Hoss the Mastiff: From Neglected Castaway to Regal King

I’ve met countless dogs over the years, but few have left an impression like Hoss. This Neapolitan Mastiff was a true gentle giant—massive in stature, with a heart every bit as grand. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he bore more than just his considerable size; he carried the weight of suffering, his once-magnificent coat overwhelmed by a relentless infestation. (Watch Video Above)

Mel, our dedicated groomer, took to the task like a warrior in a battle. She started with a meticulous application of flea and tick shampoo, creating a barrier at his neck, ensuring none of the critters could escape to his head. As she worked, her fingers found the bumps of ticks hidden in his fur, a testament to his silent suffering.

The shampoo had to sit, and as we waited, the gravity of Hoss’s condition became heartbreakingly clear. The ticks began to emerge from his skin, even from between his toes, revealing the extent of his neglect. Mel’s resolve never wavered. She removed each tick with a precision that spoke of her years of experience and a compassion that could only come from the heart.

Hoss, for his part, remained stoic, a testament to his extraordinary nature. He allowed Mel to clean his ears and stood patiently as she worked through his coat, tick by tick. By the time he was draped in a bandana, looking every bit the regal creature he was meant to be, it was clear Hoss was not just groomed; he was reborn.

2. Benny’s Foxtail Fiasco: A Transformation That Will Shock You

shelter dog makeover-grooming

Then there was Benny, a labradoodle with a coat as wild as the foxtails that had become entangled within it. His arrival at the shelter was marked by anxiety and pain, his eyes darting around, body tense. Mel knew the task at hand was delicate. She began by cutting away the mats, revealing the skin that had been hidden beneath. Benny flinched, the discomfort evident, but Mel’s gentle touch and soothing words provided a balm to his anxiety.

shelter dog makeover-grooming

As she bathed him with medicated shampoo, the transformation was palpable. With each rinse, more of the painful stickies were washed away, and Benny’s true spirit began to shine through. The drying process was a spectacle, with foxtails flying off as if in a hurry to leave behind the dog they had tormented. When the last of the stickies was removed, Benny’s relief was immediate. He emerged not just cleaner, but with a newfound confidence, his tail wagging as if to say, “I am ready for my new life.” And indeed, he was, for shortly after his grooming, he found his forever home.

3. Simba’s Matted Mess Makeover: A Tale of Hope and Second Chances

Simba’s story was one that would tug at the heartstrings of even the most seasoned shelter staff. A senior dog with a once-fluffy coat that had turned into a prison of mats and sores. His previous owners had surrendered him, not caring to look back at the polar bear of a dog whose eyes still held a glimmer of hope. Mel’s task was monumental. As she began to work through the mats, it was clear that Simba’s neglect ran deep. The mats were so tight they had caused sores, and his tail had become a heavy burden he dragged around.

shelter dog makeover-grooming

The grooming session was a marathon, with Mel and Cheryl, our volunteer coordinator, working in tandem to free Simba from his painful past. The bath was a revelation, the water turning murky as years of neglect were washed away. Simba stood through it all, a stoic figure finding comfort in the hands of those who cared. The drying took time, his double coat holding onto water as if it were memories of his past. But as he emerged, it was as if he was shedding years of sorrow, his transformation not just physical but spiritual. Simba’s adoption on the very same day was a victory for all of us, a reminder of why we do what we do.

4. Greta’s Silent Suffering: How a Neglected Dog Found Her Voice

Greta’s eyes told a story of silent suffering. She was heartbreakingly skinny, her body bearing the signs of overbreeding. Yet, when she arrived at the shelter, she was met with love at first sight from the staff. Her eagerness to jump into the tub for Mel was a sign of trust, a willingness to embrace the care we were ready to give. Her coat was filthy, a testament to a life of neglect, possibly spent in someone’s backyard, forgotten and unloved.

shelter dog makeover-grooming

Mel’s care was transformative. With each wash, Greta’s true self began to emerge. The dirt that clung to her coat was washed away, revealing a spirit that refused to be dimmed by her past. When she caught sight of herself in the mirror, post-groom, her excitement was palpable. She was more than her breed; she was a survivor, her behavior during the grooming session nothing short of exemplary.

The sap that clung to her neck was a final reminder of her past life, but once removed, she was free. Adorned with a pink bandana, Greta was ready to start anew. Her journey to recovery would be a long one, but with the help of the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, who renamed her Guadalupe, she was on her way to finding a family that would give her the love she deserved.

The Battle Against Neglect

Each of these dogs, Hoss, Benny, Simba, and Greta, came to us carrying the weight of their pasts. But through the love and dedication of our shelter staff and volunteers, they were given a chance at a new life. Their stories are a testament to the resilience of the canine spirit and the transformative power of care and compassion.

Dog Hates Bath Time? 4 Game-Changing Grooming Hacks Every Owner Needs to Try https://rockykanaka.com/dog-hates-bath-time-4-game-changing-grooming-hacks-every-owner-needs-to-try/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=118106 Let’s face it—bath time can feel like pure drama for many dog parents. Some pups give the ultimate side-eye at the word ‘bath,’ while others launch themselves out of the tub the moment the water flows. It’s no wonder so many owners think bathing their pup is destined to be total chaos. (Watch Video Below)

@thezcattledogs The truth is grooming your dog at home is messy!! #earthratedpartner But here are three easy tips to making grooming your dog at home easy! 1. Lick mats and no slip tub liners! 2. @earthrated 3 in 1 shampoo for a long lasting easy clean 3. Dry off in the tub because less mess is less stress!! ✨🐶🛁 #dogmom #athomegrooming #dogshampoo #dogbathhacks #dogswithanxiety ♬ original sound – The Z Cattle Dogs

But here’s the real truth: it doesn’t have to be this way every single time. If your dog dreads bath time, there are clever hacks you can implement to ensure this grooming ritual becomes a quicker, less stressful experience for them — and for you, too.

One dog owner has earned endless praise online after sharing little-known yet effective hacks that have made bath time more enjoyable for her anxious Australian Cattle Dog. In a video posted on her TikTok account @thezcattledogs, she revealed four surprisingly helpful tips for pet parents who struggle with bathing their pups.

#1: Use a Non-Slip Mat

Owner Shares 4 Genius Grooming Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

For a lot of dogs, slippery surfaces like the bathtub can trigger a fear response because of how unstable their paws feel on these surfaces. Spreading a non-slip mat on the bathtub’s surface before your dog gets in can go a long way in easing their anxiety, as they will feel more comfortable and stable while inside the tub.

#2: Get a Lick Mat

Owner Shares 4 Genius Grooming Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Lick mats are a fantastic distraction tool for dogs who dread bath time. All you need to do is stick the lick mat on the shower wall and smear your dog’s favorite treat all over the mat. That way, your furry friend will be busy enjoying their yummy treat as you lather them up. Lick mats pretty much turn bath time into a fun treat time. Your dog will be too distracted (in a good way) to even remember that they aren’t a fan of running water.

“Using a lick mat has really helped us….I stick it to the wall and let my dog get comfortable before I even turn the shower on,” she explains.

#3: Use a Quality, Multi-Purpose Dog Shampoo

Owner Shares 4 Genius Grooming Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Being able to spend less time in the bathtub is usually a silent wish for most dogs who hate water. So, if you want to make your dog’s wish come true, consider using a multi-purpose pet shampoo.

Using a dog shampoo designed to address multiple grooming needs— for instance, a shampoo that not only cleans but also conditions and deodorizes — will help reduce your dog’s overall bathing time since you won’t have to move from one grooming step to another.

“When you have an anxious dog in the tub, speed is key. So you want a product that works really well with the least amount of steps as possible. I like to use the Earthrated 3-in-1 shampoo because the nozzle really lets me get into the nooks and crannies of my dog’s skin. It’s moisturizing and hydrating, so I don’t need to use conditioner afterward,” she adds.

#4: Dry Your Dog in the Tub

Owner Shares 4 Genius Grooming Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner

Instead of letting your dog step out of the tub in a wet state, dry them thoroughly while they’re still inside the tub. This will make it easier for you to clean up the loose hair that falls off when drying them, as the mess will be confined to the bathtub and not everywhere around the house.

What Our Groomer Found Under This Pomeranian’s Mats Will Break Your Heart https://rockykanaka.com/incredible-transformation-of-a-neglected-shelter-pomeranian/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=50653 A Glimpse into Shelter Life

I’ve witnessed a lot in my time helping shelter animals, but some stories linger long after. One that haunts me still is that of a frail, eight-year-old Pomeranian who arrived at the shelter in heartbreaking condition. (watch the full video above)

The Challenge at Hand

Mel, our skilled groomer, was quick to identify the urgent needs of this little dog. She was a stray, her fur matted and her skin in poor condition, a far cry from the Pomeranian’s typically luxurious coat. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be a challenging grooming session.

Beginning the Transformation

The grooming process revealed the severity of neglect the Pomeranian had suffered. Her fur was so matted that it seemed to mask her true appearance. As Mel worked, she discovered the dog’s skin was dry and flaky, indicative of the lack of care she had endured.

Unveiling the Neglect

As the grooming progressed, the extent of the neglect became more apparent. The Pomeranian’s skin was in terrible condition, covered in dead, dry skin. The most distressing part was the discovery of poo around her bottom, which had caused significant irritation.

The Healing Process

Mel’s expertise was evident as she carefully worked to remove the matting and clean the dog’s skin. The use of medicated shampoo was a necessary step in addressing the skin issues. Throughout the process, the Pomeranian, though initially nervous, began to show signs of relief.

A New Beginning Emerges

Post-grooming, the transformation was remarkable. The Pomeranian, once hidden beneath mats and dirt, now sported a cleaner, healthier coat. Her appearance had drastically changed, and with it, her demeanor seemed to improve as well.

The Journey to Adoption

Perhaps the most uplifting part of this story was learning that this Pomeranian had a hold for adoption. It was a testament to the resilience of shelter animals and the impact of proper care and attention. From a neglected stray to a dog ready for a new home, her journey was a powerful reminder of the work done in shelters every day.

A Reflection on Shelter Work

This experience with the Pomeranian underscores the importance of animal shelters and the work done by dedicated individuals like Mel. It’s a story not just about grooming or cleaning, but about restoring dignity and hope to a creature who had been forgotten. It’s these transformations that drive the passion for animal rescue and advocacy.

20 All-Natural Remedies to Soothe your Dog’s Itchy Skin https://rockykanaka.com/all-natural-remedies-for-dogs-itchy-skin/ Tue, 27 May 2025 16:56:11 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=15284 Expensive clinic visits and high vet bills – not to mention all those costly allergy medications your vet can prescribe – may be the reason why you put off taking your itchy, allergic pooch to the doctor. The constant itching and scratching can lead to hair loss, trauma, and skin infections…and, as loving pet parents, we don’t want to see our fur babies suffer.

Luckily, there are a few anti-itch remedies for dogs that you can use without the help of a vet to give your dog’s itchy, red skin relief. Here are 20 of the best natural anti-itch for dogs that are inexpensive (or free)  remedies available to you, some of them as close as your pantry or refrigerator.

Disclaimer: This is not meant to replace the advice of your veterinarian.

1. Omega 3 Blend

If your pup’s itchy skin has them doing the flea shuffle, this omega-rich fish oil might be the relief they’ve been begging for.

Made with wild-caught salmon and pollock oil, Zesty Paws packs EPA and DHA to help calm irritated skin, boost immune function, and bring back that soft, shiny coat.

Bonus: it’s mess-free, mixes easily into meals, and pets actually love the taste—so no more battles at breakfast

2. Vitamin E

Vitamin E - all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

Vitamin E will work on your dog’s dry skin just like it works on your wrinkles. I like to break open a capsule and rub the oil directly on my dog’s dry, itchy areas. Not only does the oil feel good to her, but also the massage action warms her muscles and helps the Vitamin E penetrate faster to problem areas. I recommend using Vitamin E oil on a dog’s dry skin patches–remedy as easy as applying lotion! Speaking of lotion, you could also mix a little Vitamin E oil into a dog-safe cream to put on your dog’s itchy skin.

3. Yogurt

Feeding your dog plain, low-fat yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog’s intestines in balance and helps keep yeast infections at bay.

A little bit of yogurt in your pet’s diet is not only a healthy treat, but can boost the immune system so that skin and ear yeast infections can’t take hold. Yogurt is also a great natural eczema treatment for dogs, and it works from the inside out for long-term relief.

When my itchy dog was a puppy, I would give her a teaspoon of yogurt daily to help build immunity and prevent diarrhea.

Alternative- Feed your dog a grain-free food with probiotics. We recommend the one from  Nulo

grain-free food with probiotics.

4. Chamomile Tea & Herbal Tea soaks

Chamomile tea & Herbal Tea soaks - all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

Chamomile tea & Herbal Tea soaks are a natural anti-inflammatory for dogs’ skin, and when chilled in the refrigerator, can alleviate any minor skin irritations when sprayed on sensitive, itchy spots. The chilled tea kills yeast and bacteria on the skin and relieves inflammation.

When  my itchy dog starts gnawing on her paws, I like to either spray them with the chamomile or just have her soak her paws in a small tub of the cold tea. Warm chamomile tea bags can soothe itchy, irritated eyes for both you and your dog.

You can also try green tea and calendula.  Read more about preparing foot baths

5. Ground oatmeal

Ground oatmeal poured into a bath or a shampoo, is an age-old remedy for itching, inflamed skin. You can either use the baby oatmeal cereal found at your local grocery store or grind it yourself in your food processor or coffee grinder. Your dog will love sitting in a warm bath containing oatmeal because it brings immediate relief to irritated area.

Alternative- buy colloidal oatmeal shampoo and conditioner all ready mixed and ready to go.

6. CBD for Pets

It naturally helps reduce inflammation in all parts of the body, which can reduce the symptoms irritation and itchiness.

In addition, it helps reduce a dog’s anxiety and calms them. Many times dogs work themselves into a frenzy with the constant scratching. CBD oil can reduce this. To learn more about this holistic oil visit PawCBD. We love this brand because it’s not a one size fits all approach. They have a variety of products based on your dog’s size.

7. Exercise

GPS tracker & Air Tag Collar

Believe it or not, exercise is one of the best ways to get a dog to forget about their itchy skin. When they’re playing and romping about, their mind is distracted and they don’t have time to worry about their itchy skin.  So, go out on walks, let your dog out more to play, go to the dog park go on walks.

No time for long walks? hire a dog walker. It’s easy. If you have a phone, download an app like Rover and you can hook up with a dog walker.

But, for your own peace of mind, get a GPS tracker or Air Tag Collar for your dog, that way if you’re at work and the dog’s with the dog walker you’ll know EXACTLY where your dog is.

8. Epsom salt

Epsom salt - all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

Epsom salt soaks and heat packs can reduce the swelling of itchy paws and inflamed sores. A bath of warm water and Epsom salt also speeds up the healing time for any small, open sores, particularly when combined with veterinary antibiotics.

9. Evening primrose oil

primrose oil - all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

An essential oil that has active anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties. You can apply primrose oil directly to your dog’s skin to treat dry or itchy skin issues. Likewise, giving your dog evening primrose oil by mouth helps calm allergies and boosts the immune system – and it only takes a few drops on her food or in her water to do the trick.

10. Treats with supplements

What dog doesn’t love a meaty treat? (All dogs everywhere!). Look for treats that contain ingredients like omega fatty acids which are really good for a dog’s coat and immune system. We recommend these treats developed specifically for skin & coats

11. Make a Eucalyptus Wash

Steep 1 teaspoon dried eucalyptus  (or 2 tablespoons of fresh eucalyptus) in a pint of boiling water for 10 minutes, covered. Allow the eucalyptus water to cool to body temperature and pour it over your dog after her final rinse. Rub the mixture in and towel her dry without further rinsing. The eucalyptus in the conditioner repels fleas while promoting a soft, glossy coat.

Alternative: Buy a an all natural eucalyptus shampoo. Hint- make sure that it’s real eucalyptus essential oil, and not a fragrance.

eucalyptus  shampoo

Note: Under no circumstances should your dog ingest eucalyptus. This is only recommended for topical use in moderation and under supervision. As with all products your pet may have allergies or react to different products in different ways. Please consult your vet before using.

12. Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

If your pooch hates getting into the water, an all-natural dry shampoo can keep her skin healthy and coat smelling good. Spread ½-cup to 1-cup of whole bran, uncooked oatmeal, or cornmeal on a cookie sheet and warm in the oven on low heat for 5 minutes to bring out the natural oils in the grain.

Grab a handful of the grain (leaving the rest in the oven to stay warm) and rub it into your dog’s fur and skin with a towel, concentrating on the greasy, dirty areas. Then thoroughly brush the areas to remove all the grain. This dry shampoo exfoliates the skin while removing any nasty residue from your dog’s coat.

Alternative: Buy an in between grooming spray that’s already mixed and ready to go.

 grooming spray

13. Make an Essential Oil Shampoo

Add a few drops of eucalyptus or pennyroyal essential oil to natural shampoo or castile soap. Rinse your dog with clear water. Rinse again with vinegar-water (1 tbsp. to 1 pint warm water). This easy-to-make shampoo and rinse removes soap residue and prevents the dandruff that can result in itchy skin.

Alternative: Buy a an all natural eucalyptus  shampoo  that’s already mixed and ready to go. Hint- make sure that it’s real eucalyptus essential oil, and not a fragrance.

eucalyptus  shampoo

14. Herbal Flea Powder

Combine one part each of as many of these dried and powdered herbs as you can find: rosemary, fennel, eucalyptus, rue, yellow dock, and wormwood. Put this mixture in a clean, dry shaker-type jar, like one used for parsley flakes or Parmesan cheese.

Apply the flea powder sparingly to the base of your dog’s coat by brushing back the hair first, then sprinkling in small amounts around the neck, belly, and back. You’ll need to use the powder several times a week for a severe flea infestation, and place your pooch outside in they yard so the repelled fleas don’t end up in your home. Remember, this powder only repels the pests…it does not kill them.

Alternative: Buy all natural off-the-shelf sprays. We like the all natural flea spray.

 all natural flea spray.

15. Natural Skin Tonic

This DIY anti-itch for dogs is a lemon-based tonic that not only repels fleas, but it also works as a general skin toner for itchy pets. Thinly slice a whole lemon, including the rind, and steep it overnight in a pot of boiling water. The cooling water draws out d-limonene, vitamin C, and other healing ingredients found in the whole lemon. The next day, sponge it on your dog’s skin and let the solution air-dry. You can use the lemon tonic daily for cases of heavy flea infestation.

Alternative: targeted anti-itch sprays made with essential oils and herbs that can focus on specific itchy spots on your dog and bring immediate relief to irritation and inflammation.

anti-itch sprays

16. Baking Soda

Prepare a thick paste by using a 50/50 mix of baking soda and water. Apply to affected areas of your dog’s skin, leave for 20 minutes, and then rinse off. Alternatively add one cup of baking soda to your dog’s bath water if he is itching all over.

17. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar - all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

Prepare a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar with water, and use a spray bottle to apply it to affected areas. Be sure to buy the one that says “With the Mother”. This combo makes the ultimate homemade itchy dog spray, and since dogs don’t like the taste of apple cider vinegar, it can also help to prevent them from chewing on their hot spots and sores. The best thing about this natural anti-itch spray for dogs is how affordable and easy it is to make.

18. Give your dog a bath

There is a common misconception that you shouldn’t bathe your dogs very often and that doing so can make skin conditions worse. Most veterinarians treat skin disease through a combination of steroids and antibiotics. But if you’re like me, you want to stay away from harsh drugs and try all natural courses of action first. The use of ’shampoo therapy’ to treat skin conditions may be the most overlooked natural therapy for dogs with skin disease.

19. Brush your dog every day

 brush glove

Who knew that something so simple and basic as brushing your dog’s coat could help to control and eliminate itchy and irritated skin.

When his skin is itchy, inflammatory blood cells and chemical compounds such as histamine and prostaglandins accumulate in the affected area. These are all responsible for the reddening and inflammation that causes the itch. We like this brush glove that fits right over your hand, so it’s like you’re petting and brushing your dog at the same time. Read more about how brushing your dog can prevent itchiness.

20. Feed your dog coconut oil

coconut oil -all-natural remedies to soothe your dog's itchy skin

Every night I mix up my dogs food with some coconut oil. In the summer it’s really easy because the oil is liquid due to the hot weather.

In the winter it solidifies so you have to microwave it a few seconds before putting it on your dog’s food. Coconut oil is excellent for your dog’s coat and general health. You don’t need a dog specific coconut oil, a high quality human brand will do. You can also checkout treats that have the coconut baked right in.

Selecting The Best Natural Anti-Itch For Dogs

If you’re stuck desperately Googling “how to ease my dogs itching” and you’ve found this article, I’m so glad! There is absolutely a solution here for you, and luckily, all of these tips are all-natural and totally safe to use to ease your dog’s inflamed or itchy skin.

If you’re still struggling to choose the best remedy, ask yourself this: What do you have on hand?

Likely, you have at least one or two of the ingredients you need to make one of these remedies above, so just start there and see if it helps! As long as your dog isn’t in an emergency situation, and you’ve consulted with a vet, it’s fine to try different methods of reducing itchiness on your own.

Remember, never choose a remedy that includes ingredients your dog is known to be allergic to sensitive to, and be careful when applying topical remedies to dogs who have a habit of licking or biting their itchy areas.

I hope that you’ll find something that will help you itchy dog!

Shocking Makeover: This Yorkipoo Was One Giant Mat—Look at Her Now! https://rockykanaka.com/this-yorkipoo-was-just-one-big-mat/ Tue, 15 Apr 2025 19:22:36 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=34898 In a heartwarming tale of resilience and care, a severely neglected dog named Wednesday has gone from a state of distress to a life filled with love and comfort. The journey to her remarkable transformation began when she was discovered as an animal control pickup at a local shelter, prompting a team of compassionate individuals to step in and restore her well-being. (Watch Video Above)

A Dismal Beginning: Unveiling Wednesday’s Condition

This Dog Was Just One Big Mat!

Wednesday’s condition upon arrival at the shelter was nothing short of shocking. Her fur was matted to the point where identifying her body parts became a challenge. “Her body is just one big mat,” a rescuer noted, describing the dire state she was in. The shelter staff were quick to realize that the road to her recovery would be a long one, but they were determined to give her a chance at a better life.

Mel’s Grooming Magic: Unraveling the Mats

This Dog Was Just One Big Mat!

Mel, a dedicated groomer with years of experience, took on the task of transforming Wednesday’s appearance and, more importantly, her spirit. The process began with carefully shaving down the mats that had accumulated over time. “I’m surface cutting this dog, kicking the top surface off, which will sometimes allow me to save some hair,” Mel explained as she gently removed the tangled mess that had been weighing Wednesday down.

As the mats were removed, the extent of Wednesday’s neglect became more apparent. Her transformation was not just a physical one; it was an emotional journey towards reclaiming her dignity and sense of self.

From Matting to Moments of Joy: Wednesday’s Progress

This Dog Was Just One Big Mat!

Despite the challenges, Wednesday’s spirit remained unbroken. As the mats were shaved off, Mel and the team discovered that underneath the neglected exterior was a young dog with an unyielding will to survive. Mel’s approach was not only about grooming but also about providing comfort and care. Lavender shampoo and a soothing environment were introduced to help ease Wednesday’s anxiety.

Even when faced with the daunting task of grooming sensitive areas like her face, the team showed unwavering patience. Mel’s gentle singing and Mandy’s assistance as a vet tech helped create a relaxed atmosphere. When it became evident that Wednesday needed additional help to handle the stress of grooming, a chemical restraint was used to ensure her safety and well-being.

The Road to Recovery: A New Beginning

This Dog Was Just One Big Mat!

As the mats were carefully removed, Wednesday’s true appearance began to emerge. Bald spots served as reminders of the painful mats that once bound her. Yet, with each strand of hair that fell away, her freedom from discomfort and pain was regained. The process was not just about her physical appearance; it was about giving her the chance to experience life without the burden of neglect.

Wednesday’s transformation caught the attention of potential adopters. Despite her rough past, two families put a hold on adopting her, seeing the potential for happiness that lay beneath the surface. And then came the heartwarming news: Wednesday found her forever home. Adopted by the first family to express interest, Wednesday’s journey from a neglected and matted dog to a cherished and loved companion was complete.

A Journey of Healing: A Testament to Resilience

This Dog Was Just One Big Mat!

Wednesday’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength that animals possess, even in the face of neglect and adversity. It also highlights the incredible impact that compassionate individuals can have on the lives of animals in need. From the initial shock of her neglected state to the heartwarming moment of her adoption, Wednesday’s journey is a testament to the power of care, patience, and the willingness to make a difference.

As Wednesday embarks on her new chapter, she does so as a living example of the potential for healing and happiness that exists in every rescue story.

Whipping up peanut butter biscuits or slinging bandanas at the farmers market? You’re a rockstar. But orders pile up fast, and “Did I confirm Rover’s pickup?” panic is real. A good app tracks sales, schedules deliveries, and keeps your treat empire rolling.

  • Groomers & Mobile Groomers
Love keeping pups primped and pampered? Whether you’re snipping in a salon or cruising in a grooming van, you’re making dogs feel like rockstars. But booking and payment hassles can clip your vibe. Platforms like MoeGo’s Smart Scheduling save the day—letting clients book online, syncing your schedule, and handling payments fast, so you can focus on perfecting those bow-tied looks. With every snip, you’re flipping a pup’s day from scruffy to spectacular, and the right tools keep your tail wagging too.

  • Micro Rescues or Adoption Events
Channeling your inner Rocky to run a tiny rescue or host adoption parties? That’s next-level love. Coordinating volunteers, adopters, and those nervous pups (looking at you, shy ones Flip would’ve mentored) needs a game plan. Software organizes meet-ups and frees you to play matchmaker.

Why Scheduling Software Is Your Secret Weapon

I know, I know—software sounds about as fun as a flea bath. But hear me out: the right pet business software is like having Flip in your corner, nudging you to keep things tight so you can help more dogs. It’s not about going corporate—it’s about staying scrappy and smart, so you’ve got more time to make tails wag. Here’s what it does:

  • Online Booking: Let clients pick their slots—no more texting marathons at midnight.
  • Auto-Reminders: Ping pet parents or volunteers so they’re on time, every time. No chasing required.
  • Easy Payments: Grab adoption fees, treat orders, or donations in a snap—no juggling apps or IOUs.
  • Pup Profiles: Store deets like “Loves squeaky toys, hates baths” in one spot, so you’re always ready.
  • Progress Check: Peek at your numbers—walks booked, cash earned, dogs helped—to see your impact grow.

Think of it like Flip Farms in your pocket: a tool to rehab your workflow so you can rehab more pups.

From Dream to Doable: Start Small, Win Big

You don’t need to be a tech wizard or a billionaire to pull this off. Whether you’re walking one dog a week or throwing adoption bashes that’d make Rocky proud, you’re already halfway there. A little structure—just a calendar, a payment link, a way to stay organized—turns your hustle into something unstoppable.

Picture this: you’re sipping Flip Coffee, checking your app, and seeing a full day of dog walks, a foster handoff, and a couple of treat orders, all lined up neat. No stress, no missed calls—just you, making dogs’ lives better, one step at a time. That’s the magic of keeping it simple. The less you sweat the small stuff, the more you can pour into what fires you up: helping every dog find a loving home.

Paralyzed French Bulldog Dumped at Shelter, Covered in Sores and Desperate for Help https://rockykanaka.com/paralyzed-french-bulldog-dumped-at-shelter-covered-in-sores-and-desperate-for-help/ Fri, 29 Nov 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=88823 At Animal Friends of the Valleys, a shelter in Wildomar, CA, a determined little dog nicknamed Wiggles has won the hearts of her caregivers. Wiggles appears typical at first, but her unique mobility issues quickly become apparent when she moves. Despite her challenges, Wiggles’ joyful personality has endeared her to everyone at the shelter. Rocky Kanaka, a pet rescue advocate, and Mel, the shelter’s groomer, are dedicated to helping Wiggles feel comfortable and hopeful about her future.

A Challenging Journey: Wiggles’ Condition and Skin Care

Upon closer inspection, the shelter team noticed signs of wear on Wiggles’ skin and coat—evidence of her struggles with mobility. Mel, the shelter groomer, decided to give Wiggles a medicated bath to ease her irritated skin and provide some relief. Mel pointed out, “I think it’s good for the sores all over her from dragging herself around.” Despite her physical discomfort, Wiggles is friendly and bright, maintaining a bubbly personality that shines through her challenges.

The Mystery of Wiggles’ Past

Wiggles came to Animal Friends of the Valleys as an anonymous arrival, left in the shelter’s night drop without any background or history. Rocky Kanaka speculates that her family may have abandoned her due to the cost of managing her medical issues. Although little is known about her past, everyone at the shelter is committed to giving Wiggles the care and support she deserves.

“I’m just happy that she’s here now, in the presence of loving people who can help her,” said Rocky, emphasizing the team’s devotion to Wiggles.

Exploring Medical Options for Wiggles’ Mobility Issues

Rocky and Mel sought advice from Mandy, a veterinary technician, to better understand Wiggles’ unique needs. Mandy explained that wrapping wounds could sometimes worsen an infection by trapping bacteria, stressing the importance of a careful approach to her care. She suggested that a wheelchair might be helpful, but only after a thorough veterinary assessment confirms it would be appropriate.

Mel agreed, “We’re going to give her a medicated bath to make her feel better,” with plans to explore further treatment options once they receive a veterinarian’s recommendations.

Looking Ahead: Wiggles’ Path to Recovery

After her bath and a spritz of conditioner, Wiggles returned to her kennel looking refreshed, complete with a new bandana. Rocky shared some uplifting news about her journey: Wiggles has caught the attention of Plug Nation LA, an animal rescue group that will continue to support her. “I’ll include them in this post so you can check out her journey,” Rocky encouraged, inviting others to follow along.

As Wiggles awaits her next chapter, her story is a testament to the compassion and dedication of the Animal Friends of the Valleys team, as well as her own resilient spirit.

This Poodle Was In So Much Pain From Severely Matted Fur He Wouldn’t Let Rescuers Touch Him—See His Amazing Transformation! https://rockykanaka.com/this-poodle-was-in-so-much-pain-from-severely-matted-fur-he-wouldnt-let-rescuers-touch-him-see-his-amazing-transformation/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=86171 Poor Cole—a small white Poodle—came to Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, from another shelter in rough shape. Cole wouldn’t let anyone touch him without snapping and growling at them, and he was whimpering in pain. But Cole wasn’t injured, his pain was coming from his severely matted fur. Not certain of his past, all shelter staff knew was that someone had seriously failed this little dog. His fur hadn’t been cared for in a long time, and he needed to get to a groomer as soon as possible.

Surprisingly, Cole did well getting groomed and bathed—he even let the groomer bundle him up in a towel afterward and give him some love! All that matted fur had been tugging and pulling at his skin, creating sore spots that would sear with pain every time his fur moved or was touched. Once he was unburdened and all the mats were shaved away, Cole showed everyone he was just a sweet, scared boy.

Cole appears to have already been adopted, all thanks to his rescuers who didn’t give up on him when he showed “aggression.” A dog in pain is likely to growl, nip, or bite to protect themselves or out of fear. Luckily, the Valley Animal Center staff saw through his reactive exterior and found the root of the problem.

@valleyanimalcenter His cries of pain broke our heart. 🥺❤️ Meet Cole (29070), a 3-year-old poodle we rescued from another shelter. His fur was matted and overgrown, a sign of months of neglect. We may never know his full past, but it’s clear he didn’t get the care he deserved. #shelterdogs #dogrescue #animalrescue #animalshelter #adoptdontshop #adoptme #trending #dogsoftiktok #dogtok #trend #blowthisup #fyppppppppppppp #fypage #fy #fypシ゚viral #thedodo #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #fypシ゚viral🖤tiktok☆♡ #poodle #dogtok ♬ je te laisserai des mots – favsoundds

Is Matted Fur Painful?

When you choose a “hair dog” like a Poodle, you must be prepared for the responsibility of having them groomed regularly. Without at-home maintenance like brushing and professional grooming services, hair dogs’ fur mats quickly. Mats aren’t just an aesthetic issue, they can also cause serious skin problems, hair loss, and pain. Matted fur is also unhygienic, and can harbor bacteria, trap moisture and mold, collect bugs, etc. Under matted fur, dogs can experience skin infections, painful hot spots, skin tears, and even tissue necrosis. Matting is much more serious than just looking a little messy.

How Often Should Poodles Be Groomed?

Poodles should be groomed every 4–8 weeks but should be brushed daily or every other day to prevent matting and protect their coats from damage. If you bring an overgrown, matted Poodle to the groomer they might not be able to preserve coat length. Mats often need to be shaved out of the fur, and your Poodle can go from a long luxurious coat to a short puppy cut in one session if you don’t do at-home care between professional grooms.

Many dog breeds don’t require professional grooming. One of the reasons I chose Chihuahua mixes is because they have short, smooth coats that don’t require brushing or trimming and can easily be bathed at home. When you choose a dog breed, factor in the time commitment and financial responsibility of grooming and select a breed with a coat you can easily manage.

Watch the Transformation of Pearl: The Most Severely Matted Cat I’ve Ever Seen! https://rockykanaka.com/shaving-a-cat-with-matted-fur/ Sat, 07 Sep 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=79142 When I first saw Pearl, a 7-year-old Persian cat at Animal Friends of the Valleys in Wildomar, CA, I couldn’t believe how badly she was matted. I’ve seen my share of neglected animals, but this was by far one of the worst cases I’ve ever encountered. Her once-beautiful coat was tangled beyond recognition, filled with stickers and dirt, and the smell of neglect hit you before you even saw the full extent of her condition.

Pearl was in desperate need of help, and luckily, Mel, the shelter’s groomer, was ready to step in. Mel is a pro, but even she admitted this was a special case. It wasn’t just a few tangles; this poor girl’s fur was so matted that it was impossible to comb through. There was no other option but to shave her down completely.

Shaving A Cat With Matted Fur

Watching Mel work, I could see the patience and care that went into every move. I don’t know if you’ve ever shaved a cat, but it’s no easy task—especially when the mats are so tight to the skin. One wrong move, and you could easily cut them. Mel explained how tricky it was, and I could see how much focus it took. Pearl, meanwhile, was a trooper through the entire process. She hardly struggled, which is rare for any cat in this situation, let alone one who had been through as much as Pearl.

As Mel shaved off layer after layer of matted fur, you could almost see the relief in Pearl’s eyes. She had been living with this tangled mess for who knows how long, and you could tell she just wanted it gone. I couldn’t help but feel for her, especially as Mel started picking stickers out of her skin. It must have been such a painful experience for this poor kitty.

After Mel had shaved her body, it was time for a flea bath. You know how most cats hate water? Well, Pearl didn’t flail or panic like you’d expect. Instead, she seemed to actually enjoy the bath. It was heartwarming to watch her give Mel these loving, almost grateful glances as the dirt and grime were washed away. It was as if Pearl knew she was finally being cared for.

Once Pearl was dried off and conditioned, she looked like a completely different cat. It was incredible. She went from a tangled, painful mess to a sleek, adorable kitty who finally had the freedom to groom herself again.

Pearl’s Happy Ending

Here’s the best part: after everything Pearl went through, she found her happy ending. Pearl has since been adopted by a loving family, and she’s thriving in her new home. Her journey from neglect to a fresh start is the kind of story that reminds me why I do what I do. It’s amazing what a little love and care can do for an animal in need.

This 12-Year-Old Dog Was Ignored by Everyone—Until a Miracle Makeover Changed Everything! https://rockykanaka.com/this-12-year-old-dog-was-ignored-by-everyone-until-a-miracle-makeover-changed-everything/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 00:25:42 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=78711 When Ruthie was found, she was wandering the streets, dazed and alone. She’d been at the shelter for about three weeks by the time I met her, but potential adopters kept passing her by, most likely because she’s a senior. Seeing her curled up in her kennel, looking defeated, broke my heart. She’d all but given up hope, but I knew there was still a spark in her. Today, Mel, the shelter groomer at Animal Friends of the Valleys, and I decided Ruthie needed a special makeover to remind her – and everyone else – of how beautiful she truly is.

A Much-Needed Makeover

From the moment Mel saw Ruthie, she could tell that beneath the matted fur and tired eyes was a sweet dog just waiting to feel good again. “She’s going to look so good cleaned up,” Mel said with a smile. As Mel began trimming Ruthie’s tangled hair, I was amazed at how trusting Ruthie was, even as her little paws were clipped and her fur was brushed out. She was calm, almost as if she knew Mel was there to help her. I think Ruthie sensed the love and care we were offering her.

Discovering Ruthie’s Health Issues

During the bath, Mel noticed something off. One of Ruthie’s eyes had a yellow discharge, possibly from an infection. I felt a pang of concern, but thankfully, the shelter was ready to step in with pain meds to help her out. Despite the eye infection, Ruthie seemed completely relaxed, enjoying the warm water as Mel bathed her. She was even starting to doze off—it was clear this bath was the most peace she’d felt in a long time.

I watched as Mel had to hold Ruthie up during the bath because she was literally falling asleep in the warm water. I couldn’t help but smile as Ruthie let out soft, contented grunts while being towel-dried. It was like watching a little dog start to trust again. When the dryer came out, she wasn’t too thrilled, especially when the air blew in her face. Still, she handled it like a champ.

A New Look and a New Hope

Once the grooming was almost done, Mel focused on cleaning up the fur around Ruthie’s eyes to avoid irritation as her eye healed. She finished up by trimming Ruthie’s beard and making sure her face looked balanced. And the finishing touch? An adorable little bow on Ruthie’s collar. I could see the difference in Ruthie—she was looking better and feeling better, though she also looked ready for a nap!

Here’s the best part of Ruthie’s story: shortly after her makeover, she was rescued by Frosted Faces Foundation! This incredible organization specializes in giving senior dogs a second chance at a happy life, and Ruthie is now living comfortably and loved.
