As narrated by his owner @maddisonhansonn on TikTok, Nash’s woes began on a random day when he was outside playing without a care in the world. His family noticed him limping after this play session, but there was nothing alarming about his behavior. Nash still seemed cheerful, strong, and energetic. At first, Nash’s owners were hopeful that the lump would shrink and disappear on its own. Unfortunately, the opposite happened. Instead of shrinking, this tiny bump grew bigger with every passing day.

A Life-Changing Decision

Worried about Nash’s growing lump, his family rushed him to the vet for answers. What they never expected was that this vet visit would come with a devastating diagnosis. After examining Nash and running tests, the vets discovered he had Grade 3 Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS) on his limping leg. 

Since the cancer was already in its most aggressive grade, the only option was to amputate Nash’s leg to prevent the cancer from spreading to other parts of his body. Surgery was necessary to save his life. 

Recovery Struggles

Thankfully, Nash’s surgery was a success. But his recovery and adjustment period were anything but easy. 

During the early days after surgery, Nash struggled to adjust to life without four legs. Everything about his body felt unfamiliar, as he experienced trouble walking, standing, and maintaining balance. His new reality also affected his confidence. Nash couldn’t understand why moving around freely wasn’t normal anymore. But through it all, his family gave him the physical and emotional support he needed to adjust to a tripod lifestyle.

As days went by, Nash began to gain confidence to take the next step, even when it felt hard.

Nash’s Inspiring Transformation

It’s been over a month since Nash got his leg amputated. Amazingly, he’s no longer the unsure, heartbroken pup that he was during the initial days after surgery. Nash has already adapted to life with three legs. He now runs, walks, and plays without hesitation. Above all, his confidence and joyful personality are shining through like never before. 

Nash embraces each day with the same gratitude and enthusiasm he had before his life took a hit. While he may have lost a leg, he never lost the core of who he is: a playful pup who’s full of life.

Gracie’s entire tongue hangs out on the side of her mouth; you’d at first mistake it for a long, soft pink ribbon. Some find it oddly cute, others chuckle when they see it because of how adorably funny it looks. What people don’t know is that Gracie’s tongue isn’t just a mere quirky feature; it tells a fierce story of survival. Gracie is a survivor of the deadly canine distemper, which is what led to her tongue slipping out of position permanently. 

Gracie’s Near-Death Battle  

Gracie was a young puppy when she was rescued from horrible living conditions while under the care of a backyard breeder. Besides being dangerously malnourished, Gracie had, sadly, contracted distemper by the time rescuers came to her aid.

In most cases, backyard breeders hardly adhere to vaccination protocols, putting their dogs at risk of contracting potentially fatal diseases like canine distemper. This is what happened with Gracie.

The disease caused her unimaginable pain, and she’d experience worrying symptoms such as pooping blood, teeth loss, and constant neurological muscle spams. Lucky for Gracie, her rescue led her to a loving foster family (now her forever home) that ensured she received the best possible treatment and care to pull through.

Given how deadly distemper is, the vet team tending to Gracie couldn’t promise whether she’d make it. Nobody had much hope that Gracie would bounce back, but this lovely Golden made sure to defy all odds. 

A Wiggling Warrior

Sadly, distemper destroyed Gracie’s teeth as well as the nerves and muscles in her mouth that held her tongue in position. Not even surgery could fix Grace’s tongue situation; the damage was irreversible.

Even though her tongue now flaps freely outside her mouth, the big picture is that Gracie overcame a health battle that most puppies never survive from. She went from a dog staring death up close to being a living miracle of what resilience looks like. Now, Gracie is making the most out of her second chance at life with the family that stayed by her side even when her situation seemed hopeless. She’s a cherished pet who’ll never know she’s different, and that’s because she’s part of a family that treats her like a gem.

Distemper in Dogs: What You Should Know 

The American Veterinary Medical Association defines canine distemper as a highly infectious viral disease that attacks a dog’s nervous system, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal system. Canine distemper is preventable through vaccination, which is why unvaccinated puppies and adult dogs are greatly susceptible to this disease. 

The canine distemper virus is mostly spread through airborne exposure (when a distemper-infected dog coughs, sneezes, or barks near a non-infected dog), sharing of food &water bowls between infected and non-infected dogs, and through the placenta (a pregnant, infected dog can pass the virus to the unborn puppies). 

Canine distemper has no known cure. Treatment interventions for this contagious viral disease often include the administration of intravenous fluids and medications to manage symptoms as well as prevent secondary infections. According to findings by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, canine distemper has a mortality rate of 80% in puppies and 50% in adult dogs. Thankfully, this virus isn’t transmissible to humans.

On the other hand, timid or fearful dogs might act cautiously and, while they may try to protect, they aren’t usually reliable as guard dogs, since fear can sometimes lead to unpredictable reactions.

Denni’s owner, Steve Lamplough, shared the adorable story in his local community Facebook group, explaining how he rushed outside after hearing his dogs barking, only to find a tiny koala clinging to Denni’s back. It was a sight so unexpected and pure that even Steve couldn’t believe his eyes.

An Unlikely Friendship That Stole Hearts Across Australia

When Steve stepped outside, Denni came running toward him, tail wagging, with a tiny koala clinging happily to her back. Both looked completely at ease, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. 

In the photos Steve shared, Denni beams proudly at the camera while the baby koala hangs on tightly, its little arms wrapped around her neck.

It was a surprising yet utterly heart-melting sight. Steve gently lifted the koala and placed it on a nearby tree, hoping its mother would come to find it. Later that day, he confirmed that an adult koala had indeed returned to collect her baby.

According to People, Lamplough shared how unforgettable the moment was. While he’s spotted koalas around his property before, he’d never seen one this close, let alone hitching a ride on his dog’s back!

“It was quite amazing to see,” he said with a laugh. “Especially when Denni was running and the little koala was bobbing up and down like a tiny jockey.”

Lamplough added that his dogs are usually curious about koalas, but this was a first: “They’ve never been that friendly before.”

It was a one-of-a-kind moment that captured just how gentle and open-hearted dogs can be, even when their new friend happens to be a wild baby koala.

“So when we brought Eiger home, Rex was not having it,” Michelle recalls. “He started acting like a jealous brother. He wanted to sit in our laps, he started crying a lot—things he never used to do. Despite the rocky introduction, Michelle and her boyfriend were determined to give Rex a companion. “From the very beginning, I knew I wanted him to have a playmate,” Michelle explains. “I think dogs just do better in life when they have a companion.”

Training & Routine Brought Them Together

Eiger, a timid puppy, was initially overwhelmed by Rex’s size and energy. But Michelle and her boyfriend leaned on training and daily routines to bridge the gap.

“The training was one of the biggest things that solidified their bond,” Michelle said. “Rex already knew basic commands, so we would show Eiger that Rex was doing them. Eiger picked up on them quickly and started to look at Rex as a big brother.”

Walking the two dogs together also helped. “They began to realize their daily routine was always going to be done side by side. Once Rex understood Eiger wasn’t there to replace him, but to be with him, he settled down. From there, Eiger started to initiate play, and it just grew into best friends forever.”

From Jealousy to Devotion

Within a few months, the change in Rex was undeniable. “After about the two-to-three-month mark, Rex started grooming Eiger a lot,” Michelle said. “It was like his way of saying, ‘I want to take care of him. I want to protect him.’”

One of Michelle’s favorite moments came when she caught Rex joining Eiger in his crate—a safe space the Dalmatian normally kept to himself. “That was the moment we knew they weren’t just coexisting—they were truly bonded,” she explained.

A Perfect Pair

Today, Rex and Eiger are inseparable. “They’re complete opposites, but they work so well together,” Michelle said with a smile. “Eiger calms down Rex, and Rex helps bring out Eiger’s playful side. The love they have for each other is just so special to see.”

When Trauma Holds You Back..

Having lived in a puppy mill his whole life, Bruce had never seen a staircase, let alone used one. So when he found one in his new home, fear took over the very first day.

Bruce couldn’t get past how overwhelmingly strange, scary, and confusing the stairs looked before his eyes. Even though his new family tried to gently reassure him to follow them upstairs, Bruce just couldn’t find the confidence to do so. What Nala Wants You to Know About Service Dogs

But Nala isn’t just a Disney fan. She’s also a working dog. For Nala, this means providing physical support and keeping a watchful eye over her mom. Zazu, meanwhile, is actively training to be just like Nala.

As service dogs, both Nala and Zazu are allowed into far more places than regular dogs. They are legally protected and can accompany Meg into restaurants, theaters, and (of course) theme parks. This isn’t some sort of special perk, though. It’s part of their job. It also sets them apart from emotional support animals, who may or may not be allowed into different venues at the owner’s discretion.

What is a Service Dog?

So, what is a service dog? A service dog is a working pet. Depending on the individual owner’s needs, service dogs can do a variety of different tasks. While many service dogs have overlapping skill sets and may serve multiple roles, the job of a service animal is broken down into a few basic categories:

• Guide dogs assist visually impaired owners.
• Hearing dogs assist hearing-impaired owners.
• Mobility dogs provide physical support by picking up items, pressing buttons, opening doors, and so on.
• Psychiatric support dogs share a role with emotional support animals, though their duties are often more specific.
• Medical alert dogs keep watch and alert owners when they sense an impending emergency, such as a seizure or diabetic attack.

The Difference Between Service Dogs and Emotional Support Animals

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service dogs are classified as working animals, not pets. This means that they are allowed into areas where pets are not. For instance, you can’t take your standard dog into a restaurant, but a service dog is legally required to be permitted entry.

This isn’t to be taken lightly or to be used as some sneaky workaround to get your puppy to rest under the table at California Pizza Kitchen. Service dogs provide legitimate and essential support for their owners. These pups are highly trained to be calm under pressure, even in loud and chaotic situations. Emotional support animals, however, often have less rigorous training. Moreover, they are not protected under the same legal framework.

In the simplest sense, a service dog is unique in its training. While emotional support animals and therapy dogs are able to provide comfort to many, a service dog is specifically trained to help a singular individual.

Where Do Service Dogs Come From?

The most common avenue for obtaining a service dog is through a certified trainer. These expert handlers raise their dogs from puppies and begin training immediately. These are highly specialized animals whose disposition, determination, and willingness to please have set them above the rest. In fact, standards are so high among professional trainers that anywhere from 50–75% of pups become regular pets.

After training these dogs, the trainers will do the paperwork and handle the fees required to legally recognize their pups as working dogs. All of this work is ultimately passed onto the client. While there are plenty of nonprofit service dog training organizations, private for-profit ventures will charge around $25,000 for a service dog.

The Fake Service Dog Problem

While legitimate service dogs come with their own legal paperwork, it’s disturbingly easy to purchase a service dog vest online. With these, some unscrupulous individuals force their poorly trained pooches into public venues, which ultimately harms and undermines the legitimacy of true service dogs.

You can help! Keep others educated. You don’t need to demand papers from every service dog owner; the behavior of a true service dog is easy to spot. As opposed to the fake service dogs, true service animals exhibit a few key traits:

• Extreme focus, even in overwhelming situations
• Keen obedience skills
• The ability to perform complex tasks, such as pressing buttons or opening doors
• Obedience far above what a standard dog would know
• Knowledge of complex commands

Moreover, remember that a service dog is a service dog. Therapy dogs and emotional support animals do not qualify for any of the protections offered to a service dog.
