jack was always commenting on the rescues like pages that I would share. And I had posted a bunch of times about Tofu and I was like, I can’t believe no one’s interested in him yet. I guess like maybe just the great dane separation anxiety is kind of scaring people off.

Yeti and his adopter

Jack Wilson (Tofu’s Adopter):
And when I saw that my heart just broke and I immediately told my family, we could talk about it, but it’s done. We’re applying yeah, we, we have to apply for this puppy.

Rocky:
Now he’s living his best life with his new family. He even got a new name. Yeti.

Jack Wilson (Yeti’s Adopter):
Yeti is my everything. I mean the, the fact that it’s extremely heartbreaking to think about what happened to him and to see him in the condition that he was in. So Yeti to me is like, I, I feel fulfilled. Like I have so much to give and I have so much care and love and time. And he’s what fulfills me. He’s the, what makes me whole, and fortunately I know that with everything that had happened and everything that he needed, like I’ve done that for him too. Again one big happy family.
