Harley, a petite three-and-a-half-year-old Boxer, was frozen. She wasn’t barking or lunging; she was simply vibrating with a fear so dense it looked like a fog had settled over her. Every muscle in her hindquarters was shaking.

As a rescue advocate, I have learned that fear shrinks the moment you move toward it, but you have to move slowly. Boxers are incredibly sensitive, emotional dogs. When they are in this state, their bodies are flooded with cortisol, which can lead to reactive behavior if not handled with extreme care. I tried to offer a treat, but she was too shut down to even notice it. It breaks my heart when a dog is so traumatized they can’t even accept a gift.

A Sibling Connection Revealed

There was no information on Harley’s kennel card when I arrived, but my colleague Alexis began digging into the records. What she found was a reality check on why these dogs end up in the shelter system. Harley had been surrendered only three hours earlier because her owners were moving.

The most critical detail, however, was that Harley didn’t come alone. She was surrendered alongside her brother, Diesel. They had been together since they were puppies, purchased from a breeder three years ago. In the chaos of the intake process, they had been separated for health checks. Harley wasn’t just scared of the shelter; she was grieving the sudden loss of her home and her lifelong companion.

The Power of Reassurance

I spent time speaking softly to Harley, using positive affirmations to let her know this wasn’t her fault. I carried my soul dog Flip’s tags with me, a reminder of the loyalty this breed is capable of. Eventually, Harley allowed me to pet her. She remained tense, but the stress-panting began to slow.

I knew that if we didn’t intercept her fear now, she might stay tucked in the shadows of the kennel, making her much less likely to be adopted. Statistics tell us that dogs who greet visitors at the front of the gate find homes faster. To give her that chance, I knew we had to reunite her with Diesel.

Reunited and a Path to the Farm

When I brought Diesel into the kennel, the change was instantaneous. The two siblings immediately sandwiched together, leaning into each other for support. Diesel was the more outgoing of the two, acting as a natural leader for his sister. While they were both dirty and clearly lacked recent care—showing signs of “fish scale” noses and chapped lips—their spirits began to lift the moment they were back together.

My wife, Kelly, and I made a quick decision. We were going to pull them both to Flip Farms. Our farm is specifically designed for dogs like this to rehabilitate and heal in a quiet, green environment far away from the clanging metal and barking of the shelter.

A Fresh Start Through Grooming

Before heading to the farm, I asked the shelter groomer, Mel, to step in. For dogs like Harley and Diesel, a bath is more than just hygiene; it’s a sensory reset. Mel worked her magic, starting with Diesel. Even with the “scary monster” blow dryer, he stood like a champion.

Harley was more apprehensive, but seeing her brother return clean and calm gave her the courage to follow Mel. When they were finished, they looked like different dogs. Their coats were shining, their white patches were crisp, and they stood taller. They were finally carrying themselves with a bit of confidence.

The Journey Home

Carrying them out to my truck was a heavy moment. They didn’t know they were safe yet, but I did. As we drove toward the farm, Diesel eventually popped his head up to look out the window, his ears flopping in the wind.

We got them settled into their own personal “doggy condo” at the farm, a quiet Quonset hut filled with soft beds and toys. Here, they can decompress at their own speed. Whether it takes two weeks or nine months, they will stay with us until we find the perfect family to adopt them as a pair. This is why we grow our coffee and build this community—so that dogs like Harley and Diesel never have to be alone in the fog again.

Next Steps

If you want to adopt Harley & Diesel

They’re going to be available for adoption after decompression and vet follow-ups. If you’re serious about giving them the kind of home they deserved all along, get your application in early. The right match matters more than the fastest match.

If you want to help but can’t adopt

  • Share their story. One share can reach the person who says, “That’s my dog.”
  • Support the work through Flip Coffee. That’s how we keep doing this without waiting on miracles.

Because these two? They’re not just rescue cases.

They’re the first Flip Farms dogs of 2026.

And I can already see the version of them that’s coming back.

Frenchie’s Seizure Would Have Cost His Life, But His Boxer Brother Does Something Unbelievable https://rockykanaka.com/frenchies-seizure-would-have-cost-his-life-but-his-boxer-brother-does-something-unbelievable/ Sat, 31 May 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=115785 When Yogi, a French Bulldog had a dangerous seizure at home, help didn’t come from a human, but from his unlikely hero: Reggie, his Boxer fursibling. With no one else around, Reggie stepped up in the most extraordinary way, keeping Yogi safe until their family returned. (Watch Video Below)

@cbsnews When Yogi, a French bulldog, had a seizure at home with no human around, Reggie, a boxer dog, stepped in for the rescue. Sarah McArdle Strilka said Yogi suffers from “severe epilepsy.” But as soon as Reggie saw him start to seize, he jumped in to help, and Strilka said he was able to keep Yogi alive for three hours straight, despite having only been present for Yogi’s epilepsy attacks once before. “If it wasn’t for Reggie, Yogi would not be alive today,” she said. #frenchbulldog #boxerdog #connecticut #milford ♬ original sound – cbsnews

Camera Caught Reggie’s Act of Bravery

Yogi suffers from severe epilepsy, and he had one of his seizures when the furbabies were completely alone at home for over three hours. The entire scene was caught on a live camera, recording Reggie becoming the true savior.

As soon as Yogi’s seizure began, Reggie immediately sprang into action. He kept on touching and nuzzling him. When the Frenchie lay down on the floor and couldn’t even move, Reggie pawed at him, moved him around, and made sure his brother remained conscious.

CBS News reports on TikTok that according to the the dogs’ owner, Sarah McArdle Strilka, Reggie had only witnessed one of Yogi’s seizures before. But still, he handled the situation like a pro, and it’s all because of him that Yogi is breathing today.

Boxer Won Hearts on TikTok

Reggie’s actions were nothing short of extraordinary. In a moment of crisis, with no humans around, he relied on instinct, loyalty, and emotional intelligence to care for his brother in the best way he knew how. His calm presence and determination likely made all the difference for Yogi.

What he did wasn’t just brave—it was deeply compassionate. Reggie showed the world that dogs are more than pets; they’re protectors, caretakers, and family.

This is why millions of TikTok users can’t help but be awed by this Boxer’s courage and empathy. Shared by CBS News, the TikTok video has gained more than a million likes, along with thousands of comments.

A user called Audrey wrote in a heartfelt comment, “That’s not instinct. That’s not a coincidence. That’s consciousness. That is Love. Animals are not beneath us- they are beside us 🫂🐾✨️”

Meanwhile, Michelle shares her own experience: “Our dog does the same thing when our other dog has a seizure. If I’m asleep, he will wake me up to alert me that our dog is having a seizure. Animals are amazing.”

As pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka puts it, “What Reggie did wasn’t just instinct—it was love in its purest form. Dogs like him remind us of the incredible emotional depth our furry companions have.”

Seizure Alert Dogs

While Reggie saved his fursibling purely through instincts and emotional intelligence, many dogs specialize in handling seizures. Epilepsy Foundation in Australia states, “A seizure alert dog is one that has been trained to respond to a seizure in someone who has epilepsy.”

These dogs can be certified through approved training programs to become official assistance dogs, which means they are legally allowed to accompany their handler in public spaces.

People who’ve had positive experiences with seizure alert dogs often say these animals improve their quality of life, boost independence, offer therapy benefits, and provide great companionship.

How Does a Seizure Alert Dog Help?

Seizure alert dogs can be trained to carry out a range of supportive tasks during a seizure, such as:

  • Lying next to their handler to help prevent injury
  • Positioning themselves between the handler and the floor to help cushion a fall
  • Staying close during the seizure to offer comfort and reassurance
  • Activating an alert device to notify a caregiver or designated contact

However, it’s important to remember that not all dogs can be trained to perform every task reliably. The success of training depends on many factors, including the individual dog, the person’s specific needs, and the consistency of the seizure pattern.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is a seizure alert dog and what do they do?

A seizure alert dog is specially trained to assist individuals with epilepsy by responding to seizures. They can perform tasks like alerting others, providing physical comfort, preventing injury, and even fetching medication or activating emergency devices.

Can dogs really detect seizures before they happen?

Research has shown trained seizure-alert dogs (SADs) have been known to detect the onset of seizures or signal when one is imminent, giving individuals time to take preventative action.

Am I ready for the responsibility of having a seizure alert dog?

Owning a seizure alert dog means taking on the responsibility of both a pet and a working partner. These dogs require more than just love and care–they need ongoing training, structure, and attention to maintain their skills.

Are seizure alert dogs allowed in public places?

Yes, legally recognized service dogs including seizure alert dogs are allowed to accompany their handler in public places such as restaurants, stores, and public transport under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

This Boxer Was Marked a “Caution Dog” at the Shelter—But One Kind Stranger Changed Everything https://rockykanaka.com/this-boxer-was-marked-a-caution-dog-at-the-shelter-but-one-kind-stranger-changed-everything/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=112021 Kay, a 4-year-old Boxer, arrived at the Animal Friends of the Valleys shelter in Wildomar, California, with an “XOXO” marked on her kennel card — a cautionary note urging anyone who approached to go slow and be careful.  (Watch Video Below)

Dogs with this label often face an uphill battle for adoption, with many never making it out of the shelter alive. But fate had something different in store for Kay when she caught the attention of YouTuber and pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka, who decided to sit down with her and see beyond the label.

The Story Behind Kay’s Shelter Surrender

This Boxer Was Marked a “Caution Dog” at the Shelter—But One Kind Stranger Changed Everything
Source: TikTok

As Rocky sat with Kay, he could sense the tension in her body — the Boxer was clearly anxious and uncertain. He soon learned that Kay had been surrendered by her owner, along with three other Boxers. The reason? One of the dogs had bitten a new puppy in the home, but the owner couldn’t identify which one was responsible. Out of fear for their young child’s safety, they chose to surrender all four dogs to the shelter.

From Kay’s physical condition, Rocky could tell she hadn’t known much comfort. Her fur was matted with dirt, and her teeth — especially her canines — were chipped and worn down far more than what you’d expect from a typical 4-year-old dog. To him, it was clear: Kay and her companions had likely spent most of their lives confined to the backyard.

A Gentle Approach to Healing

Despite the “XOXO” caution sign on her kennel, Rocky chose to sit with Kay and give her the chance to show her true self. He started by keeping a respectful distance, softly calling her a “good girl” without making any physical contact. Through calm words and gentle reassurance, he let her know he understood her fear and was there to offer kindness, not harm.

As he spoke to her, Rocky told Kay he loved her and promised to help her find a better place. When he finally offered her a treat, Kay accepted it without hesitation — a small but powerful sign of trust. Encouraged by her response, Rocky slowly reached out to pet her, and Kay lowered her head, welcoming the affection she had long been starved of.

Rocky keeps on showering Kay with affection and affirmations to make her feel as loved as possible. He discovers dirt on her fur while scratching her, indicating the neglect she had gone through.

Happy Ending

Kay may have arrived at the shelter with a label and a heavy heart, but all she needed was a little patience and someone willing to see beyond her fear. Thanks to Rocky’s compassion and her own quiet bravery, Kay finally had the chance to show the world the sweet, loving dog she truly is.

And that second chance paid off — Kay was adopted into a caring forever home where she’ll never have to feel abandoned or overlooked again. Her journey is proof that with kindness, understanding, and hope, every dog can find the happiness they deserve.

This Boxer Was Marked a “Caution Dog” at the Shelter—But One Kind Stranger Changed Everything

As Rocky Kanaka put it best: “Every dog deserves someone who believes in them, even when the world has given up. Kay just needed a voice, and now she’s got a future.”

Her Kennel Labeled CAUTION, but Here’s the Truth… https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-87-kay/ Wed, 02 Apr 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=109305 The moment I stepped into her kennel, she was growling at me. Immediately, I could see the fear in her eyes—that unmistakable boxer expression that tells you everything you need to know. The kennel card had “CAUTION” written across it, and when I asked Alexis, one of the shelter staff, about my caution level on a scale of 1 to 10, she rated it a 6 or 7.

You might wonder why I’d walk into a situation like that. But this is why I do what I do. I never want to prejudge these animals based on kennel cards or notes alone. Apply a stereotype, and it quickly becomes who they are. Tell everyone to enter with caution, and suddenly the dog becomes labeled as dangerous—when really, they’re just hurt and scared.

I’m uniquely qualified to talk about boxers because my soul dog, Flip, was a boxer. When you look into a boxer’s eyes and see their facial expressions, they tell you their whole story. And this girl had quite a story to tell.

The Telltale Signs

Kay - Sitting with dogs 87

As I settled in, I noticed several things: her heavy, nervous breathing, her wide-open mouth (not a smile, but anxiety), and the scattered treats on the floor that she wasn’t touching—a sign of how shut down she was. Even my homemade, human-quality treats couldn’t break through her initial fear.

I started slow, offering treats, keeping my movements minimal. Boxers are known as the clown dogs of the canine world, but they’re also family protectors. They span the emotional gamut more than almost any breed—from lazy couch potatoes to high-energy goofballs to serious guardians. When they’re scared, they’ll certainly go into protection mode.

Gradually, she started accepting treats from my hand. Progress.

Her Story Unfolds

Kay - Sitting with dogs 87

While building trust with her, I learned her story from Alexis. This four-year-old boxer had come in just yesterday with three other boxers—all surrendered by the same owner. The reason? One of the dogs had apparently bitten a puppy in the home, but the owner didn’t know which one. So they surrendered all of them, including the puppy.

As the details emerged, I felt my protective instincts rising. None of the dogs were fixed. The owner mentioned having litters of puppies they were having trouble rehoming. She showed signs of having recently had puppies herself, with bloody lactation the staff was treating. Her broken canines suggested she’d been chewing on rocks out of boredom—a common behavior for backyard dogs.

It all painted a picture: these weren’t aggressive dogs. They were dogs who hadn’t been given a chance to succeed. They were likely backyard dogs, breeding machines, who hadn’t experienced proper integration into family life. “When you have children and multiple dogs, especially boxers, it can be challenging,” I acknowledged. “But you don’t give up on all of them.”

From Growls to Comfort

Kay - Sitting with dogs 87

As our session continued, her transformation was remarkable. She went from growling to eating treats to seeking affection. Her tense body gradually relaxed. I watched her boxer smile emerge—that real, genuine smile, not the anxious open-mouthed breathing from earlier.

When someone sent a squeaky toy through our “Love Letters with Dogs” program, she lit up. She started playing, even retrieving it when I tossed it. All signs of aggression disappeared.

At one point, she almost crawled into my lap—a move I call “the boxer curl.” We were so close to the full “scoop” (when a dog completely sits in my lap), getting about halfway there before kennel noise startled her. But the progress was undeniable.

The Power of a Bath

Kay - Sitting with dogs 87

The final transformation came with a bath. Mel, another staff member, was able to pick her up without any resistance. As the dirt and grime washed away, so did more of her fear. We dressed her in a yellow bandana sent by a supporter named Starla, and the difference was striking. Looking at before-and-after pictures, her eyes still showed concern but not sadness anymore.

A Personal Connection

Throughout our session, I couldn’t help but think of Flip. I lost him recently, and seeing another boxer in need opened that wound. But it also brought clarity to a dream I’d had where Flip told me, “This is not the end.”

His message was about letting go of fear—that constant guard I’ve kept around my heart, always waiting for good things to crash down. Flip taught me it’s okay to enjoy the good times, to invest fully in this mission of helping dogs without fearing loss.

This boxer girl was at that same crossroads—learning to trust again after her world fell apart.

Final Thoughts

Kay - Sitting with dogs 87

I’ll never stop missing Flip. But I know now—this isn’t the end. With every dog I sit with, his legacy continues. And with your help, we can make sure Kay’s next chapter is the best one yet.

If you can’t adopt, please share. If you want to help dogs like Kay, join our community, become a member, or just keep sitting with us.

Because every scared dog deserves their scoop.

The Heartbreaking Reason This Boxer Is in a Shelter Will Bring Tears to Your Eyes https://rockykanaka.com/sitting-with-dogs-48/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 15:22:48 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=73876 As a pet rescue advocate, I’ve had the privilege of encountering many incredible dogs with stories that tug at the heartstrings. Recently, I spent time in Los Angeles with a boxer named Sinatra, a dog whose journey reminds me of my late dog Flip. In this article, I’ll share my experience with Sinatra and the poignant memories of Flip that it evoked. Through these stories, I hope to shed light on the challenges and rewards of rescuing and rehabilitating shelter dogs.

Did his family bring him to the shelter because of vet costs?

Meeting Sinatra

I found Sinatra in the back of the shelter, tucked away in the medical section. When I first saw him, my heart ached; he looked so much like Flip.. Sinatra was covered in wounds, having recently undergone surgery to remove multiple tumors. The shelter staff didn’t anticipate his extensive medical needs when they brought him in for a simple neutering procedure. However, upon discovering the tumors, they had to make tough decisions due to time and budget constraints.

Sinatra’s Struggles

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

Boxers are prone to tumors, a fact that was all too evident with Sinatra. The shelter vet removed one tumor, then another, but had to stop due to limited resources. Unfortunately, this left Sinatra with an uncertain prognosis. The fear of the unknown is daunting for potential adopters, who might face hefty veterinary bills. Despite this, I couldn’t turn away from Sinatra. I knew he deserved a chance, and I was determined to help him find it.

The Emotional Connection

Being with Sinatra brought back memories of Flip. Flip was my rock, my constant companion, and an exceptional foster brother to many dogs. The bond we shared was profound, and seeing Sinatra stirred up those emotions. He looked at me with the same soulful eyes, and it was like seeing Flip all over again. The connection between dogs and humans is unique; they have a way of touching our hearts and bringing comfort in ways that people often can’t.

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

Sinatra’s Background

Sinatra’s story is a familiar one. He was dropped off at the shelter, possibly by his owners who couldn’t afford his medical care. It’s heartbreaking to think that a dog, after giving so much love and loyalty, could be abandoned in his time of need. But I understand the difficult choices some people face. Vet bills can be exorbitant, and not everyone has the means to cover them. This is where shelters and rescue organizations step in, providing a lifeline for these animals.

Flip’s Legacy

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

To truly appreciate Sinatra’s situation, I need to share Flip’s story. Flip was my gateway into the world of dog rescue. He was a boxer with a rough start, locked in a crate for the first four months of his life because a breeder couldn’t sell him. His paws atrophied, making it difficult for him to walk properly. Despite this, Flip had an indomitable spirit. He followed me around, tumbled and stumbled, but always got back up with a wagging tail and a joyful demeanor.

The Fight for Flip

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

When I adopted Flip, he was battling distemper, a deadly disease with a low survival rate for puppies. The vet bills piled up, and I spent thousands on his care, even though I had no money. The turning point came when the vet suggested we might need to let him go. I asked for one more day, and miraculously, Flip showed signs of improvement. He fought through and became a healthy, happy dog who spent over a decade with me, helping foster and rehabilitate other dogs.

Sharing Treats and Comfort

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

As I sat with Sinatra, I could see how much he craved comfort and affection. He was a bit drowsy from his medication, but his eyes lit up when I offered him a treat. “Sinatra, can I give you a treat?” I asked, and his tail wagged in response. It was a small moment of joy amidst his pain, and it reinforced my determination to help him. Boxers have this endearing way of wiggling their entire body when they’re happy, and Sinatra was no exception. Watching him enjoy the treat, even briefly, was a reminder of why these efforts are so important.

The Scoop on Sinatra

Getting to know Sinatra also meant understanding his story. “Do you want to go straight into the scoop?” I asked him, using a playful tone to lighten the mood. He looked at me with those expressive eyes, and I knew we had a connection. As I comforted him, I made sure to keep an eye on his wounds, ensuring he didn’t aggravate them. These interactions, though simple, were profound. They highlighted the importance of human connection and care in the healing process for these rescue dogs.

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

Fundraising for Sinatra

Inspired by Flip’s story, I decided to raise funds for Sinatra. The San Gabriel Valley Humane Society needs resources to give dogs like Sinatra a fighting chance. Our goal is to raise $10,000, enough to cover Sinatra’s medical expenses and help other dogs in need. I believe that with community support, we can make a difference.

Flip’s Farm and Flip Coffee

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

After Flip passed, I wanted to honor his memory by creating something lasting. This led to Flip’s Farm, where we rehabilitate dogs and grow coffee. The proceeds from Flip Coffee support the farm and our rescue efforts. It’s a sustainable model that ensures Flip’s legacy lives on, helping dogs long after I’m gone.

Call to Action

Sinatra’s future is uncertain, but with your help, we can give him a chance. Donations will go directly to his medical care and support the shelter. Additionally, purchasing Flip Coffee will contribute to our ongoing rescue efforts. Together, we can continue to save dogs like Sinatra and honor the legacy of incredible dogs like Flip.

Sitting With Dogs #48: Sinatra

The journey of rescue is filled with challenges and triumphs. Dogs like Sinatra and Flip show us the resilience and unwavering spirit that animals possess. As a community, we have the power to change their lives, offering them the love and care they deserve. Thank you for being a part of this journey, and for supporting our mission to save these wonderful animals.

How did boxer dogs get their name?

Boxer dogs got their name from their distinctive behavior of standing on their hind legs and “boxing” with their front paws during play and combat. This characteristic was particularly noticeable in the breed’s early history when they were used for bull-baiting and other forms of hunting and fighting. The breed originated in Germany in the late 19th century, and their name is derived from this unique fighting style.

The name “Boxer” was likely popularized due to the breed’s resemblance to human boxers in the ring, making the name an apt description of their playful and energetic nature. Additionally, the German word for “boxer” is “Boxer,” further solidifying the breed’s name in both English and German languages. Over time, Boxers became known not just for their fighting prowess but also for their loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature, making them popular family pets and working dogs.

Flip’s Golden Years: Why My Dog is Retiring at 10 Years Old https://rockykanaka.com/why-i-am-retiring-my-dog/ Fri, 24 Mar 2023 23:23:35 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=24004 My Boxer, Flip, is ready to retire after a well-lived 10 years. Although, I believe some of his best days are yet to come. It’s hard to believe that a decade has gone by since he came into my life. Now, he can enjoy the good life of sleeping all day, going for occasional walks and playing fetch, receiving endless belly rubs, and of course, still eating his homemade dog food, which has contributed to his long-term health.

Kelly and I first met Flip when we were doing a donation drop at a rescue and his floppy ears and paws were following us around everywhere.

I say floppy paws because he had been in a cage that was too small for him and his paws atrophied, so he was unable to control them properly.

Flip at the shelter
Flip at the shelter

He had to “flip” them up to walk. While that seemed cute at the moment, it was actually a sign of the neglect he had already faced at such a young age.

Recovering at home from distemper
Recovering at home from distemper

Flip’s neglectful past led to distemper

For a few weeks I kept thinking about Flip and knew he was the dog for me. So we decided to adopt him! But the night we brought him home, things took a turn for the worse and I knew something was terribly wrong.

We ended up in the ER doing tests, getting him fluids and things were deteriorating quickly, I thought we were going to lose him. He was diagnosed with distemper, a condition that many dogs don’t survive. Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems.

The vet had “the talk” with us about our options and humanely euthanizing him would be the best option. I remember knowing she was right. I paused for what seemed like 5 minutes. How could I disagree with what she was saying? He was down and out. But I couldn’t give up on this little guy.

I just promised him I would be his best friend forever. So I compromised with her and myself. I told her okay but let’s give it one more night.

The bond between Flip and us strengthened through illness and recovery

When Kelly and I returned the next morning we brought him his favorite toy. We were prepared for the worst. But when we walked in, the vet had a smile on her face!

She said he was lifting his head and that was a good sign he had turned the corner. She asked if we wanted to see if he would eat some wet food.

Of course we did! I still remember him looking at me with his big eyes and expressive eyebrows. Boxers have the most expressive eyebrows of any breed, and at that moment, I knew we were going to be best friends for life. After about a week (and $$$) he was well enough to come home! The vet let us know he still had a long road to recovery but I knew he was going to be ok.

 Flip, Happy boy
Flip, Happy boy

Boxers are known for their silly, playful, and affectionate nature, which perfectly describes Flip. But this personality was overshadowed by his illness for the first 6 months we had him. Slowly but surely, his playful and goofy side came out as he got better and better. And our friendship grew.

Flip has been through a lot with me

We’ve been through a lot with Flip.

>He’s had multiple tumors removed, luckily all were caught early on.

>We were on the cover of a magazine!

>He’s lived on a boat in the marina, in a small beach house, and is now living out his retired life on our California coffee farm.

>He was there when Kelly & I got married and along for the birth of our two kids.

>He’s been the father figure to all the foster dogs we’ve had in and out of our house.

>A toy was even created based on his goofy face

We made this dog toy based on Flip. You can purchase one on our website.

Retirement for Flip means enjoying life on a California coffee farm

Flip’s crisp black, brown and white lines have now faded to a gray blend, though I didn’t realize it until I looked back at some younger pictures of him.

When I say I am retiring Flip, I basically mean he’s no longer on duty to help me with fostering dogs. People often thank me for rehabilitating dogs but honestly Flip should get just as much if not more of the gratitude.

Watch this video ⬇️ where Flip reacts to a water fountain. It will make you laugh!

Because we take on the dogs with special needs like blind dogs, feral dogs, injured dogs, etc, I always relied on him. And he always seemed to know just what to do. He showed feral dogs that came from hoarding situations how to be dogs.

He gave gentle but assertive corrections to dogs that needed help with boundaries. And he put up with so much crap from puppy after puppy.

Like Jalapeno in his special Bailey chair, Willie with his WILD over the top blind dog bravery and Kobe…oh all of the things Flip has put up with when it comes to Kobe! Kobe has run into Flip too many times to count.

You may see Flip less and less in videos, my instagram posts etc, though he will be the first to tell you that he’s not passing on any sort of taste test!

He and Zoey, who is now 15 years old, have earned their much deserved retirement and I’m honored to care and be here for him throughout his senior years and beyond.

The best dog & best friend I’ve ever had

Flip is the best dog I have ever had. I call him my best friend and he will always hold that place in my heart.

Now we will focus on spending special moments and days together and as each day passes, time becomes more special with my best friend.

Boxer Nutritional Needs

Boxers have the same general nutrition needs as all other dogs and should eat a diet high in animal protein with some fruits and vegetables for added nutrients.

Boxers are considered a medium-large breed and reach 50-55 lbs in weight. Boxers are also known for having quite the appetite, and will sometimes eat beyond their need simply for the pleasure of it. Because of this, it’s important to know exactly how much food your Boxer needs.

Boxer Health

As mentioned, Boxers are prone to a variety of health conditions including:

  • Unwanted weight gain
  • Hip & elbow dysplasia
  • Cardiomyopathy (heart disease)
  • Cancer
  • Skin irritation & allergies
  • Eye problems (such as cataracts and corneal dystrophy)

A healthy, well-balanced diet high in essential nutrients can help prevent and ease the symptoms of these conditions. In particular, Boxers benefit from Omega-3 fatty acids, which help to support healthy joints, ligaments, skin, and coat. Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for dogs with allergies and easily irritated skin.

Best Dog Food for Boxers

1. Best Raw: We Feed Raw Venison Formula

All-Time Best Dog Food Brands for Boxers

We Feed Raw is one of our favorite raw dog food brands thanks to their limited, high-quality ingredients. Each recipe is made primarily from animal proteins and includes an essential mix of vitamins and minerals.

Since Boxers are sometimes prone to allergies, we recommend choosing a novel protein like venison, which is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. This formula also includes added Omega-3s to help enrich your Boxer’s skin and coat while supporting healthy joints.

Best Food for Boxers FAQ

What is the best food for Boxer puppies?

The best Boxer puppy foods have whole ingredients and are high in protein to promote growth. Any of the options on this list would be a good choice for a Boxer puppy, but we also recommend Merrick’s canned grain-free wet food for puppies

Do Boxers need special food?

Unless your Boxer has a specific health concern they should not need to eat a special diet. Veterinarians can prescribe specific diets for dogs with health issues, but the majority of Boxers will do well on a standard diet.

This said it’s a good idea to make sure your Boxer’s food is high in Omega-3s to support healthy joints, bones, and skin.

What foods are Boxers allergic to?

The most common food allergens for Boxers are chicken and beef. Signs of food allergies can include itching, paw licking, inflamed or red skin, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect that your Boxer could have a food allergy, we suggest switching them to a novel protein diet. Novel proteins include venison, bison, and fish.

So, what is the best dog food for Boxers with allergies? We recommend trying Spot & Tango’s Salmon UnKibble or We Feed Raw’s venison formula.

Do Boxers need grain free food?

Deciding whether or not to feed your dog grain is a personal decision to be made with your veterinarian. In some cases, dogs with allergies do better on a grain-free diet.

What is the worst dog food for Boxers?

Commercial brands like Purina and IAMS are not recommended for Boxers or any dog due to their low-quality ingredients and poor formulation.

What is the best dry food for Boxer puppy?

We recommend Front of the Pack’s air-dried food or Spot and Tango’s Unkibble

Is there a Boxer food forum?

Yes! There are several. Here are popular options:
>BoxerForums.com
>BoxerWorld.com
>TheBoxerForum.com
>Boxer Lovers (Facebook group)
>Boxer Dog Owners (Facebook group)
>The Boxer Fan Club (Facebook group)

Is there a Royal Canin Boxer food?

Yes, Royal Canin makes Boxer-specific dog food. Because none of the first five ingredients are animal protein, we do not recommend this brand.

What is the best wet food for Boxers?

We recommend Ziwi Peak for Boxers.

What is the best Purina dog food for boxers?

We do not recommend brands like Purina or IAMS for Boxers or any other breed. These grocery store brands rarely use whole ingredients, and stuff their formulas with fillers.

What is the best dog food for senior Boxers?

While any of the foods on this list will work for a senior, we recommend choosing a soft food like We Feed RawPrimalThe Farmer’s Dog, or Merricks wet canned food.

What is the best dog food for Boxers with skin allergies?

Boxers with skin allergies do well on a diet high in Omega-3s like Spot & Tango’s Cod & Salmon UnKibble recipe.

What is the best weight-loss food for Beagles?

If your dog needs a prescribed weight-loss diet, you will need to receive a recommendation from your veterinarian. To help your dog lose weight without a prescription diet, veterinarians recommend lean proteins like fish and poultry, and may recommend smaller portion sizes.
Always speak to your vet before changing your dog’s portions.

What is the best food for boxers with sensitive stomachs

We recommend the beef recipe from The Farmer’s Dog.

Also, you can find our recommendation about best dog food options for French Bulldogs here!
