Denni’s owner, Steve Lamplough, shared the adorable story in his local community Facebook group, explaining how he rushed outside after hearing his dogs barking, only to find a tiny koala clinging to Denni’s back. It was a sight so unexpected and pure that even Steve couldn’t believe his eyes.
An Unlikely Friendship That Stole Hearts Across Australia
When Steve stepped outside, Denni came running toward him, tail wagging, with a tiny koala clinging happily to her back. Both looked completely at ease, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
In the photos Steve shared, Denni beams proudly at the camera while the baby koala hangs on tightly, its little arms wrapped around her neck.
It was a surprising yet utterly heart-melting sight. Steve gently lifted the koala and placed it on a nearby tree, hoping its mother would come to find it. Later that day, he confirmed that an adult koala had indeed returned to collect her baby.
Thankfully, both animals were safe, and what began as a shocking scene turned into a story of pure, innocent friendship between two unlikely Australian neighbors.
A Golden Retriever, a Koala, and Pure Joy
Lamplough’s post about the adorable encounter quickly melted hearts online, racking up over 9,000 likes and hundreds of shares.
According to People, Lamplough shared how unforgettable the moment was. While he’s spotted koalas around his property before, he’d never seen one this close, let alone hitching a ride on his dog’s back!
“It was quite amazing to see,” he said with a laugh. “Especially when Denni was running and the little koala was bobbing up and down like a tiny jockey.”
Lamplough added that his dogs are usually curious about koalas, but this was a first: “They’ve never been that friendly before.”
It was a one-of-a-kind moment that captured just how gentle and open-hearted dogs can be, even when their new friend happens to be a wild baby koala.
Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka shared his thoughts on the adorable encounter, saying that “moments like this remind us of how boundless a dog’s heart can be — they see connection beyond species. Denni’s friendship with the koala is pure love in action.”
