A Dachshund Was Thrown From a Rolling Car And Survived. What Happened Next Is Unbelievable https://rockykanaka.com/a-dachshund-was-thrown-from-a-rolling-car-and-survived-what-happened-next-is-unbelievable/ Tue, 25 Nov 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=131647 A little dachshund named Chewie has become a miracle in the rescue community after surviving seven days alone in the rugged Wyoming wilderness. According to People, the 3-year-old pup was thrown from his family’s car during a horrific crash on I-80, a collision so violent it sent the vehicle rolling three times and claimed the life of their cat, Newt. (Watch Video Below)

His parents, Amanda Lohr and her boyfriend, believed Chewie had died on impact. But while they were recovering in the hospital, Chewie was out there fighting to stay alive, proving just how strong and determined a tiny dog can be.

A Heartbreaking Crash and a Loss That Felt Final

Lohr was rushed to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, while her boyfriend was airlifted to Casper with a fractured neck, spending eight days in recovery. Amid the chaos and heartbreak, the couple learned that their cat, Newt, hadn’t survived, and Chewie, thrown from the car, was presumed gone as well. For more than a week, Lohr grieved the loss of her tiny companion while trying to process the trauma of the crash and its aftermath.

Then, out of nowhere, came a call revealing that Chewie was alive. “I was really happy because I had been mourning for more than a week,” Lohr shared, adding that her daughter cried tears of joy when she heard the news.

Chewie’s survival and rescue were thanks to the determination of complete strangers. A FedEx driver named Kenny Coomes first spotted the little dachshund wandering near I-80. When Chewie bolted from him in fear, Coomes didn’t give up. He returned with a live trap stocked with food and a blanket, hoping the frightened dog would find safety after days alone in the Wyoming wilderness.

Nearly a week after the crash, another couple happened to be driving the same lonely stretch of road near Elk Mountain. Scott and Kodi Allred were on their way to visit their son at the University of Northern Colorado when they spotted a terrified little black dachshund darting along the highway.

They pulled over immediately. After a brief chase, Scott managed to scoop the trembling pup into his arms, ending Chewie’s long, dangerous ordeal in the wilderness.

A Community’s Kindness Delivers a Dog Back to His Family

With no collar or tag, the Allreds drove an hour to the Humane Society in Laramie, where staff scanned him for a microchip. That simple scan changed everything. It revealed Chewie’s identity and connected him back to Lohr, who had already mourned him once.

“This is a miracle, and I am so happy he was found,” Amanda shared an update on Facebook. “That puppy is my best friend, and I can’t wait to have him back with me.”

The FedEx driver, Kenny, helped arrange Chewie’s journey home, coordinating with another FedEx driver who volunteered to transport the brave little dachshund back to his family. Kenny stated, “It was God who put everything in place so this could happen.”

Woman Dog-Proofs Her Entire Home for Her Blind Dachshund—Now Millions Are Tearing Up https://rockykanaka.com/woman-dog-proofs-her-entire-home-for-her-blind-dachshund-now-millions-are-tearing-up/ Tue, 13 May 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=113861 One of the best gifts you can offer a blind dog is the gift of comfort and safety. For most — if not all — visually-impaired dogs, feeling safe and comfortable goes beyond having the coziest bed or the tastiest meals. It’s more about being in an environment that feels predictable, in the sense that they know what to expect as they navigate their surroundings. (Watch the video below)

That’s where dog-proofing your home comes in.

One dog owner has left the internet impressed after showcasing the extent she’s gone to ensure her deaf & blind senior Dachshund moves safely and confidently around the house. Trust us, you’ll “aaaww” non-stop once you see how she’s intentionally dog-proofed her home for the sake of her 14-year-old pup.

What Intentional Dog-Proofing Looks Like

As shown in a TikTok video posted on the account @charcharbinksdachshund, this thoughtful owner has gone above and beyond to make her home a safe haven for her Doxie. Here are some of the ways she’s done this:

  • She’s wrapped plastic film around the bottom part of all her bar stools to protect her Doxie from getting trapped in the space between the stools’ legs.
  • She’s fenced her pool so that her Doxie can sunbathe outside without accidentally getting into the water.
  • She’s wrapped the bottom part of all concrete poles around her home with bubble wrap to prevent him from bumping into the poles.
  • She has installed a ramp and a doggie door to help him go in and out of the house with ease.

The Internet Can’t Get Enough

This heartwarming clip is a timely reminder that blind dogs don’t ask for much; just an environment that makes sense for them. So far, the video has racked up 1.6 million views and attracted thousands of heartfelt comments.

“Thank you for showing the saran wrap around the chairs. That’s a good idea. I’ve never thought of that for my blind dachshund,” one comment reads.

“Thank you for sharing this. I have a senior English Bulldog who is deaf and about 90% blind and we have done so much around the house to make him comfortable. But I love the bubble and plastic wrap,” another added.

“I’m so happy he has someone that cares for him so much,” a third person wrote.

Living With a Blind Dog: Other Dog-Proofing Tips & Tricks You Should Know

Visually-impaired dogs, too, can lead happy, fulfilling lives just like other sighted dogs. It all starts with how safe and confident they feel within their home environment. This is why dog-proofing your home when you have a blind dog shouldn’t be treated as an option; it’s essential.

If you don’t know where to begin, start by checking out the rooms your dog likes to frequent, one by one. Get down on all fours to get a proper view of potential hazards, obstacles, and sharp edges in every room from your pup’s eye level.

“A good place to start is the room or area of your home where your blind dog spends the most time. Go into that room and think about life from your dog’s perspective. What could they run into that might hurt them or damage them? Are you able to move that item or add something soft to it?” Pet Rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka advises.

Here are other helpful dog-proofing tips you can consider:

1. Keep Your Home Layout Consistent

Blind dogs rely heavily on their memory and other senses to map out your home layout. Therefore, it’s best to ensure your layout remains consistent to avoid stress and confusion. That means avoid constantly moving or rearranging things in the house and making frequent layout changes that could stress your dog.

2. Get a Halo

Another helpful way to help your blind pup navigate their surroundings with confidence is getting them a halo.

“The Halo is equivalent to a stick for blind humans, that acts as an alert perimeter device to let them know they are about to run into something. Not all dogs benefit from the use of the Halo, but it might be worth a shot if you’ve got a clumsy blind pup,” Rocky Kanaka says.

3. Use Textured Mats

You can also consider placing different textured mats in different areas of your house. Doing so allows your dog to tap on their sense of touch, and that way, they’re able to accurately associate the feeling of each rug with specific areas of your house.

“I have one for his food dish area, and inside and outside his dog doors. Once he touches it, you can tell he has a good bearing of where he is,” commented one user in a Reddit discussion on caring for a blind dog.

Mini Dachshund Vanishes Without a Trace—What His Family Discovered the Next Day Surprised Everyone https://rockykanaka.com/mini-dachshund-vanishes-without-a-trace-what-his-family-discovered-the-next-day-surprised-everyone/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=110737 Fred, the miniature Dachshund, had disappeared. His family was terrified and began their search immediately, frantically trying to locate their beloved dog. Hours passed and there was no sign of Fred, and his family was only growing more and more concerned. Soon it would be nightfall and Fred was still nowhere to be found.

Desperate to find the little dog, Fred’s family enlisted the help of friends and relatives to expand the hunt. How far could a little dog on short legs have gone? Could he be hiding somewhere? Or possibly stuck?

@alexandracorby Our minature dachshund went missing 😪 Fortunatley we were able to locate and save him ❤️. Never give up looking…🤧🥰 #dachshund #dogrescue #miniaturedachshund #lostdog #dogsoftiktok #dachshundlife #nevergiveup #helpdogs #savedog #savedogs ♬ Me Cry – NGOTUAN NGUYX

As the search stretched into the second day, Fred’s sleepless family had a hunch that he might still be missing because they were searching in the wrong place. They needed to go lower…they needed to search underground.

Dachshunds and miniature Dachshunds were bred to hunt burrowing game like badgers (Dachshund literally means “badger dog”) and rabbits. They have powerful front legs and paws that make them exceptional diggers, long bodies that help them worm their way into holes and burrows, and a keen sense of smell that allows them to track animals underground. A breed with high prey drive and a streak of stubborn attitude and determination, Dachshund owners know their dogs will stop at nothing to dig, chase, and seek out the source of interesting scents.

With all of this in mind, it should come as no surprise that Dachshunds occasionally get stuck underground.

Tearful Rescue with a Humorous Twist: Fred Shows Doxie-Tude

Mini Dachshund Vanishes Without a Trace—What His Family Discovered the Next Day Surprised Everyone

Drain cameras were brought in to search holes and animal burrows in the area and suddenly, they knew where Fred was! Deep in a hole underground, Fred had managed to get stuck after exploring it. Though relieved to have located their dog, Fred’s family knew he was still in danger and needed to be rescued.

Fred’s Dad got out a shovel and went to work, digging into the ground approximately where Fred was stuck to try to bring his dog to safety. It was hard work with lots of dirt to move, but after lots of sweat, he finally broke through. Ditching the shovel, Fred’s dad reached down to grab the little dog who, in classic Dachshund form, immediately nipped at his dad’s hand! Dachshund owners will know just how typical this is—goofy little dogs!

Moments later, Fred showed how truly grateful he was, snuggling up with his dad as a thank you. Looking no worse for wear, Fred was happy to see his family but did seem a little confused about what all the fuss was about.

How Does a Dachshund Get Stuck & Survive Underground?

Mini Dachshund Vanishes Without a Trace—What His Family Discovered the Next Day Surprised Everyone

Sometimes, Dachshunds can’t back their way out of a hole they’ve entered, have no room to turn around, or get wedged in an underground burrow. In especially dangerous circumstances, the tunnel the dog has dug can collapse behind them, trapping them with no access to air. Thankfully, most dogs stuck in holes—Fred—still have some fresh air flow and can survive for a short time without food or water.

Hunters who hunt with Dachshunds sometimes carry small shovels to help their dogs dig into burrows, but those shovels can also come in handy if their dog gets stuck.

Fluffy Dachshund 101: Get The Down-Low On This Short Fluffy Breed

Learning everything you can about a dog breed before you commit to it is the best way to set yourself and your future dog up for success. Dachshunds may be small dogs, but they are also hounds, once bred primarily to hunt badgers and rabbits in the German countryside. Today, Dachshunds have become beloved family pets, but they may not be the right choice for a first-time dog owner—Dachshunds are strong-willed, curious, and sometimes troublemakers.

History and Origins of Fluffy Dachshunds

The Dachshund (sometimes called a Wiener Dog to describe the breed’s long, sausage-like body) originates in Germany where it was bred as a hunting dog specializing in badger hunting. The breed we know today descends from generations of hunting dogs, with some historians claiming the Dachshund began to take form as early as the 15th century. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, German hunters and dog breeders were breeding Dachshunds in earnest, creating a breed that was compact and could dig and fit into small spaces—like badger burrows—but was also strong and could dispatch prey.

The miniature Dachshund was created later to address an overpopulation of rabbits. The smaller Dachshunds could fit into the tight rabbit burrows, and proved just as talented as their larger cousins.

Modern Dachshunds still work as hunting dogs, but many live happily as family pets and companions. Still, these little dogs retain the determined, sometimes ferocious temperament needed for the hard work of hunting badgers and rabbits.

Fluffy Dachshund Temperament & Personality Traits

Dachshunds are cheeky and independent little dogs who like to rule the roost, so to speak. Very set to their schedules and happy to enforce the schedule by barking their owners into submission, Dachshunds are vocal and stubborn, though delightfully funny to observe as they patrol the home.

Curious and friendly, Dachshunds are often playful and happy to go on adventures with their humans. Very affectionate with their families, they can be briefly nervous with strangers, but tend to warm up quickly.

Because they are spunky and quick to react to enforce their own rules and boundaries, Dachshunds are not recommended for families with small children, but they often do well with older children and teenagers. Like any breed, children and Dachshunds should not be left alone together and adults should always be supervising. Typically friendly with other dogs, Dachshunds may not appreciate dog parks or meeting lots of dogs, since they are small and can be bossy.

Intelligent and trainable with lots of positive reinforcement, Dachshunds aren’t the most obedient breed, and require patient, experienced ownership. Energetic and sometimes prone to boredom, Dachshunds need moderate levels of exercise and plenty of mental stimulation. Truly a miniature hunting dog, Dachshunds are cheerful and goofy little dogs with fearless hearts of gold.

How Big Do They Get? Standard vs Mini Fluffy Wiener Dog

Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature. Both can be long-haired or short-haired, and people often call the long-haired standard and mini Dachshund “fluffy” to describe their voluminous coats!

Standard Dachshunds can be almost three times heavier than miniature Dachshunds, and the size difference is significant enough to tell the two sizes apart easily. Look at Ladybug, the miniature Fluffy dachshund walking next to her human—she’s so little, almost the same size as that shoe!

Potential Health Problems for Fluffy Dachshund

Dachshunds are generally healthy dogs, but are prone to several very serious health issues related to their body type. Because of their long backs and short legs, Dachshunds can injure themselves easily, and back problems and joint issues are common in the breed. Preventing injury and being conscious of your dog’s movements as a Dachshund owner is important, but time consuming.

“I have two Dachshunds…I absolutely love their spunky personalities. That being said, sometimes they just feel like a lot of work,” says a Reddit comment from a Dachshund owner describing what it’s like managing a Dachshund’s health and safety. “We carry ours up and down the stairs to prevent them from falling or injuring their backs, and we have dog stairs and ramps that are hardly used no matter how much we train. You can’t feed them too many treats or they’ll gain too much weight (which puts them at more risk for back injuries).

Other health issues to be aware of if you own a fluffy Dachshund include:

  • Ear infections
  • Eye and vision issues (e.g. cataracts)
  • Joint issues (e.g. luxating patella)
  • Back injuries (e.g. intervertebral disc disease)
  • Bloat
  • Heart problems
  • Unwanted weight gain

Where To Buy & Adopt Fluffy Dachshund Puppies

If you aren’t yet convinced you need an adorable fluffy Wiener Dog, this ethereal, almost trance-inducing video might be your final straw. “You have to stop pretending you don’t want a Wiener Dog,” the voiceover says. “They have short legs and long bodies, and they make our lives better!” I mean, look at that adorable dapple Dachshund, fluffy, goofy, just happy to be there…what could be better?

In all seriousness, if you’ve got your heart set on a long-haired Dachshund, there are many ways to find your perfect dog. Before you choose a breeder, I encourage you to search for a fluffy Dachshund for adoption first. Why not consider a puppy like Bazooka—a 3-month-old Dachshund x Pomeranian mix with gorgeous multi-colored fur?

“Bazooka is a fluffy mama’s boy who knows just how handsome he is and he can’t wait to show it!” says DPS Rescue in their description of this adorable fluffy Dachshund mix puppy. “Bazooka’s tail never stops wagging as he goes about his day…Everything Bazooka encounters is his new favorite thing, even if it’s the same kibble he eats every day. Bazooka also loves cuddling and he will place a little paw on your arm as you snuggle him in close.”

Bazooka is available for adoption through DPS Rescue in Sun City, California, but there are adoptable long-haired Dachshunds and Dachshund mixes around the country.

You don’t have to adopt or buy a puppy, either! Adult dogs need homes too, and adopting an adult dog vs a puppy has lots of advantages.

Winnie is available for adoption with PAW Estate Rescue in Visalia, California, and she’s good with other dogs and kids!

Fluffy Wiener Dog FAQ

You could spend years learning about the fluffy Dachshund and still have more to learn. To help round out your knowledge for now, here’s what other people are asking about the long-haired Wiener Dog.

Is grooming long-haired Dachshunds difficult?

It can be difficult and time-consuming to groom a long-haired Dachshunds coat. Finding a trusted professional dog groomer if you own a long-haired Dachshund can save you lots of time and effort, and give your dog a more positive experience while being groomed.

What are fluffy tea cup Wiener Dogs?

“Teacup” Wiener Dogs are purebred miniature Dachshunds that have been deliberately bred down in size to be under six pounds. Teacup is not an official Dachshund size, and many teacup dogs (including fluffy tea cup Wiener Dogs) have serious genetic and congenital health issues due to unethical breeding practices that prioritize size over health.

Do standard or miniature long-haired Dachshunds do well in apartments?

Sometimes. There aren’t enormous space requirements for owning a Dachshund, but Dachshunds like to bark, and might not be a good choice for apartment living for that reason.

How Rabbit Overpopulation Gave Us The Mini Dachshund https://rockykanaka.com/mini-dachshund/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 20:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=65504 Perhaps the world’s smallest true hunting dog, the miniature Dachshund wasn’t always a fashionable purse dog. Miniature Dachshunds were bred for one specific purpose, and it is in some ways a lucky accident that we still have this lively little breed today.

The perfect miniature of the standard Dachshund, mini Dachshunds are identical to their larger cousins in almost every way…just, smaller. Courageous, bright, and friendly, the mini Dachshund is a delightful and sometimes comical dog, but the right environment can quickly bring out their instincts to chase. If you’re hoping for a little dog to lounge on your lap all day, the mini Dachshund probably isn’t it, but this breed will keep you entertained and on your toes!

Mini Dachshund

If you’ve been considering bringing a miniature Dachshund into your home and need some definitive answers to your questions, you’ve found the right place. I’m going over all the basics plus sharing resources for reputable breeders and mini Dachshund rescue groups, the differences between standard and mini Dachshunds, and much more.

Meet 6 Mini Dachshunds from Instagram

Social media is always one of my first resources for learning about a new dog breed. Connecting with dog owners who have hands-on experience with my breed of interest is one of the fastest ways to learn what life looks like with that dog. If you’re in your mini Dachshund-obsession era, I recommend taking to Instagram and giving these and other mini Doxie accounts a follow!

1. Wilbur & Palmer

Wilbur and Palmer are a pair of longhaired cream mini Dachshunds from Washington state who love traveling, hiking, and spending time with their humans! Long-haired mini Dachshunds require a little more grooming than short-haired mini Doxies, but the upkeep isn’t extensive.

2. Ginger

Mini Dachshund

Little Ginger is a mini wire haired Dachshund from Manila in the Philippines where her humans take her on lots of walks and adventures in her doggy stroller! Ginger is just under one year old but is already excellent on the leash and turning into the center of humans’ worlds. Wirehaired Dachshunds have coarser fur than longhaired and shorthaired Doxies, and they have a double coat.

Mini Dachshund Basic Info

Miniature Dachshunds are the same breed as standard Dachshunds, which have bred for more than 600 years. Mini Dachshunds began to appear in the early 19th century when Germany had a startling surge in their rabbit population. Standard Dachshunds had been used for centuries to pursue game like foxes and badgers. Their long but low bodies were perfect for burrowing into underground dens, and their tenacious prey-drive helped their humans easily tail their targets.

However, when rabbits and their burrows began to invade the German countryside, hunters and farmers discovered that their standard Dachshunds were too large to get into the rabbit nests. Enter the miniature Dachshund—deliberately bred to be small while retaining the personality, prey drive, and athleticism of the standard variety, miniature Dachshunds were perfectly-sized for the job of rabbit dispatch.

Today, miniature Dachshunds are one of the top ten most popular dog breeds in the U.S. Most commonly a family dog, some mini Dachshunds still chase small game for their humans while others feel perfectly comfortable being pampered.

Mini Dachshund Temperament

Mini Dachshund

Miniature Dachshunds are lively, curious, and stubborn little dogs whose big personalities are apparent even from a young age. Intelligent and eager-to-please, miniature Dachshunds love to play games, do obedience training, and participate in all family activities. Mini Dachshunds have the ability to pick up on training quickly, but they may not always have the desire. Notoriously hard to potty train, mini Dachshunds aren’t the right breed for new or inexperienced pet parents.

“My [mini Dachshund] will be a year old soon. I found training commands to be fairly easy as my pup loves the attention of his people, so he gets really into it when he gets going. Training out undesirable behaviours on the other hand has been more difficult,” says a mini Dachshund owner’s comment on a Reddit thread. “I think we have inadvertently rewarded some of his behaciours with attention which he finds very rewarding. I think they just need more patience and consistency than some other dog [breeds] as they are very strong willed. He didn’t really get the hang of [potty training] until 9–10 months I’d say.”

A vocal dog breed, miniature Dachshunds are prone to barking both to alert their humans and to entertain themselves. Similarly, mini Dachshunds are known to be mischievous, particularly if left alone for long periods or not physically exercised or mentally stimulated enough. While it is possible for mini Dachshunds to be good apartment dogs, you’ll need to work diligently to teach your dog to not be disruptive to your neighbors.

Active, athletic, and playful, mini Dachshunds have moderate activity levels and need at least 30–60 minutes of exercise per day in addition to regular walks, training, games/puzzles, and play time. While they may like to run, it’s important to closely monitor your mini Dachshund for their safety since some do not know their limits and can inadvertently injure themselves.

Brave and protective of their humans, mini Dachshunds can sometimes be impulsive when presented with a perceived threat. These small dogs will be quick to defend their humans, their homes, and themselves, and can be reactive towards strangers and other animals. By contrast, mini Dachshunds are often very social and affectionate with their trusted humans, though some may choose one member of the family to bond to most closely.

Mini Dachshund Size

Mini Dachshund

Mini Dachshunds are petite dogs who stand just 5–6 inches at the shoulder and weigh no more than 11 pounds fully grown

According to breed standards for the Dachshund, mini weight can be less than ⅓ the weight of the standard Doxie. Standard Dachshunds aren’t particularly large dogs, but compared to mini Dachshunds they’re downright huge!

Standard Dachshund vs Mini Dachshund Size
HeightWeight
Standard Dachshund8-9 inches16-32 pounds
Mini Dachshund5-6 inches11 pounds or less

Mini Dachshund Health

Unfortunately—thanks to the breed’s iconic long body and short legs—mini Dachshunds are prone to a number of back and joint problems. Mini Dachshund owners must be extra vigilant to not allow their dogs to jump off of high surfaces, over-exert during exercise or playtime, and maintain a healthy body weight to avoid adding unnecessary pressure to the spine. Intervertebral disc disease is particularly common in miniature Dachshunds, which can lead to serious lifelong health issues and even paralysis.

Other health issues it’s a good idea to look out for if you own a mini Dachshund include:

  • Ear infections
  • Skin issues (e.g. allergies, hot spots, hair loss)
  • Food allergies
  • Eye and vision problems (e.g. cataracts, retinal atrophy)
  • Dental disease
  • Joint issues (e.g. luxating patella, hip dysplasia)
  • Diabetes
  • Seizure disorders

Mini Dachshund FAQ

Seeing what other dog owners want to know about your dream dog breed can be a great way to learn the answers to questions you might not have thought to ask yourself! Here’s what the internet wants to know about mini Dachshunds.

Do mini Dachshunds shed?

Yes. When it comes to the mini dachshund, longhaired individuals shed slightly more than short hairs. Mini long haired Dachshunds and whirehaired Dachshunds have thick double coats that shed year round with two periods of increased shedding during seasonal changes.

How long do mini Dachshunds live?

The average mini Dachshund life expectancy is 12–16 years

How much do mini Dachshunds cost?

If you purchase your mini Dachshund puppy from a reputable breeder, you can expect to pay $1,000–$3,000. If you choose the rescue route, you’ll pay an adoption fee of around $150–$400 which will go towards helping other dogs find their forever homes.

What are the best dog foods for mini Dachshunds?

Mini Dachshunds have the same dietary needs as standard Dachshunds, but with fewer calories. Check out Rocky Kanaka’s guide to the best dog foods for Dachshunds—this list is even picky-dog approved!

What is a double dapple mini Dachshund?

Breed standards for the mini Dachshund include a coat pattern called “dapple.” In the Dachshund world, the term dapple refers to a pattern we would call “merle” in other breeds like the Australian Shepherd.

A double-dapple (or double merle) is a dog that has two dapple parents and inherits two copies of the dapple gene. Double dapple mini Dachshunds are born with serious and often life-threatening genetic abnormalities, and many do not make it through the full pregnancy. Double dapples don’t have the colorful patterns of their parents, but instead are usually all white.

Only one copy of the dapple gene should be included in any mating pair. Although this combination does not guarantee that all the puppies will be dapple, it does eliminate the risk of serious health issues for the resulting pups.

What is a teacup mini Dachshund?

Teacup mini Dachshunds are miniature Dachshunds that have been selectively bred to be even smaller. To qualify as a “teacup,” mini Dachshunds need to weigh less than 6 pounds. Breeders will choose the smallest of their full grown adults to breed in an effort to produce smaller and smaller puppies. Unfortunately, breeding dogs to be extremely small can have negative effects on their health, and many “teacup” dog breeders neglect genetic health testing in favor of aesthetics.

Cream of the Crop: Exploring the World of English Cream Dachshunds https://rockykanaka.com/cream-of-the-crop-exploring-the-world-of-english-cream-dachshunds/ Fri, 22 Sep 2023 17:53:49 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=37105 You’ve definitely heard of a Dachshund before—the long, low-rider “wiener dog” is a pop-culture icon and one of the world’s most popular and recognizable dog breeds! Dachshunds come in the standard size and in miniature and come in short and long hair varieties. But, did you know that Dachshunds also come in a wide range of coat colors?

English Cream Dachshunds

Beyond the standard black and tan, there’s a whole world of fascinating Doxie colors to explore! One of the most coveted is English cream—a variation of cream that refers specifically to Dachshunds that are almost white or cream with very little reddish undertone. True English cream Dachshunds must originate in England, but many cream Doxies from other regions are also labeled English cream. English cream Dachshunds typically have a single solid coat color, but there are English creams with patterning or markings.

Here, we’ll explore the world of English cream Dachshunds from their fur in beautiful cream shades to their vivacious personalities.

Meet 7 English Cream Dachshunds from Instagram

You can’t really get to know a unique breed without getting a good idea of what they look like. English cream Dachshunds look like any other Dachshund but with a distinctive cool, creamy coat. You’ll notice that some English creams are almost white, while others lean more towards red. While “official” English creams rarely have red in their fur, many “American creams” and other red dilutes are also labeled as English creams.

True English cream Dachshunds can be clear or shaded, but they are almost always miniature, long-haired varieties of the breed. You will almost never come across a true cream smooth-coat, wire-coat, or standard-sized Dachshund.

Before we take a look at these cuties, let’s quickly go over the different types of English cream coat:

  • Clear cream: No shading or dark pigmentation to the fur
  • Shaded cream: Cream topped with darker colors, sometimes as dark as black

English Cream Dachshund Basic Info

English cream Dachshunds are a specific “variety” of cream Dachshunds. Like most dog breeds, the Dachshund comes in a range of colors like the standard black and tan or the more exotic wheaten or wild boar. Cream is considered breed standard only for miniature long-haired Dachshunds according to the American Kennel Club, and both English and American cream Dachshunds are purebred.

Color plays an almost insignificant role in a dog’s personality or physiology, and English cream Dachshunds should have the same temperament and physicality as any other purebred Dachshund. The smallest breed in the hound group, Dachshunds are determined dogs with immense prey drive and a love of work. Though they thrive when given a job and allowed to exercise their natural instincts, English cream Dachshunds are also fabulous companions and loving family pets.

English Cream Dachshund Temperament

Dachshunds are curious, intelligent, and social dogs with keen noses for mischievous adventures and getting into trouble. A variety of hound breed, Dachshunds have a high prey drive and become totally focused and determined once they have set their minds on something. Some might call the Dachshund stubborn, while others would say they are steadfast and independent thinkers

Alert and observant, English cream Dachshunds enjoy plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation and can get bored easily. Once tired out, Dachshunds can be very snuggly and keen to nap, and some become a little lazy in their golden years. Dachshunds like to have routine, and will protest if you wake them too early, or feed them too late—some may even be a little bossy when enforcing their schedule.

Fantastic companions that become extremely loyal to their humans, Dachshunds sometimes do well with children but are better with older respectful kids who understand and can follow boundaries. Goofy and playful, Dachshunds that do enjoy kids like to romp and sometimes boss around their young playmates.

English Cream Dachshund Size

English cream Dachshunds are always miniature Dachshunds, which stand just 5–6 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 11 pounds or less

English Cream Dachshund Health

The Dachshund breed is fairly healthy in general, not prone to excessive health problems or concerning genetic conditions. The average lifespan of an English cream Dachshund is around 12–16 years, but some examples of the breed live even longer. The biggest concern for English cream Dachshunds is their unique skeletal structure. Thanks to their long backs and short legs, some Dachshunds may be prone to injury, and should not be encouraged to make jumps on or off furniture or other structures. The few key health problems to look out for with your English cream mini Dachshund include:

  • Spinal injury
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Patellar luxation
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Ear infections

When buying a “rare” or highly sought-after variety of dog, it’s very important to do your due diligence and do as much research as possible. Reputable, ethical breeders exist and are wonderful, but there are also unethical backyard breeders and puppy mills who will do their best to convince you they are legit. To start your search for a purebred English cream Dachshund, we recommend checking out the American Kennel Club’s breeder marketplace where you can connect with reputable breeders from around the country.

Adoption or rescue are also fantastic ways to find your new canine bestie, and there are plenty of Dachshunds and Dachshund mixes currently looking for homes. Here are a few resources for Dachshund rescue to get you started:

English Cream Dachshund FAQ

English cream Dachshund
Source: creme of the crop dachshunds

There’s plenty more to learn about the English cream Dachshund, especially if you think you want to bring one into your life! We’ve covered the basics with broad strokes, but we know there are also some specific questions to be answered by dog lovers just like you.

Do English cream Dachshunds shed?

Yes. Dachshunds (both smooth-coat and long-haired) are considered moderate shedders. They shed year-round and benefit from occasional brushing to catch loose fur. Because all English creams are long-haired Dachshunds they do require additional grooming and care to prevent matting and to keep them clean.

Are English cream Dachshunds hypoallergenic?

No. No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, and all dog breeds carry approximately the same amount of allergen. Some dogs are low-shedders, which makes them slightly less likely to drop dander. However, dander is not the only way to be exposed to canine allergens. Saliva and urine also carry canine allergen components, so no matter what dog breed you own, you can’t avoid that they will still be 100% dog.

How much do English cream Dachshunds cost?

Because of their “exclusive” genetic lineage, English cream Dachshunds may be more sought after than American cream or just “cream” varieties of the breed. So, how much is an English cream Dachshund worth, exactly? If you buy an English cream Dachshund puppy from a breeder, you’ll pay around $4,000–$6,000

While this may sound expensive, if you have done your due diligence to find a reputable, ethical Dachshund breeder whose puppies meet breed standards thanks to vigorous genetic testing, this price is absolutely justified.

But how much are English cream Dachshunds if you manage to adopt one? It’s unlikely you’ll find an English cream Dachshund at a rescue or shelter, it’s not impossible. Most rescues ask for around $150–$400 for small breeds like Dachshunds. Remember that this money goes right back to the rescue organization to help more dogs find their potential owners.

Are English cream Dachshunds good with children?

Sometimes. Reviews are mixed when it comes to Dachshunds and small children. Dachshunds can be stubborn, defensive, and reactive, and don’t enjoy being handled or grabbed at—these brave little dogs require autonomy and respect. Young children aren’t always developmentally ready to be gentle and respectful with dogs, and Dachshunds may not be patient with their need to learn.

On the other hand, Dachshunds can be very playful and affectionate, and some examples of the breed absolutely adore children. Ultimately, it comes down to socialization and individual personality.

Do English cream Dachshunds bark a lot?

Yes. Dachshunds are hounds bred to chase down small game animals, and part of that job involves barking to alert their humans. Dachshunds are well known to be vocal, and will always tell you when the mail has arrived, someone is walking by, or they’re in the mood for some attention.

Are English cream Dachshunds easy to train?

Sort of. If you understand hounds, have experience with dogs, and are able to put in plenty of time and patience, Dachshunds are very trainable. These little dogs are super intelligent, but they are also prone to independence which may make them a little uninterested in what you have to say. Typically very food-motivated, high-value treats are a great tool for training Doxies.

What is the difference between an American cream and a true English cream Dachshund?

True English cream Dachshunds come from a specific genetic line of cream Dachshunds bred in England. These Dachshunds were specifically bred for their coat color and are not a dilute of red, which is what distinguishes them from American creams. Cream Dachshunds bred in the United States are sometimes born a deeper shade of red which fades or “dilutes” into a cream. Though the end result looks very similar, these two factions of cream Dachshunds are considered distinctly different from one another by discerning fans of the breed.

Is an English cream Dachshund rare?

Sort of. True English cream Dachshunds come from one line of Dachshunds bred in England, but the color cream is known and standard within the Dachshund world. English cream is considered rare because it is not a dilute red, which is where most other cream Dachshunds get their coat color.
