But only one character (and one dog) holds the record as the parade’s most beloved and most featured balloon of all time: Snoopy, the world-famous beagle from Charles Schulz’s Peanuts.

Over the course of nearly 60 years, Snoopy has appeared in more shapes, styles, and redesigns than any other character in parade history. His first flight took off in 1968, and since then, the mischievous, imaginative pup has returned again and again — sometimes as a pilot, sometimes as an astronaut, sometimes sporting aviator goggles as the iconic World War I Flying Ace.

A Parade Legacy That Grew With the Holiday

Source: @ahistoryofdogs

Snoopy’s rise as a Thanksgiving mascot mirrors America’s love for Peanuts. By the late 1960s, the comic strip was read by over 300 million people worldwide, and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving became a seasonal staple. Featuring Snoopy carving the turkey, serving toast, and setting an outdoor table for his friends, the special helped cement him as part of the holiday tradition.

As a result, the beagle soared above New York City again and again — with each new balloon reflecting pop culture moments and Schulz’s evolving artwork. Across decades, Snoopy has held many “firsts” in parade history:

  • Most balloon versions of any character (8 unique designs)
  • Most total appearances by a single balloon character
  • First beagle-themed balloon to headline the parade
  • One of the few characters to span multiple parade eras

His appearances stretch from world peace themes of the 1970s to space exploration tributes of the 2010s — including a NASA-inspired Astronaut Snoopy balloon celebrating 50 years of the Apollo program.

Why Snoopy Endures

Source: New York Times

There’s a reason Snoopy stands above every other fictional dog in parade history.

He’s more than a cartoon — he’s an emotion.
Playful. Hopeful. Imaginative. Optimistic.
A dreamer who thinks anything is possible.

For families watching the parade, Snoopy represents joy and nostalgia. For kids, he’s a fun, friendly character floating high above the streets. For adults, he’s a reminder of childhood mornings spent reading newspapers or watching holiday specials.

Year after year, his balloons draw cheers — because people aren’t just seeing a giant beagle in the sky. They’re seeing a shared memory.

A Record That Still Stands

Source: CNN

As of 2025, no other dog — or character of any species — has surpassed Snoopy’s record number of parade appearances.
He remains the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’s most iconic balloon, and with new Peanuts shows, museum exhibits, and cultural revivals, his legacy continues to grow.

What Do Dogs Dream About? Groundbreaking Research Has the Sweetest Answer https://rockykanaka.com/what-do-dogs-dream-about/ Mon, 06 Oct 2025 16:00:12 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=29714 There’s something undeniably heartwarming about watching our dogs twitch their paws or let out soft little barks while they sleep. It makes us wonder—what’s going on in their dreams? Are they chasing tennis balls through sunny fields, or snuggling up beside us on the couch?

Offering fascinating insights into this age-old question is Dr. Deirdre Barrett, a distinguished clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School. Her groundbreaking research delves into the enigmatic world of canine slumber, unveiling what dogs are likely dreaming about.

What do Dogs dream about

According to Dr. Barrett, dogs, much like humans, probably dream about their everyday experiences, which suggests a strong likelihood that they dream about their cherished owners.

In an interview with People magazine, she shared:

“Since dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, it’s likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell, and of pleasing or annoying you.”

Dr. Barrett

While it remains impossible to ascertain the exact contents of a dog’s dream, Dr. Barrett suggests that when their paws or legs twitch, they may be immersed in a dream of running. Similarly, when dogs bark during sleep, they could be interacting with another dog or human in their dream world. These behaviors mirror the human experience of dreaming during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep stage, which is when dreams predominantly occur.

What do dogs dream about

As with humans, dogs undergo cycles of light, deep, and REM sleep, with the latter being the phase most conducive to dreaming. During REM sleep, which typically commences around 90 minutes into a nap, dreams transpire for humans, and it is plausible to surmise that other animals share this phenomenon.

Dr. Barrett advises pet owners to enhance their dogs’ dreams by exposing them to positive daytime experiences and providing them with a secure and comfortable sleep environment.

However, when it comes to canine nightmares, the American Kennel Club cautions owners to refrain from rousing their pets, as dogs may react aggressively when abruptly awakened. Echoing this sentiment, the organization advises:

“Not all human dreams are good. We infer that dogs can have nightmares, too. These nightmares are hard to watch. It can be tempting to wake your dog to comfort her, as you would a child, but there are some risks associated with doggy nightmares that you should share with your family. If you’ve ever been woken from a scary dream, you know that it can take a minute to remember where you are and whom you are with.”

Dr. Deirdre Barrett’s illuminating study offers a glimpse into the sleeping minds of our beloved dogs, reinforcing the profound bond shared between canines and their human companions. With these new insights, we can better appreciate the rich inner lives of our furry friends and treasure the joy they derive from their dreams, which are, perhaps, intertwined with the image of our smiling faces and the scent of our unwavering love.

Can Dogs Smell Cancer? These True Stories Will Shock You https://rockykanaka.com/can-dogs-smell-cancer/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=8308 Dogs are famous for their incredible noses—but can they really detect cancer? Both countless real-life stories from dog owners and cutting-edge scientific research point to the same conclusion: the answer is a resounding “yes.”

If you have any doubts, then the story of Josie Conlan, British mother of two, will leave you a believer. It was Josie who was more often managing the health of her rescue Border Collie, Ted, than Ted managing hers.

“When we got him, he looked so sad. The vets told us he had been kept in a confined cage for a long time. He was terrified of everything. It took him about 10 months to really settle.” explained Conlan.

A Dog’s Nose That Saved a Life

So when the table’s turned in 2014, it was just in the nick of time. Having cared for her mother and father-in-law through cancer, and managing her own chronic fatigue syndrome and benign breast disease, Conlan was confident with her ability to spot possible looming health issues. But when Ted began sniffing and pawing at her breast, Conlan’s instincts told her this was more than play.

“I had heard that dogs could smell cancer so I said to my husband, ‘Brian, should I go and get this checked out?’ Ted started sniffing it and at that point I knew I needed to do something about it.”

A doctor’s appointment confirmed a cancerous lump in Josie Conlan’s breast. A stage 3 tumor, growing quickly, and found with time for treatment.

“If Ted had not found it we would not have known and it would have been different. He has saved the family.”

Science Confirms What Owners Already Know

While Ted the Border Collie’s story is incredible, it’s more common than one might think.

Disease can have a scent and cancerous cells produce a very distinct odor, which even human noses can smell in the late stages of the disease. But with a sense of smell that is 10,000 to 100,000 times superior than humans (a bloodhound alone has 300 million smell receptors), dogs can often detect the smell before it spreads, according to the American Kennel Club. And that early detection can mean all the difference.

Take it from Victor Calderone, New York City-born DJ, who did not want a dog at first.

“I was opposed to getting a dog for years while [son] Jivan and [wife] Athena campaigned hard to get one,” he explained.

And so, a short-haired black and white pup named “Tuco” was added to the family.

“I never imagined the immense love I would develop for Tuco and how he would change my world as I know it,” Calderone wrote on Instagram.

That change would come in the form of an early warning from Tuco that would save 54 year-old Victor Calderone’s life. According to Calderone, Tuco detected his cancer and triggered a symptom sending Calderone to the Emergency Room where he received an early diagnosis and confirmation from the attending doctor that “your dog saved your life”.

Tuco and Victor hanging out: Instagram

Beyond Miracles: The Future of Dog Detection

While not EVERY dog is a Sherlock Bones for illness in humans, thousands of years of domestication at man’s side has developed strong instincts in human’s furry partner in crime to keep an eye, or nose, out for danger. The dog’s ability to sniff out the sick has been so well-documented that scientists, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, are attempting to emulate their ability in new AI-driven diagnostic tools. And yet… researchers still can’t pinpoint HOW exactly dogs are doing it. Exactly WHAT dog’s are smelling is still a bit of mystery.

Regardless, the early-detection efforts of Ted the Border Collie, Tuco the rescue pup, and the many other hero dogs sniffing out disease is more evidence that a dog not only makes a better life… they can save a life.

Which Dog Breeds Fear Fireworks the Most? A Study Reveals Some Surprising Answers https://rockykanaka.com/which-dog-breeds-fear-fireworks-the-most-a-study-reveals-some-surprising-answers/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 16:03:07 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=119806 As the 4th of July nears, millions of Americans prep for BBQs, beach days, and—of course—fireworks. But while we humans ooh and ahh at the sparkling sky, for many dogs, the experience is downright terrifying. In fact, fireworks top the list of the most fear-inducing sounds for our canine companions. But not all breeds react the same—and now, we’ve got the data to prove it.

Which Dog Breeds Fear Fireworks the Most? A Study Reveals Some Surprising Answers

In a comprehensive study led by Linn Mari Storengen and Frode Lingaas and published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, over 5,000 dog owners in Norway were surveyed to uncover which breeds are most—and least—sensitive to noises like fireworks, gunshots, thunderstorms, and heavy traffic. (You can view the full abstract here: ScienceDirect)

The top takeaway? Fireworks were the most common trigger, with 21% of dogs showing strong or very strong fear reactions. The researchers also found that noise sensitivity is more common in older dogs, in females, and in neutered dogs—all important considerations when planning for a safe holiday.

But let’s talk breeds. Some pups are practically born with nerves of steel, while others are… well, let’s just say they’d rather hide under the bed until the 5th.

Most Likely to Cower:

Which Dog Breeds Fear Fireworks the Most? A Study Reveals Some Surprising Answers

The breeds most affected by fireworks were:

  • Norwegian Buhund
  • Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
  • Lagotto Romagnolo

These dogs had the highest rates of fear across the board. Why? Genetics likely play a major role. Researchers suggest some breeds may have inherited a stronger sensitivity to noise—meaning no amount of exposure will “toughen them up.” These breeds may need extra help come fireworks season, whether it’s calming treats, white noise machines, or a snug anxiety wrap.

Least Likely to Flinch:

Which Dog Breeds Fear Fireworks the Most? A Study Reveals Some Surprising Answers

On the flip side, these cool customers barely bat an eyelash:

  • Boxer
  • Chinese Crested
  • Great Dane

That’s right—despite their big, boisterous appearance, Boxers and Danes are among the least likely to freak out over loud noises. Chinese Cresteds may be small, but they’re apparently packing serious emotional armor when it comes to sonic booms.

Interestingly, dogs who were most fearful of fireworks were also more likely to show separation anxiety, fear of new situations, and longer recovery times after stress—indicating that noise sensitivity is often just one piece of a broader anxiety puzzle.

Before you head into the holiday festivities, take a moment to check in on your dog. If you know your pup is sensitive—or fits the profile—it’s best to skip the fireworks show and opt for a cozy night in.

Fireworks are beautiful for us—but for many dogs, they’re the literal stuff of nightmares.

🎇🐾 Stay safe out there, and give your dogs a little extra love this Independence Day.

Meet the 6 Inspiring Dogs Who Won Rocky Kanaka’s 2025 Rescue Photo Contest https://rockykanaka.com/meet-the-6-inspiring-dogs-who-won-rocky-kanakas-2025-rescue-photo-contest/ Fri, 30 May 2025 21:53:17 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=116130 The results are in from Rocky Kanaka’s annual Rescue & Shelter Dog Photo Contest and 2025’s winners have been announced!

A celebration of the magic rescue dogs bring to our lives, this yearly contest invites dog owners to submit photos of their rescue pups along with a blurb about what makes them special. Viewers get to vote for their favorite dog, and humans submitting their pups for consideration can even rally friends and family to help support them in the contest.

🥇 Third Place: Harlie CoCoa Beans Nutile

Third Place: Harlie CoCoa Beans Nutile

Three-year-old Husky x German Shepherd mix Harlie earned third place with 1,721 votes and one eye! Harlie had a rough start, and was abandoned in a home before being found and brought to a shelter. After a failed adoption that ended one day after it started, Harlie’s real forever family finally found her.

“She instantly locked eyes with our son and he wasn’t leaving without her,” says Harlie’s human, Julie. “When we adopted her she had 2 working eyes but due to primary glaucoma she recently had to have one eye removed…no matter how many working eyes she has she is LOVED and loving her best life!”

A whip-smart dog who is full of energy and loves treats, Harlie is always on the lookout for a tasty snack. Her humans say that when they watch Rocky Kanaka’s YouTube series Sitting With Dogs, Harlie will perk up any time Rocky says “treat!”

Congratulations on third place, Harlie—thanks for sharing your story!

🥇 Second Place: Derek

🥇 Second Place: Derek

In second place with 2,837 votes is Derek, a total snuggle bug from Texas whose humans say “his only mission in life is to be a best friend to every person that he meets…well, and also to avoid bath time however possible.”

Found wandering alone on a scalding hot summer day in Houston, Derek is now living the good life and has spent most of his post-adoption days enjoying long walks, belly rubs, and plenty of cheese! His gentle personality is obvious even in this photo, just look at how sweet he looks all snuggled up on the couch.

Congratulations on second place—Derek’s loving nature has earned him lots of love in return!

🏆 First Prize Winner: Bandit

🥇 Second Place: Derek

Bandit is 2025’s Rescue & Shelter Dog Photo Contest winner, earning first place with an impressive 3,044 votes! It isn’t just Bandit’s incredible good looks or amazing sense of style that earned him this year’s grand prize, his inspiring story is most certainly what caught so many voters’ attention.

Bandit spent the first seven years of his life outdoors in all weather—rain, cold, and even extreme heat—with no bed or regular access to water. Fed and given a drink only once a day, Bandit certainly never received affection, toys, treats, or any of the things a dog should have.

Eventually, Blair, a family of the person keeping (and barely caring for) Bandit had had enough. When they were asked to take care of Bandit when the owners went out of town, Blair and her husband quickly agreed, but instead took Bandit to their home and away from the yard where he had been neglected for so long.

Blair and her husband already had a Pitbull at home who was often selective with other dogs, but they feared that if they didn’t step in to help, Bandit would continue to lead a painful life. To their surprise, their dog Ruby immediately bonded with Bandit, and the two became inseparable. Seeing that Blair, her husband, and Ruby could provide a better home for Bandit, his original owners agreed to give him up when they returned from vacation.

Bandit has come a long way since he was rescued. Originally weighing 57 pounds, Bandit is now a healthy 74 pounds and loves going on walks as much as he enjoys sleeping in a king size bed. His life has made a 180, but his humans say he is the real hero here.

Eight months after adopting Bandit, Ruby—Blair and her husband’s original dog—was diagnosed with lymphoma, and vets were uncertain but not optimistic about her lifespan. Blair believes that the relationship Ruby formed with Bandit helped to give her more time following her diagnosis, and that her time with him was some of the best of her life.

“Ruby fell so in love with having her best friend Bandit, that her will to be a puppy again and live as long as she could [gave her] another year and 9 months of life even with her cancer,” says Blair, Bandit and Ruby’s human. “We know that we rescued Bandit, but Bandit rescued Ruby and gave her the last two years of her life with a best friend.”

You’ve earned first prize and more, Bandit—thank you for sharing your magic with us!

🏆 Judges’ Choice: Mercury

🥇 Second Place: Derek

The judges chose two amazing dogs who really stood out to them, and one of those awesome dogs is Mercury! It’s clear why this sweet pup caught the judges’ eye—despite a broken back that impacted the use of his back legs, Mercury is still tearing up the neighborhood on his wheels and isn’t about to slow down because of his disability.

Mercury was hit by a car in Mexico, which is how he sustained his back injury. After being brought to a rescue in Southern California for care, Mercury has made an amazing recovery and now lives with his adoptive humans. A cuddly and affectionate little dog, his humans say he’s happiest when he’s on the go. Luckily his wheels can go almost anywhere including hikes and trips to the beach!

We’re so glad you’re loving life, Mercury—congratulations on winning Judges’ Choice!

🏆 Judges’ Choice: Rooster

🥇 Second Place: Derek

Rooster is the second winner of the Judges’ Choice prize, and it was well earned! Handsome Rooster’s humans may have adopted him, but they didn’t make the decision themselves—Rooster was the one who chose them.

Originally visiting the shelter to meet and possibly adopt a different dog, Rooster lept into their car through the window and sat right down, basically saying “I’m ready to go home!” Since then, Rooster has been a vital member of his family, and not just as a companion. Rooster’s human has multiple sclerosis and experiences seizures, and he has learned how to help and comfort her during an episode.

Congratulations on your win and choosing the perfect forever family, Rooster—what a good boy!

⭐️ Shelter Dog Winner: Daniel

🥇 Second Place: Derek

The winner of the shelter dog prize is Daniel, an adorable Bulldog mix puppy who earned his rescue $1,000 with his adorable little face! Daniel is super social and tries to befriend everyone—human, dog, cat, and squirrel alike. Less than six months old, Daniel has a lot of growing and learning to do, but his shelter carers can already tell he’s going to be the sweetest boy when he grows up!

Submitted by A Home Of Their Own Animal Rescue operating in Maryland and the DC Metro Area, we’re happy to announce that Daniel has since been adopted, but there are still plenty of shelter dogs waiting for their forever families.

All participants in 2025’s contest received a $10 voucher for The Dog Bakery as a ‘thank you’ for submitting a photo. The first place winner and the judges’ choice winners received extra special grand prizes featuring gift cards, merch, dog treats, food from Sundays for Dogs, coffee from Flip Coffee, and more.

Animal shelters were also invited to participate this year by submitting photos of adoptable dogs searching for homes. The adoptable pup with the most votes earned their shelter a $1,000 cash prize!

If these photos and stories of rescue dogs have inspired you, consider visiting your local rescue to meet the resident dogs—your new best friend is waiting!

Dealing With a Hyper Puppy? This Corgi Owner Has the Perfect Solution https://rockykanaka.com/dealing-with-a-hyper-puppy-this-corgi-owner-has-the-perfect-solution/ Fri, 30 May 2025 16:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=115637 Every puppy owner knows too well the next-level kind of chaos that these adorable fur babies come with. We all love our sweet little pups for sure. Sometimes, though, their boundless energy can be a lot to deal with.

Raising a puppy pretty much means constantly pleading with them to calm down, even if it’s just for a few minutes, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet. It’s even worse if your puppy doesn’t get enough mental stimulation every day, because that means they’ll likely turn into a playful troublemaker due to excessive boredom and pent-up energy. (Watch the video below)

@balancingkatie Lick mats have saved my sanity with this puppy 👏🏼 Licking = endorphins = a more regulated, less chaotic little gremlin. If this sounds like your struggle right now, you’re not alone. TikTok user @balancingkatie, a Corgi puppy owner, recently shared her experience with her beautifully chaotic pup, and it’s no surprise that several other puppy owner users can relate to this in the video’s comments section.

The Good News…

Thankfully, Katie has found the perfect solution to tackle her Corgi’s energy chaos, and we have a feeling it might interest you: a lick mat.

“Lick mats have saved my sanity with this puppy…I use them before crate time, when he’s overstimulated, or honestly, when I just need 10 minutes to breathe. Fav lick mat additions: peanut butter, smashed banana, Greek yoghurt, apple sauce,” Kate captioned in the video.

According to Katie, lick mats help keep her Corgi calm and mentally engaged when he’d otherwise be causing trouble. And going by the video, we have to admit that this adorable Corgi seems to be enjoying every bit of his lick mat.

“Lick mats are a MUST for puppies,” Katie emphasized.

What Are Lick Mats for Dogs?

Dealing With a Hyper Puppy? This Corgi Owner Has the Perfect Solution
Source: www.amazon.com

Lick mats are dog enrichment toys designed to keep your pup entertained and mentally stimulated. While they come in different sizes, shapes, and textures, all lick mats have one thing in common: they’re all gentle on dogs’ tongues. These mats often feature soft, maze-like patterns and ridges to hold dog-friendly treats and toppings. The idea behind lick mats is simple: to make it harder for your dog to quickly snack on the treats and toppings you’ve smeared on the mat.

In other words, lick mats are designed to ensure your dog spends a lot of time trying to lick up all delicious foods and treats trapped in the grooves and ridges.

These mats transform a simple snacking session into a mentally stimulating game, as your dog’s mind will be engaged throughout as they try to figure out how to lick clean the entire mat. It’s for this reason that lick mats are often considered among the most effective mental enrichment tools for dogs.

It’s worth mentioning that, just as with any other enrichment tool or toy for dogs, it’s important for you to supervise your pup when they’re using a lick mat. Some dogs can turn a lick mat into a chew toy, putting them at risk of choking on the mat’s material.

5 Key Benefits of Lick Mats for Dogs

Lick mat
Source: www.amazon.com
  • Promotes Calmness & Relaxation

According to pet health experts from the Integrative Veterinary Services of Missouri, lick mats have a soothing effect on dogs. The repetitive licking triggers the release of endorphins, feel-good hormones that make your dog feel calmer.

  • Provides Mental Stimulation

In dogs, mental stimulation is equally important as physical activity. Lick mats are great for mental stimulation as they keep a dog’s brain active throughout the licking session. This mental enrichment goes a long way in curbing undesirable behaviour caused by pent-up energy.

  • A Boredom Buster

If you’re looking for exciting ways to keep your bored dog entertained indoors, a lick mat will get the job perfectly done. “Lick mats are a great indoor activity when the weather keeps dogs inside,” says Dr. Heather Napolitano, DVM, of MobiPetCare

  • A Great Distraction Tool

Lick mats come in handy when you want to keep your dog distracted from activities that they don’t particularly enjoy. For example, during bath time or when trimming their nails. Plus, according to Dr. Matt Bradley, DVM, of ModernVet, lick mats are also a fantastic distraction tool when administering injections to dogs.

  • Promotes Dental Health

According to Jill Trullinger of Ask a Vet Tech, the repetitive licking increases saliva production in your dog’s mouth, which in turn, cleans their teeth, tongue, and gums. Ultimately, this contributes to better oral hygiene.

Dog Ownership Can Help Your Dating Life. Here’s How…  https://rockykanaka.com/dog-ownership-can-help-your-dating-life-heres-how/ Fri, 14 Feb 2025 14:45:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=61873 Many single people choose to get a dog, because the companionship of a four legged friend can make a person feel more complete and less lonely. But as it turns out, dogs can help their owners be less lonely in other ways – by acting as a wingman, or rather, wing-kanine.

Dog Ownership Can Help Your Dating Life

A recent YouGov survey found that half of Americans are more willing to date someone if they have a dog, and a ManyPets survey found 86% of people feel their dog has positively affected their dating life. Not bad for something that can only bark!

1. Dogs Can Help  Break the Ice

It’s not always socially acceptable to talk to a stranger – unless they have a dog, the ultimate ice breaker. A dog is an instant conversation topic, since it’s totally kosher to ask what kind of breed is it? What’s its name? Is it a boy or a girl? According to ManyPets, one in 10 dating dog owners said their dog actually helped them meet and connect with someone else who loved dogs. Move over, Cupid!

2. Dogs Can Show You What a Potential Partner is Like

Dog Ownership Can Help Your Dating Life

According to the New York Times, people perceive dog owners as more approachable, empathetic, and happier. How people treat their pets says a lot about them. If someone is caring towards their dog, it’s a good indication they’re going to be a caring partner or parent. And if someone is mean to their mutt… it’s better to show them the door.

3. A Good Judge of Character

Dog Ownership Can Help Your Dating Life

The door swings both ways, and the way your dog acts towards a potential partner can say just as much. A study published in Neuroscience and Biobehavioural Reviews found that dogs can tell if someone is being rude or mean to a human, so if your dog isn’t feeling it with your potential partner, it could be a sign that it’s time to trust your gut – or your dog’s gut.

4. Dogs Can Make Matches on Dating Apps

Dog Ownership Can Help Your Dating Life

You don’t need to have your dog with you IRL to find love. Just having a dog in your dating profile photo can make someone more likely to swipe right on you. According to ManyPets, 34% of people said they were more attracted to someone with a dog in their photo. And dogs can get a conversation flowing online, too. Per the same survey,  63% of people said that they were more likely to meet up with someone after talking about their dog online.

5. Dogs Can Help You Find Common Values

A dog is a very big part of a dog owner’s life, and “must love dogs” is no joke. According to ManyPets, 55% of people said they would never date someone who didn’t like dogs. When it comes to dating, knowing what you don’t want is just as important as knowing what you do.

6. Owning a Dog Can Make You More Confident

Dogs love unconditionally. If there’s someone at home who loves you no matter what, it can make you feel as if you deserve love, which, in turn, can make you feel more confident as you put yourself out there – even when things go sour with a human partner.

7. Dogs are Always There for You

If a potential partner doesn’t work out, your dog will still be there to cheer you up. According to the University of New Mexico, dogs can reduce anxiety, depression, and loneliness. It’s a steady reminder that someone always loves you, no matter what. Love interests may come and go, but your dog’s love is forever.

Some brands have made canines an integral part of their identity, from product packaging to iconic commercials. Let’s take a closer look at companies that have embraced dogs as part of their branding, starting with one of the most recognizable examples.

With its wiry coat, pointed ears, and dignified demeanor, the Scottie embodies both strength and charm. Its roots trace back to Scotland, making it a fitting mascot for a brand that prides itself on its Scottish heritage. These traits make Duke the perfect ambassador for Bush’s Best, a company that prides itself on family values and wholesome products. 5 Simple Tips for a Happy Dog Even While You’re at Work https://rockykanaka.com/tips-happy-dog-even-when-at-work/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 18:11:31 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=8877 Your furry friends are at their happiest when they’re around you. They’re always lying next to you, wagging their tails, or trying to play with you. They’re so used to your presence that watching you go to work every morning could dampen their mood.

And waiting for you to walk through the door is their happiest moment. Check out Yodi’s reaction when he sees his mom come home from work.

Unfortunately, your boss won’t accept the “my dog is home alone” excuse to give you the day off. The trick is to find ways to keep your pup entertained without you being around them all day. The methods you choose for maintaining a happy dog should do at least one of the following:

  • Stimulate them mentally
  • Improve their physical health
  • Keep them entertained
  • Ease their separation anxiety
  • Improve their behavior

Keeping a happy dog is as easy as understanding its behaviors. You can then choose methods that are specific to them. Here are my five tips for keeping your canine happy while at work:

1. Get Your Dogs Some Interactive Toys

dog playing with its favorite toys

Toys keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated. They also tire them out, ensuring that your furry friend can sleep through a huge chunk of the day. There are many interactive dog toys to choose from, including:

Since you’re choosing a toy your dog will play with without supervision, be sure to pick a safe one—avoid those that pose choking hazards.

Even more important, consider the environment and conditions in which your dog will be playing with the toys. Does the area environment provide enough space to play around with that specific toy? Will your dog break glass around the play area?

Be sure to pick a toy that also factors in any disability they have. For instance, there are plenty of toys for blind dogs you can choose from if your pooch can’t see.

Lastly, make sure your toy of choice aligns with your dog’s play style. This decision increases the amount of engagement your pup can get from a single toy. Most dogs I’ve interacted with have one of the following playstyles:

Tugging and Chewing

If your dog is often gnawing on your furniture and shoes, get them chewing toys. Ideally, look for durable models that won’t break down after a few days of use. Besides ensuring the safety of your furry friend, you’ll get to save yourself from making multiple trips to the pet store.

Self-Playing

This is your dog’s playstyle if they’re always playing by themselves. The ideal toys will be something that can keep them entertained while alone. Some good examples are treat-releasing puzzle toys and hide-and-seek plush toys.

Chasing

This is for dogs that love chasing toys, people, or other hounds around. Look for toys that your pup can throw around and chase. Alternatively, get ones that automatically throw objects for your dog to fetch. Be sure to give your pooch enough space to run around.

Seniors’ Play Style

Old dogs tend to avoid moving around, but this can be detrimental to their health. They can become obese and even develop movement disorders if they fail to exercise enough. Look for pet toys that encourage your senior dogs to get up and wander around, however minimal the movement is.

2. Create a Playlist for Your Happy Dog

a dog with headphones listening to music

Did you know that you might have the same music taste as your dog? A recent study showed that music could help pups at animal shelters relax. Music therapy can reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol, reduce barking, and lower respiration rates. Music also helps drown outdoor noise that could aggravate your pooch.

If you need to leave your dog happy at home, consider creating a playlist it can enjoy throughout the day. Choose music with soft tunes, a catchy rhythm, and a relaxing appeal.

Some of the best genres to consider are reggae, soft rock, and classical music. Since dogs tend to have more sensitive hearing than humans, be sure to avoid high-frequency music.

On the other paw, be sure to mix different genres. Your dog might get used to a specific genre of music to the point where it can no longer calm them down. If you’re looking for inspiration, here’s how Gnash created music that his dog enjoys:

The positive thing is that you don’t have to handpick your pupper’s music from scratch. There are multiple dog-targeted playlists online. Find one that makes your dog happy on YouTube or Spotify. Best of all, some last up to 15 hours, giving you plenty of music to play for your dog while you’re out.

3. Get Your Furry Friend a Dog Walker

Walking your dog helps it get rid of pent-up energy. Otherwise, it might focus this energy towards negative behaviors such as chewing on furniture.

“There are so many under-exercised and under-entertained dogs and that’s resulting in medical and destructive behavioral problems.”

Dr. Kat Miller, an animal behaviorist and the ASPCA’s director of anti-cruelty behavior research

Walking your dog often could benefit it by:

  • Improving its mental stimulation.
  • Helping it exercise.
  • Helping it socialize with its immediate environment.
  • Acting as a training opportunity for eliminating some of your dog’s unwanted behavior.

Since you might not have the time to walk your pup, why not hire someone to do it for you? This way, you won’t have to worry about your dog-walking hours eating into your working hours. Dog walkers can also double as trainers for your pet and help you eliminate unwanted behavior like social anxiety and incessant barking.

You should ideally walk your dog for 30 minutes to two hours daily, according to PetMD. However, the total amount of time you should spend walking your dog will depend on various factors, including their age, health, and exercise tolerance.

Most importantly, focus on your dog’s breed to understand how much exercise it needs. Certain breeds call for exercise sessions that go beyond a simple walk. Here’s a table representing how much exercise each dog breed needs:

  • Great Dane

4. Monitor Your Dog Remotely

How well can you determine when your dog is in distress at home? Many things could make them unhappy, from boredom to poor house ventilation. While you can eliminate most issues by brainstorming and coming up with solutions, some issues might need you to observe your pet’s behavior with time.

We love the Furbo. This clever device allows you to monitor your pet, talk to them and even throw a treat.

If you’re looking to get technical about the wellbeing of your furry friend, consider buying a few gadgets to help you monitor your home’s:

  • Ventilation
  • Humidity
  • Temperatures
  • CO2 levels
  • Equipment failures (heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems)

Some gadgets even allow you to make adjustments remotely. The trick is to invest in the right sensors for your home first. For instance, buying a smart thermostat not only allows you to monitor your home’s temperature but also adjust it to your dog’s needs.

Ideally, you should connect these gadgets to your phone. Whenever an anomaly occurs, you’ll get a notification to your phone, after which you can make the right adjustment.

Most importantly, ensure that you invest in a good remote video recorder. Since your pet is spending a lot of time alone, you might want to know what they’re doing and to monitor if they’re a happy dog when alone. Ideally, the video recorder should have a wide enough angle to help you see the majority of the places your dog spends time.

If you have a pooch that suffers from separation anxiety, consider purchasing speakers that allow you to talk to and soothe your pet too. The Furbo, pictured above, allows for two way communication. Use this opportunity to calm your dog whenever they seem anxious. The Furbo even comes with treat dispensers for rewarding your pooch for good behavior.

5. Treat Your Dog to Some Live Entertainment

dog staring outside a window

Imagine spending the entire day staring at blank walls. Your dog is bound to get bored with the same view every day. Why not let your pup see the world from your window?

This plan gives them something different to watch every day. Of course, you might have to place a chair close to your window to ensure your dog reaches the window’s height. Be sure to close your windows to avoid your pet escaping.

Even more important, ensure your canine won’t act up after seeing strangers and pets strolling outside your window. If they aren’t yet used to watching people walking around, place them at windows that have fewer people wandering by.

Keep Your Dog Relaxed and Entertained

Nothing can replace the comfort your presence offers your dogs—but you need to train them to be happy even without you around. The tips above will make for a happy dog while ensuring their health and wellbeing.
