When life feels too full to add one more responsibility, that might be the exact moment a dog needs you most. In early 2020, Rocky Kanaka and his wife Kelly were juggling more than most: she was newly pregnant, Rocky had just undergone heart surgery after a stroke, and they were raising two dogs—Flip, a boxer with lasting effects from distemper, and Zoey, a scrappy little terrier. They were also running The Dog Bakery and working hard to grow their online dog adoption channel. (Watch Kobe’s full video playlist above)

So when Rocky’s friend Tye Friis from Reversed Rescue in Leona Valley, California, called asking for help with a special-needs Cane Corso puppy, logic might’ve said “not now.” But love said otherwise.

An Unwanted Puppy with a Failing Heart

Kobe in hospital rushing for surgery

The puppy, Kobe, was in dire condition. Blind, underweight, and born with serious heart defects, he had been taken to a vet to be euthanized. The vet hesitated—Kobe wasn’t in pain and still had a spark in him. But the clock was ticking. If someone didn’t claim him that day, he wouldn’t make it out alive.

Tye’s rescue was at capacity. So he called Rocky.

Rocky and Kelly knew the odds were stacked against Kobe. The vet estimated the pup had only three months to live. But something in Kobe’s spirit—and those big, expressive eyes—convinced them to open their home and hearts.

The First Meeting

Kobe and Kelly first meet

They met Tye and Kobe at a pet store and turned the visit into a playful video shoot to raise awareness and supplies for the rescue. Kobe explored the aisles, bumping into things but unfazed, wagging and sniffing with delight. His big floppy ears and soft presence made Rocky think of Disney’s Dumbo—gentle, different, and endearing.

Though technically blind, Kobe’s eyes followed sound and light in such a focused way that Rocky and Kelly were sure some of his vision might be salvageable. They were wrong. A later specialist confirmed that Kobe had optic nerve hypoplasia. His eyes worked, but the nerve connecting them to his brain had never developed. He would never see.

Adopting the Unadoptable

Kobe as puppy

Despite the heavy diagnosis and Kobe’s failing heart—only one side functioned—the couple committed to making his short life full of joy. They raised money for a surgery that could extend his life, matching the donations with their own funds. Vets warned them the odds were low and the costs high, but the community rallied.

Before the surgery, Rocky surprised Kelly with adoption papers. They had vowed not to adopt their fosters so they could keep helping new dogs. But Kobe was different. His condition made transition risky, and emotionally, neither of them could let him go.

So they made it official. Kobe was no longer a foster. He was family.

One Surgery, Two Miracles

The day of Kobe’s operation, he collapsed from exhaustion. At the clinic, staff rushed him inside, and Rocky stood helplessly as CPR began. His heart had stopped.

Miraculously, they revived him. The surgeon, who had warned them not to expect miracles, went straight into emergency surgery. Nine hours later, he called: Kobe had made it through.

It was a success—but whether it would extend his life remained to be seen.

Kobe

Outliving Expectations

Kobe’s prognosis was six months. But he kept going. And growing.

Today, Kobe is five years old—an extraordinary feat for a giant-breed dog with a broken heart. His heart walls thickened over time, and although his health requires constant management, he wakes up every day full of energy and joy.

Kobe

He maps the house with his whiskers, listening and sniffing with precision. Visitors often can’t believe he’s blind. But more than that, they can’t believe the resilience of a dog who wasn’t supposed to make it to his first birthday.

Life Lessons from a Blind Dog

Kobe changed everything for Rocky and Kelly. He taught them patience, perspective, and what it really means to live in the moment. In the early days, Rocky—recovering from his own heart surgery—would lie on the floor beside Kobe to calm him. Their heartbeats would sync, and Rocky saw firsthand the healing power of quiet connection.

Though Kobe couldn’t go through formal training because of the stress it would put on his heart, he was so attuned to his family that he needed little instruction. He learned to sit, to navigate, to play gently—and to trust.

Kobe and Flip

Kobe isn’t just surviving. He’s thriving. And through him, Rocky and Kelly became parents—not just to a child, but to an entire philosophy: one of compassion, resilience, and celebrating every moment.

A Forever Promise

They’ve stopped fostering—for now. Kobe needs their full attention. But someday, they’ll open their home to others again. For now, every day with Kobe is a celebration. Whether he’s tasting homemade puppuccinos or navigating corners with expert nose-touches, he’s a daily reminder of what it means to persevere.

Rocky says it best: “Some dogs use their eyes to get your attention. Kobe uses his soul.”

And that, perhaps, is what makes his story unforgettable.

Cane Corso Basics & FAQ

Let’s start by getting a quick overview of these majestic pups.

The cane corso is an American Kennel Club recognized purebred breed. The AKC defines the breed as a gorgeous, sturdy pup with an elegant form. Historically, Cane Corsos were used as spotters when hunters were tracking difficult prey.

Mental NeedsRegular training

Do Cane Corso Shed?

Yes! Cane corsos have a short double-layered coat, which is prone to shedding. Owners should groom their cane corsos at least once every week. These grooming sessions should focus on brushing, which helps dislodge stuck hairs and dirt, but you won’t need to worry about knots or matting.

How Big Do Cane Corsos Get?

Cane corsos are big dogs with female cane corsos growing to 23.5–26 inches tall, and male cane corsos growing to 25–28 inches tall. The weight of a pup will depend on their height, and both male and female cane corsos can weigh anywhere from 88–110 pounds, though some cane corsos have been known to get even bigger.

How Long Do Cane Corsos Live?

Cane corsos can live 8–12 years! These dogs are fairly hardy, and they have fairly long lifespans for such large pups.

If you’re thinking about buying or adopting a cane corso, you’ll want to look out for a few key issues. Like most large dogs, these pups are prone to hip problems as they age. Cane Corsos are also prone to bloat, which is a serious condition, and could impact their longevity.

How Much is a Cane Corso Worth?

If you purchase a Cane Corso from a reputable dealer, you can expect to pay $800–$6,000. The price depends on various factors, including who the breeder is and what kind of coat your cane corso has.

How Much Exercise Does a Cane Corso Need?

Cane corsos require lots of exercise. This large breed is packed with energy, and daily walks are required to keep a cane corso happy and entertained. Ideally, you should also have a yard or space for your dog to run free (safely). If you can only dedicate an hour or two of your time every day to entertaining your pup, then the cane corso is not for you! They also need plenty of room, so apartments are not the ideal place to raise and keep a cane corso.

A Cane Corso at the beach

Cane corsos also need mental stimulation. In addition to basic obedience training, many cane corso owners enroll their pups in agility training. This gives dogs the ability to fully engage in the world around them in a healthy and safe way. To give them lots of mental stimulation at home, give them plenty of toys, puzzles, and socialization.

How to Pronounce Cane Corso?

Cane Corso is pronounced KAH-nay CORE-so.

Is a Cane Corso a Gentle Dog?

Yes! Despite being used as hunting dogs and looking formidable, cane corsos are well known for their gentle nature. Cane corsos are loyal to their owners, and their high intelligence makes them excellent companions. Their intelligence also makes them stubborn, and they can be difficult to train without experience working with large dogs like cane corsos to avoid behavioral issues.

Is a Cane Corso a Good Family Dog?

Yes! Thanks to their docile and gentle disposition, cane corsos make wonderful family pets. However, as with any dog, you should never leave your children unsupervised with a cane corso.

What 2 Breeds Make a Cane Corso?

Cane Corsos are purebred dogs, and can only be bred by breeding two purebred cane corsos. Mixed breed dogs are also awesome, they’re just not full cane corsos.

Where Can I Get a Cane Corso Puppy?

Does the cane corso sound like the perfect canine companion for you?

I think cane corsos are amazing, even if I’m a little biased. If you’re like me, then you probably want to know where to find a cane corso of your own.

In addition to the many reputable cane corso breeders across the country, you can also find cane corso specific rescues. Some of my favorites are:

11 Facts About Cane Corsos You Didn’t Know

I’ve curated a quick list of fun facts about cane corsos.

Keep reading to learn even more about this fantastic breed!

1. They’ve Fought Lions

Remember how I mentioned that Cane Corsos were once hunting dogs?

A Cane Corso & a Lion

Well, they were also fighting dogs in ancient Rome. Theories suggest that the Cane Corso was first spotted in the Tibetan Highlands, where it had happily resided for over 1,000 years. When Romans spotted these gorgeous dogs, they eagerly brought a few home. Some Cane Corsos were then put into arenas, where they fought lions.

Thankfully, cane corsos don’t need to fight anymore, and can now focus on fighting the urge to sneak treats from your plate!

2. We Almost Lost the Cane Corso Breed

Cane Corsos are becoming increasingly common, but they almost went extinct during World War II. Fortunately, breed enthusiasts banded together to salvage the breed in the 1970s.

In 1983, Società Amatori Cane Corso was founded. This group became instrumental in spreading the breed’s popularity and, in 1994, the Italian Kennel Club recognized the cane corso as its own breed. America lagged behind a bit, and cane corsos weren’t added to the official AKC list until 2010.

3. Cane Corsos Are in Many Paintings

Source: About Time Cane Corso Italiano

Thanks to their centuries-long lineage and gorgeous silhouette, cane corsos have been favored by many painters. Bartolomeo Pinelli and Andrea Mantega are particularly famous for their cane corso art. Throughout the Italian Renaissance, cane corsos were frequently immortalized on canvas.

4. Your Insurance May Not Like Them

While cane corsos are gentle giants, not everyone sees them that way thanks to the bias against all “bully breeds.” Unfortunately, the breed has been unfairly classified as violent, and some insurances refuse to cover individuals with a cane corso.

5. Cane Corsos Have Floppy Ears

Sometimes, people tell me, “Woah! Kobe doesn’t look anything like a cane corso. Look at those floppy ears!”

Every time this happens, I get excited, because I get to teach someone something new! Cane corsos are actually born with floppy ears. However, to conform to breed standards, many pups have their ears cropped. This practice is what gives the dogs their pointed ears, but it’s highly controversial.

Personally, I’m not a fan of cropping. It’s a purely cosmetic procedure, and science has yet to find a valid reason to perform the procedure, so I say let them flop!

6. Cane Corsos Have Graced the Iron Throne

Fans of Game of Thrones are likely familiar with this breed. In the HBO version of this series, Ramsay Bolton is the proud owner of a cane corso.

7. There Are Many Famous Cane Corsos

Thanks to their gorgeous figure, cane corsos are a favored breed of the rich and famous. Television personality Sherri Shepherd has a Cane Corso, and she regularly shows her pup off online. Famed quarterback Patrick Mahomes also has a Cane Corso — two, in fact! (Keep reading to find out more about the Mahomes Corsos.)

8. The Plural Is Actually “Cane Corsi”

Most people say that the plural of this breed is “cane corsos”, but that’s not exactly true. The breed’s name comes from Latin, and its meaning is generally taken to mean “bodyguard dog” or “robust dog”. Its Latin roots mean that the proper plural form of cane corso is “Cane Corsi”.

9. The Cane Corso Is a Chatterbox

It’s not an entirely unique trait, but it’s worth mentioning that cane corsos are particularly famous for their expressive voices. In addition to barking, these pups have been shown to yowl, snuffle, and make “whoo-whoo” noises.

10. Cane Corsos Are Often Mistaken for Mastiffs

Cane Corso vs English Mastiff

Thanks to their similar body type and large size, cane corsos are frequently mistaken for English mastiffs or bull mastiffs. If you see them both together, however, you’ll know which is which. Cane corsos are smaller, though not small. In fact, English Mastiffs are classified as “giant” dogs, and they can be twice the size of a full-grown cane corso!

11. Cane Corsos Come in 12 Colors

To wrap up my list of amazing cane corso facts, I’ll leave you with something neat about their double coats. These dogs come in a wide array of colors. 12 coats are recognized by breeders:

Understanding Cherry Eye in Dogs: Why This Sweet Cane Corso Struggles to Find a Home https://rockykanaka.com/cherry-eye-in-dogs/ Sat, 26 Oct 2024 17:00:42 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=86617 Cleo, a Cane Corso with a gentle nature, has been waiting over a year for her forever home at Sacramento’s Norcal Bully Breed Rescue. Despite her sweet temperament and striking dark coat, Cleo’s eye conditions have kept potential adopters away.

For more than a year, Cleo has struggled to find interest from adopters, largely due to her noticeable cherry eye in both eyes. Unfortunately, her eye issues have worsened, and she now suffers from entropion, a painful condition where her eyelashes grow inward, causing irritation and discomfort.

Credit: Source: NorCal Bully Breed Rescue on Facebook

Cleo’s best chance at a pain-free life and finding a family hinges on receiving surgery to correct both conditions. The rescue estimates the procedure will cost around $3,000. In an effort to raise funds, Norcal Bully Breed Rescue has turned to social media, asking supporters to donate and help cover the cost of Cleo’s much-needed surgery.

Cleo Now Suffers From Entropion

What Cleo needs is eye surgery as soon as possible. The rescue aims to treat the canine’s entropion and also fix the cherry eyes so that she could soon have better chances of landing a forever home. The total cost of the surgery is estimated to be $3,000.

In order to get help for the surgery costs, the rescue posted on Instagram urging people to come forward and donate whatever amount they can towards Cleo’s surgery.

Awaiting Surgery and Hoping for a Brighter Future

Many people responded positively to the rescue’s appeal and donated funds for Cleo. More than a week later, the rescue posted an update on Facebook. They shared that they were grateful for the donations and are in the process of scheduling the dog’s surgery.

In the meantime, Cleo is enjoying her time at her foster home, where she gets immense love and care. She plays with her foster fur sibling, Cairo, and receives plenty of belly rubs from her foster mom. The rescue hopes she will be free of her eye problems soon and will go to a loving forever home.

Cleo’s large size may seem intimidating, but her heart is just as big. She’s incredibly affectionate with both humans and other dogs, and she truly deserves a loving home. If you can help, please consider donating to her Instagram fundraiser to cover the cost of her much-needed surgery, or even better, give this wonderful girl the forever home she deserves.

If you’d like to know more about cherry eyes in dogs, keep on reading.

What is Cherry Eye in Dogs?

Cherry eye is a condition where the third eyelid, or nictitating membrane, prolapses, according to Small Door Veterinary’s medical experts. Normally hidden in the corner of a dog’s eye, this membrane produces tears. In dogs with cherry eye, the membrane becomes enlarged and protrudes, resulting in a swollen pink mass appearing in the corner of the eye.

Symptoms of Cherry Eye in Dogs

As you may see in images of cherry eye in dogs, the eye condition is characterized by a distinctive “cherry pit” appearance in the corner of your dog’s eye, nearest the nose. This swelling may be intermittent or permanent, and if left untreated, can lead to complications.

Common symptoms to watch for:

  • A smooth, round, pink-colored mass in the corner of the eye
  • Thick eye discharge
  • Your dog trying to paw at the affected eye

It’s crucial to seek veterinary attention if you notice any unusual eye symptoms, as they can also be indicative of more severe conditions, such as eye trauma, foreign objects in the eye, and potential vision loss or even eye loss.

What Causes Cherry Eye in Dogs?

Dr. Ryan Llera and Dr. Ernest Ward assert that the cherry eye occurs when the third eyelid gland prolapses due to a weak fibrous attachment to the lower inner rim of the eye. This anatomical vulnerability affects certain breeds, including:

  • Brachycephalic breeds (e.g., English Bulldog, French Bulldog, Pug)
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • Boston Terrier
  • Beagle
  • Bloodhound
  • Lhasa Apso
  • Shih Tzu

The weak attachment allows the gland to easily protrude, resulting in cherry eyes in dogs.

How to Diagnose Cherry Eyes?

A veterinary diagnosis of cherry eye typically involves a comprehensive eye examination, particularly in young dogs and susceptible breeds. Your veterinarian may perform:

  • Clinical examination: Visual assessment of the dog’s eyes
  • Schirmer tear test: Measures tear production because cherry eyes can develop dry eye
  • Fluorescein stain test: Detects corneal scratches or ulcers

These tests ensure the overall health of the eye and help identify potential complications in dogs with cherry eyes, such as reduced tear production, corneal scratches or ulcers, and risk of infection or perforation.

How To Treat Cherry Eye in Dogs?

The best treatment for cherry eye in dogs is surgery. Treatment for early stage cherry eye in dogs typically involves surgically replacing the third eyelid gland. Dr. Llera and Dr. Ward state, “It is essential to treat the condition as soon as possible to minimize permanent damage to the eye or third eyelid gland.”

Cherry Eye in Dogs
Source: @bellavitarescue

Surgery for cherry eyes in dogs is essential “because the third eyelid gland produces up to 50% of the watery portion of the tear film.” Insufficient tear production can lead to dry eye, a condition that can severely impair vision

When replacement techniques are ineffective or a prolapsed gland has been dysfunctional for too long, surgically removing the gland may be necessary. Your veterinarian will likely consider this a last resort, as it can have long-term consequences for your pet’s tear production capabilities.

Recovery And Management After Cherry Eye In Dogs Surgery

The outlook for pets undergoing third eyelid gland surgery is generally positive. Typically, the gland returns to normal function a few weeks post-surgery.

Possible Complications and Recurrence

  • 5-20% of dogs can face prolapse of the third eyelid gland again needing another surgery
  • Prolapse in one eye often leads to prolapse in the other eye as well

How To Prevent Cherry Eye in Dogs?

While the cherry eye cannot be prevented, vigilant monitoring can help identify potential issues early on, especially if your dog is part of a breed prone to this condition.

Certain breeds are more susceptible to cherry eye, and these same breeds often face increased risks for other eye conditions, including:

  • Entropion (eyelid rolling)
  • Distichia (abnormal eyelash growth)
  • Dry eye

When you regularly inspect your dog’s eyes, you can catch potential cherry eye cases early, identify other ocular conditions before they become severe, and ensure prompt veterinary care for optimal treatment outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the cherry eye in dogs painful?

Cherry eye, or prolapsed third eyelid gland, is typically painless, explains Dr. Brittany Grenus. However, it can lead to uncomfortable secondary issues, including corneal ulcers and chronic dry eye, which can cause significant distress and discomfort for your dog if left untreated.

What are home remedies for cherry eye in dogs?

Dr. Deborah Brown declares that cherry eye cannot be cured at home. You can take some measures before and after your dog’s surgery. Keep your dog’s eye surface clean with twice-daily gentle bathing using cooled boiled water and a cotton pad. Apply eye lubricant (e.g., Viskyal, Lubrithal, Lacrilube) 1-4 times daily. Use a cone collar and limit exercise to lead walks, avoiding dust and wind.

How to treat cherry eye in dogs without surgery?

As per New Hope Animal Hospital, veterinarians may use anti-inflammatory eye drops for cherry eyes in dogs “to clear up the swelling.” However, surgery is still the best treatment option because no surgical treatment can lead to reduced tear production, resulting in dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). This condition can significantly impair vision and cause discomfort for your dog.

What is cherry eye, and why do dogs develop it?

Cherry eye occurs when the third eyelid gland, responsible for tear production, prolapses due to weak connective tissue. Certain breeds, like Lhasa Apsos, are more prone to develop cherry eye due to genetic factors affecting the tissue’s strength.

What are the treatment options for cherry eye in dogs?

Treating cherry eyes typically involves surgery to reposition the prolapsed gland. While some mild cases may temporarily respond to medication, surgery is often recommended to prevent further complications. The most common surgical techniques include the pocket technique and the anchoring method.

What is the pocket technique for cherry eye surgery?

The pocket technique is a surgical approach used to treat cherry eye by creating a pocket in the tissue surrounding the gland. This allows the gland to be tucked back into place, reducing the risk of recurrence while preserving tear production.

Can cherry eye be treated without surgery?

While non-surgical options, such as anti-inflammatory medications, can reduce swelling temporarily, they do not resolve the underlying issue of weak connective tissue. Surgery is usually required for long-term treatment of cherry eye to prevent permanent damage to the eye.

Are certain breeds like Lhasa Apsos more likely to develop cherry eye?

Yes, breeds such as Lhasa Apsos are genetically predisposed to develop cherry eye due to weak connective tissue around the third eyelid gland. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent complications.

Benefits of a Raw Diet for Cane Corsos

All dogs have the same basic nutritional needs: a high-protein diet with a health ratio of fat and carbohydrates. For Cane Corsos—muscular but not particularly active or athletic dogs—finding the right dog food can be a bit of a process. You may need to experiment with different proteins, brands, and formulas before you find the one.

Rule of paw: simpler is always better with Cane Corsos, and raw foods formulas are usually made with minimal ingredients.

Two key health and nutritional needs to consider when choosing the best dog food for Cane Corso includes allergies and hip, joint, and inflammation management.

  • Allergies—Food allergies are very common in Cane Corsos, and may present as gastrointestinal upset, skin irritation, chronic ear infections, excessive licking or self-grooming, and other similar symptoms. Chicken, beef, fish, wheat, soy, corn, dairy and eggs are some of the most common foods Cane Corsos are allergic to, and unfortunately, key ingredients in many popular dog foods.
  • Raw dog food—often composed purely of animal protein, organs, and bone—can be beneficial for dogs with food allergies, and are frequently made with novel proteins that are appropriate substitutes for standard proteins like beef and chicken.
  • Pain & Inflammation—Cane Corsos are prone to developing joint, back, and inflammatory issues as they age, particularly in the hips and elbows. Feeding your Cane Corso raw food is one way you can help to nourish their bodies and protect them as they age. Of course, diet alone cannot cure, prevent, or reverse health issues like hip or elbow dysplasia, it is a key element in a balanced healthy lifestyle for your pooch.

Raw and whole food diets have been shown to promote anti-inflammatory markers in dogs, and contain key nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), chondroitin, etc., to support healthy joint function for life.

Pro Tip: No matter what kind of food you feed your Cane Corso raw diet, kibble, canned, or anything else, adding a joint supplement for dogs can help keep them feeling spry well into their golden years.
