When Opie wants attention, he rubs up against his humans’ legs, going back and forth like a cat, tail raised in the air. Cat’s are definitely onto something with this move—it always gets the message across!

Despite being a mid-sized to large dog, Opie doesn’t sit on the couch seats—he sits on the cushions on the back and makes dents in them! He might not be the size of a cat, but he sure sits like one. He also takes naps with his face tucked into his paws and even loafs like a cat, hiding all four paws under his body. Sometimes Opie will even loaf on top of objects like cat trees!

Opie still lives with cats, and while he sometimes judges them for being too crazy, he feels right at home with his feline siblings. 

Despite being raised with cats and being a little different from other dogs, Opie has plenty of canine buddies. The Komondor originated in Hungary, where it was bred centuries ago to guard livestock, particularly sheep. Its iconic white cords weren’t just for looks—they provided serious protection. The coat also allowed the Komondor to blend seamlessly into flocks of sheep, making it harder for predators to distinguish dog from livestock.

Several dog breeds are known for long or shaggy coats, including the Old English Sheepdog, Bearded Collie, and Briard. While these dogs may appear similar at a glance, their coats behave very differently. Their hair remains loose and must be brushed regularly to prevent random matting. If neglected, it tangles unevenly rather than forming intentional structure.

The Komondor stands apart because its coat naturally separates into dense, uniform cords as the dog matures—without brushing, styling, or human shaping. This corded formation is genetically driven and functionally evolved, making it one of the rarest and most distinctive coat types in the canine world.

Despite its dramatic appearance, the Komondor is known for being calm, loyal, and deeply devoted to its family. Traditionally an independent guardian, the breed is protective without being aggressive and thrives when given a job or purpose. These dogs were bred to think independently, make decisions without constant human guidance, and remain steady under pressure—traits that still define the breed today.

Komondors are typically reserved with strangers but form strong bonds with the people they trust. Because of their size, strength, and protective instincts, they benefit from early socialization, consistent training, and experienced ownership. While their coat doesn’t need brushing in the traditional sense, it does require regular care to keep the cords clean and healthy.

Rare outside of Hungary, the Komondor remains a purpose-driven working breed rather than a decorative one—valued for its courage, intelligence, and unmistakable presence.

Witnesses had seen someone enter the Potter’s garden and then exit with Daisy who was promptly stuffed into a truck and driven away. Police guessed the suspects were backyard breeders looking for purebred dogs to breed for profit. Despite the witnesses, no leads were discovered and the vehicle that took Daisy could never be traced. 

Rita and Philip were devastated and spoke publicly with the press and on social media about the ordeal. The trauma of losing their dog to abduction even motivated the Potters to petition the government to pay more attention to pet theft, collecting 100,000 signatures and helping to push for the passing of the 2024 Pet Abduction Act which recognizes animals as sentient beings rather than just property. Under the new bill, people found guilty of abducting animals could serve up to five years in prison and pay hefty fines. 

Though it appeared there was no hope for Rita and Philip to be reunited with Daisy, the couple never forgot her, keeping a picture of her on the mantle and thinking of her often. Years passed with no news until suddenly, a miracle happened. 

A Chance Discovery: Learning Daisy’s Fate

Kim Walters, an inspector from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), had been called to a home in Somerset for a routine assessment in early February 2025. Upon arrival, Walters discovered a senior Labrador Retriever in poor condition, so poor that she feared the animal needed immediate veterinary care. The owner of the dog said they had only had the dog for a few years, but agreed to sign her over to the RSPCA. 

Walters quickly brought the dog to the charity’s veterinarians who found clear evidence of backyard breeding including hip dysplasia, masses on her mammary glands, and other signs of neglect. 

“She really is the sweetest girl and will wag her tail whenever she sees you, but since she was stolen it is clear she has had a hard life,” said behavioral welfare advisor for the RSPCA, Andy Cook in an interview with the BBC. 

Cases of backyard breeding are unfortunately not uncommon, but during the examination of this particular dog, vets found something they never expected. 

When the dog’s microchip was scanned, the Potters’ information popped up: this dog was Daisy who had now been missing for seven years!

Reunited with Daisy After Years of Separation

When the Potters got the call, they were overjoyed to hear that Daisy had been found. Though she had spent half her lifetime 200 miles away from her family, the Potters were thrilled at the chance to care for her in her golden years. 

“We know she is elderly now and has health issues, but whatever time she has left she will now be surrounded by lots of love and attention,” said Mrs. Potter to the BBC. 

On the day of Daisy’s return home, the Potters, their children, and their grandchildren were waiting to greet her. Surrounded by humans who loved her, Daisy took the reunion in stride, tail wagging furiously as she accepted her much-deserved pets. Because the Potters never gave up and thanks to the diligence of the RSPCA, Daisy is right back where she belongs, and the Potters have helped other pet owners work towards getting justice for their stolen pets. 

A Troubling Pattern

Bobby’s situation is all too common for his breed, yet deeply concerning. At just one year old, he’s already been through the shelter system three times, all within the past month. Each time, he was found wandering, picked up by strangers, and returned to the same concrete kennel. Despite being microchipped after his first visit, his owner never came back.

For those unfamiliar with basset hounds, this pattern isn’t entirely surprising. These dogs possess the second-best sense of smell in the canine world, with approximately 220 million scent receptors compared to humans’ mere 6 million. They were bred for scenting work, and without proper training and exercise, that incredible nose can lead them miles from home before they even realize they’re lost.

The Medical Concern

But Bobby’s challenges extend beyond his wandering tendencies and excessive barking. During our time together, I noticed he was favoring one of his front paws, sometimes walking on it, sometimes not. The shelter staff confirmed they’d observed the same limp when he first arrived.

This medical issue likely contributes to his behavioral problems. A dog in pain or discomfort can’t be expected to behave perfectly, yet without proper veterinary care and diagnosis, potential adopters only see the barking and the limping. These are red flags that keep them walking past his kennel.

The Adoption Challenge

Basset hounds make incredible family dogs, but they’re not for everyone. They require dedicated owners willing to provide proper exercise, scent training, and consistent behavioral guidance. Too often, people adopt them because they’re adorable: those long ears, droopy eyes, and bodies that seem stretched like cartoon characters. But when the reality of owning a scent hound sets in, these dogs end up back in shelters, sometimes repeatedly.

Each return chips away at their ability to trust, making it harder for them to bond with a permanent family. Bobby’s three shelter visits in 30 days exemplify this heartbreaking cycle.

A Shelter Worth Praising

I want to address something important about Chula Vista Animal Services. When I posted about Bobby, some commenters criticized the shelter’s concrete kennels and conditions. But having visited shelters across the country, I can tell you this facility is doing exceptional work under challenging circumstances.

They’re operating at 150% capacity, with all foster homes full. Yet they’ve kept dogs for over 400 days, fighting for each one when other shelters might have given up. Those concrete floors aren’t cruelty; they’re necessity. Municipal shelters need surfaces they can properly disinfect with the constant turnover of animals.

The appearance of a shelter often reflects the resources available in its community. Wealthy areas have pristine facilities; communities with fewer resources do the best they can. Chula Vista falls into the latter category, but their dedication to these animals is undeniable.

The Decision

Standing in that kennel with Bobby, I faced a familiar internal conflict. My brain listed all the logical reasons not to take him: we’re at capacity at the farm with Pumpkin, Lily, and the two boxer rescues Harley and Diesel. We’d need to quarantine him. The veterinary care for his paw could be expensive. The behavioral training would take time and patience.

But my heart had a different answer.

I called Angelica, who helps manage the farm, to discuss logistics. Could we move the boxers to make room? Set up temporary space in the house like we did before? The challenges were real, but so was Bobby’s need.

After walking out of that kennel to think, I realized I’d been in this position before: called to help someone in need when everything in my brain said it would be easier to walk away. And every time, my heart has led me to the right decision.

Bobby is coming to the farm.

The Road Ahead

We don’t have everything figured out yet. We’ll need to determine what’s wrong with his paw. Is it broken? Sprained? Nerve damage? Progress with the Boxers

In better news, Harley and Diesel (our two boxer rescues) just received a clean bill of health from the vet. No distemper, no kennel cough. We were so worried they had kennel cough, but they’re completely clear.

Diesel isn’t deaf, as we’d suspected given her white coat and multi-colored eyes. She just jumps at every sound, a sign of her fearful past. Both dogs are slowly adjusting to farm life. They’re running, playing fetch, and Diesel even took a treat from me, which is a major milestone. Harley’s been giving kisses, and while they’re still jumpy and healing will take time, they’re making real progress.

The Importance of Proper Nutrition

Getting these dogs healthy starts with what we feed them and how we support their recovery. I’ve put Harley and Diesel on high-quality food and my custom supplement regimen, which I haven’t talked much about because I’ve been obsessing over getting the formulations just right.

She was facing the heartbreaking reality of spending her final days alone in a cold shelter kennel until one rescue refused to let that happen. When True & Faithful Pet Rescue Mission (TFPRM) heard about Miss Nibbles, they didn’t hesitate. A Life-Changing Decision

Worried about Nash’s growing lump, his family rushed him to the vet for answers. What they never expected was that this vet visit would come with a devastating diagnosis. After examining Nash and running tests, the vets discovered he had Grade 3 Soft Tissue Sarcoma (STS) on his limping leg. 

Since the cancer was already in its most aggressive grade, the only option was to amputate Nash’s leg to prevent the cancer from spreading to other parts of his body. Surgery was necessary to save his life. 

Recovery Struggles

Thankfully, Nash’s surgery was a success. But his recovery and adjustment period were anything but easy. 

During the early days after surgery, Nash struggled to adjust to life without four legs. Everything about his body felt unfamiliar, as he experienced trouble walking, standing, and maintaining balance. His new reality also affected his confidence. Nash couldn’t understand why moving around freely wasn’t normal anymore. But through it all, his family gave him the physical and emotional support he needed to adjust to a tripod lifestyle.

As days went by, Nash began to gain confidence to take the next step, even when it felt hard.

Nash’s Inspiring Transformation

It’s been over a month since Nash got his leg amputated. Amazingly, he’s no longer the unsure, heartbroken pup that he was during the initial days after surgery. Nash has already adapted to life with three legs. He now runs, walks, and plays without hesitation. Above all, his confidence and joyful personality are shining through like never before. 

Nash embraces each day with the same gratitude and enthusiasm he had before his life took a hit. While he may have lost a leg, he never lost the core of who he is: a playful pup who’s full of life.

Nash’s story is proof of how incredibly resilient dogs are in the face of challenges. Most importantly, his journey serves as a timely reminder on the importance of seeking veterinary help when your dog shows any unusual signs, whether minor or major. 

Grade 3 Soft Tissue Sarcoma in Dogs FAQs

Chilli’s start to life was anything but rosy. This adorable pup was born at a UK-based Rescue, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, alongside his seven littermates. Though Chilli, like many rescue pups, entered this world without a certain future, there was something uniquely outstanding about him. Staff at the rescue noticed that he was exceptionally curious about scents compared to his littermates. He’d spend most of his time sniffing out anything and everything he came across with so much focus, as though the world around him needed proper investigations. Beyond being a super sniffer, Chilli was also a fast learner and a strong-willed pup who exhibited unmatched confidence. The rescue sensed that these qualities made Chilli the perfect candidate for a higher calling, so they reached out to Medical Detection Dogs (MDD), a UK-based charity that specializes in training dogs for bio detection work.

The Beginning of Greatness 

MDD didn’t hesitate to enrol Chilli in their program. Specifically, they wanted Chilli to be among the few dogs worldwide that could accurately sniff out Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa), a multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogen responsible for deadly lung infection in humans. 

When MDD took in Chilli, he underwent thorough scent-recognition assessments to further evaluate his capabilities as a Bio Detection Dog. During this assessment period, Chilli resided in a family home with volunteer puppy socializers as guided by MDD. This move helped further hone his curiosity, confidence, discipline, and ability to adapt to new environments. as he interacted with the outside world. 

Each time, Chilli impressed everyone with the way he approached the assessments with enthusiasm and focus. He’d bring his A-game during these tests, proving just how ready and capable he was for the big role. 

Chilli’s journey took a much brighter turn after he passed all his assessment tests, including the recent final one. Today, this smart pup is officially undergoing training to learn how to detect the odor of this lethal pathogenic bacterium with precision and accuracy.

Chilli is now among the handful of pups globally that make up MDD’s Bio Detection Dog team. With his input, scientists & medical researchers will be able to transform the diagnosis of this dangerous type of lung infection. His role will help save countless lives through early diagnosis, and patients will benefit from less-invasive diagnostic procedures. 

A Small Puppy With a Big Purpose

Chilli’s story is evidence of how one’s life can change when someone sees potential in you. The rescue recognized he was gifted from the very beginning, and instead of overlooking his abilities, gave him a chance to excel at a young age.

Chilli may have come from a humble background, but his current success proves he was indeed destined for life-saving work. The most beautiful part about this is that while Chilli has stepped into a serious role, he’s not missing out on the joys of being a puppy. Chilli is adored by his trainers, who spoil him with everything a puppy yearns for: love, play, and lots of treats. 

Just days before this check-up, Graffiti looked perfectly healthy and normal. He was still his usual playful self, enjoying life to the fullest. Nothing about Graffiti suggested sickness, not even his appetite, energy, or behavior. 

So when his family took him to the vet for his annual wellness check-up, it wasn’t because they had observed anything concerning. They were simply fulfilling their duty as responsible dog owners, just to make sure Graffiti’s health was on track. Just a few weeks ago, Graffiti was running around, full of joy and completely himself. He likely still would be exerting himself like nothing was wrong if we hadn’t taken him in for his routine annual exam and X-rays. That visit is when we discovered a large tumor on his spleen. As you all know, he was diagnosed with splenic hemangiosarcoma, and by the time we found it, it had already metastasized to his lungs, making surgery no longer an option. This disease is especially devastating because it often shows no outward symptoms and grows silently. Without that routine appointment, we wouldn’t have known, and everyday activity (running, jumping etc) would have been extremely dangerous for him. Now that we do know, we’re able to shift our care and focus on what matters most: giving him the best possible quality of life through supportive care, medications, supplements, and being fully present for every day we have left with him. We’re sharing this as a reminder that routine wellness exams truly matter. Knowledge is powerful – it can help protect your dog’s health and, in some cases, give you more time together. From “Healthy” to Dying

During the wellness exam, vets noticed something was visibly off about Graffiti’s abdomen. Further tests were carried out, and the results came back with shocking details: Graffiti had a large tumor in his spleen, medically diagnosed as splenic hemangiosarcoma. What made this news harder for his family to digest was the realization that the tumor had been growing quietly inside him without any physical signs of illness manifesting. 

Then came more devastating news.

The vets discovered that the splenic tumor was in its advanced stage and had already metastasized to his lungs. Graffiti’s family was informed that the tumor couldn’t be removed through surgery because of its size and how far it had spread. With painful hearts, the vets confirmed that Graffiti only had 4-6 weeks left to live.

Choosing Positivity Over Fear

To Graffiti’s family, news of his limited time brought instant sadness and disbelief. But as devastating as this revelation was, they made the brave decision to focus on giving Graffiti the best possible quality of life for his remaining time. 

Since the diagnosis, Graffiti’s family has been working closely with his veterinary team to manage his care and comfort at home. His daily routine now involves pain medication to reduce discomfort and lots of supportive care from his family.

Graffiti’s owners are choosing to make the most out of his limited time instead of focusing on his dreaded fate. They’re spending more time with him during this period, knowing every moment with him is a precious gift. 

What’s most comforting about Graffiti’s situation is that despite the heartbreaking diagnosis, he doesn’t look like a dog nearing the end of life. While he may be sleeping more than usual and moving around slower than before, Graffiti’s joyful personality continues to shine through. He’s still showing interest in food, play, and short walks. Above all, Graffiti is surrounded by love like never before. Though he may be running out of time, there’s not a single moment when he’ll feel anything less than cherished.
