Mama Dog & Her Puppy Were Surrendered for Reasons That Are Hard to Understand and Now They’re Waiting

Some dog surrenders hit you in the gut and get your blood boiling at the same time. While some families make the heartbreaking decision for real, unavoidable reasons, others offer explanations so thin you’re left wondering why they brought a dog home in the first place

So many dogs are returned to shelters, not because they’re “dangerous” or “impossible” to manage, but simply because their owners wanted the easy way out. Instead of remaining patient and consistent with guidance & training, many owners give up on their dogs at the slightest inconvenience. Others simply rush into dog ownership without proper research, forgetting that dogs deserve commitment, intention, and effort.

@mercyfullproject And now we begin the healing. ❤️‍🩹 From our side of the door, owner surrenders don’t look like paperwork. They look like dogs pacing in circles because they’re waiting for the person who just walked away.💔 They look like someone sitting quietly in a kennel, staring at the door, certain this is just a misunderstanding. We hear the reasons. Some are unavoidable. Some are complicated. Some are written in a single sentence that changes an animal’s entire life. What the forms don’t show is the moment after— when the car is gone, the voices they know are gone, and all that’s left is us trying to explain safety to a heart that just lost everything it knew. We don’t judge. But we do grieve. Because every owner surrender is the end of a promise for the animal who never stopped keeping theirs. And from that moment on, we become the bridge— the ones who sit with them, advocate for them, heal them, and promise that this ending will not be the last chapter. If you can foster, adopt, donate, or even just share— you are helping us turn surrender into a second chance. 💚 #ownersurrender #surrender #sad #healing #animalrescue ♬ original sound – Mercy Full Project

What’s more painful is the heartbreak and confusion that these dogs experience when they realize they’ve been left behind by the family they trusted wholeheartedly. This is the situation that eight sweet dogs, including a mama dog and her puppy, recently found themselves in after they were surrendered to Mercy Full Project in Tampa, FL. Truth be told, you’ll be shattered by the reasons given for their surrender.

While some of these pups have since found homes, a few are still desperately waiting for their happy ending:

1. Ruby and Dave

Ruby is a Husky Mix mama dog who was surrendered together with her 4-month-old puppy, Dave, for digging holes in the yard. Ruby’s situation is a sad one because she’s an active 2-year-old dog who simply resorted to digging holes as a way of relieving pent-up energy.

All Ruby & Dave needed was proper guidance and training, as well as enough physical & mental stimulation. Instead, their family concluded they were a nuisance and surrendered them without second thoughts. Ruby and Dave are now waiting for their perfect match, and they aren’t asking anything grand. The only thing they desire is a family that’s ready to accommodate their high energy. If you can, please adopt Ruby and Dave.

2. Lila

1-year-old Lila found herself at the shelter because her owner could no longer give her the care she deserved. This gorgeous Pitbull/Staffy mix has alot of good qualities going on. Besides being a huge lover of people, kids, cozy naps, and other dogs, Lila is potty trained, crate trained, and understands basic commands (but she’ll be the happiest if you can continue training her). 3. Loki and Thor

These two adorable pups were returned to the shelter because their owner couldn’t afford to care for them anymore. Thankfully, Lila and Thor have been adopted. We’re glad that this surrender led them both to the homes of their dreams.

 4. Jett

This adorable Mini Doodle was labelled “too much to handle” because he wasn’t getting along with the family’s 5-year-old daughter. For families with kids looking to adopt a small dog, Jett’s reason for surrender is a timely reminder of why you need to familiarize yourself with kid-friendly small dog breeds before bringing one home. Luckily, Jett now has a new family.

5. Baby King

Baby King’s family didn’t have time for him anymore, so they surrendered him. It’s for this reason that we’ll never get tired of emphasizing you shouldn’t get a pet if you’re not ready for this serious responsibility. Before bringing home a dog, confirm whether you’re adoption-ready using an essential adoption checklist like this one. Fortunately for Baby King, he’s found a loving home that has all the time in the world for him.

6. Koby

Koby’s reason for surrender is one we hear too often: his family was moving out of the country, and unfortunately, couldn’t take him along. The good news is, Koby has since found a home.
