This Southern City Would LOVE To be The Most Dog-Friendly Vacation Spot in America https://rockykanaka.com/this-southern-city-wants-to-be-the-most-dog-friendly-vacation-spot-in-america/ Thu, 01 May 2025 20:46:25 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=60856 With spring and summer quickly approaching, many families are thinking about new vacation spots to visit. A recent survey showed that approximately 78% of Americans choose to bring their pets along on their vacations, and if your family is one of them, Knoxville, Tennessee is trying really hard to become one of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S.!

Visit Knoxville released a short ‘dogumentary’ titled Welcome to Barxville that shares the sights and scenes that make Knoxville so paw-pular with dog lovers. What’s so fun about this movie is that it was designed to capture not only the attention of families, but to also entertain our four-legged friends at the same time! They did this by including vibrant yellows and blues that dogs can see, and images and sounds of things dogs love like balls, squirrels, treats, barks and squeaks.

The movie is shown through the eyes of Hank, a Golden Retriever, whose humans take him on a road trip to Knoxville where they visit many dog-friendly places.  Knoxville lovin’ celebs like Payton Manning, singer-songwriters Drew and Ellie Holcomb, and members of University of Tennessee women’s athletics even stepped in to voice some of the movie’s characters.

Top Cities for Dogs in the U.S.

Forbes recently shared its 2024 list of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S., and Knoxville didn’t make the cut. Cities like San Francisco, Denver, Portland, Chicago, and New York City topped the list and offer all of the same things that are featured in Welcome to Barxville for families and dogs to enjoy.

While Knoxville might not be one of the Top 10 Cities for Dogs yet, they’re putting in the effort to attract more dog-toting tourists. According to Kim Bumpas, the President of Visit Knoxville, the city is working to give dog lovers what they want, “”Many know and love Knoxville for its Southern hospitality, and our four-legged friends are no exception. From dog-friendly hotels, patios, and shops to dog parks, trails, and Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, this town has something to help every furry member of the family feel at home.”

The Top 5 Dog-Walking Cities Revealed—Is Your Hometown the Ultimate Canine Paradise? https://rockykanaka.com/these-are-the-top-5-best-cities-to-walk-your-dog-according-to-recent-study/ Fri, 21 Feb 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=60981 Outdoor spaces are important for dogs. Lack of space to run around or socialize with other dogs can make a bad boy out of a best boy. When dogs are cooped up inside for too long, they can get bored, and that boredom often translates into trouble, like tearing up the contents of a canine’s forbidden fruit – the trash can.

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

It seems like it can be hard to give your dog the space he needs if you live in a city – especially since cities can feel cramped for even humans. However, not all cities were created equal and some cities are actually really dog-friendly.

To celebrate National Walk Your Dog Day on February 22nd,  LawnStarter ranked the most dog friendly cities in the United States. To figure out which cities are the most pooch preferred, they compared 477 of the biggest U.S. cities based on four categories – access to dog-friendly trails and off-leash parks, quality, professional dog-walking services, and safety.

Here are the top five that made the list:

1. Colorado Springs, CO

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

While this Colorado city ranked lower in safety, it still managed to come in first when it comes to access to dog-friendly trails and off-leash parks. The 1,700 miles of dog trails helped earn Colorado Springs LawnStarter’s top spot in dog-walking friendly cities in the entire United States.

2. San Francisco, CA

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

This Bay Area city ranked number two overall, but ranked one when it comes to quality, according to LawnStarter. Frisco boasts 50 top-rated dog trails. San Francisco’s ample green spaces and appreciation of nature within its urban setting means that there’s plenty of room for dogs to run around.

3. Phoenix, AZ

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

Arizona might be known for its extreme heat, which isn’t the most dog-friendly, Phoenix makes up for it by providing pooches with places to beat the heat. Phoenix has 927 miles of dog-friendly trails, and some shopping malls even allow dog owners to walk their dogs indoors!

4. Boulder, CO

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

It’s not surprising that two Colorado cities make up the top five. As Guiselle Torres of Colorado Springs told the NY Post, “Colorado people love to be outdoors, so of course, we bring our dogs,” she said. “There are so many trails and outdoor spaces to explore.” Boulder actually came in higher than Colorado Springs in terms of quality! The average visitor ranking for its off-leash dog parks is a whopping 4.6. Not bad!

5. New York, NY

Best Cities to Walk Your Dog

The needs of New Yorkers have made the Big Apple one of the more dog-friendly big cities. Less indoor space for people and pets translates to more outdoor space. Because apartments are so small, there’s a need for people to have a place to hang out with their dogs, and New York has some great outdoor spaces, like Central Park. Out of the top five, New York also had the highest safety ranking!

You should aim to walk your dog for at least 30 minutes a day, regardless of breed. It’s also important to switch up the places you walk your dog, since it keeps them stimulated.

11 Easy and Stress-Free Apartment Hunting Tips for Pet Owners https://rockykanaka.com/8-easy-and-stress-free-apartment-hunting-tips-for-pet-owners/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 01:54:42 +0000 https://rockykanaka.com/?p=89647 Accommodating your pet within your next abode choice isn’t always easy. Many tenants can attest to finding the perfect apartment only to discover at the last minute that the landlord disallows pets within the unit or the building itself is not pet-friendly.

This can be avoided if you do your homework before you decide on an apartment. Keep your pet in mind while you’re searching. After all, they’re as much a part of your family as anyone else, and you want their lives to be as comfortable as possible. Here’s how you can conduct a stress-free apartment hunt with your pet in mind.

1. Have Your Pet Deposit Knowledge at Hand

If you aren’t sure what a pet security deposit is, make sure you learn about this important aspect of renting as a pet owner. This deposit is an extra amount of money that you will pay for bringing a pet into the apartment, and it’s meant to protect the landlord from any pet-related property damage after you vacate the premises. Find out what the terms and conditions are concerning this deposit, and be sure to do everything in your list of responsibilities to get that deposit back when you move out.

2. Choose a Tiled Unit

You’re more likely to get your pet security deposit back if you select a tiled unit rather than a carpeted one. Accidents are bound to happen at some point or another, and stains on a carpet are expensive to clean and difficult to cover up. Prepare for those moments when you simply can’t get your cat or dog outside quickly enough by opting for a tiled unit which is easier to clean.

3. Contact Past Landlords for Pet Related References

Get in touch with your previous landlords and ask them to write you at least two references stating that you were a responsible pet owner. If future landlords and property managers can see that your pet was not a nuisance at other apartments, you’ll have a much easier time convincing them that your pet will be an easy co-tenant.

4. Filter Non-Pet Friendly Options Out from the Start

When searching for apartment options, list them on a notepad and look out for ones that immediately state their pet-friendly status. When calling the ones that don’t make this clear, let this be your first question: “Is this unit (and building) pet-friendly?” If they say yes, ask about restrictions to the rules, such as dog breed restrictions, dog size, cat restrictions, and any other points relevant to your pet. This helps you to quickly filter out the apartments that will not suit you and your pet, saving you time in checking them out.

5. Consider the Surroundings of Your New Apartment

Dog parks, groomers, pet stores and veterinarians that are within walking distance from your prospective apartment should also be a consideration during your search. These areas will make living with a dog indoors much easier, encouraging you to get into the routine of walking them at the same time every day.

6. Read Pet Rules in the Lease

The rules concerning pets in apartment buildings greatly vary from one building to the next. This is usually because of the existing tenants in the building, as well as the history of issues experienced by property managers. Check the rules of your lease and read through them meticulously so that you are prepared to follow all the rules concerning your pet. This may include noise, smells, certain dog breeds, and other concerns brought up by existing tenants.

7. Be Aware of High Rise Apartment Buildings

Remember to inspect your apartment thoroughly when you go to see it. Look out for risks like penetrable balconies where your pet may slip and fall. If you have birds, check for places where they might fly out if let out of their cages, and always inspect the space between balcony bars if you have cats.

8. Keep Your Pet Documentation on the Ready

Having your pet documents in physical and digital forms is also a good way to show your prospective landlord that you are a responsible pet owner. Send these along with your application and bring them with you when you first go check out the apartment. Vaccination forms, adoption papers, veterinarian cards, and breed certificates should all be included in your documentation file for your pet.

9. Opt for Ground-Floor Units

If possible, choose a ground-floor unit. This makes potty breaks quicker and easier, especially for dogs, and reduces the noise for neighbors if you have an energetic pet.

10. Invest in Pet Insurance and Damage Protection

Some landlords may appreciate if you’re proactive about potential damage by securing pet insurance or a damage protection policy. This can also give you peace of mind if accidents happen.

11. Establish a Cleaning Routine

Regularly clean and vacuum to control pet hair and odors, which can accumulate quickly in smaller spaces. This routine helps maintain the unit and keeps your landlord satisfied with your care for their property.

Final Thoughts

Keep your apartment hunting stress-free by following these guidelines. An emotionally and mentally happy pet will put your own mind at ease and set you and your pet up for a happy stay at the apartment of your choice. More and more apartments are warming up to the idea of allowing pets, so find the best one and tend to your responsibilities to make the moving and living process a happy one.

Why Adjusting GPS Settings Matters?

Picture this: you’re driving down a scenic highway, your pet comfortably settled in the backseat, and the GPS is leading the way. Suddenly, it reroutes you through a high-traffic area or a stretch of road known for its frequent stops and starts. For a pet, especially one prone to anxiety or discomfort in the car, these unexpected changes can lead to stress. Adjusting your GPS settings to avoid such scenarios can make all the difference. It’s not just about reaching your destination faster; it’s about getting there with your pet’s comfort and safety in mind.

While GPS has potential benefits, including tracking your pet at animal parks, it also comes with risks. For example, if someone has access to your location, they could use it against you. For example, they could see your location on Instagram and plan a robbery or stalk you. Sometimes it makes more sense to turn off GPS iPhone to remain anonymous. This is useful when taking photos, booking flights or hotels, or connecting to location-tracking web services.

Road Trip Safety: The Basics

Before diving into the technicalities of GPS adjustments, let’s talk about some foundational road trip safety tips. First and foremost, always ensure that your pet is properly secured. Whether it’s with a pet seatbelt, a crate, or a pet carrier, restraint is key. Unrestrained pets can become a dangerous distraction, and in the unfortunate event of an accident, they are at greater risk of injury. Furthermore, never allow your pet to stick its head out of the window. While it may seem like they’re enjoying the breeze, this exposes them to debris, dust, and even the risk of jumping out of the moving vehicle.

Regular breaks are another vital aspect of pet travel. Plan stops every two to three hours to allow your pet to stretch, hydrate, and relieve themselves. A tired pet is a calm pet, and these breaks help in reducing anxiety and restlessness during long trips.

GPS Navigation: More Than Just Directions

Now, onto the main point—adjusting GPS settings. Modern GPS systems are more sophisticated than ever, offering a range of features that can be customized to enhance your travel experience. For pet owners, certain adjustments can significantly improve the safety and comfort of their furry companions.

Start by enabling the “Avoid Highways” or “Avoid Toll Roads” settings if your pet is uncomfortable with high speeds or heavy traffic. Additionally, consider selecting routes that pass through green areas or parks where you can stop for a quick walk.

Another useful feature is the “Avoid Ferries” option. While ferries might be faster in some cases, the noise and unfamiliar environment can be distressing for pets. Similarly, if you’re traveling in colder months, avoid routes that go through snowy or icy regions by adjusting the settings to take you through warmer, safer areas.

Customizing Alerts and Notifications

GPS systems can also be set to provide alerts for various conditions, such as sudden speed changes, sharp turns, or even weather updates. Customizing these alerts to be more pet-friendly can be a game changer. For instance, lowering the alert volume prevents startling your pet, especially if they’re resting. Meanwhile, setting up weather alerts can help you anticipate and avoid driving through areas with extreme conditions that could be uncomfortable or dangerous for your pet. If your GPS offers real-time traffic updates, use this feature to avoid sudden stops and starts that could jostle your pet.

Pet Travel Tips: Beyond GPS

While adjusting your GPS settings is crucial, pet travel safety extends beyond technology. Preparing your vehicle is just as important. Ensure that your car’s interior temperature is regulated—extreme heat or cold can be harmful to pets. Never leave your pet alone in the car, as temperatures can rise or fall rapidly, leading to heatstroke or hypothermia.

Moreover, pack a pet travel kit. This should include essentials like food, water, a portable bowl, leash, waste bags, and any medication your pet may need. Familiar items like a blanket or toy can also provide comfort during the journey. If your pet is prone to motion sickness, consult your vet for advice or medication to make the trip more comfortable.

The Psychological Aspect: Reducing Travel Anxiety

Traveling can be stressful for pets, especially if they’re not used to being in a car for long periods. Adjusting your GPS to avoid routes with frequent stops, turns, and traffic jams can reduce this stress. Additionally, playing calming music or using pet-friendly pheromone sprays can help in keeping your pet relaxed.

Final Thoughts

While GPS systems are primarily designed to guide drivers, they can also be tailored to meet the specific needs of pet travelers. Adjusting your GPS settings is a simple yet effective way to ensure that your road trip is safe and comfortable for your pet.

By taking these steps—securing your pet, planning for regular breaks, adjusting your GPS settings, and preparing for all contingencies—you can turn a potentially stressful journey into a smooth and enjoyable adventure. Safe travels!
