That’s exactly what happened to Miss Nibbles, a gentle bulldog surrendered by her owner after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. (Watch Video Below)

@trueandfaithful She was suffering, and we couldn’t walk away… 🥺💔 Yesterday, we rushed to save Miss Nibbles from the shelter. She was completely alone in a crate, with cancer masses so large they drag on the ground. No one was coming for her… and she was running out of time. Her tumor weighs several pounds. She walks hunched over just to carry the weight of it. It’s heartbreaking. But the moment we saw her, we knew we couldn’t leave her behind. Despite everything, she is so sweet, so trusting, and full of love. We’re doing everything we can to give her the best life possible but her care is going to be extensive. Right now, we’ve only raised $331 of the $4,800 needed 💔 🔗Link in bio to donate or join our Patreon for behind the scenes updates on her journey 💗🐾 #adoptdontshop #rescuedog #senior #cancer ♬ Not About Angels – Birdy

She was facing the heartbreaking reality of spending her final days alone in a cold shelter kennel until one rescue refused to let that happen. When True & Faithful Pet Rescue Mission (TFPRM) heard about Miss Nibbles, they didn’t hesitate. No one else was coming for her, so they hit the road and brought her home to love, comfort, and dignity in her final chapter.

The Tumors That Weighed Her Down

Miss Nibbles was burdened by cancerous tumors so large that they dragged along the ground as she walked. They weighed several pounds, forcing her to hunch over just to move. Her condition was so heartbreaking that the shelter called out for help, and TFPRM answered without hesitation.

The moment she arrived at their sanctuary, Miss Nibbles was showered with love. She got a soothing bath, endless kisses, and even a cheeseburger, which she devoured with joy. Soon after, she was taken to the vet for a full medical evaluation, where surgery was scheduled to remove the massive tumors, estimated to cost $4,800.

Final Chapter Filled With Love

Thanks to the kindness of donors, Miss Nibbles underwent a successful surgery and is finally free from the massive tumors that once weighed her down. She’s now living out her days surrounded by love, belly rubs, and plenty of spoiling at the rescue’s sanctuary.

But her journey isn’t quite finished—TFPRM still needs $1,657 to fully cover her medical expenses. Every little bit helps, and your support can make a life-changing difference for dogs like Miss Nibbles.

If you’d like to help, you can donate by clicking on this link

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka said it best: “She may have been abandoned when she needed love the most, but Miss Nibbles is proof that every dog deserves dignity, comfort, and a second chance, even at the very end.”

Unethical Breeding Left These Exotic Bullies Facing Euthanasia—Then Everything Changed https://rockykanaka.com/exotic-bullies-were-almost-euthanized-due-to-unethical-breeding/ Wed, 14 Jan 2026 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=118608 Across the United States, overcrowded shelters force countless dogs onto euthanasia lists—not because they’re unlovable, but because no one steps forward in time. Priscilla was nearly one of those dogs. After being overbred, she was discarded and left at a shelter, her life hanging in the balance. (Watch Video Below)

@roadogsrescue Remember our sweet girl Priscilla Lilyleaf who was rescued last year? Well, she’s been living her very best life ever since finding her forever home with her amazing adopter, Chelsea! Shortly after adopting Priscilla, Chelsea welcomed another Roadogs pup into the family — our lovable Gaston, who shares a striking resemblance to his sister. 🐶💕 #dogsoftiktok #happyendings #adoptionjourney #rescuedog ♬ Beautiful Things – Benson Boone

Her severe congenital issues meant that she couldn’t even walk properly. So, the Exotic Bully dog’s fate was sealed until Roadogs Rescue decided to give this dog a shot and pulled her out of the shelter.

The Toll of Unethical Overbreeding

Priscilla had been bred so excessively and unnaturally that her body couldn’t function properly. She was so low to the ground that walking was a struggle, but her most painful issue was her stretched, sagging nipples, which dragged on the ground, causing constant discomfort and even making her trip.

After rescuing her, Southern California-based Roadogs stepped in to give her a second chance. They spent $6,500 on medical care, including spay surgery, nipple removal, and surgery for removing kidney stones. Thankfully, Priscilla’s recovery went smoothly, and for the first time in her life, she could walk without pain—soon, she was even running.

But it’s heartbreaking that a young dog like Priscilla had to endure so many surgeries just to live normally, all because of the cruel consequences of unethical overbreeding.

Two Rescue Dogs, One Happy Ending

Following her remarkable recovery, Priscilla was adopted into a loving home. Not long after, Roadogs rescued another micro bully named Gaston, who bore an uncanny resemblance to her. He too had been bred extremely low to the ground and faced similar challenges.

When Priscilla’s mom, Chelsea, saw Gaston, she couldn’t stop thinking about him. She knew in her heart he belonged with them and soon, Gaston joined the family.

Today, Priscilla and Gaston are inseparable fursiblings, living their best lives with a family that adores them. Their heartwarming transformation is enough to bring a smile to any animal lover’s face. As Chelsea puts it, “I am truly blessed to be their momma.”

It’s amazing to see two dogs who were once victims of toxic dog breeding industry, are now thriving in loving forever homes and have found companionship in each other.

Pet rescue advocate and YouTuber Rocky Kanaka is also touched by these dogs’ journey, as he says, “What happened to Priscilla and Gaston is a heartbreaking example of how unethical breeding harms innocent dogs. But their story also proves the power of rescue, love, and second chances. Watching them heal and thrive together is nothing short of inspiring.”

Left Tied on a Random Street… This Bully Dog’s Rescue Will Break You https://rockykanaka.com/left-tied-on-a-random-street-this-bully-dogs-rescue-will-break-you/ Thu, 18 Dec 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=120334 It’s a reality that crushes us anytime we think about it: some dogs may love their families so deeply and still end up betrayed by the very same humans they gave their whole hearts to.

This pretty much summarizes the life story of Wonder Woman, a Bully breed who, not so long ago, was left tied up along a street sidewalk by someone she considered family. While it’s not clear how long she had been there, it was obvious that Wonder Woman had been abandoned intentionally. No note was left behind, and there wasn’t a single food or water bowl in sight. (Watch Video Below)

@nycacc Once found tied up on the street, Wonder Woman is now living her best life as Bahama the Bronx Bully — queen of the couch, master of the “awoo,” and collector of a thousand toys. Visit nycacc.app to browse available pets or stop by Queens, Manhattan, or Staten Island ACC during adoption hours — your Bahama might be waiting! #nycacc #boroughbred #ACCHappyTail #QueensACC ♬ growth – Gede Yudis

Wonder Woman, as sweet as she is, was tossed away like her life didn’t matter. Luckily, the NYPD came to her aid after being alerted about her, and they swiftly transported her to Queens Animal Care Center (ACC).

The Struggle to Adjust

Source: www.tiktok.com/@nycacc

While at the shelter, it didn’t take long for staff members to notice how heartbroken Wonder Woman was. Her heartbreak wasn’t the loud, dramatic kind. It was silent, which made it even harder for those around her to witness.

Wonder Woman spent her days frozen in shock in her kennel, all while avoiding eye contact with anyone who came to check up on her. She always kept to herself, but the sorrow on her face couldn’t go unnoticed. Wonder Woman was struggling to accept her new reality, and understandably so.

Though Wonder Woman was emotionally shut down, her brokenness did not, at any point, put off the shelter’s staff members. In fact, one staff member in particular, Jaylen, felt drawn to Wonder Woman; there was just something about her that Jaylen couldn’t shake off.

Each time Jaylen looked at Wonder Woman, she didn’t see a “difficult” dog. What she saw was a dog who’d been let down in the worst way possible and had no strength getting back up on her own. Realizing this, Jaylen took it upon herself to kickstart Wonder Woman’s healing journey.

A Bond Like No Other

Source: www.tiktok.com/@nycacc

Jaylen would spend time with Wonder Woman every single day. She was patient and understanding enough to know that this sweet pup wasn’t going to come around immediately. Jaylen allowed Wonder Woman to open up at her own pace; she did not put any pressure on her at any given point

Amazingly, every moment they spent together made Wonder Woman soften up a little more on the inside. Then slowly by slowly, she began to feel safe around Jaylen. Wonder Woman started to come out of her shell, and as this was unfolding, Jaylen had already made a life-changing decision: to take Wonder Woman home, for good.

Jaylen didn’t need any convincing that Wonder Woman needed a second chance. She signed the adoption papers without thinking twice, giving this sweet pup the happy ending she never imagined would find her.

Wonder Woman Living Her Best Life

Source: www.tiktok.com/@nycacc

Now renamed Bahama Mama, Wonder Woman’s life has taken a beautiful turn. Her spark — which was almost dimmed completely by heartbreak — is back in full blast, and she’s the happiest she’s ever been.

Wonder Woman’s heart is overflowing with pure joy, all thanks to Jaylen. She’s ever rocking an ear-to-ear smile, dishing out affection like it’s her sole purpose in life, and sniffing every leaf she comes across during walks. This bubbly sweetheart of a girl wakes up each day with one agenda in mind: to make every moment of her second chance count.

Wonder Woman’s sad, broken days are all behind her, and honestly, it’s a happy ending we wish upon every abandoned dog.

Overbred Until Her Body Gave Out This Mistreated Mama Dog’s Transformation Will Make You Cry Happy Tears https://rockykanaka.com/overbred-until-her-body-gave-out-this-mistreated-mama-dogs-transformation-will-make-you-cry-happy-tears/ Sun, 19 Oct 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=129313 When Winnie, a 5-year-old English Bulldog first arrived in her new home about two months ago, she was a broken soul who didn’t believe humans could be kind or loving.

You see, Winnie had spent all her life in a puppy mill, where love, kindness, and comfort were non-existent. For years, this unbelievably sweet mama dog was under the care of profit-hungry humans who reduced her worth to a breeding machine. They repeatedly made Winnie carry pregnancies that took a mighty toll on her, not just physically, but emotionally, too. Winnie never got a chance to catch a break because her value was strictly tied to the number of litters she churned out. (Watch Video Below)

@aubrayannpugh Watch til the end to see this sweet girls transformation 💜 #englishbulldog #dogsoftiktok #puppiesoftiktok #transformation #rescuedog ♬ original sound – WBsongs

When Winnie’s extremely overbred body eventually gave out, the people responsible left her dumped on a mattress on the side of the road. The rescuers who found Winnie didn’t struggle to piece together her backstory because her nipples told them everything they needed to know. Winnie’s nipples were so long and heavy that they stretched to the ground, a cruel sign of the countless times she’d been overbred.

The Struggle to Trust

During the early days in her new home, Winnie carried a deep sadness in her eyes that broke the hearts of her new family. She’d spent most of her time inside her crate because she wasn’t sure that humans could be trusted.

Thankfully, Winnie’s new family was patient & understanding enough to know that she needed time to come out of her shell. As time went by, Winnie started to feel safe enough to interact with her humans & explore her new home. But despite trying so hard to embrace her new beginning wholeheartedly, her overstretched nipples made everything difficult. Every brave step that Winnie took felt awfully uncomfortable because the coarse ground would scrape against her already-sore mammary glands. Not to mention, the extra weight from her heavy nipples made walking feel like a chore.

Winnie’s new mom couldn’t bear seeing her sweet pup struggle to this extent, so she consulted a vet who recommended a full mastectomy, along with a spay surgery

Goodbye Suffering….

According to experts, a full mastectomy is a surgical procedure involving the complete removal of a dog’s mammary glands, particularly when there’s a risk for tumors or serious infections. Generally, mastectomy is a common treatment approach for dogs diagnosed with mammary tumors.

In Winnie’s case, a mastectomy was necessary since her overstretched nipples put her at great risk of mammary tumors & life-threatening infections such as mastitis. Thankfully, this surgery was a success. Though the recovery journey wasn’t easy on Winnie, something beautiful happened during this healing period: she fully accepted her human as her safe space. Winnie allowed her human to hand-feed her & pamper her, a sign that she had chosen to let go of her trust issues for good.

With every passing week post-surgery, Winnie’s body became stronger & her real personality started to blossom. It’s now several weeks since her surgery, & sweet Winnie has healed completely. In fact, Winnie is the happiest & healthiest she’s ever been. Her incredible transformation was captured in a recent heartwarming TikTok video that’s melted hearts online.

From Broken to Whole

For the first time in years, Winnie can now comfortably walk & run without the weight of her cruel past dragging her behind. But the best part about her healing is that it’s beyond physical. The painful emotional scars that held her heart captive for years have disappeared. Winnie has transformed into a vibrant, goofy dog who lives & loves so hard, you’d think she’s never been hurt.

When she’s not entertaining her mom with her clownish antics, she’s busy begging for endless belly rubs with her paws hanging up in the air. At last, Winnie is in a home that adores & values her. Even though she endured a lifetime of pain that she didn’t deserve, it’s comforting to know that she now has a lifetime of joy ahead of her.

Watch the Moment I Figure Out WHY This American Bulldog is Hiding in the Shelter https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-107-chelsea/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 21:37:06 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=126946 I walked into the kennel row and found a blocky-headed beauty tucked behind her cot, trying to disappear. No kennel card. No info. Just wrinkles, worry, and a pair of eyes that felt 20 pounds heavy. We’d learn later she’d arrived overnight with a male bulldog found running near the Lake Elsinore baseball stadium. For now, I sat down on the floor and did what I do—waited, watched, and offered a treat.

She took it. Chomped like a tiny wood chipper. Progress.

Meet Chelsea (Yep, She Picked Her Name)

We were joking around with names and I tossed out “Chelsea.” Her head lifted. Ears flicked. Tail did that low, hopeful swish. Sometimes a name is just a sound. Sometimes it lands like, “I see you.” From that moment on, she was Chelsea.

Backstory: Stadium Stray, Tired Mama

Chelsea came in with a male who might be her mate. No microchips reported yet. Health Check flagged scrapes, a laceration near her shoulder blade, dry/cracked nose, and possible eye discharge. Once she stood up, the bigger picture clicked: she’d very recently had puppies. That heavy sadness? Mama dogs feel it when their babies are gone. It’s a grief you can hear in a sigh.

Breed Notes: American Bulldog Mix (With a Dash of English?)

Chelsea’s a squat, sturdy “short-stack”—very likely an American Bulldog mix, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a little English Bulldog in there. Bully breeds wear their history in their wrinkles: the eyebrow lift that takes effort, the bulldozer lean that says “you do the work,” the stubbornness that’s actually courage in slow motion. They’re affectionate, comical, and loyal—but they can be sensitive, especially after trauma.

The First Wins: Curiosity, Treats & Toys

Curiosity is the bridge out of fear. Chelsea had it. She sniffed my elbow—tiny moment, big meaning. Treats helped (bully jaws = “place it on the snout shelf and release”). Then we tried toys. At first, she stared like, “What do I do with this?” Dogs used for breeding often don’t learn to play. But the spark was there, and when a squeaky frog appeared, her whole face softened.

Love Letters (and a Mail-Day Miracle)

We opened “Love Letters to Dogs”—care packages from folks who watch the show:

  • From Denise & Jim (Mount Zion, IL): toys for shelter dogs. Perfect timing.
  • From Neil (Scotland): blankets and balls…and a reminder that kindness travels far.

Chelsea lit up. It wasn’t chaos (bulldogs don’t “explode,” they bloom). It was quiet joy: investigating the crinkle, testing the bounce, leaning her big, heavy head into my hand like it weighed a gallon of milk.

Health Check & Comfort Care

Quick summary of what helped Chelsea feel better fast:

  • Nose relief: a gentle balm (think dog-safe “chapstick”) on her cracked nose. It can sting at first—go slow, reward after.
  • Skin/coat love: she’ll benefit from a calming oatmeal bath and regular brushing.
  • Nails: not awful, not ideal—easy trim when she’s settled.
  • Nutrition: post-pregnancy bodies need real fuel. High-quality food + DHA/omega-3s can lift energy and support recovery.

Training Tips: What Chelsea Taught Me in One Sit

Follow curiosity.
When a shut-down dog sniffs, glances, or scoots closer, reflect it back: “I see that. Good choice.” Curiosity is the safest next step after fear.

Treat mechanics for bullies.
Place the treat gently on the “lip shelf,” palm flat, and let her take it. No poking or quick drops near the eyes.

Introduce toys like a new language.
Start with soft squeaks. Roll it, tap it, make it “prey,” then pause. Reward any nose touch or paw target.

Affection on her timeline.
Slide in sideways, keep your voice low and steady, and ask before touching. The permission lean is your green light.

Stubborn ≠ bad.
Bulldogs often won’t move out of your way. That’s okay—reposition yourself instead of pushing. Meet them where they are.

Learning Opportunities for Families

  • Reading the room: A tail wag can be nervous. Watch the whole dog—ears, breath, tension, weight shift.
  • Slow is smooth. Let the dog “opt in.” Stop while the getting’s good to keep the session positive.
  • Grief in mama dogs is real. Expect quiet, low energy, and searching. Routine, gentle enrichment, and scent-based games help a ton.
  • Name magic. If a dog perks to a sound, try it again with warmth. Whether it’s memory or just vibe, if it helps them feel seen, use it.

The Scoop on Chelsea

  • Type: American Bulldog mix (possible English Bulldog sprinkle)
  • Sex: Female
  • Age: Likely middle-aged (exact age pending dental check)
  • Backstory: Found running near a stadium with a male; recently had puppies
  • Health notes: Scrapes/laceration near shoulder blade, cracked/dry nose, possible eye discharge; needs a soothing bath and TLC
  • Personality: Soft, stubborn, curious; food-motivated; toy-interested; melts with calm affection

Where We Landed

By the end of our sit, Chelsea was drowsing to my voice, leaning into pets, and showing real interest in toys. Health Check got her in. Mail-day filled her kennel with hope. Most important: she felt safe enough to be herself.

Next Steps (How You Can Help)

  1. Adopt or foster Chelsea. If you’re bully-breed savvy and love snorts, naps, and noodle-limbs, she’s your girl.
  2. Send a “Love Letter.” Toys, blankets, chews—addressed to “Chelsea” or the dog I’m sitting with—go straight to joy.
  3. Share her story. One share can be the bridge to a forever home.
  4. Learn & lend a hand. If you can’t adopt, volunteer: wash bowls, fold laundry, walk dogs—the little things add up big.

Chelsea walked in sad and nameless. She walked out with a name and a plan. That’s the power of sitting with dogs… and the power of people who care.

She May Have Cropped Ears & a Funny-Looking Tongue, But Her Love Is Like No Other https://rockykanaka.com/she-may-have-cropped-ears-a-funny-looking-tongue-but-her-love-is-like-no-other/ Sun, 17 Aug 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=125043 If you could ask every staff member at the Humane Society of Broward County to mention the friendliest dogs under their care, one name would come up too many times: Lickitung.

5-year-old Lickitung — or Licki, as she’s fondly nicknamed — is the type of dog who’ll prove to you, from the moment you meet her, that she’s an absolute lovebug. But once you learn her backstory, you’ll immediately realize that her sweet personality is nothing short of extraordinary. It’s hard to believe that this lovely American Bulldog is a pup full of love despite the harrowing experiences she’s been through. (Watch Video Below)

@humanebroward We love her anyway… and so will you! ❤️🙏 5-year-old Lickitung (aka Licki) is really going through it 🥺 First of all, before she came to us she lived with 11 other dogs! We’re not sure if it was a breeding operation, but Licki has definitely had her share of puppies 😔 When she arrived she was suffering from ear infections, skin allergies and had to undergo entropic surgery to her eyelids ❤️‍🩹 She also has crusty skin where her ears were cropped and her tongue always hangs out of her mouth 🥺 Despite all of this, Licki is one of the friendliest and most loving dogs you will meet ❤️ She’s good with all people (even babies) and all dog personalities, and she is ok with cats. She knows commands like sit, lay and go, will go on short walks only, and she loves to eat everything (although her skin allergies may limit what she can eat). She’s very affectionate and mostly just wants to be close to you getting belly rubs ❤️ Lickitung will likely be prone to reoccuring ear infections, so at home maintenance (e.g. ear cleanings) and veterinary care may be needed if infections recur ❤️‍🩹 Can you help this happy girl on her journey to good health? Licki is ready to fill your home with love and laughter! ❤️ If you can’t adopt, please share her post 🙏 To meet Lickitung or any other pet, please complete a pre-adoption application at www.humanebroward.com (link in bio) and then stop by. A Life of Pain & Neglect

Before coming to the shelter, Licki endured a miserable life. She spent years living in a cramped space crowded with 11 other dogs; life was chaotic, stressful, and unkind to her. Nobody cared about Licki’s comfort, health, or happiness. The shelter suspects Licki was repeatedly used for breeding, her value as a dog reduced to the number of puppies her body could churn out.

When Licki was finally rescued and brought to the Humane Society, the years of neglect were evident. She had painful ear infections, untreated skin allergies, and eyelid problems that made it hard for her to blink without experiencing pain. Licki’s ears had also been cropped, leaving the remaining skin dry and crusty.

Source: www.tiktok.com/@humanebroward

What stood out most about Licki was the state of her tongue. Her entire tongue hung out on the side of her mouth, and though the shelter couldn’t tell what exactly led to this, they quickly embraced it as Licki’s most endearing quirks.

Thankfully, Licki underwent surgery to correct her eyelid problems. She also received treatment for her ear infections and skin allergies, and as we speak, she’s way much better health-wise.

A Lover Girl Through & Through

Licki has no limits on how much she can trust and adore people. Despite the neglect she endured at the hands of uncaring humans, Licki arrived at the shelter with a heart wide open to give and receive love. She sees every human as her safe space; she’s always the happiest girl when around someone.

Source: www.tiktok.com/@humanebroward

Trust us, when you hang out with Licki, everything about her will make you smile a little too hard: her signature tongue, her red merle coat, and the way she flops over in surrender once you begin to scratch her belly. Licki is a true example of a soul who embraces every ounce of kindness without hesitation because she had gone for far too long without experiencing it. And now, she’s at a point in life where she craves to start afresh in a loving home that she can call her own.

Please Give Licki a Forever Home

Ever met a dog who gets along with literally anyone and everyone? That’s Licki for you. She’s great with babies, small children, adults, cats, other dogs — you name it! What we’re trying to say is, Licki doesn’t discriminate against who gets a space in her big heart.

She’s well-mannered, knows commands, loves short walks, and would prefer to add peace rather than chaos to your life. Licki is simply asking for a family that will love and care for her endlessly. She knows she’s far from perfect — she’s prone to recurring ear infections and might need a special diet because of her allergies. But all she yearns for is someone to see past her imperfections because she’s the easiest dog to love. We’re not even exaggerating; she truly is.

If you’re searching for a dog who will adore you in a way that no one has before, give Licki a chance. To adopt Licki, learn more here.

Bulldog Mama Found Alone and in Agony—Rescuers Shocked by What Was Inside Her https://rockykanaka.com/bulldog-mama-found-alone-and-in-agony-rescuers-shocked-by-what-was-inside-her/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=123339 Wilma Wonderbelle’s story is one of heartbreak, survival, and unimaginable strength. This sweet mama Bulldog was found abandoned, in heat and pregnant, left to fend for herself with no one to help her. When California-based Roadogs Rescue stepped in, they didn’t just rescue her; they saved her life. (Watch Video Above)

Tragically, all of Wilma’s puppies had died before she could be rescued. Some were still inside her, causing her intense pain and a life-threatening infection. She arrived at the rescue in a critical state, her frail body oozing brown and bloody discharge. Emergency surgery saved her life, but just barely, as she went into septic shock and remained hospitalized on IV fluids for several days.

Dog’s Body Tells a Story of Cruelty

Wilma’s body tells a heartbreaking story of neglect and exploitation. A small incision on her stomach, with stitching now turned blue, suggests that someone may have attempted to remove her puppies and failed. Her uterus, scarred and misshapen, shows signs of previous trauma and at least one past C-section

Source: Instagram

It’s painfully clear that Wilma was used for breeding, likely over and over again, until her body gave out. When she could no longer produce, she was discarded like she didn’t matter.

By the time she was rescued, her condition was so dire that her vet believes she wouldn’t have survived another 12 hours. But thanks to the quick intervention of Roadogs Rescue and the generosity of its supporters, Wilma received the emergency care she desperately needed.

After receiving the lifesaving treatment due to the generosity of the rescue’s donors, the dog is now healing at a loving foster home. She is learning to enjoy life with her foster dad, Claude.

Uncertain Future For Wilma

Although Wilma is now safe and surrounded by love, her journey is far from over. She’s still facing a number of complex health challenges, the most serious being a rare bladder condition. Because of this, it’s uncertain whether Wilma will go on to live a normal, full life, or if she may eventually need hospice care.

Pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka states, “What Wilma went through is unthinkable, but what’s even more powerful is her will to live. She’s proof that love, when given at the right time, can save a life.”

Her story has touched thousands. A recent post about Wilma on Roadogs Rescue’s Instagram received over 6,000 likes, with supporters flooding the comments to show their love. One user, Noreen McMullen, wrote, “Thank you for rescuing Wilma and giving her the care to save her life. I’m so sorry about her puppies ❤️🙏🙏❤️.”

Watch Shelter Dogs Emotional Reaction Seeing Her Leash https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-96-fiona/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 14:28:29 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=116567 When I first saw this little English bulldog sitting in her kennel, my heart broke. I’ve encountered countless dogs in shelters, but there was something about Fiona that stopped me in my tracks. Her eyes held such profound sadness that I couldn’t walk away.

The Face of Despair

English bulldogs are supposed to be the definition of sweet, loyal, and eager companions. They’re bred to be happy family dogs, even if they can be a bit stubborn in their loving way. But when you see a dog specifically bred for companionship looking so broken and shut down, you can’t help but stop and wonder what went wrong.

Sitting With Dogs 96 Fiona

Fiona couldn’t even hold her head up. She was so sad that she wouldn’t move onto the blanket I had brought for her comfort. I’ve seen a lot of dogs in despair at shelters, but I never stop being surprised when I encounter purebred dogs in such a state. Your whole life, you build this image of what a breed should be like, and then you see them completely devastated.

Building Trust Through Treats

I knew I had to take my time with Fiona. Sitting down beside her kennel, I started with treats – a universal language that can help dogs focus on something positive and release their fear. When dogs are scared, getting them to focus on their nose, the sniffing, and the taste can be incredibly powerful.

Sitting With Dogs 96 Fiona

I decided to try what I call the “Pac-Man” technique – laying out a trail of treats to encourage her to move and show some bravery. Because English bulldogs are typically food-motivated, I hoped she’d have the courage to follow the trail. It worked, slowly but surely. She took the treats, though hesitantly, and I could see she was willing to give me a chance.

Uncovering Fiona’s Story

While working with Fiona, I gathered information about her background. She was estimated to be about three years old and had been found overnight by a Good Samaritan. The finder had posted on social media, but no one claimed her. She had no microchip and no collar – just a leash that suggested she might have been brought in hastily.

When Fiona arrived at the shelter, they immediately scheduled her for a veterinary visit because something seemed off. The diagnosis revealed a prolapse that suggested she was a mama dog who had been used for breeding – likely experiencing a rough birth. This explained so much about her condition and demeanor.

The Harsh Reality of Backyard Breeding

Sitting With Dogs 96 Fiona

Looking at Fiona’s unique coloring and the evidence of her medical condition, I couldn’t help but conclude that she was a mama dog who had been used by backyard breeders. People pay thousands – sometimes tens of thousands – of dollars for what they think are rare designer bulldogs, while mama dogs like Fiona sit sadly in shelters after their puppies are sold.

The scarring on her ears, flea dirt, and dirty coat told a story of neglect. Her reaction to toys suggested she had never owned one. When I showed her the collar that came with her, she sniffed it and then turned away – not the excited reaction you’d expect from a beloved pet seeing familiar items.

A Breakthrough Moment

After learning about her need for surgery, I decided to pay for her spay procedure. Every dog deserves proper medical care, and I couldn’t bear the thought of her suffering any longer. Then came the moment I’d been waiting for – I scooped Fiona into my lap.

She was heavy and awkward at first, clearly never having been held like this before. You can feel it in a dog when they’ve never experienced this kind of affection. Her massive head needed support, and I could tell her jaw muscles were sore from the tension she’d been carrying.

Positive Affirmations and a New Name

Sitting With Dogs 96 Fiona

I started giving Fiona positive affirmations, telling her she was a good girl and that she was loved. I watched her eyes for any recognition of these words, but there was little response – further evidence that she had rarely, if ever, heard such encouragement.

We named her Fiona, and I began using her name in our interactions. I told her about the life that awaited her – snuggling on couches, getting in trouble for chewing remotes that smell like potato chips, and being part of a loving family. She deserved to know that her hardest days were behind her.

The Patience Required

If you’re considering adopting a dog like Fiona, understand that it will take time – possibly months – for her to learn how to be a dog. She may not know how to walk downstairs or drink from a water bowl. These are experiences she might never have had. Above all else, she’ll need patience, assurance, and confidence-building.

Dogs who have experienced the worst often develop the deepest capacity for love and loyalty. They know what it’s like to have nothing, so when you show them a life filled with love, toys, treats, and care, they become forever grateful. The connection you’ll develop is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced.

Sitting With Dogs 96 Fiona

A Glimmer of Hope

After our session, I received footage from the shelter that filled my heart with joy. Fiona had been paired with other dogs in the indoor area and taken out to the yard by volunteers. The transformation was remarkable – there was my sad little girl with a happy face, surrounded by other dogs and people, finally showing the amazing sweetheart she truly is.

The Call to Action

Fiona is available for adoption and represents an incredible opportunity for the right family. Instead of paying thousands to backyard breeders, someone can adopt this beautiful, rare, and special girl for just the adoption fee and spay cost. She has so much love to give and deserves a family who will give her the life she’s never had.

This is why I do what I do – to show that every dog, regardless of their past, deserves a chance at happiness. Fiona’s story isn’t unique, but her capacity for love and transformation is limitless. She just needs someone to believe in her.

The hardest part is over, Fiona. Now it’s time for your new beginning.

Chubby English Bulldog Sisters Found Wandering Wine Country—What Happened Just Days Later Surprised Everyone https://rockykanaka.com/chubby-english-bulldog-sisters-found-wandering-wine-country-what-happened-just-days-later-surprised-everyone/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=111795 Adoptions can take weeks, months, or even years for shelter dogs, but sometimes, the perfect match happens almost instantly. That was the case for Rollie and Pollie, two English Bulldog sisters who were found wandering California’s wine country. After arriving at American Friends of the Valleys, the duo stole hearts during a shelter livestream and were adopted into a loving home within just one week. (Watch video below)

@afvpets

Found roaming around wine country, these big-boned English Bulldog sisters had a short stay at the shelter. Hurray for Rollie and Pollie! Let’s give some other animals their happily ever afters – come down and check out our adoptable pets today!

Diets, Love, and Forever Happiness

When Rollie and Pollie arrived at the shelter, it was clear they were carrying extra weight, so the staff immediately put them on a diet to help them slim down. After being placed on a stray hold, volunteers Phil and Sharyl introduced the English Bulldog sisters to potential adopters during the shelter’s ‘Lunchtime Live’ stream.

All these two wanted was a safe, comfortable home together. The shelter staff hoped for the same, though they knew how rare it is for bonded pairs to find a family willing to adopt both.

But luck was on Rollie and Pollie’s side. A family saw them on the livestream and fell in love. Within a few days, the inseparable duo was adopted — and best of all, they went to the same loving home, where they’ll spend the rest of their lives side by side. The couple was elated to be adding these two lovebugs to their family.

Happy Ending For Bulldog Sisters

The shelter volunteers couldn’t have imagined a happier ending for the adorable bulldog sisters. They shared the joyful news on TikTok, writing, “We’re so glad Rollie and Pollie found their forever home!”

Along with the announcement, they encouraged viewers to check out the other dogs still waiting at the shelter for a family to call their own.

For Rollie and Pollie, the search for safety, comfort, and love ended exactly the way it was meant to — side by side. Their journey from wandering the streets to curling up in a home of their own proves that sometimes, fate has a way of bringing the right hearts together. While these two have found their perfect match, many other shelter dogs are still patiently waiting for theirs.

“When you adopt, you’re not just saving a life — you’re making room for unconditional love. Rollie and Pollie found that love together, and every shelter dog deserves the same chance,” asserts pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka.

These colors are not unique to merle French bulldogs. There are many standard French bulldogs colors, including:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • Brindle
  • Chocolate
  • Cream
  • Faun
  • Tan

While merle is one of the most coveted, you can also find spotted and sable French bulldogs. All of these classifications are descriptions of coloration, which means that all of these pups will be purebred French bulldogs.

How Are Merle Frenchies Bred?

Responsible breeders sire merle pups by mixing one merle French bulldog with a non-merle French bulldog. For example, a merle mother might be bred with a father that has a solid-colored coat and does not carry the merle gene. While this process does not guarantee that all (or any) of the puppies will be merle, it ensures that the genes responsible for this stunning coloration are passed on while avoiding harmful side effects.

Irresponsible breeders may breed two merle dogs together, which can result in a “double merle” puppy, which will often have multiple disabilities. Double merle dogs are often blind and deaf. These pups are then sold at high prices, and their disabilities may not be disclosed to future owners, so it is so important to do your research and find responsible breeders.

Merle French Bulldog FAQ

A Merle French Bulldog

If you’ve ever had any questions about French bulldogs, then this is the place to be! I’ve rounded up the top questions about merle French bulldogs and answered them in this handy FAQ.

Are Merle French Bulldogs Purebred?

Yes. A true merle French bulldog will be the result of two purebred French bulldogs. Merle is not a separate breed; rather, it’s a classification for a pup’s patterning. You can also find merle shepherds, spaniels, and so on!

How Much Is A Merle French Bulldog?

You can expect to pay $7,500–$20,000 for a merle French bulldog. The high cost is associated with the rarity of these pups’ gorgeous coats. Reputable breeders will also charge more to cover appropriate check-ups and care.

Are Merle French Bulldogs Unhealthy?

Properly bred merle French bulldogs should not have any birth defects or genetic conditions, but double merle Frenchies may be at risk for blindness and hearing issues.

A standard merle French bulldog will be at risk of a number of conditions commonly found in the breed:

  • Ear infections
  • Breathing issues
  • Digestive issues
  • Mobility problems
  • Skin problems
  • Spinal problems

How Do I Know If My French Bulldog Is Merle?

A Merle French Bulldog

A merle French bulldog can be distinguished by its coat. If your pup has the lovely mottled color and pattern, then they’re probably a merle. Many merle dogs will also have pinkish spots on their nose. Most have dark-colored eyes, but this is not a steadfast rule. Some merles have lighter eyes, and others may be born with eyes that are different colors!

You can also get your pup a genetic test to double-check if they’re a merle. If you purchase a merle French bulldog from a responsible breeder, you’ll be told if your pup is a merle. You can also request genetic information from the breeder, which can be used to confirm that your pup is a true merle.

Does AKC Recognize Merle French Bulldogs?

Yes. The merle French bulldog is recognized by the AKC but does not consider merle a standard coloration for the breed.

What Is A Double Merle French Bulldog?

A double merle French bulldog is the result of two merle dogs being bred together. Double merles will often inherit genetic mutations as a result of having two merle genes, and many double merle dogs will be blind and/or deaf. Double merle dogs are also prone to low-pigmentation and may be more sensitive to the sun and more susceptible to skin conditions.

To avoid supporting irresponsible breeders, do your research! Make sure that you acquire your next pup from a responsible and respected breeder. These folks truly care about their dogs, and they perform rigorous genetic tests to ensure that every puppy is as healthy as possible.

You can spot a good breeder by making sure they meet the following expectations:

  • Are active areas — such as grassy lawns for play — visible?
  • Are visitors allowed to meet the puppy’s parents?
  • Do their dogs have appropriate paperwork?
  • Do they allow visitors to see other dogs and their living conditions?
  • Do they have a waiting list?

You can also adopt a pup from your local shelter! While a merle French bulldog will be a rare find, you might just hit the puppy jackpot. If you decide to adopt, keep an open mind. You may just find a new furry friend that isn’t a merle French bulldog!

How is the merle color created in French Bulldogs?

To create the merle color in a Frenchie, breeders usually crossbreed with a different breed, commonly merle chihuahuas, to get the gene they are looking for. This means that merle Frenchies may not be a pure breed

Where did the merle gene originate?

The merle gene is believed to have originated in certain herding breeds, such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. It is a naturally occurring gene mutation that affects the distribution of pigment in the dog’s coat.
In dogs, this variegated pattern is caused by an insertion of a SINE element into the canine PMEL gene.

Over time, this gene has been introduced into other breeds through crossbreeding. In the case of French Bulldogs, the merle gene may have been introduced through intentional or unintentional crossbreeding with other breeds carrying the merle gene. It’s important to note that responsible breeders carefully manage the presence of the merle gene to prevent potential health issues associated with its expression.

What should I feed my Merle French Bulldog puppy?

A raw dog food diet can be beneficial for your Merle French Bulldog puppy. A raw dog food diet typically consists of muscle meat (often still on the bone), bones (either whole or ground), organ meats (such as livers and kidneys), raw eggs, vegetables (like broccoli, spinach, and celery), apples or other fruit, and some dairy (such as yogurt). What are some different color varieties of Merle French Bulldogs?

Frenchies with a merle coat come in a range of colors including Blue Merle and Lilac Merle. Blue Frenchies have a black coat that is diluted to create a ‘blue’ type of color. The blue base coat color has more of a blue tint than a true blue color and is very unique against the darker patches of pigment. Lilac hue comes from a combination of the brown and blue coat colors. The blue coat is further diluted, creating a beautiful, unique coat with a slight lilac appearance

What is a Harlequin Merle French Bulldog?

A Harlequin Merle French Bulldog is a color variation that combines the harlequin and merle coat patterns. These dogs have a marbled or splotchy coat with larger patches of color and may exhibit variations in shades and markings.

What is a Cryptic Merle French Bulldog?

A Cryptic Merle French Bulldog, also known as a hidden merle or phantom merle, refers to a dog that carries the merle gene but does not display the typical merle coat pattern. These dogs may have a solid coat color, but they carry the potential to produce merle offspring when bred with another merle.

Can White Merle French Bulldogs exist?

No, White Merle French Bulldogs do not exist. The merle gene affects the distribution of pigment in the coat, resulting in variations of color and pattern, but it does not produce a completely white coat. Merle French Bulldogs may have white markings or patches in their coat, but they are not entirely white.
