The Chihuahua who played Bruiser and the Chihuahua who played his mother were real-life mother and son.

This is what happened to a senior dog called Guac, a tiny 15-year-old Chihuahua who went on a long and arduous journey to find her forever home. She was first found as a stray dog by a shelter in Texas, The PAWerful Rescue. After being there for months, she was adopted in January 2024. This would have been the moment when the sweet dog must have felt blessed and grateful to have found a home.

However, the Chihuahua’s hopes and dreams were shattered when she was surrendered months later to the same shelter. Needless to say, this broke the hearts of the shelter staff, and they wanted to rehome her soon, but to a deserving family.  

Another Chance At Love

After being abandoned twice, the shelter hoped to send Guac to a home where she would be loved for the rest of her life. So, they reached out to a family in Colorado who had adopted from them previously. In a heartwarming twist to this elderly dog’s tale, she is now a part of a family of loving humans and many siblings, collectively known as The Fellowship of the Bean. (watch the video below)

In the video posted by her new family, @the_wee_ones, on Instagram, it is easy to see that the dog, now named Elfie, has won the lottery prize in terms of finding her furever home. 

The video describes her rollercoaster ride from facing heartbreak after heartbreak in Texas to playing in her new big yard with her siblings in Colorado. Seeing her rolling in the grass happily will surely bring a smile to everyone’s faces, especially after everything she has gone through. 

From Texas Tears To Colorado Cheers

For transporting Elfie to her safe haven, the shelter arranged transport from Texas to Colorado. Then, her new dog mom packed up her other pets in an RV and drove to meet Elfie in Denver and take her home. 

While Elfie’s previous adoptive parent had surrendered her in a blanket without any guilt or remorse, it was touching to see her new parent putting so much effort into giving Elfie the love and care she deserves. 

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of matching the right dog with the right home. Adopting a dog is a lifelong commitment, and pet parents must consider the dog’s needs before initiating the adoption process. 

In May 2025, Georgia opened her heart and home to Norma, a beautiful Chihuahua who’d been rescued from an unimaginably miserable life at a puppy mill. Norma spent her entire life confined to a tiny, filthy cage where she was denied love, kindness, and nourishing meals. Sweet Norma grew up not knowing what gentle human touch felt like. All she knew was that human hands came with beatings.

Norma also never got a chance to socialize properly with humans or other dogs. Sadly, this experience turned her into an anxious dog who feared everyone and everything around her. 

But even though Norma’s trauma seemed obvious, Georgia didn’t view her as a lost cause. Instead, she saw her as a survivor who needed tons of love & patience to rise above her horrific past experiences. 

Unsure of Her New Beginnings

When Norma first arrived in her new home, the new sense of freedom felt foreign and scary to her. She’d been so used to a life of confinement that being outside made her body tremble in fear. 

“I would take her outside where she would sit and shake in absolute fear of the world around her,” Georgia captioned in an emotional TikTok video. 

Even the dog park, which most dogs consider their happy place, seemed like a battlefield to Norma. Whenever Georgia took her to the local park to help her socialize, Norma would retreat anytime a friendly dog got too close. Most times, she’d run and hide under a bench when a pup at the park tried to initiate play. What’s even more heartbreaking is that deep down, Norma wanted to fit in and have fun with other dogs. The longing in her eyes said it all. She’d take a few courageous steps and approach her furry mates, only for fear to kick in & remind her not to lower her guard.

Even though this setback persisted for a while, it didn’t stop Georgia from taking Norma to the park. Georgia understood that a severely undersocialized dog like Norma, who’d endured so much abuse, deserved a chance to thrive at her own pace. And she was right. As months went by, Norma’s real personality, the one that had been overshadowed by her painful past, began to bloom.

From Darkness to Light 

The heartwarming video, posted by Georgia on her TikTok account, shows just how far Norma has come, and it’s honestly hard to watch without sobbing a little. Norma is no longer the fearful dog she was when Georgia adopted her months ago.

Today, Norma interacts with everyone around her with so much confidence and excitement. The outside world that initially terrified her has become her greatest source of happiness. Norma now freely plays with other dogs at the park and even seeks out belly rubs from other dog owners. Yes, the same dog that once dreaded human touch now begs for it from total strangers.

Thanks to her loving & patient owner, Norma has fully let go of the fear that ruled her life for years. Norma didn’t just find a home that made her feel safe, loved, and wanted. She finally found herself. Her happy ending is proof that love can heal even the most broken of dogs.

But then, something incredible happened. A call came from Marin Humane saying Peach had been found alive. The family was overjoyed to learn the news, and soon after, she was safely reunited with her family. Their emotional reunion is a beautiful reminder that hope isn’t lost, even when it feels like goodbye.

When All Seemed Lost, a Miracle Appeared

Jim Chow and his family were devastated when their beloved dog, Peach, went missing. The little Chihuahua was more than just a pet. She was family. For months, they searched tirelessly, putting up fliers, visiting local shelters, and asking neighbors for any sign of her. 

But as time passed and no leads came, the painful reality began to sink in. Eventually, the family held a small memorial service to say goodbye, believing Peach was gone forever.

Then, more than a year later, during an animal abuse investigation, an officer from the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) spotted a small Chihuahua in distress. That little dog was Peach, alive after 13 long months.

A Tearful Reunion 

In a TikTok post, Marin Humane, an animal shelter in Novato, California, shared how the officer took the dog and placed her under their care. Their staff scanned the little dog for a microchip to learn more about her background. 

The scan showed she was indeed microchipped, and the chip confirmed the pup was Peach, the Chihuahua who had been missing from her San Francisco home since June 2024.

The shelter immediately called the Chow family to confirm Peach’s identity. When Jim Chow and his family heard the news, they quickly arranged to bring Peach home. Shortly after Peach arrived at the rescue, staff recorded an emotional reunion.

Footage of that moment shows Peach running down a hallway and leaping into her family’s outstretched arms. The tiny dog accepted hugs and belly rubs as her owners smiled and cried with relief. 

According to People, the SRPD arrested and took into custody the individual who was caring for Peach on felony animal abuse charges.

Marin Humane emphasizes that this case highlights the importance of microchipping pets and encourages anyone who finds a lost animal to contact their local shelter.

He was so small he made a standard shelter kennel look cavernous. That alone tells you something. And while it was obvious that this little guy hadn’t known much love, what wasn’t obvious was just how deeply the trauma ran—until I crawled in beside him.

How I Discovered This Shelter

Kelly and I were celebrating our eight-year wedding anniversary with a getaway in Coronado. We’d been together for about 15 years now, and what do we do on our romantic getaway? We visit an animal shelter, of course. When you’re in it, you’re in it, you know? The team at Chula Vista Animal Services was so incredible, and when they told me about some of the challenges they face, I knew we had to come back and help.

The Reality of Fear

This little guy – who we named Archer – had been at the shelter for almost a week, but I would have thought he’d just arrived yesterday. That level of fear is absolutely exhausting for a dog. You could see it in his eyes – they were barely open, like he was just worn out from not being able to sleep since arriving.

Working with scared dogs requires patience. I never rush in or make direct eye contact – especially as a large male entering their space. Instead, I make myself as small as possible and create intrigue by looking away and having an ongoing conversation. It takes the focus off them and shows them they’re not the center of attention.

The Pac-Man Trail and Small Victories

I brought my handy-dandy treats and set up what I call a “Pac-Man trail” – a line of treats leading toward the dog. The goal is to get their nose working because when a dog’s nose is engaged, it unlocks a different part of their brain and reduces the fear response.

At first, Archer would only sniff the treats, not eat them. But even those micro-moments of sniffing were huge victories. For just a moment, he had to release that fear to take that sniff.

Archer’s Story

Archer is part of a heartbreaking but unfortunately common situation. He’s one of 20-25 small dogs that came from what started as a good Samaritan situation. Someone in the community near the shelter wanted to help stray dogs, and people knew they would take them in. But it became unmanageable.

What I love about Chula Vista Animal Services is their approach. Instead of just going in and taking all the dogs at once – which many places would do – they’re working with this person to gradually reduce the number of dogs while providing resources and support. It’s a much more compassionate approach that recognizes someone was trying to help.

Archer is estimated to be only about a year old. He had no microchip, no collar, and given the shelter’s proximity to the border, he may have originally come from Mexico. The shelter even put him on anti-anxiety medication because his stress levels were so severe.

The Breakthrough Moment

After exhausting other options, I decided to try what I call “the scoop” – gently picking him up and providing compression, similar to swaddling a baby. I squeezed myself into that tiny corner with him (and let me tell you, I need to stretch more at the gym), and something magical happened.

The moment I scooped Archer up, his shaking stopped. He actually started to relax, almost purring like a cat when I petted him. It was like he’d been waiting for someone to just hold him and tell him everything would be okay.

Meeting Matteo

Archer wasn’t alone in his fear. I met another Chihuahua mix from the same group – a three-year-old we named Matteo. The shelter had given him a behavioral rating of “zero,” meaning he needed the most help and patience. He was even more shut down than Archer, hiding behind a donut bed and trying to disappear entirely.

But Matteo surprised me. While Archer wouldn’t take treats, Matteo started crunching away – and let me tell you, that sound was oddly satisfying. The act of chewing helps release tension in a dog’s body, and you could see him starting to relax just a little.

The Bigger Picture

These dogs represent a larger challenge at Chula Vista Animal Services. Located in South San Diego County near the border, they serve many lower-income areas where landlords often don’t allow pets, especially larger dogs over 35 pounds. This shrinks their potential adopter pool significantly.

Their number one breed that struggles to get adopted? Surprisingly, it’s not pit bulls – it’s huskies and German shepherds. The apartment restrictions make it nearly impossible to place these larger dogs.

What These Dogs Need

Both Archer and Matteo are available for adoption right now. They need patient families who understand that love sometimes comes slowly. These aren’t dogs that will immediately run up to you with wagging tails. They need people willing to check their emotions at the door and accept some initial rejection.

But here’s what I know from years of doing this: the transformation these dogs can make with time and love is absolutely incredible. You’ll look back at pictures from their first day and barely recognize them as the same dog.

How You Can Help

Even if you can’t adopt, you can make a difference. Chula Vista Animal Services needs volunteers for their dog walking program and foster families. Often, fostering doesn’t fall under the same restrictions as ownership, so you might be able to help even if your lease doesn’t allow pets.

The biggest thing you can do? Share stories like this. I can’t tell you how many times people have told me they had no idea who I was, but a friend shared one of these videos, and that’s why they’re at the shelter adopting.

A Promise to Archer and Matteo

Before I left, I made both little guys a promise. I told them that from here on out, the only reason they’d be shaking is because they’re excited about getting treats. I assured them they were safe now, and that everyone at Chula Vista Animal Services loves them and will take care of them.

The next time I see them tucking themselves away like that, it’ll be in pictures from their new families – cuddling up in a La-Z-Boy with their new mom or dad, watching TV and sneaking treats.

These little guys deserve that chance at happiness. And with the right family, I know they’ll get it.

I was told, “He’s just a little guy hiding in the back.” And when I saw him? My heart cracked right down the middle. He was curled in a tight ball, shaking—completely shut down. But I knew: there’s a brave little soul in there, just waiting to be seen.

Earning Trust, One Treat at a Time

Pickles is about 5 months old. Based on his looks—and those signature east-west paws—we’re guessing he’s a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix. Yup, that makes him a Chiweenie. A low-riding, big-eyed bundle of nerves and sweetness.

He was found alone in a park by a Good Samaritan. No collar. No microchip. No signs that anyone was looking for him. He’s been at the shelter for four days, and while we always hold out hope, the longer it goes, the less likely it is that someone’s coming for him.

My first instinct, like most people’s, would be to scoop him up immediately. But that’s not how dogs communicate, and I needed to earn his trust on his terms. I wasn’t going to force him to love me, no matter how much I wanted to hold him.

People often ask me how I can leave after spending time with a dog and earning their trust. I won’t lie – it hurts my heart. It’s difficult. But what gets me through is imagining them with their forever family, living their best life, happy and confident and loved. That future happiness is worth my temporary heartache.

The poor little guy was shaking uncontrollably. I tried making myself smaller, sitting down on the floor to appear less threatening. For a dog so young to experience such intense fear is truly heartbreaking. He shouldn’t have to go through this. I thought about my son at the same age – how horrible it would be if he were left without the love, support, comfort, and safety of people who care for him.

Small Victories

His brain had shut down from fear, making him unable to enjoy treats or seek affection. Though every part of me wanted to pick him up and hold him, I knew we needed to start by releasing some of that fear first. If I overwhelmed him, it could flood him with even more trauma.

I kept talking softly while offering treats. His nose was working – a good sign. Sometimes frightened dogs won’t take treats from the floor but will take them from your hand. I tried a longer piece of treat to give him the distance he needed.

As I sat with him, memories of Katie came flooding back. She was a small dog we recently lost. That loss had been hard and some commented they weren’t happy with how it all went down. But the overwhelming positive response from our community is what brought me back to the shelter that day. I returned because I’m on a mission to help dogs like this one, and because even if you can’t physically come to the shelter, you’re here with me now, and that’s amazing.

Learning His Story

While working with him, I asked Kelly to share what we knew about this little one. He was young – around 4-5 months old by their estimate. Unfortunately, he had no microchip or known owner. A Good Samaritan had found him at a park and brought him in. This was his fourth day at the shelter.

From experience, I know that if a family doesn’t come within the first 24 hours, the odds of them claiming their dog diminish significantly. Parks are also common dumping grounds, as people sometimes think it’s a safe area where a family might find and take in their abandoned pet.

The health check noted his long nails, slightly dirty coat, and flea dermatitis on his lower back. For a dog this young to be this dirty and dealing with fleas, it suggests he hadn’t been lost for weeks or months – he wouldn’t have survived that long on his own at his size.

Interestingly, he was found with another dog, though we didn’t have details about that yet.

Becoming Pickles

Every dog needs a name, and Kelly suggested “Pickles.” I liked it immediately – I’m a fan of food names for dogs. With a name chosen, it was time for some positive affirmations.

I started telling him things he may have never heard before: “You’re a good boy, Pickles. Yes, you are. You’re such a good boy. I’m so proud of you. You’ve been brave and strong.” I wanted him to know that he was courageous, willing to trust and love. With those big eyes, he was checking all the boxes.

The Pickle Scoop

Finally, it was time for what I call “the scoop” – gently picking him up and giving him the secure embrace he needed. As I held him, I could feel how dirty he was, but more importantly, I noticed something remarkable – when I applied light pressure, his shaking stopped. With compression, he calmed down.

I made him a promise: “This is not what life is supposed to be, and from here on, it’s going to be warmth, comfort, treats, boundaries, safety, and reassurances. Your hard days are over. The good days are here.”

He was so stiff – no puppy should be that rigid. But as I held him with gentle compression, the transformation was immediate. His shaking subsided, and he began to relax.

Love Letters with Dogs

It was time for “Love Letters with Dogs,” a segment where we open mail sent by our viewers specifically for the dogs we’re sitting with. This activity also introduces shelter dogs to normal life experiences, like receiving packages – something most shelter dogs have never experienced.

Before opening the letters, we fitted Pickles with a compression jacket. These are wonderful for scared or anxious dogs, providing a constant gentle pressure that helps them feel secure.

We opened several heartwarming letters and gifts:

• Cheryl and Michelle sent an elephant toy so Pickles would “remember to be strong”
• Someone sent their soul dog CC’s favorite toy called “lambs”
• Sharon and David sent beautiful handmade cards that could be sold in the shelter’s store
• They also included hand-knitted hearts for the dogs
• Jill sent a pumpkin-themed gift

As we opened these gifts, Pickles began to fully relax in my arms, eventually falling asleep – a significant milestone for a dog who had been so on guard and afraid.

A Family Connection Discovered

Then came an unexpected twist. Kelly had tracked down information about the other dog Pickles was found with. When she showed me the video, I could see some similarities between Pickles and this larger female dog – they shared color patterns, though they looked quite different in size and some features.

I explained to viewers why the shelter might have separated them – sometimes it’s due to size differences (where the smaller dog might not get enough food), or because the dogs weren’t actually bonded. Neither Pickles nor the other dog was showing signs of distress from separation, which suggested they weren’t strongly bonded.

A Happy Ending Begins

As Pickles slept peacefully in my arms, I shared two pieces of good news. First, Lucky Chi Dog Rescue, an organization that specializes in small Chihuahuas and Chi-mixes, had agreed to take Pickles. Even better, when we asked if they could also take his potential relative, they immediately agreed to help both dogs.

This is just the beginning of Pickles’ journey. Leaving him would be hard on my heart, but I could already envision him curled up with his forever family in front of a warm fireplace, finally knowing what it means to be truly safe and loved.

The transformation had already begun – from a terrified pup hiding in the corner to one who could sleep peacefully in someone’s arms. That’s what makes all of this worthwhile.

For five long months, 14-year-old Stormy was overlooked by potential adopters, likely due to being too old and the medical care that came with her old age. Despite it all, she remained a sweet and gentle soul. Her patience paid off when she finally found her perfect match—a teenage girl who saw beyond her years.

Since then, they’ve shared a joyful life together. Stormy even accompanied her new mom to college, where their days were filled with love and laughter.
