I’ve met countless dogs over the years, but few have left an impression like Hoss. This Neapolitan Mastiff was a true gentle giant—massive in stature, with a heart every bit as grand. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he bore more than just his considerable size; he carried the weight of suffering, his once-magnificent coat overwhelmed by a relentless infestation. Mel, our dedicated groomer, took to the task like a warrior in a battle. She started with a meticulous application of flea and tick shampoo, creating a barrier at his neck, ensuring none of the critters could escape to his head. As she worked, her fingers found the bumps of ticks hidden in his fur, a testament to his silent suffering.

The shampoo had to sit, and as we waited, the gravity of Hoss’s condition became heartbreakingly clear. Simba’s story was one that would tug at the heartstrings of even the most seasoned shelter staff. A senior dog with a once-fluffy coat that had turned into a prison of mats and sores. His previous owners had surrendered him, not caring to look back at the polar bear of a dog whose eyes still held a glimmer of hope. Mel’s task was monumental. As she began to work through the mats, it was clear that Simba’s neglect ran deep. The mats were so tight they had caused sores, and his tail had become a heavy burden he dragged around.

The grooming session was a marathon, with Mel and Cheryl, our volunteer coordinator, working in tandem to free Simba from his painful past. The bath was a revelation, the water turning murky as years of neglect were washed away. Simba stood through it all, a stoic figure finding comfort in the hands of those who cared. The drying took time, his double coat holding onto water as if it were memories of his past. But as he emerged, it was as if he was shedding years of sorrow, his transformation not just physical but spiritual. Simba’s adoption on the very same day was a victory for all of us, a reminder of why we do what we do.

Greta’s eyes told a story of silent suffering. She was heartbreakingly skinny, her body bearing the signs of overbreeding. Yet, when she arrived at the shelter, she was met with love at first sight from the staff. Her eagerness to jump into the tub for Mel was a sign of trust, a willingness to embrace the care we were ready to give. Her coat was filthy, a testament to a life of neglect, possibly spent in someone’s backyard, forgotten and unloved.

Her journey to recovery would be a long one, but with the help of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, who renamed her Guadalupe, she was on her way to finding a family that would give her the love she deserved.

But here’s the real truth: it doesn’t have to be this way every single time. If your dog dreads bath time, there are clever hacks you can implement to ensure this grooming ritual becomes a quicker, less stressful experience for them — and for you, too. 

One dog owner has earned endless praise online after sharing little-known yet effective hacks that have made bath time more enjoyable for her anxious Australian Cattle Dog. In a video posted on her TikTok account @thezcattledogs, she revealed four surprisingly helpful tips for pet parents who struggle with bathing their pups. 

#1: Use a Non-Slip Mat 

For a lot of dogs, slippery surfaces like the bathtub can trigger a fear response because of how unstable their paws feel on these surfaces. Spreading a non-slip mat on the bathtub’s surface before your dog gets in can go a long way in easing their anxiety, as they will feel more comfortable and stable while inside the tub. 

#2: Get a Lick Mat 

Lick mats are a fantastic distraction tool for dogs who dread bath time. All you need to do is stick the lick mat on the shower wall and smear your dog’s favorite treat all over the mat. That way, your furry friend will be busy enjoying their yummy treat as you lather them up. Lick mats pretty much turn bath time into a fun treat time. Your dog will be too distracted (in a good way) to even remember that they aren’t a fan of running water. 

“Using a lick mat has really helped us….I stick it to the wall and let my dog get comfortable before I even turn the shower on,” she explains.

#3: Use a Quality, Multi-Purpose Dog Shampoo 

Being able to spend less time in the bathtub is usually a silent wish for most dogs who hate water. So, if you want to make your dog’s wish come true, consider using a multi-purpose pet shampoo.

Mel, our skilled groomer, was quick to identify the urgent needs of this little dog. She was a stray, her fur matted and her skin in poor condition, a far cry from the Pomeranian’s typically luxurious coat. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be a challenging grooming session.

Beginning the Transformation

The grooming process revealed the severity of neglect the Pomeranian had suffered. Her fur was so matted that it seemed to mask her true appearance. As Mel worked, she discovered the dog’s skin was dry and flaky, indicative of the lack of care she had endured.

As the grooming progressed, the extent of the neglect became more apparent. The Pomeranian’s skin was in terrible condition, covered in dead, dry skin. The most distressing part was the discovery of poo around her bottom, which had caused significant irritation.

Feeding your dog plain, low-fat yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog’s intestines in balance and helps keep yeast infections at bay.

A little bit of yogurt in your pet’s diet is not only a healthy treat, but can boost the immune system so that skin and ear yeast infections can’t take hold. Yogurt is also a great natural eczema treatment for dogs, and it works from the inside out for long-term relief.

When my itchy dog was a puppy, I would give her a teaspoon of yogurt daily to help build immunity and prevent diarrhea.

4. Chamomile Tea & Herbal Tea soaks

Chamomile tea & Herbal Tea soaks are a natural anti-inflammatory for dogs’ skin, and when chilled in the refrigerator, can alleviate any minor skin irritations when sprayed on sensitive, itchy spots. The chilled tea kills yeast and bacteria on the skin and relieves inflammation.

When  my itchy dog starts gnawing on her paws, I like to either spray them with the chamomile or just have her soak her paws in a small tub of the cold tea. Warm chamomile tea bags can soothe itchy, irritated eyes for both you and your dog.

5. Ground oatmeal 

Ground oatmeal poured into a bath or a shampoo, is an age-old remedy for itching, inflamed skin. You can either use the baby oatmeal cereal found at your local grocery store or grind it yourself in your food processor or coffee grinder. Your dog will love sitting in a warm bath containing oatmeal because it brings immediate relief to irritated area. 

Alternative- buy colloidal oatmeal shampoo and conditioner all ready mixed and ready to go.

6. CBD for Pets

It naturally helps reduce inflammation in all parts of the body, which can reduce the symptoms irritation and itchiness.

In addition, it helps reduce a dog’s anxiety and calms them. Many times dogs work themselves into a frenzy with the constant scratching. CBD oil can reduce this. 7. Exercise

Believe it or not, exercise is one of the best ways to get a dog to forget about their itchy skin. When they’re playing and romping about, their mind is distracted and they don’t have time to worry about their itchy skin.  So, go out on walks, let your dog out more to play, go to the dog park go on walks. 

No time for long walks? hire a dog walker. It’s easy. If you have a phone, download an app like Rover and you can hook up with a dog walker.

But, for your own peace of mind, get a GPS tracker or Air Tag Collar for your dog, that way if you’re at work and the dog’s with the dog walker you’ll know EXACTLY where your dog is.

8. Epsom salt

Epsom salt soaks and heat packs can reduce the swelling of itchy paws and inflamed sores. A bath of warm water and Epsom salt also speeds up the healing time for any small, open sores, particularly when combined with veterinary antibiotics.

9. Evening primrose oil 

An essential oil that has active anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties. You can apply primrose oil directly to your dog’s skin to treat dry or itchy skin issues. Likewise, giving your dog evening primrose oil by mouth helps calm allergies and boosts the immune system – and it only takes a few drops on her food or in her water to do the trick.

10. Treats with supplements 

What dog doesn’t love a meaty treat? (All dogs everywhere!). Look for treats that contain ingredients like omega fatty acids which are really good for a dog’s coat and immune system. We recommend these treats developed specifically for skin & coats

11. Make a Eucalyptus Wash

Steep 1 teaspoon dried eucalyptus  (or 2 tablespoons of fresh eucalyptus) in a pint of boiling water for 10 minutes, covered. Allow the eucalyptus water to cool to body temperature and pour it over your dog after her final rinse. Rub the mixture in and towel her dry without further rinsing. The eucalyptus in the conditioner repels fleas while promoting a soft, glossy coat. 

Alternative: Buy a an all natural eucalyptus shampoo. Hint- make sure that it’s real eucalyptus essential oil, and not a fragrance.

Note: Under no circumstances should your dog ingest eucalyptus. This is only recommended for topical use in moderation and under supervision. As with all products your pet may have allergies or react to different products in different ways. Please consult your vet before using.

12. Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

If your pooch hates getting into the water, an all-natural dry shampoo can keep her skin healthy and coat smelling good. Spread ½-cup to 1-cup of whole bran, uncooked oatmeal, or cornmeal on a cookie sheet and warm in the oven on low heat for 5 minutes to bring out the natural oils in the grain.

Grab a handful of the grain (leaving the rest in the oven to stay warm) and rub it into your dog’s fur and skin with a towel, concentrating on the greasy, dirty areas. Then thoroughly brush the areas to remove all the grain. This dry shampoo exfoliates the skin while removing any nasty residue from your dog’s coat. 

Alternative: Buy an in between grooming spray that’s already mixed and ready to go.

13. Make an Essential Oil Shampoo

Add a few drops of eucalyptus or pennyroyal essential oil to natural shampoo or castile soap. Rinse your dog with clear water. Rinse again with vinegar-water (1 tbsp. to 1 pint warm water). This easy-to-make shampoo and rinse removes soap residue and prevents the dandruff that can result in itchy skin. 

Alternative: Buy a an all natural eucalyptus  shampoo  that’s already mixed and ready to go. Hint- make sure that it’s real eucalyptus essential oil, and not a fragrance.

14. Herbal Flea Powder

Combine one part each of as many of these dried and powdered herbs as you can find: rosemary, fennel, eucalyptus, rue, yellow dock, and wormwood. Put this mixture in a clean, dry shaker-type jar, like one used for parsley flakes or Parmesan cheese.

Apply the flea powder sparingly to the base of your dog’s coat by brushing back the hair first, then sprinkling in small amounts around the neck, belly, and back. You’ll need to use the powder several times a week for a severe flea infestation, and place your pooch outside in they yard so the repelled fleas don’t end up in your home. Remember, this powder only repels the pests…it does not kill them.

Alternative: Buy all natural off-the-shelf sprays. We like the all natural flea spray.

15. Natural Skin Tonic

This DIY anti-itch for dogs is a lemon-based tonic that not only repels fleas, but it also works as a general skin toner for itchy pets. Thinly slice a whole lemon, including the rind, and steep it overnight in a pot of boiling water. The cooling water draws out d-limonene, vitamin C, and other healing ingredients found in the whole lemon. The next day, sponge it on your dog’s skin and let the solution air-dry. You can use the lemon tonic daily for cases of heavy flea infestation. 

Alternative: targeted anti-itch sprays made with essential oils and herbs that can focus on specific itchy spots on your dog and bring immediate relief to irritation and inflammation.

16. Baking Soda

Prepare a thick paste by using a 50/50 mix of baking soda and water. Apply to affected areas of your dog’s skin, leave for 20 minutes, and then rinse off. Alternatively add one cup of baking soda to your dog’s bath water if he is itching all over.

Prepare a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar with water, and use a spray bottle to apply it to affected areas. Be sure to buy the one that says “With the Mother”. This combo makes the ultimate homemade itchy dog spray, and since dogs don’t like the taste of apple cider vinegar, it can also help to prevent them from chewing on their hot spots and sores. 18. Give your dog a bath

There is a common misconception that you shouldn’t bathe your dogs very often and that doing so can make skin conditions worse. Every night I mix up my dogs food with some coconut oil. In the summer it’s really easy because the oil is liquid due to the hot weather.

In the winter it solidifies so you have to microwave it a few seconds before putting it on your dog’s food. Coconut oil is excellent for your dog’s coat and general health. You don’t need a dog specific coconut oil, a high quality human brand will do. You can also checkout treats that have the coconut baked right in.

A Challenging Journey: Wiggles’ Condition and Skin Care

Upon closer inspection, the shelter team noticed signs of wear on Wiggles’ skin and coat—evidence of her struggles with mobility. Mel, the shelter groomer, decided to give Wiggles a medicated bath to ease her irritated skin and provide some relief. Mel pointed out, “I think it’s good for the sores all over her from dragging herself around.” Despite her physical discomfort, Wiggles is friendly and bright, maintaining a bubbly personality that shines through her challenges.

The Mystery of Wiggles’ Past

Wiggles came to Animal Friends of the Valleys as an anonymous arrival, left in the shelter’s night drop without any background or history. Rocky Kanaka speculates that her family may have abandoned her due to the cost of managing her medical issues. Although little is known about her past, everyone at the shelter is committed to giving Wiggles the care and support she deserves.

“I’m just happy that she’s here now, in the presence of loving people who can help her,” said Rocky, emphasizing the team’s devotion to Wiggles.

Exploring Medical Options for Wiggles’ Mobility Issues

Rocky and Mel sought advice from Mandy, a veterinary technician, to better understand Wiggles’ unique needs. Mandy explained that wrapping wounds could sometimes worsen an infection by trapping bacteria, stressing the importance of a careful approach to her care. She suggested that a wheelchair might be helpful, but only after a thorough veterinary assessment confirms it would be appropriate.

Mel agreed, “We’re going to give her a medicated bath to make her feel better,” with plans to explore further treatment options once they receive a veterinarian’s recommendations.

Looking Ahead: Wiggles’ Path to Recovery

After her bath and a spritz of conditioner, Wiggles returned to her kennel looking refreshed, complete with a new bandana. Surprisingly, Cole did well getting groomed and bathed—he even let the groomer bundle him up in a towel afterward and give him some love! All that matted fur had been tugging and pulling at his skin, creating sore spots that would sear with pain every time his fur moved or was touched. Once he was unburdened and all the mats were shaved away, Cole showed everyone he was just a sweet, scared boy. 

Cole appears to have already been adopted, all thanks to his rescuers who didn’t give up on him when he showed “aggression.” A dog in pain is likely to growl, nip, or bite to protect themselves or out of fear. Luckily, the Valley Animal Center staff saw through his reactive exterior and found the root of the problem.

Is Matted Fur Painful? 

When you choose a “hair dog” like a Poodle, you must be prepared for the responsibility of having them groomed regularly. Without at-home maintenance like brushing and professional grooming services, hair dogs’ fur mats quickly. Mats aren’t just an aesthetic issue, they can also cause serious skin problems, hair loss, and pain. Matted fur is also unhygienic, and can harbor bacteria, trap moisture and mold, collect bugs, etc. Under matted fur, dogs can experience skin infections, painful hot spots, skin tears, and even tissue necrosis. Matting is much more serious than just looking a little messy. 

How Often Should Poodles Be Groomed? 

Poodles should be groomed every 4–8 weeks but should be brushed daily or every other day to prevent matting and protect their coats from damage. If you bring an overgrown, matted Poodle to the groomer they might not be able to preserve coat length. Mats often need to be shaved out of the fur, and your Poodle can go from a long luxurious coat to a short puppy cut in one session if you don’t do at-home care between professional grooms. 

Many dog breeds don’t require professional grooming. One of the reasons I chose Chihuahua mixes is because they have short, smooth coats that don’t require brushing or trimming and can easily be bathed at home. When you choose a dog breed, factor in the time commitment and financial responsibility of grooming and select a breed with a coat you can easily manage. 

Pearl was in desperate need of help, and luckily, Mel, the shelter’s groomer, was ready to step in. Mel is a pro, but even she admitted this was a special case. It wasn’t just a few tangles; this poor girl’s fur was so matted that it was impossible to comb through. There was no other option but to shave her down completely.

Shaving A Cat With Matted Fur

Watching Mel work, I could see the patience and care that went into every move. I don’t know if you’ve ever shaved a cat, but it’s no easy task—especially when the mats are so tight to the skin. One wrong move, and you could easily cut them. Mel explained how tricky it was, and I could see how much focus it took. Pearl, meanwhile, was a trooper through the entire process. She hardly struggled, which is rare for any cat in this situation, let alone one who had been through as much as Pearl.

As Mel shaved off layer after layer of matted fur, you could almost see the relief in Pearl’s eyes. She had been living with this tangled mess for who knows how long, and you could tell she just wanted it gone. I couldn’t help but feel for her, especially as Mel started picking stickers out of her skin. It must have been such a painful experience for this poor kitty.

After Mel had shaved her body, it was time for a flea bath. You know how most cats hate water? Well, Pearl didn’t flail or panic like you’d expect. Instead, she seemed to actually enjoy the bath. It was heartwarming to watch her give Mel these loving, almost grateful glances as the dirt and grime were washed away. It was as if Pearl knew she was finally being cared for.

Once Pearl was dried off and conditioned, she looked like a completely different cat. It was incredible. She went from a tangled, painful mess to a sleek, adorable kitty who finally had the freedom to groom herself again.

Pearl’s Happy Ending

Here’s the best part: after everything Pearl went through, she found her happy ending. Pearl has since been adopted by a loving family, and she’s thriving in her new home. Her journey from neglect to a fresh start is the kind of story that reminds me why I do what I do. It’s amazing what a little love and care can do for an animal in need.

A Much-Needed Makeover

From the moment Mel saw Ruthie, she could tell that beneath the matted fur and tired eyes was a sweet dog just waiting to feel good again. “She’s going to look so good cleaned up,” Mel said with a smile. As Mel began trimming Ruthie’s tangled hair, I was amazed at how trusting Ruthie was, even as her little paws were clipped and her fur was brushed out. She was calm, almost as if she knew Mel was there to help her. I think Ruthie sensed the love and care we were offering her.

Discovering Ruthie’s Health Issues

During the bath, Mel noticed something off. One of Ruthie’s eyes had a yellow discharge, possibly from an infection. I felt a pang of concern, but thankfully, the shelter was ready to step in with pain meds to help her out. Despite the eye infection, Ruthie seemed completely relaxed, enjoying the warm water as Mel bathed her. She was even starting to doze off—it was clear this bath was the most peace she’d felt in a long time.

I watched as Mel had to hold Ruthie up during the bath because she was literally falling asleep in the warm water. I couldn’t help but smile as Ruthie let out soft, contented grunts while being towel-dried. It was like watching a little dog start to trust again. When the dryer came out, she wasn’t too thrilled, especially when the air blew in her face. Still, she handled it like a champ.

A New Look and a New Hope

Once the grooming was almost done, Mel focused on cleaning up the fur around Ruthie’s eyes to avoid irritation as her eye healed. She finished up by trimming Ruthie’s beard and making sure her face looked balanced. And the finishing touch? An adorable little bow on Ruthie’s collar. I could see the difference in Ruthie—she was looking better and feeling better, though she also looked ready for a nap!

Here’s the best part of Ruthie’s story: shortly after her makeover, she was rescued by Frosted Faces Foundation! This incredible organization specializes in giving senior dogs a second chance at a happy life, and Ruthie is now living comfortably and loved.
