Just a few weeks ago, Graffiti was running around, full of joy and completely himself. He likely still would be exerting himself like nothing was wrong if we hadn’t taken him in for his routine annual exam and X-rays. That visit is when we discovered a large tumor on his spleen. As you all know, he was diagnosed with splenic hemangiosarcoma, and by the time we found it, it had already metastasized to his lungs, making surgery no longer an option. This disease is especially devastating because it often shows no outward symptoms and grows silently. Without that routine appointment, we wouldn’t have known, and everyday activity (running, jumping etc) would have been extremely dangerous for him. Now that we do know, we’re able to shift our care and focus on what matters most: giving him the best possible quality of life through supportive care, medications, supplements, and being fully present for every day we have left with him. From “Healthy” to Dying

During the wellness exam, vets noticed something was visibly off about Graffiti’s abdomen. Further tests were carried out, and the results came back with shocking details: Graffiti had a large tumor in his spleen, medically diagnosed as splenic hemangiosarcoma. What made this news harder for his family to digest was the realization that the tumor had been growing quietly inside him without any physical signs of illness manifesting. 

Then came more devastating news.

The vets discovered that the splenic tumor was in its advanced stage and had already metastasized to his lungs. Graffiti’s family was informed that the tumor couldn’t be removed through surgery because of its size and how far it had spread. With painful hearts, the vets confirmed that Graffiti only had 4-6 weeks left to live.

Choosing Positivity Over Fear

To Graffiti’s family, news of his limited time brought instant sadness and disbelief. But as devastating as this revelation was, they made the brave decision to focus on giving Graffiti the best possible quality of life for his remaining time. 

Since the diagnosis, Graffiti’s family has been working closely with his veterinary team to manage his care and comfort at home. His daily routine now involves pain medication to reduce discomfort and lots of supportive care from his family.

Graffiti’s owners are choosing to make the most out of his limited time instead of focusing on his dreaded fate. They’re spending more time with him during this period, knowing every moment with him is a precious gift. 

What’s most comforting about Graffiti’s situation is that despite the heartbreaking diagnosis, he doesn’t look like a dog nearing the end of life. Nothing makes Fiona happier than being around Nori. She follows her feline bestie everywhere, including squeezing her fluffy self inside Nori’s crate just so she can be close to her.

This is the heartbreaking reality of Watson, a 10-year-old Corgi who can’t bark, growl, or make any meaningful sounds of communication simply because his previous owner debarked him.  

A LifeLong Struggle 

Watson’s previous owner debarked him when he was still a young dog. It’s now eight years since Watson lost his ability to voice out his feelings.

As revealed in a recent TikTok video posted by his new mom, @teresa_jack, Watson’s previous family put him through this barbaric procedure to turn him into a more “quieter” & less barky family dog for apartment living. They had the option of finding another dog that would be a better fit for their household. Yet, they chose to take the cruel route of silencing Watson. They took away the most important part of Watson’s identity that made him feel “normal”. His voice.

What makes this even more heart-wrenching is that Watson’s instincts to voice out his emotions are very much alive. But each time he tries to let out a sound, the only thing that comes out is a hoarse noise that no one around him can correctly interpret. His struggle was captured in the heartbreaking video that has since left millions of TikTok users fighting back tears. 

You can see the confusion in Watson’s eyes as he opens his mouth repeatedly; it’s as if he knows that a part of him is missing. Even though Watson now has a family that adores him to bits, it’s hard to accept that he has to face the horrors of his past every single day. 

The Other Darker Side of Debarking 

Sadly, being debarked left Watson with a behavioral struggle: reactivity. And the thing is, Watson’s reactivity isn’t out of aggression. He simply reacts because being voiceless makes him feel helpless. Watson can’t bark or growl to communicate his boundaries to people or other dogs, and so he becomes reactive whenever he feels uncomfortable. Reactivity is the only defense tool that Watson knows. 

The American Veterinary Medical Association describes debarking as a surgical procedure that involves removing parts or all of a dog’s vocal cords to reduce the intensity, volume, or pitch of their bark. Experts say that debarking isn’t a justifiable solution to unwanted barking because it doesn’t get rid of a dog’s instinctive motivation to bark. In other words, a debarked dog still has the instincts to bark. Therefore, they’ll naturally attempt to make these sounds when they have a need to express. This is largely what makes debarking such an inhumane practice. 

While debarking isn’t entirely banned across the USA, most states have strict regulations surrounding the practice. For instance, states like New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Maryland prohibit debarking unless a licensed veterinarian deems it medically necessary. 

Generally, a dog’s vocal cords don’t regenerate once removed. But in cases where the vocal cords were partially removed, near-normal bark sounds may return within months of debarking.

Known then as “Trump,” Harry lived in a luxury apartment complex that promised comfort, but behind closed doors, his reality was anything but, according to news.com.au. For three long months, a concerned neighbor, Helia Abdollahi, quietly documented Harry’s heartbreaking isolation. That neighbor’s determination to speak up would change everything.

Neglected in the Winter

Harry’s life on the balcony wasn’t just lonely; it was deprived of basic needs. In the bitter cold of Melbourne’s winter in July, the little Corgi had almost no protection from the harsh elements. His only “shelter” was a basic wooden kennel shoved into a corner, with no proper bedding to keep him warm or comfortable.

The concerned neighbor, Helia, eventually shared the footage publicly. In the video, Harry spins in tight circles on the narrow balcony, which Helia calls “a heartbreaking sign of anxiety and psychological distress.”

Sometimes, his owner would briefly step outside. Harry’s entire body would light up with hope, his tail wagging eagerly for even the smallest bit of affection. But time and again, that hope was crushed as he was ignored without so much as a pat.

What’s even more heartbreaking? Harry never tried to step inside. He seemed to know the invisible boundary, that he wasn’t welcome beyond the balcony door.

Helia called the entire ordeal emotionally abusive for the dog. She noted, “Melbourne is freezing right now. I can barely handle the cold inside my apartment. I can’t even imagine how this small dog is surviving out there night after night.”

Getting Harry To Safety Proved Difficult

Harry’s story quickly struck a chord, racking up over 200,000 views and sparking outrage across Australia from people demanding better for the little Corgi. But getting him to safety was far from simple.

Helia did everything she could, filing reports with the RSPCA, submitting detailed videos, and reaching out to rescues and local authorities. Still, the law limited what could be done. Despite two visits, the RSPCA couldn’t take Harry, as Victorian legislation only permits pets seizure in very specific cases like entanglement or starvation.

At last, with mounting public pressure and growing support from animal welfare groups, the owner agreed to surrender Harry to the council on July 11, a decision both parties recognized was in the dog’s best interest.

Journey To Happy Ending

Harry ended up at Lost Dogs’ Home, an animal rescue organization in Victoria, Australia. When he was finally made available for adoption, nearly 400 people stepped up, hoping to give him the life he deserved. 

The little dog arrived at the shelter frightened and unsure how to simply be a dog. But beneath the fear was a playful spirit waiting to shine. Once he feels safe, his joy is unmistakable—chasing balls, cuddling soft toys, and soaking in every bit of human affection he once went without.

Pomchi Basic Info

Pomchis are Chihuahua Pomeranian mixes also called Chi-Poms, Pomahuahuas, or Chimeranians. Pomeranians and Chihuahuas are similar in size but differ vastly in breed origins. 

Chihuahuas are the descendants of an ancient breed called the Techichi originating in modern-day Mexico, though some theorize they may have been brought to Mexico by Spanish conquistadors. Mostly kept as beloved companion animals, ancient Chihuahuas may have been so revered that they would be sacrificed following their owner’s death to help guide them through the afterlife. 

Pomeranians are descendants of Arctic sled dogs and are the smallest Spitz group member. Once used as sled dogs and guard dogs, the first Pomeranains were larger dogs than the modern Pom, which was bred down in size over many decades. Pomeranians were popularized thanks to British royalty, who took a liking to the breed and began keeping it. This also encouraged breeders to produce even smaller dogs to create the Pom we recognize today. 

By considering the features of both of the Pomchi’s parent breeds we can make some educated generalizations about Pomchis. With mixed-breed dogs, it’s important to remember that there are no breed standards and many outliers whose physical and temperament features will differ from the “baseline” expected of this mix.

Let’s get into the not-so-nice history and controversy surrounding canine tail docking. 

Are Pembroke Welsh Corgis Born with Tails?

A: Yes! Most Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born with long tails. 

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are typically born with long tails, but “breed standards” from official dog registries like the American Kennel Club call for the breed to be bobtailed. But, why would the breed standard of a dog include features they aren’t born with? 

Theoretically, the origins of tailing docking come from ranchers who chose to dock the tails of working Pembroke Welsh Corgis to prevent them from sustaining injuries from the cattle. The idea was that a long tail “served the dog no purpose” but was a liability to be stepped on, trapped, or otherwise injured while the dog worked. 

Today, the process of tail docking is almost exclusively cosmetic, as the vast majority of Pembroke Welsh Corgis are everyday pets and not herding dogs. Nevertheless, breed standards for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi call for a bobtail.

Pros of Docking Corgi Tails

While some might consider “conforming to breed standards” a point in favor of tail docking, we think this is unnecessary for everyday dog owners. The average person does not want their dog to participate in dog shows. We also believe that the breed standards set more than half a century ago should be reconsidered for naturally long-tailed dogs expected to appear in the show ring with a bobtail. 

This said, there are two instances in which it may be more beneficial for the dog to have their tail removed than preserving their natural length. 

1. Preventing Working Dog Injuries

It is true that for some working dogs—herding dogs in particular—having a long tail can be hazardous. Tails run the risk of getting caught in fences, machinery, or under the hooves of livestock, and sustaining a tail injury while working could be both physically and psychologically damaging for the dog. Some herding dogs do completely fine with their tails, but this is a consideration to make especially for dogs working with large livestock like cattle. 

2. Post-Injury Tail Amputations

Some dogs require amputation of their tails following a serious injury when the tail cannot be saved. In some cases, amputation can prevent infection or systemic disease or may be the most cost-effective and gentle option for the dog to heal quickly. Tail amputations should not be performed lightly, and most vets will try to preserve a dog’s tail following an injury. 

Cons of Docking Corgi Tails

We could probably go on for quite a while about the issues with removing Corgi tails, but we’re boiling it down to four main points. These are the most prominent and potentially serious negative effects of docking tails. 

1. Tail Docking is Painful

Despite what some people may say, tail docking is painful not only during the procedure but also after it. The physical pain can be extremely distressing, and some puppies—especially those whose tails are docked improperly—can develop emotional trauma following the event. 

The healing process is also painful, and for some dogs, the healing process never brings relief. 

2. Post-Surgery Complications

Dogs that have their tails removed run the risk of developing infections, excessive bleeding, and nerve damage which can cause severe pain and delayed healing. 

3. Long-Term Complications

Unfortunately, some dogs experience chronic health issues caused by their tail docking like chronic sensitivity in their hind end, underdeveloped pelvic muscles, phantom limb syndrome, and even chronic pain. Some dogs that have their tails docked can even become incontinent. 

4. Loss of Key Communication Tool

Dogs use their tails as one of their number one communication tools. Wagging isn’t the only thing dogs do with their tails, they also use them to tell each other when they want to play, if they are feeling uncertain, want more space, and so much more. Losing a tail is almost like losing your voice in the dog world, and dogs with cropped tails may struggle in social situations. 

Is Tail Docking Cruel?

Yes. Not only is removing the tail of a puppy unnecessary, but it can also be painful and have life-long consequences for the dog. 

Pro-tail-docking advocates may spread the myth that when puppies are young enough to have their tails docked, they do not have a fully developed nervous system, and do not feel the pain of the amputation. This is an outright lie. Tail docking is painful no matter how young the puppy is. 

Even if tail docking was somehow painless—which it isn’t—the plethora of negative side effects of tail docking are enough to confirm that cosmetic docking is cruel. Today, many veterinarians in the United States and abroad refuse to perform cosmetic tail docking.

The Auggie dog is a mix of miniature Australian Shepherd and Pembroke Welsh Corgi—two varieties of herding breed. Standard Australian Shepherds originate in Europe from a line of herding breeds native to the Pyrenees Mountains. 19th-century immigrants from Europe to Australia brought their herding dogs with them. Isolation helped to refine the breed, and American farmers encountering these dogs misidentified them as a native Australian breed, thus creating what we know as the Australian Shepherd. 

Pembroke Welsh Corgis originate in Great Britain. Farmers in the region used short-legged herding breeds since at least the 12th century, but the Pembroke gained distinction as a unique breed in the late 19th century. The first Pembroke Welsh Corgis were brought to the US in 1934 by Olde English Sheepdog breeder Mrs. Lewis Roesler, and her Corgis were the first two to be registered with the AKC. Auggie Dog Temperament

Unsurprisingly, herding dogs like to herd. Auggie dogs can be bossy and mouthy, meaning they’ll sometimes nip, poke, or use their bodies to move humans and other dogs. This quality is desirable when you’re a rancher moving thousands of cows, but not so positive when you have small children. While they can be good family dogs, Auggies need a lot of training and stimulation to keep them from self-fulfilling their herding instincts. 

“When we take [our Auggie dog] to the dog park he runs around attempting to herd all of the other dogs. For having such short legs he can sure run fast,” says a comment from a Reddit user with a full-grown Auggie dog.

Another comment from a user with an Auggie puppy says: “I have this mix too, she is 15 weeks old, and I’ve had to put a massive amount of training into her to not nip absolutely everything.”

Luckily, Auggie dogs are relatively easy to train since they are highly intelligent and enjoy having a “job.” Auggie dogs have uniquely high energy levels and need extensive physical exercise.
